The self-improvement thread; I could use some company! Anyone??

Well, it's finally happened!! The realization that I don't look the way I used to has suddenly set in. :o :( I suppose I've been in denial, or kept thinking I'd do something about it when I could find the time. Well, we all know how the time never seems to be right -- except, for me, the time is RIGHT NOW!!

Tomorrow, I'm starting an exercise boot camp and I could use some support. Would anyone else like to start on a self-improvement campaign in ANY area of your life and compare notes here on a regular basis?? Moral support is so important to keep the motivation going.

Anyone else up for starting a new chapter?? ;)

I need to do exactly the same Bev - I need to firstly go on a diet and get rid of the 'extra weight' I have put on in these last few months, then I wanna give up smoking (its getting too expensive now).

I AM THE BIGGEST JOHN FAN!
I am not yet ready to give up smoking. I stubbornly cling to one of the few vices I have left. I could certainly use a lot of improvement in the mental outlook department.

I think this thread is a wonderful idea and I`d be more than happy to participate in anyway I can.

You go Beverly and Jayne. I`m here if you need me.
You say you want to save humanity but it`s people that you just can`t stand
John came to me in a dream and this is what he said. "I had a vision of a man on a flaming pie, and he told me that Betsy with a B not Lisa with a L is the biggest fan of mine". John trumps 'the boss' !

Well, I'd like to improve my physical being first. I used to be very active, with running and gym work an almost daily part of my life. All that changed when I got seriously involved with someone. Rather than my "good" habits rubbing off on him, I'm afraid that his "bad" habits rubbed off on me. It's no one's fault but my own.

I'm going to start with a regular exercise program first, as I know from past experience that exercise works wonders on toning the body, improving the self esteem and brightens one's mental and emotional outlook. I remember how that used to feel and I'm setting out to reclaim it!!

I can't build Rome in a day, so I'll start with that. In time, I would like to expand my horizons by learning a new hobby -- guitar has haunted me for many years and this just may be the year to finally learn that darned instrument!! One thing at a time, though.

I thought it might be fun as well as inspirational to each of us to post those little victories that we each grab for ourselves. Feel free to share your own stories or pull up a chair and cheer from the sidelines!! Whatever works for you works for me. ;)

I've been wanting to learn that damn instrument too for ages but I just kind of give up.I'm awful.I say I'll do something and I sort of do for a day or a week and then it kind of stops.

I want to learn more things and be more mentally eh I dont know.Learn more I guess and keep my brain active.I just do uni and although its educating my mind I kind of dont do as much as I should if that makes sense. oh yeah and that reminds me be less stressed and stop holding grudges

This is an awesome idea because I think everyone sets out to do stuff but they kind of end up giving up because they have no real support. The only thing I've managed by myself is turning veggie but doesnt everyone want to improve.
I'm a BIGGER Beatles fan than you and I'm an even BIGGER Wings fan than that...

Jayne, those posters are just what the doctor ordered!! I especially love the one with the cat seeing the reflection of a lion in the mirror. ROAR!! B) B)

Alright, Jayne and DCBeatle, and anyone else who wants to start down a new, possibly scary road -- here we go!!!

Yes, lets post our thoughts daily, or if that's not possible, as often as you're able. We'll start with baby steps, and go from there. One thing that coaches tell you as you embark on a new program is not to try to tackle the ENTIRE problem in one day, or one week; rather, take it one day at a time. Anyone can do something new for ONE DAY, so each day I'll tell myself that the work I must do is only for THAT day!! I'm hoping that will prevent me from feeling that the task ahead is too large to conquer. :)

Hey Bev,

I started putting on weight and got sick a couple of months ago, so since the first of July I'm back to running/walking 4 miles a day and working out with light weights. I quit the gym after 5 years cause I got tired of "bagging up" everyday. I've had nothing white, including sugar since July 15th! All that and I've only dropped 10 pounds and want to lose another 15. Still waiting for the pain in the gut to go away as well, but maybe in due time..

What really upsets me is when you can't improve some things. I went for a hair cut and I hate it! I went to the dentist Thursday and I'm swollen, black and blue and my tinnitus is driving me crazy. Anyway, enough whining!

On the lighter side, I started guitar lessons 2 weeks ago and am still going to school at Chapman University. I'm loving the guitar class! You should definitely look into that if you have an interest. I'm developing quite a nice callous on my first finger!

Good thread. I think we all need motivation. We should report in daily...

This is great, Bev! I'm all for it!

While I'd love to learn to properly play an instrument or properly speak another language, those are extras which will have to come later when (IF!) I become a more well-rounded person.

Right now I need to work on my health. I've been gaining weight recently and getting ugly stretch marks as well as a tummy which I have named Herbert. Also, as a result of being unable to resist temptation, my blood pressure has gone up and I get tired too easily. I wish gym membership were affordable. I don't have enough motivation to excercise on my own and a gym gives you a stuctured environment where you're forced to work out.

I also need to get a job. Now. But just stepping out that front door is frightening, much less visiting new places and trying to impress strangers.

Bev:

Thanks so much for this thread! I admire all of you for your efforts to get started down what could be a difficult path, less so hopefully with all of us to lean on to get that all important motivation (great poster BTW Jayne).

I want to exercise as I have stopped doing so -- I want to start going back to the gym at least twice a week. I have had to start walking about 40 minutes a day, thanks to having to walk Grace to school. Fiona, one nice way to exercise without going to the gym is walking and I bet you have a few places you could stroll around to and investigate to make it more fun. I only wish I could be there with you to walk around.

I am also trying to add more veggies to my diet and consume less meat. I have taken my first step by buying my first veggie sausages at the store that I will try for breakfast tomorrow, and by trying to only get veggie things if I eat out (which I succeeded in the last three meals out).

And Fiona, I so emphathize about the getting work part. I am trying to get the courage together to put together my resume and give it to my friend and try part time work, which I haven't done in four years. It's scary...I think it would be great to try to support each other in this, and of course, for all of us to support each other in all these great new things we're trying.

Here's to our success!

Exercise is good I leave my house each day walk down the path, close the gate, then a very fast pace walk round the corner
to the Pub, then into the hard work of lifting 7 or 8 maybe 9 of them pint glasses of beer.

Then the intensive part of the exercise, the walk home, this is the best part three paces forward three paces back, not easy but the
most rewarding part of the training, have ago :P ;)

Thanks, everyone for your wonderful replies and your support. There is strength in numbers and with so many shoulders to lean on, I think we may all just find the courage we each need to make some positive changes in our lives.

It's funny how people can inspire others without even realizing it. Barb, you've inspired me with your posts most days when you mention going for a run. I used to do that almost every single day, for years, and since I quit doing that, my body and my mental outlook have significantly changed -- for the worse!! I think it's fantastic that you've already lost 10 pounds. The metabolism sure is different now than at 25, huh?? Keep it up!! That's a huge victory! You look so pretty in your avatar photo. . . I can't imagine that you need to do any cosmetic improvements. ;)

Lisa, that's great about transitioning to non-meat products. Before long, you won't even miss eating meat and you'll feel better, physically and cosmically. ;) :)

Fiona, you have so much to offer!! You've just got to start convincing yourself of that. I remember something I learned many moons ago in one of my college courses and that is the idea that we see ourselves as we think others see us. Well, I'm here to tell you that you have such wisdom beyond your years. You are kind, compassionate, highly intelligent, articulate, fiercely passionate in your convictions and just downright adorable!! I think I'm safe in saying that many others here share similar opinions of you. You may now officially begin to believe in yourself!! ;) :) Any employer in his right mind will snap you up in a heartbeat!! :)

LIPA, I don't think that kind of liquid diet is going to work for me!

I also need to lose a bit of weight, i've put on a fair bit during the winter and now it's spring so I have to get off my butt as summer is fast approaching. I also want to have some weight off in time for my Debutante Ball in April so I can look pretty in my dress! :)

I also have my School Certificate coming up  .. So I need a little motivation to start studying aswell!

In the last year, those who really know me, so Clare, Andy Fiona (especially Andy and FIona, who see me in person), Bridget, George and Mark Baker, will be able to say how far I've come but there is a lot I want to change and improve still. I have no vices but I have bad habits and things I want to get motivated to do.

Breakfast is oatmeal with flaxseed, blueberries and soy milk. I'm almost headed out the door for my run. Actually, since my face and jaw still hurt, I'm walking today, but will do my 5 miler. I am starting to really look forward to getting outside each day, especially the part where I see all the lovely animals along the way. There are some horses, cows, and the cutest pair of donkeys I've made friends with. Yesterday I saw an owl.

That's a good start for the day, what's everyone else doing to start their day? I want to hear about healthy beginnings!

Good start, Jayne.

I have a friend who is a personal trainer and nutritionist who told me to think of my body as my "house". You purposely wouldn't bring garbage into your house, would you...he would often say. When you think of it that way, it's easy to concentrate on nutrient dense food and nutrition for your body and mind. (A little red wine never hurt, either!) And of course, an occasional treat.

That's a really positive thing you're doing Bev - kudos to you! I'm on a bit of an unhealthy kick at the moment... for some reason I'm craving all of the things that are bad for me. Chocolate, chips, pizza... :pinch: I'm trying to stay to my 2,500 calorie daily limit, but I've been pushing it recently. Hopefully I'll go back to my healthy self soon, but it's easier said than done. Those naughty things are very tempting & delicious...

The best of luck to all of you ladies!

I'm not at all happy with my appearance, anymore. I need to force myself to go out and get my hair cut and learn to do something better with my make-up...it's getting me to face up to it, that's the problem. I don't know why, but I tend to cling to things and worry about change.

I could probably also benefit from exercise, although I walk a great deal. I'm not overweight, but wish I could shift some pounds to certain areas!

I'd been so underweight for a whle that I looked like a skeleton. I'm better with that now but I still need to do some changing.

My objective is to be as fit as I can be without over-obsessing with it. I've had some health problems and would like to keep more at a distance.

Merry, change is a problem for all of us at times, in different areas of our lives. I'm going through a lot of changes that I can't do anything about, maybe that's why I'm starting to focus more on myself. Guess I'm just a control freak!

I cut my hair recently and don't like it. Can't wait for it to grow out again! That wasn't a good change. My daughter keeps me up with make-up changes, whether I like it or not!

Ahh, you too, Barb?

I've got alot of things going on right now that I'm having to come to grips with...some not so great and others I'm just trying to deal. For me, I'm thrown for a loop and don't know what to do, anymore.

I do know that I'm in need of a better hair style, though. When total strangers will make comments ("Do you really like wearing your hair like that?", one man asked me!) then you know it's time to do something about it. I'm just already floundering as it is, without the "crutch" of my hair hanging in my face!

My sons are not going to recommend anything, they don't say a thing about my appearance one way or the other.

WOW! We have a full room here. . . . that's GREAT!!

It's going to be great to hear all your stories and things you're each doing to make a positive change in one or more areas of your lives.

Well, here's mine for today. I was incredibly tempted to sleep in today (since it's a holiday) but I got up, bright and early, and went and enrolled at an exercise place called Barry's Bootcamp. That name alone was almost enough to scare me back out the door! :o I'm committed to 20 one-hour visits during the next 4 weeks, and my visit today was FREE! :)

Boy, did that exercise instructor kick my butt!! It really was a lot of fun, but every muscle in my body is crying out for mercy now. :o The instructor wears a mike, and he shouts out commands as high-energy music plays in the background.

He divides the class of about 20 people into 2 groups -- 10 people doing weights, floor work, elastic bands, etc., while the other 10 people work on treadmills. He keeps you busy, alternating the type of exercise being done, and he walks around to give you positive feedback as you're doing the exercises. After about 15 minutes, he has the groups trade places.

I was feeling intimidated at first, as I was probably the oldest person in the class, but NOT the most out of shape! The instructor was extremely supportive, which really made me want to do my best. The power of positive motivation cannot be overstated!

Today, the floor work with weights worked on the arms and upper body. Tomorrow, the focus will be on the butt and legs, and the day after that, we'll be doing ab work. The treadmill will be a daily part of the program, as they've incorporated at least 20 minutes of aerobic activity into the workout.

I have to say it was incredibly fun and qualifies as what's known here in SoCal as a "kick ass" workout! I skipped my morning GALLON of coffee today in order to get out the door sooner, and I drank water instead. That's a side benefit I hadn't counted on. ;) The other funny perk from all this hard exercise is that it makes you WANT to stay away from junk food, as you don't want to undo all the hard work you just did! :D

Well, that's my little bit for today. One day at a time. . . . . . . . ;)

What an idiot! Console yourself with the fact that you can restyle your hair if you like, but he's pretty much stuck with that inferior brain of his B) I know what you mean about "bad hair" though. I hate my hair - it's babyfine with no texture whatsoever so it's a real challenge just to keep it looking decent. But if I get a "good" haircut and use the "right" products, at least it has a fighting chance, at least for a while :P

I love going for long walks outside when the weather's nice but I really really REALLY hate cold and snow so it's always a challenge to exercise in the winter. And I really NEED to exercise in the winter or I become alternately hyperanxious, grumpy and depressed. We have a treadmill, but it's hard to get myself on it sometimes.

Sheesh, it's only september and I'm worried about december already

Oh, my hair is damaged from too much processing and drying it every day. I have rather heavy (thick) hair but I hacked at it myself and I really don't know what I'm doing! Still, people aren't throwing things at me or laughing behind my back, so that's a good sign! ;)

I just need to get up the nerve!

Walking is great exercise, I'd highly recommend it! In the winter you can go to the malls to get out of the cold.

Ah, well at least the damage and hacked at bits will grow out eventually. At least you don't have "permanently bad hair" like some of us B) Maybe you could find a picture of a someone with a short haircut you like and bring it with you to the salon?

Walking though shopping malls is good for my mental and physical health but often bad for my financial health

Nothing new to "report" on my end...at least on the hair front! It takes some resisitance to avoid just taking the scissors and cutting it all off and shaving what's left. There are days...! ;)

Anyhow, I'm glad to hear that you've been keeping on your scheduele. I've probably been indulging a little TOO much in foods myself, lately and will either have to start dieting or cutting way back. I drink about a Coke a day, but it may be one too many.

Later on I expect to be doing some walking later, though...so that'll cut back a little on the calories I've already taken in.

Also, have you thought of going to a salon and asking them what style would work best for your hair??

Thank you on the positive encouragement for the walking...it's always been my favorite form of exercise.

As far as my hair...right now I can't afford much in the way of a salon visit. I'm sure the beauticians could figure out something for me (I may still be rehabitable..there is always hope!) but as I'd mentioned earlier, I'm going through alot of changes right now and stuck in a rut of my own making. I'm clinging (foolishly) to what I have...which I realize makes no sense at all!

I'll get on it one day, but I guess until I do I should just stop going on about it, shouldn't I? ;)

Anyhow, you ladies keep up the good work!

:) Merry

Hiya

I'm being honest and I slipped today :( :( I really fancied an ice-cream so I ate 1 :( :( ok I don't have alot of it because I can't stomach it most of the times but I just wanted 1 :pinch: :pinch:

I'm craving some crisps now   they are my downfall :( I can go weeks and weeks not eating sweets or chocolate but crisps I just love.

Hi Jayne!

Maybe you can find a substitute for them that will be low-calorie and still satisfy your craving for something salty.

I used to love buying fresh cucumbers and slicing them, lightly seasoning them with garlic and onion powder, or a bit of "Mrs. Dash" (a spicy salt substitute). They're quite good, and you won't be taking in as much fat, either.

Or popcorn, minus the butter can be low-cal too if you don't put much salt on it.

Just a couple of ideas to help cut-corners, calorically! ;)

cheers for that Merry

I don't like butter popcorn anyway  I only have the salted variety (but from a microwave ) thought popcorn was loads of calories :hmm:

if someone said to me crisps or chocolate, the crisps would win hands down - gotta say my favourite are one of the low-cal/fat ones (walkers square's) good job the shops are shut and I haven't got any in the house.

another thing cropped up today at work :o one of the lads wife is 'in labour' so he is unable to do a sponsered bike ride they are having in 2 weeks time - guess who is joining in :pinch: :pinch:

Jayne, I know what you mean about the craving for crisps (we call them potato chips over here). My downfall is Mexican food -- chips and guacamole I could eat by the bucketful!! -- and any kind of starch. :o :o

Do you mean that you're going to be doing a bike ride?? That's wonderful exercise!!

OK, now that you've gotten all those naughty cravings satisfied today, tomorrow you'll be a good girl. I just know it!! :)

Wow, Dot, that's amazing that you've dropped 50 lbs. on your own. I need a support system to succeed. That's why I'm here asking for everyone's support, including yours.

Together we can move mountains -- or at least a few little mounds of fat!! ;)

Merry, thanks for those yummy ideas!! I'd forgotten the old sliced cucumber trick. I used to do that ages ago. I think I'll go to the store today on my way home from the gym. ;)

Today's class will focus on BUTT AND THIGHS. :pinch: :hyper:

Hey Jayne, I just remembered an old trick from the days when I was "single".

Welcome to this thread, Carol!!

OK, everybody -- I survived Day Two -- Butts and Thighs!! :o :pinch:

Remember that old saying "The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak"? That pretty much sums up my body today. I'm sooooo sore from yesterday's workout, and today's class had my body screaming for mercy!! :pinch:

I gotta tell you -- twenty minutes of running at alternating speeds on a treadmill, followed by 20 minutes doing non-stop lunges with weights and leg presses with elastic bands, followed by ANOTHER 15 minutes of running on the treadmill -- I AM WHIPPED!! :P

I had to go the grocery store afterwards and I could barely lift my arms to put my items into the grocery cart. Driving home was also an adventure . . . I could barely steer the car. :o :o I saw a police car and I was afraid he was going to pull me over on suspicion of being drunk!! :hmm:

God, I wish right now that I could rent someone else's body. I have NO IDEA how I'm going to get my body parts to function tomorrow. :(

Well, I'm healthier today than I was yesterday, but not as healthy as I'll be tomorrow. ;) :)

Went for my 4 mile run and decided one day a week I'll bring a plastic bag and pick up trash. Good for the waist and the roadside.

I also delivered that pie to my Mom. I don't need it, but her eyes lit up.

because of a phone call i got today which made me extremely angry and annoyed the diet went straight through the window :(

I've calmed down a bit and I know I have to do extra work from tomorrow to compensate it but my anger was either hitting a wall or a bar of chocolate - the bar of chocolate won because I need to save my knuckles for gripping hold of the handlebars of the bike

Oh no, don't eat it naked, it'll be blah, Fiona!

Sprinkle some onion and garlic powder (one or both) on the slices or a little "Mrs. Dash", if you have some. It's a spiced salt substitute and tastes very good! Any combination of the above are excellent and I've relied on cucumbers alot to help stave off the craving for potato chips (crisps).

There are maybe 10-12 calories in a cucumber, btw! ;)

Barb, you're right. Those unwanted body parts ARE like strays. . . you feed them once, and they come back for more . . . . . and more. . . . . and more. . . :P

And yes, I can barely lift my fork tonight, but at least I'm having healthy stuff -- broccoli florets, whole kernel corn and a baked sweet potato (without butter!) :)

I've learned 8 guitar chords and my fingers are finally getting calloused. Yay!

Went for my 4 mile run and decided one day a week I'll bring a plastic bag and pick up trash. Good for the waist and the roadside.

I also delivered that pie to my Mom. I don't need it, but her eyes lit up.

Be happy and healthy, people.

You're very inspired AND inspiring to me today. Maybe I'll pick up the guitar this weekend and try to see if I remember the chords I learned 3 years ago.

I can't find my instruction book. It was all Beatles songs, with the charts written for beginners. It even had an instruction CD that you could strum along to. I can't find it anywhere. :( :( I guess that means that I'll have to start yet another self-improvement project -- cleaning up the clutter on my bookcase (so I can find my guitar book!) ;)

I love that you took your mom a pie. I'm sure that must've meant the world to her. You're a good daughter, Barb. All moms should be so lucky. :)

Speaking of picking up the trash, if you keep doing all these selfless deeds, we're going to have to nominate you for the Nobel Peace Prize. ;) :)

OK, Day Three -- my body gets the day off. I'm sooooooooo sore today that I can barely walk from point A to point B. I think my walking motions resembled those of a young toddler who just pooped in his diaper. :o

Tomorrow, it's on to BACK and SHOULDERS!! The 30 minutes on the treadmill is part of EVERY class, so I have that torture to look forward to. :P

Jayne, haven't heard a peep from you today. You must be in the shower with your lads. ;)

Rose, Judy, Fiona, Merry, (((ANNA))), Lauren, Emilee, and anyone else who wants to change or improve a thing or two -- what's your news?? I'm looking for some motivation here. ;)

Hey Beverly.........way to go. I'm so proud of you for exercising. When you are sore, you know you are doing something. I've been walking, but at 6:11am I'm already thinking of excuses not to walk after work  Exercise is hard stuff!!!!

I'd love to get an instruction book like that Bev.....look harder. Too funny about that being yet another project. I know how that goes.

I've been this sore before myself where clothing against the body hurts. I may run a lot but I need to work out my with the weights more.

I got inspired about picking up the trash when I saw this old man doing that near my work. He is so cute and wears a bright little orange vest...and he is quite trim, lol.

Keep up the good work with those gruelling workouts.

And remember what they say about sugar and the like: If it's white, it ain't right!

That's my whizdumb for the day.

I finally took the plunge about 6 weeks ago and got a new Doctor. I was so disgusted with my old one that I quit dieting and unfortunately quit taking my diabetic medication. My old Doctor had me on 8 different drugs.
His anwer to any of my aches and pains were to lose weight. I am overweight, mucho overweight-o!! But it got to the point that I thought "why go to him, I already know what he's going to tell me. Then he's going to take my money as well!

Anyway, I started seeing this new Doctor 6 weeks ago. She's got me excited to be back on my diet, I'm only taking 2 medications daily, and through many tests, we've discovered that thank God, I didn't do any terrible damage to my body by not taking my meds for several months!

Tuesday night, I started going to a diabetes class and am getting alot of information about the disease that I never knew, and it's not done in a "doom and gloom" way. Unlike other diseases, I have the ultimate control over it. I know what I have to do on a daily basis to be sucessful.

Next week, my class tackles nutrition. But right now, I'm counting calories (no more than 1700 calories) and am watching how many carbs I take in each day. I'm sure that after the next class, that may be changed a bit, but my blood glucose level has leveled out to about 130.

I like this thread, and if I can assist anyone in amyway, please let me know!!

That is fantastic news, Tim. I'm so glad you found a doctor who you feel comfortable with and who inspires you! Down to just 2 meds is a great improvement. Sounds like you're doing much better. Has she given you the o.k. to exercise or are you already doing that? I find that I must do both to control weight. I started to put on weight and increased my activity and pretty much staying around 1200 - 1400 calories per day and do low carbs and only whole grain. I really believe in the power of low glycemic foods. Staying away from the white potato is probably the best thing for me as it is loaded with simple sugar. My biggest indulgence is red wine on Sunday and my baked peach with a tad of brown sugar and granola!

Keep up the good work and it will really pay off!
