Can't agree with you about Rocky. Sure IV sucked but I thin V is underrated. It shows the ugliness of boxing that the others don't and I think in a way, it atones for III and IV.

I'm dreading VI though.

The first one was pretty weak. While Debbie's friends clearly believed in free love, Debbie herself did far less than all of Dallas. She only does one guy in the entire movie.

Round 22: TOP 5 MOVIES STARRING TOM HANKS

This is getting absurd. I did not participate in the decades lists because I prefer not to categorize films by when they were released, and there was a certain bias against films made before 1950 (although I can understand why).

But now we have specific actors whom many of us may not even consider exceptional. Will there be a Top 5 Derek Jacobi Movies? Probably not. How about Top 5 Movies Filmed In Cinemascope? Top 5 Movies That Were Nominated For Best Make Up Oscars But Lost?

My point is that listing films per genre allows everyone to participate. While we do not all like the same comedies, most of us probably do like some type of comedy. Obviously we will run out of genres eventually, but that has not yet happened. I would have imagined these specialty categories would have come later rather than sooner.

The thread owner is, of course, allowed to do as he pleases. But I thought now would be a good time to air my grievance.

The thread owner is, of course, allowed to do as he pleases. But I thought now would be a good time to air my grievance.

I wouldn't have said that it was getting 'absurd'. The beauty of the 'Top 5' format (as 'borrowed' from Nick Hornby's High Fidelity) is that it's random, often obscure, sometimes a little silly but fairly non-exhaustible. I have other genres in the pipeline - I have a little list on Beatles notepaper sitting by my computer right now, but I thought I'd do so actor-related lists. So, with this thinking, I went back to page one of this thread (as I intend to do with the next few 'Top 5's) and picked some of the people who have responded here's favourite actors so they can compile their favourite movies by these performers. Tom Hanks appeared on quite a few members' lists, so he got the first one. If you don't like him, well - tough luck, but I'll be picking some actors you do like because I was intending to pick at least one actor from everyone's lists.

...and yes, it can get ridiculous - and I hope it does. That's the fun of this thread - and it is meant to be fun. If anyone wishes to PM 'Top 5' ideas to me, they're welcome and they will be included. ;)
...and in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

Movies are just another passion in life, like music, for me. I'd say Fiona and I watch anything from 3 to 10 movies a week when we have the leisure time, so that adds up to a lot of movies in the long run! ^_^

I've seen several Tom Hanks movies, and overall I like him! I even saw "The Da Vinci Code" recently...but that's a rarity more than the norm; I rarely have time to watch films, but from what I've seen coming out this year, there weren't too many noteworthy ones, anyway.

I love alot of the classics and old-timie stars! ;)

Yes, it is a Boulder, Olen and Andy.

Would you believe this college town will have NO movie theaters come next month.

It's also called a time in my life when I was living in small town Iowa and there was no movie theater. I used to go to a movie every Friday and Saturday night back in the 70's and 80's. I just don't do that any more.

Robert De Niro movies--I'd say I've only seen The Godfather movies, The Deer Hunter and Taxi Driver. I do have Meet the Fockers here, but I've never watched it.

Well i am surprised no one for the Searchers a marvellous western a genre that is not to my taste, i am always cheering on the losing side, or did i pick it because of the beautiful Natalie Wood.

wot no Sgt Pepper.

there have been so many bad ones yes i mostly stay to the end how i wished i had walked out of Ace Ventura Pet Dectective but being dragged up properly didnt want to disturb my friends only to find out of six out six absolutely loathed. The movie we wanted to see was full up we should have gone to the pub.

The Sound of Music is just so bloody awful it should be used for torture purposes.

I would put spice world but i only saw four minutes of it so i'll go with, though it pains me to do so, Grease 2.

Alexander has to be in this category i still shudder at itn never mind the new directors cut.

I did watch it. I do need to be judged for that, I know. I even payed. I still don't know why.

Everyone says that about Lebowski. I watched it after it had been over-recommended to me. It still is. Maybe it will get a second chance; but seriously, when I watched it, I couldn't wait for it to end. I think I even skipped a few scenes. I think I am the only person on the planet who didn't like it - how cool is that? :P But no, you're right. It deserves a second viewing.

Back in the 70's and 80's, I went to a movie at least every Friday night. I have seen so many bad movies that I can't start to pick only five. I only walked out on one and it was so bad that I no longer remember the name of it.

Note: This is all from off the top of my head without looking stuff up - hence, 'year of release', etc., may be a little off, but you get the picture...

Round #30: Top 5 Performances By A Child In A Movie (15 yrs. of age or younger).

Mickey Rooney - "Orchids and Ermine"
(Lawrence Oliver called Mickey Rooney "the greatest actor America ever produced" - Oliver wasn't the only person to say this. It goes without saying that Rooney is at the top of my list simply because of what he was and is. He was 7 yrs old when he made the feature I mentioned, in 1927.

Bobs Watson - "On Borrowed Time"
(Simply a great film and performance by this little fella - another 1929 classic film.

Patty McCormack - "The Bad Seed"
(A favorite film of mine and Patty was great as the child serial killer - from the late '50's.)

Ronnie Howard - "The Courtship of Eddie's Father"
(Everyone knows this guy, and a pretty good movie starring Glenn Ford, from the '60's.)

Ricky Schroder - "The Champ"
(I wasn't mad about this film, but I remember Schroder's performance at the end of the film put a tear in my brother's eye. That was a pretty big impact, believe me.)

Round #31: Top 5 Movie Remakes

Heaven Can Wait, starring Warren Beatty (1978) - remake of Here Comes Mr. Jordan.

Body Heat, starring William Hurt & Kathleen Turner (1982) - remake of the old Fred MacMurray/Barbara Stanwick "Double Indemnity" film, circa 1940's. Not necessarily a better film, just different.

The Postman Always Rings Twice, staring Jack Nickolson (1980) - remake of the Lana Turner/John Garfield film of the '40's, and one of Jack's better movies.

Scarface, starring Al Pacino. I must say I did not see the original, but I can't imagine it being more intense.

The Fly, simply because I needed a 5th. (At least I'm honest.)

Round #32: Top 5 Successful, But Terrible Actors

John Travolta
Sylvester Stallone
Arnold Schwarzeneggar
Tom Cruise
Michael Douglas
