1. When did you first hear Band On The Run? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you?
I bought it January this year so I was 18.It was my first Macca album.My dad was the one who suggested it and I got the 25th year anniversary edition and then had to get the other one so I could get a copy of Country Dreamer

2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now?
Technically I got it for my love for nineteen hundred and eighty five.I didnt instantly love the album.It took me a while to get into it.I dont actually think its his best.Its my 3rd favourite Wings album but despite that I do love it.Its an outstanding album.

3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest);

4. Mrs. Vanderbilt - 10
5. Let Me Roll It - 9.Sounds so much better live
6. Mamunia - 10
7. No Words - 10
8. Picasso's Last Words (Drink To Me) - 9
9. Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five - 10

McCartney Collection Bonus Tracks

10. Helen Wheels - 10

4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons & please don't include the 'bonus tracks'!
Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five was the song that made me love Paul as a solo artist.I heard that song for the first time on a compilation I had of greatest albums.I still think it doesnt even sound like him which shows his versatility.Its probably one of my favourite songs of his of all time.
Worst song is maybe Picasso's last words but I still think thats a great song.Also I could say Band on the Run just because although its a great song in some respects it can be overrated but only because he has loads more superior songs.
I'm a BIGGER Beatles fan than you and I'm an even BIGGER Wings fan than that...
'You're a Paul McCartney fan? No you're a Wings fan'. 'Thankyou Scotland' Ho Hey Ho...

1. When did you first hear Band On The Run? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you?

I know I was thirteen when I bought BAND ON THE RUN at the same Borders where I get a lot of my records. I can't actually recall when I got it though. It strikes me that it was my first proper McCartney album, but that might've DRIVING RAIN for Christmas 2003. My memory sucks. :blush: :lol: I got the 25th Anniversary box, with the bonus interview disc and the phenomenal booklet and liner notes. B)

2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now?

I listened to BAND ON THE RUN before this, but when the album really ingrained itself in my consciousness was one early morning not long after buying it, just as dawn was breaking. I used to get up an hour before sunrise or so because I loved that early morning feeling. I still love it, I just can't drag myself out of bed at 5 AM anymore! Anyway, I read Mark Helprin's wonderful amazing fantastic book Swan Lake while I listened, and memories of the two, BOTR and the story, are entwined in my head, which is by no means a problem. B)

Today BAND ON THE RUN is my fifth-favourite album of all time. I don't listen to it very often, because I don't listen to my favourite albums but four or five times a year, but when I do give it a spin I make an occasion of it - I've even got a little "story" worked up for the album, like a long music video in my head. :lol: ^_^

3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest);

1. Band On The Run - 10.5/10 ( A++ )
2. Jet - 10/10 ( A+ )
3. Bluebird - 9.5/10 ( A )
4. Mrs. Vanderbilt - 9.5/10 ( A )
5. Let Me Roll It - 9/10 ( B )
6. Mamunia - 9.5/10 ( A )
7. No Words - 10/10 ( A+ )
8. Helen Wheels - 9/10 ( B )
9. Picasso's Last Words (Drink To Me) - 10/10 ( A+ )
10. Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five - 10/10 ( A+ )

McCartney Collection Bonus Tracks

11. Country Dreamer - 9/10 ( B )

n.b. U.S. release originally included 'Helen Wheels', so all of those who purchased the original U.S. album would consider it an album track & not a 'bonus track'.

Which I did. ;) ^_^

4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons & please don't include the 'bonus tracks'!

Band on the Run and Jet would the be obvious answers, and I think they're the "best" songs here for reasons I don't need to explain - classics, plain and simple. But I think I'll throw a curveball here and nominate No Words as my "favourite", because it seems to get dumped on by a lot fans and I just adore it. Least favourite I guess is Helen Wheels, but I still think the British version of the album loses something by not including it. That tells you something; namely, BAND ON THE RUN is a masterpiece. :wub:

1. When did you first hear Band On The Run? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you?

It has always been on the radio. I remember hearing "Jet" when I was a kid and liking it, except for the "ooo ooo ooo" bit.

2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now?

I thought it was a great album--very Beatlesque--with a couple of exceptions. Still do.

3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest);

1. Band On The Run -10
2. Jet -10

5. Let Me Roll It -8
6. Mamunia -10
7. No Words -10
8. Picasso's Last Words (Drink To Me) -8
9. Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five -10

10. Helen Wheels -10
11. Country Dreamer -8

n.b. U.S. release originally included 'Helen Wheels', so all of those who purchased the original U.S. album would consider it an album track & not a 'bonus track'.

I had read that it was not included in the English version, and, being a purist, saw it as a bonus track.

4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons & please don't include the 'bonus tracks'!

My favourite is "Mrs. Vanderbilt" (today). I like the words and the descending bass/guitar line in the chorus.

My least favourite is "Bluebird." The lyrics are awful-they sound like a three year old playing: "I'm a bluebird! I'm a bluebird! I'm a bluebird!" Ugh. If it was meant to be played for kids, like "Mary Had A Little Lamb," then fine. But as a love song? Ugh.

1. When did you first hear Band On The Run? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you?

I'd heard quite a few tracks from the album before, but I first heard Band On The Run as a whole when I was about 17 years old back in 1992. I bought if for myself on cassette.

2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now?

I was astounded by the sheer quality & consistency of the songs and I absolutely loved the tracks I hadn't heard before, especially Mrs. Vanderbilt & Nineteen Hundred & Eighty Five. The only track I was a little nonplussed about was No Words, but it was a grower. I think it's a wonderful album but maybe a little tainted by overexposure & listening to it described by some critics as one of the only worthwhile things Paul has done since he left the Beatles. That irks me a lot.

10. Helen Wheels - 2
11. Country Dreamer - 8

4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons & please don't include the 'bonus tracks'!

It's a good thing that Helen Wheels is a UK bonus track because I really don't like that song. It's so basic - the riff is boring and the majority of the song is based around one chord. Utter mediocrity. Anyway, on the original album my favourite track is Nineteen Hundred & Eighty Five - absolutely brilliant - and my least favourite is Picasso's Last Words, which is still an excellent song, but is simply the one I like the least on a superb collection.

Ugh, yeah. BAND ON THE RUN one of the few albums I think the critics got right with Paul, but then they act as if he's never done anything else worth listening to. Which is absolute utter f*cking bollocks of course.

Continuing with our album discussion threads, the next album up is what many people believe to be the peak of Paul's solo career, Paul's second release in 1973 - Band On The Run, credited to Paul McCartney & Wings. Please fill in your answers to the following questions and feel free to elaborate and/or use this thread to discuss the album.

1. When did you first hear Band On The Run? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you?

This was my 1st Paul album. Much like everyone else in the world, I bought it while it was at the top of the charts in early 1974. Band On The Run, Hotel California and Rumours were the albums to have. I was 6 years old. With some of my friends, we scraped together enough dimes and nickels to pay the $1.50. I was the one elected to keep it. I think it might still be in a box somewhere in my mother's house.

2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now?

This was my first Paul experience outside of my vague understanding of the Beatles. Everyone I knew liked this album, but I think I genuinely liked it, not just to be on the bandwagon - no pun intended.

3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest);

8. Picasso's Last Words (Drink To Me) - 7
9. Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five - 9

10. Helen Wheels - 8
11. Country Dreamer -

4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons & please don't include the 'bonus tracks'!

I think Band On The Run is probably my favorite song on this album. I can't really say why. My least favorite is probably No Words.

I recently read Robert Hilburn's review in the Los Angeles Times for Band On The Run when it was first released. He wrote, "I can predict rather easily that 'Band On The Run' won't be remembered as anything more than a slight upturn, in what has been a steadily declining artistic barometer for McCartney."

Thanks!

You're welcome.

1. When did you first hear Band On The Run? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you?

First heard Band On The Run when I was about 9 - my dad had it on vinyl. I bought it on cd for myself around 1997 after buying Flaming Pie. i was 18 then - but a boy!

2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now?

The title track blew me away as the most inventive piece of music I'd ever heard - loved how the sections ran into each other - still do. i thought the compositions were ingenius - you can hear how much work went into each and every song. It smacks to me of Paul determined to prove the critics wrong. I still love it to this day. You can't fault it.

4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons & please don't include the 'bonus tracks'! Probably No Words - just because it's Denny singing i think. never did care for the tone of his voice on lead.

Let Me Roll It is a fab song. What a rocker, and clever lyrics.

I've never really liked Picasso's Last Words. I don't like the slurry, drunken sound.
