Suspect Admits Killing JonBenet Ramsey

Thursday August 17, 2006 11:01 AM

By SUTIN WANNABOVORN
Associated Press Writer

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) - A former American school teacher said publicly Thursday he was with JonBenet Ramsey when she was killed and called the 6-year-old's death ``an accident,'' a stunning admission that should help answer 10 years of questions in the unsolved murder case.

John Mark Karr, 41, will be taken within the week to Colorado, where he will face charges of first degree murder, kidnapping and child sexual assault, Ann Hurst of the Department of Homeland Security told a news conference in Bangkok.

``I was with JonBenet when she died,'' John Mark Karr told reporters afterward, visibly nervous and stuttering as he spoke. ``Her death was an accident.''

Asked if he was innocent of the crime, Karr said: ``No.''

Karr confessed to the killing after his arrest Wednesday at his downtown Bangkok apartment by Thai and American authorities, said Lt. Gen. Suwat Tumrongsiskul, head of Thailand's immigration police.

He said Karr insisted his crime was not first-degree murder but that she died during a kidnapping attempt that went awry.

``He said it was second-degree murder. He said it was unintentional. He said he was in love with the child, she was a pageant queen,'' Suwat said.

Karr declined to say what his connection was to the Ramsey family. Dressed in a turquoise polo shirt and khaki trousers, he appeared ashen with an expressionless look on his face.

An attorney for the Ramsey family said Wednesday that Karr once lived near the family in Conyers, Ga.

JonBenet was found beaten and strangled in the basement of the family's home in Boulder, Colo., on Dec. 26, 1996.

Wednesday's arrest was a surprise development in one of America's most lurid murder cases, which had left a cloud of suspicion over her family after years went by with no arrests. Some feared the case would never be solved.

Striking video images of the blonde-haired girl in child beauty pageants helped propel the case into one of the highest-profile mysteries in the United States.

A law enforcement source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the AP that Karr had been communicating periodically with somebody in Boulder who had been following the case and cooperating with law enforcement officials.

A University of Colorado spokesman, Barrie Hartman, said journalism professor Michael Tracey communicated with Karr over several months and contacted police. The university spokesman said he didn't know what prompted Tracey to become suspicious of Karr.

Tracey produced a documentary in 2004 called ``Who Killed JonBenet?'' A woman who answered the phone at a number under his name said he didn't live there anymore; his office phone mailbox was full.

The Ramseys learned that police were investigating Karr at least a month before the June death of JonBenet's mother, Patsy Ramsey, of ovarian cancer, the family said.

In a statement Wednesday, father John Ramsey said that if his wife had lived to see Karr's arrest, she ``would no doubt have been as pleased as I am with today's development almost 10 years after our daughter's murder.''

Suwat quoted Karr as saying he tried to kidnap JonBenet for a $118,000 ransom but that his plan went awry and he strangled her. Patsy Ramsey reported finding a ransom note in the house demanding $118,000 for her daughter.

Investigators said at one point that JonBenet's parents were under an ``umbrella of suspicion'' in the slaying, and some news accounts cast suspicion on JonBenet's older brother, Burke. But the Ramseys insisted an intruder killed their daughter, and no one was ever charged.

Over the years, some experts suggested that investigators had botched the case so thoroughly that it might never be solved. The Ramseys moved back to Atlanta after their daughter's slaying.

``It's been a very long 10 years, and I'm just sorry Patsy isn't here for me to hug her neck,'' said Lin Wood, the family's longtime attorney.

``John and Patsy lived their lives knowing they were innocent, trying to raise a son despite the furor around them,'' Wood told MSNBC.

Suwat said U.S. authorities informed Thai police on Aug. 11 that an arrest warrant had been issued for Karr on charges of premeditated murder. The warrant was sent to Thai police on Wednesday.

``Through investigation we were able to determine where his residence was and the Thais arrested him,'' Hurst said. ``He did not resist. He did express surprise.''

Hurst said Karr has been ``very cooperative'' with authorities and that he's shown a ``variety of emotions.''

Suwat said Karr arrived in Bangkok on June 6 from Malaysia to look for a teaching job. It was not clear whether he had gotten a job, the police officer said.

Karr's visa has been revoked as an ``undesirable person'' given the accusations against him, and U.S. authorities were expected to take him to the United States in the next few days, Suwat said.

Hurst, with the department's U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Bangkok, said that Karr had left the United States several years ago and had not returned.

The immigration and customs office had assisted the Boulder County District Attorney's Office and the Royal Thai Police in the investigation.

The suspect, who has been in Thailand five times over the past two years, was being detained by immigration police pending arrival of U.S. officials, Suwat said.

When asked how he could travel for so many years in Asia, and whether he was independently wealthy, Hurst responded, ``We're asking the same questions.''

Police said Karr had been living in a dormitory-style hotel called The Blooms in a neighborhood of massage parlors and travel agents that cater to expatriate residents and sex tourists. The nine-story hotel offers rooms for as short as three-hour rentals.

The district attorney in Boulder, Mary Lacy, said the arrest followed several months of work.

She said Karr, who had traveled extensively across the world, may also be connected to a prior case in Santa Rosa County, Calif. She did not provide further details.

Sonoma County Chief Deputy District Attorney Joan Risse confirmed the child pornography charges and arrest warrant against a John Mark Karr, though she cautioned that she didn't know if he was the same person held Bangkok. State records show Karr lost his teaching credential in 2002.

I was guilty of thinking that her parents were involved. How horrible to be accused of your child's brutal murder while the real killer is still out there.

Many of you know that I live in Boulder. I also thought Patsy did it. I hope I am proved wrong and that this guy did it. You ought to see the local paper this morning!

This guy had been exchanging emails with a CU professor for several years and he apparently told the professor things that were never in the paper. He was also writing letters to Patsy.

Now, he is on the television saying this was an accident. How do you break her skull, sexually assault her, etc. and it is an accident. I don't get that at all. He says he is sorry. Well, sorry will not bring Jon Benet back to this world. She would be 16 years old now and should be living the life of a teenager, not buried in a cemetary in Georgia.

It is so sad, but I hope he is the real killer. This guy's teaching license had been revoked for alleged sex crimes.

I forgot to say that this creep is saying that he loved Jon Benet. I fail to understand how you kill an innocent child you love.

I just hope the DNA they tested in 2003 matches this creep and they can convict him so he can rot in hell.

I hope that they found the right person now and can finally call this case solved!

I also felt that her parents or brother were suspect, and now I feel just terrible that I'd thought that way!

The story is still breaking, I guess...more has been coming out about the "alledged" murderer, but from the sources I've been reading it sounds as though they've finally solved the case.

I just feel badly that JonBenet's mother, Patsy, wasn't able to live to live long enough to see justice done, but I understand that she had been aware that a break was impending, and at least that is a comfort.

Been here for over 30 years, Tassy. That is all that is on the local news on television and the morning paper looks like it did on December 27, 1996. The picture of Jon Benet is about a quarter of the front page and the paper is mostly articles about this story.

The paper has one very interesting quote. It is from the suspect's father and it says "I thought he was dead. I thought somebody would have killed him by now". He must not have been communicating with his family.

I really hope that this is the guy and the case is over.

I am somewhat of a cynic though, and at 8:20 am pacific time the weird stories are starting to come out.

For one his ex wife has come out and said that he was with her on that night.

We could be getting into some strange times ahead.

It made sense if you thought her father was doing her and the mother got angry about it. That's what a lot of people speculated.

I pray it's this guy just so the family can have some closure. I have a feeling it isn't him but I'll pray real hard the test match up.

It's sounding very strange here in Boulder tonight. This guy seems totally weird and is probably a child molester, but I don't have a clue if he killed Jon Benet.

I think the little beauty queen pageant thing is totally wrong and should be stopped.

There was an interesting article in our paper this morning. They interviewed some students of the journalism professor who was exchanging emails with this creep. Without naming the case, he apparently discussed it in classes over the years. The strangest thing in the article were quotes from two different students who took a class in two different semesters. Both were told that the guy sent a picture of himself with the teddy bear that was found on Jon Benet's bed to the professor. The Ramseys said they had never seen that teddy bear before. I no longer remember if pictures of the teddy bear were published, but that is weird.

The paper also says that in May, some email the guy sent to the professor alarmed him enough that he went to the Boulder DA.

I don't think he killed her. His story doesn't add up. He claims she died of a chloroform overdose. How does that explain the blows to the head? More to the point, what must he really have done to be so keen to get out of Thailand? I mean, let's be honest, there are more dangerous places for a child molester to be than Thailand, and he's confessing to murder in order to get out?

I saw a story on TV tonight about a psychic who appeared on the Leeza Gibbons show over 7 years ago, and she drew a sketch of the man she said had murdered Jon Benet. The sketch she drew and the description she gave of the guy fit John Mark Karr to a TEE!!! It was a really eerie segment! :o :o

I thought I had heard everything about this case. This is all the more strange. Thanks for the link, Bill.

Today's paper has an article where they are trying to figure out which airport they will bring Carr to when he finally is brought to Colorado. Apparently they have said there will be no perp walk at the Denver Airport and none of the small airports have been contacted. The DA's office's only comment was that they won't be announcing which day he will be brought to Colorado or which airport. Duh! I would hope they've learned something by now.

This entire sordid case is an interesting example of how easy it is for an innocent person to be accused of a horrendous crime. This Karr character may or may not have killed Jon Benet, but in the press he is guilty, and that is enough to destroy his life (although in his case it does not sound like much of a loss).

Far worse is Patsy Ramsey. Not ony was her daughter kidnapped and murdered, but then she was tried and convicted in the press and lived the rest of her life under the suspicion of guilt. Even if she were still alive, the press would never vindicate her with anywhere close to the enthusiasm they demonstrated to convict her.

I wonder how Richard Jewell is doing these days.

I'm sure everyone has already heard this on the news today, but now they are saying that Karr had had all of his facial hair removed so that he could undergo a sex-change operation.

This is totally bizarre...I think he "confessed" just to attract attention to himself.

What next? :hmm:

Just when you think you've ehard everything.....

http://news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=123617

Here is a link to the sex change operation, Merry. Bill posted it yesterday.

Our news here last night said the clinic also does other procedures and would not confirm or deny that is why he had visited the clinic.

Yes, this guy is guilty in the eyes of the media but I don't think he did it. As Mozart said, that his life is ruined by this appears not to be a great loss to society. He is one weird dude.

On the news last night, they were showing people in front of the Ramsey house--getting their pictures taken. All that were on television were from out of state and here as tourists or dropping off their kids at CU. The neighbors find it disgusting as do I. Why would anyone want their picture taken in front of the house. One woman said she wished she could go inside and see the room where Jon Benet was found. What is wrong with these people.

In the summer, there is a tourist bus here. Two stops are the Mork and Mindy house and the Jon Benet house.

I, as well, wish it were him that killed JonBenet, but I agree with the majority... I don't think it was him...

I can understand people who might want to drive by to see where all of this horror occurred, but I wouldn't want to stop to get a picture, and I definately would NOT want to go in or see the room! :o

The paper says the neighbors are all putting Do Not Disturb signs on their doors. The address was published in USA Today and it's a tourist attraction. I don't get it. I've never been there. Some guy said he didn't remember that it used to have a wrought iron fence around the house. I'm sure whoever has owned it had to put that fence up. It's now vacant and for sale. It's been through several owners since the murder.

I mean this in the nicest possible way, but if those are the two hottest tourist attractions, I probably will not be flying in anytime soon.

Those are not the only stops, Mozart. Those are just two stops.

We happen to have the most beautiful mountains in the world here, along with many other things to do. In the winter, there is skiing.

This creeps email address was the date of Jon Benet's death--December251996@yahoo.com.

They flew the guy back to Boulder today. No business class and no champagne on this trip. They brought him back in a small 8 seater plane owned by the State of Colorado. They were to land at our small airport, but decided the plane was too large, so landed at a nearby airport. Then he was taken by car to the Boulder County Jail, so he is now about two miles from me. They took a very roundabout way of getting from the airport to Boulder. Not the way I would have driven. Maybe the morning paper will tell us why they did that. The local news said another reason they may have switched airports is that all the media were at the Boulder airport. Fooled them! Only the traffic helicopters got to watch.

JonBenet suspect 'won't be charged'
John Mark Karr will not be charged over the murder of child beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey, the public defender representing him has said.

A US TV network reported that hair and saliva taken from Karr in Boulder, Colorado, last week had ruled him out as the source of DNA taken from the six-year-old's body.

Speaking in Colorado, Karr's lawyer Seth Temin said: "The warrant on Mr Karr has been dropped by the District Attorney. They're not proceeding with this case."

He added: "We're deeply distressed by the fact that they took this man and dragged him here from Bangkok, Thailand, with no forensic evidence confirming the allegations against him and no independent factors leading to a presumption that he did anything wrong."

Earlier in the day, Denver's local TV station KUSA, citing two sources close to the investigation, said that hair and saliva taken from Karr was tested over the weekend and that he was ruled out as the source of the DNA taken from the crime scene.

The schoolteacher's arrest in Thailand a week and a half ago was seen as a surprise breakthrough in the decade-old murder mystery that had cast suspicion over JonBenet's parents.

But inconsistencies in Karr's account immediately raised suspicions that he might be an obsessed follower of the case who confessed to a crime he did not commit.

Among other things, Karr's relatives insisted that he was with them, celebrating Christmas in Georgia and Alabama, around the time the child beauty queen was found strangled and beaten at her Boulder home on Boxing Day 1996.

They said that if Karr had not been with his family at Christmas, they would certainly have remembered it.

In an interview with the media in Thailand, Karr said he was with JonBenet when she died and her death was an accident. Asked if he was innocent, he said no.

And the stupid law enforcement people in Boulder didn't check with California and actually let this guy loose. They have picked him up again and he is in jail awaiting extradition to California on those charges from way back when.

Guess he wanted to get back to the US so he could face charges he skipped out on.

This case has been mishandled since day one and it continues to be to this day.

Boy did he make the law enforcement there look like buffoons. All we can get him on in Sonoma County, California is having child porn on his computer and skipping bail. Misdemeanors. He can be out near children once again. Won't be employed under his name but can still be around children. I truly hope he gets help and gets locked away.

I still reckon he was fleeing from an imminant, even worse charge in Thailand. I'm not saying US prison is a picnic but it would beat the Bangkok Hilton. Why else would you confess to murder?

I agree with you, Bill. He ran from Bangkok for some reason. I just shudder to imagine what he did there that was bad enough for him to use, "I killed JonBenet." to get out of it.

He's a nutcase and a confessed pedophile. I say cut off his little twig and lock him away.

I think it's hilarious that Glenn Beck calls him Captain Highpants.

I agree people like him should not be allowed to be free. The safety of the children is what is most important. Not being PC!

He's a sick b*stard - I know that. To confess to a crime you didn't commit in order to be extradited so you won't face up to your crimes in Thailand... I hope the Thai government get an extradition order and they send him back to face whatever he's done there.

He's raised hope of getting justice for JonBenet for his own selfish needs and that's unforgivable.
...and in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

I agree with all of you. He confessed for something going on in Thailand. He raised the hopes of Jon Benet's family that the killer had been found. That is who I feel sorry for. The taxpayers of Boulder (which includes me) paid a fortune to get him back here, and for what? So, he could make a fool out of them, which he did.
