I hate to admit this, but I've never heard the entire album, so I can't vote.

Well this is a very popular thread, I must say. I don't actually own this album although I've heard it a couple of times and also have a few tracks courtesy of the Lennon Anthology box set I own, but this is clearly not a popular record. :P

Believe it or not, I just noticed this thread.

1. When did you first hear Sometime In New York City? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you?

I bought it, like most Beatles stuff, the day it was released.

2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now?

I thought/think Woman is the n*gger of the World is a very powerful song. I remember watching John performing it with Elephants Memory on the Dick Cavett Show. It just had a resonance of power and emotion within its structure. I'm not trying to intellectualize it, I'm just trying to explain it - which I really can't. I thought it was a hell of a song with a great sax intro - how's that? Of course, as always, Ono's contribution was the fly in the soup. I thought all of John's songs were originally composed, albeit, politically charged. John was good at that stuff, I must admit. Bottom line: Would've/could've been a great album less Ono's contribution, and more Lennon. The Zappa stuff was curiously entertaining, though I could have done without. I could go on, but...

3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest);

1. Woman Is The n*gger Of The World - 10
2. Sisters O Sisters - Oh no!
3. Attica State - 5
4. Born In A Prison - 3
5. New York City - 10
6. Sunday Bloody Sunday - 10
7. The Luck Of The Irish - 9
8. John Sinclair - 9
9. Angela - 8
10. We're All Water - Oh no!
11. Cold Turkey (Live At The Lyceum Ballroom, 1969) - 9 NOTE: I remember someone (journalist) saying, "John has created a new sound with this song, just like he did with the Beatles". It was a new sound. John had a gift for new sounds, didn't he?
12. Don't Worry Kyoko (Live At The Lyceum, 1969) - I've not heard this since I was a kid, so I don't really remember it well, so...
13. Well (Baby Please Don't Go) (Live At The Fillmore East, 1971) - 8
14. Listen, The Snow Is Falling (Bonus Track) - Same as track 12. These songs were B-sides to me.
15. Happy Xmas (War Is Over) (Bonus Track) - 10 - John wanted to create a Christmas song which would be perpetual, and he did. A classic John song.

4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons!

Woman is... for reasons I gave above. Least fave would be Ono's contribution, or lack of, depending on how you look at it, I mean her. I mean it.

Thanks! ^_^

You are most welcome kind sir.

Thanks for providing the only actual full response to this 'survey', Gary. I keep meaning to buy this album but the many poor reviews I read keep putting me off! I think 'Woman Is The N*gger Of The World' is an awesome song and really want it for that song alone... the only version of that song I own is a live version on my Lennon box set.

Either this man is dead or my watch has stopped.
Sorry, Andy--I too just noticed this thread.

1. When did you first hear Sometime In New York City? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you?

In college.

2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now?

Sloppy backing band (Elephant's Memory), fantastic Lennon songs, pretty good Yoko songs (you have to know this about me--I like Yoko's music--not a lot, but I do like it).

3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest);

1. Woman Is The n*gger Of The World -10
2. Sisters O Sisters -8
3. Attica State -8
4. Born In A Prison -8
5. New York City -10
6. Sunday Bloody Sunday -9
7. The Luck Of The Irish -10
8. John Sinclair -10
9. Angela -9
10. We’re All Water -9
11. Cold Turkey (Live At The Lyceum Ballroom, 1969) -9
12. Don’t Worry Kyoko (Live At The Lyceum, 1969) -8
13. Well (Baby Please Don’t Go) (Live At The Fillmore East, 1971) -9
14. Listen, The Snow Is Falling (Bonus Track) -9
15. Happy Xmas (War Is Over) (Bonus Track) -9

4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons!

"Woman Is The n*gger Of The World," "The Luck Of The Irish" and "John Sinclair" are all brilliant. Lennon uses 50s rock 'n' roll, folk, and blues to create (then) contemporary songs with topical lyrics (I'm in agreement on his political stance, so that helps the songs along for me). "Angela" has a beautiful melody.

The weakest aspect of the album is Yoko's voice. She just ain't a rock and roller. She does the avant garde thing well, though. However, she's not trying to do that here. As a result, I would probably rank "Born In A Prison" my least favourite, although I still like it.

This album gets a lot of negative comments, but it is one of my favourite John Lennon albums. And, I believe, a much better album than some of his former bandmates, particularly Wings At The Speed Of Sound, which I just finished posting on over in the McCartney section.
I took my brains out and stretched 'em on a rack
Now I'm not so sure I'm ever gonna get 'em back

The third of John's solo albums we're going to be discussing here is 1972's Sometime In New York City. Please fill in your answers to the following questions and feel free to elaborate and/or use this thread to discuss the album.

1. When did you first hear Sometime In New York City? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you?

After John passed away I bought up all of his albums just like everybody else. This and Plastic Ono Band were the only studio albums of his I didn't already have. In late 1980 and early 1981 I bought them, Shaved Fish and some other compilation album that I don't think is available anymore.

2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now?

John had just been murdered when I first heard this album, so I wasn't about to have any kind of negative reaction to it. Now that time has passed, I can admit that this is my least favorite of his albums. This is his Wild Life. Another problem is that I associate this album with his passing, so even if it were a better LP it would still be hard to listen to.

3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest);

1. Woman Is The n*gger Of The World -
2. Sisters O Sisters -
3. Attica State -
4. Born In A Prison -
5. New York City -
6. Sunday Bloody Sunday -
7. The Luck Of The Irish -
8. John Sinclair -
9. Angela -
10. We're All Water -
11. Cold Turkey (Live At The Lyceum Ballroom, 1969) -
12. Don't Worry Kyoko (Live At The Lyceum, 1969) -
13. Well (Baby Please Don't Go) (Live At The Fillmore East, 1971) -
14. Listen, The Snow Is Falling (Bonus Track) -
15. Happy Xmas (War Is Over) (Bonus Track) -

4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons!

I will refrain from grading these songs. This is the album that he is entitled to have his own bad day with. I was never a big fan of John's protest songs anyway and this album is full of them. What it does have over Wild Life is one strong song, Woman Is The n*gger Of The World. I don't like the title at all, but I can understand the sentiment.

Thanks!

You're welcome.
With great power comes great responsibility. With great age....

1. When did you first hear Sometime In New York City? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you?

I bought it (or at least it was delivered) two days ago. I'd heard a few tracks before, but I thought it was about time we owned a copy. I am 31. :P

2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now?

I found it to be a mix of great and average and, in the case of We're All Water and Don't Worry Kyoko, absolutely awful songs. A real mixed bag(ism).

3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest);

1. Woman Is The N*gger Of The World - 10
2. Sisters O Sisters - 8
3. Attica State - 7
4. Born In A Prison - 6
5. New York City - 7
6. Sunday Bloody Sunday - 6
7. The Luck Of The Irish - 8
8. John Sinclair - 8
9. Angela - 8
10. We’re All Water - 2
11. Cold Turkey (Live At The Lyceum Ballroom, 1969) - 9
12. Don’t Worry Kyoko (Live At The Lyceum, 1969) - 1
13. Well (Baby Please Don’t Go) (Live At The Fillmore East, 1971) - 6
14. Listen, The Snow Is Falling (Bonus Track) - 8
15. Happy Xmas (War Is Over) (Bonus Track) - 10

4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons!

My favourite track is Woman Is The N*gger Of The World - it's an excellent song with brilliant lyrics which would have been revolutionary in 1972. My least favourite track has to be Don't Worry Kyoko - it is absolutely f*cking awful. I can't decide whether it sounds like a cat having bowel surgery without anaesthetic or whether John was sodomizing Yoko live on stage - either way, I will never listen to that track again. I think that the US government ought to buy this album and play that 'song' to suspected terrorists - no-one could listen to 15 minutes of that utter wank without cracking. I lasted for nine-and-a-half minutes before I had to shut it off.

The album is a flop (sorry) but this is related to Yoko so much...

when Paul wanted to put Linda in he was attacked severly, but John wasnt blamed at all although the two ladies arent musicans, but Paul trained Linda and her voice and playing to a degree that she cam back him up in many beautiful songs..
but without Paul ..Linda wouldnt make it

but Yoko is a very differnt case indeed (sorry for her supporters),when she sings her voice attacks your ear and makes you nervous.in its best ways it sounds funny.

another reason after Imagine ,people expected John to give something similar and remain to his standards..but it seemed that the subjects of his song were taken fro newspapers and magazines at that time ...it wasnt totally from the heart..

all that doesnt mean that there is no good things in the album...
The Luck of the Irish is great john melodic political song
Happy Xmas(It was added for the album) is in the same melodic spirit and I think it is one of the best xmas songs...even Yoko is acceptable (here she sounds funny and friendly)
John Sinclair is a moderate good John song

woman is the n*gger sounds a bit traditional repeated ...although many like it.

of course John had better moments than this album

Favourite is too hard. Attica State, The Luck of the Irish, New York City, Woman is the n*gger of the World, and John Sinclair all stick out in my mind

Least favourite would be Sunday Bloody Sunday..something about Yoko's part throws me off. I normally don't mind her voice either

I think this album is really underrated, and quite solid with a lot of good rockers, and well written songs. I even like a lot of Yoko's singing.
Well I could have been a famous singer

1. When did you first hear Sometime In New York City? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you?

It was the last John album I bought, partly because I had heard bad things about it but mostly because it was so hard to find a copy. I think I was 25.

2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now?

Then I thought it was really naff. Now I think it's really naff. It's amazingthat this album comes from the same creative force that one year ago created the Imagine album.

3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest);

Disc One

1. Woman Is The n*gger Of The World - 5
2. Sisters O Sisters - 4
3. Attica State - 3
4. Born In A Prison - 3
5. New York City - 7
6. Sunday Bloody Sunday - 3
7. The Luck Of The Irish - 6
8. John Sinclair - 1
9. Angela - 3
10. We’re All Water - 3

Disc Two

11. Cold Turkey (Live At The Lyceum Ballroom, 1969) - 7
12. Don’t Worry Kyoko (Live At The Lyceum, 1969) - 1
13. Well (Baby Please Don’t Go) (Live At The Fillmore East, 1971) - 6
14. Jamrag - :nono: 1
15. Scumbag - 1
16. Au - :frustrated: 1

4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons!

New York City is a half decent song and the stand out song in this quogmire although the lyrics are a bit annoying as it's just a list of activist people that we're supposed to believe it's cool John was hanging out with. My least favorite (not counting the live tracks) John song is John Sinclair just because first time I heard it I thought I had a scratched CD but it does have some strong competion for the naff crown. How funny that John Sinclair was let free before this album was released, just a shame that the song was still released as well. And it sounds a bit like spiderman! Don't Worry Kyoko seems to be an attempt to p*ss off anyone who has decided to try hard to like this album up to this point. And then Yoko goes on to try and spoil a reasonable cover of Well (Baby Please Don't Go). I don't have the mind set for Yoko's songs I don't think. Sunday Bloody Sunday sounds like it's going to turn into Come Together at any moment, to be honest I wish it would. And let's just forget those last three songs eh? Except to sayI'm sure Scumbag is all one word.

Phew! I made it through a review of that album, nothing can be as bad as that, now what's next? Oh no, not McCartney II!

1. When did you first hear Sometime In New York City? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you?

Probably around six years ago. The last John album I got, eventually.

2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now?

I'd been warned by massive Lennon fans that this isn't his finest hour. Well, I also think it's hit and miss to be honest.
There are some nice moments on there.

3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest);

1. Woman Is The n*gger Of The World -- 9
2. Sisters O Sisters -- 3
43. Attica State - - 4
4. Born In A Prison -- 4
5. New York City -- 9
6. Sunday Bloody Sunday -- 1
7. The Luck Of The Irish -- 3
8. John Sinclair -- 3
9. Angela - - 3
10. We’re All Water -- 4
11. Cold Turkey (Live At The Lyceum Ballroom, 1969) -- 10
12. Don’t Worry Kyoko (Live At The Lyceum, 1969) -- 3
13. Well (Baby Please Don’t Go) (Live At The Fillmore East, 1971) -- 4
14. Listen, The Snow Is Falling (Bonus Track) -- 4
15. Happy Xmas (War Is Over) (Bonus Track) -- 10

4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons!

Not counting the bonus tracks for a moment, I think there are two very good songs on the album- 'New York City' and 'Woman is the n*gger of the world'. The former is a nice little rocker, and the latter is pretty cool. I like the arangement. Least favourite, well there's a couple let's say.
