OK, Discussion about Olen's middle name inspired me to make this thread. Do you like your name? If you could change it, what would you change it to? Whats the heritage of your surname? Do you have any nicknames? Do you have any names in mind for future kids? Why did you name your kids with that particular name? Discuss NAMES here.. As you guys know, My names pronounced the same as "Emily" but my parents decided to substitute the Y with EE. This might've been cause my mums name is Lee, but im not entirely sure. My surname is McDermott, which is of Irish heritage I sometimes get Macca as a nickname, but only by certain people - and when im playing sport

Interesting thread! As most know, I am Fiona. My first and last name are Scottish and there are still some people who have never heard the name 'Fiona' over in America but the release of Shrek resolved most of that! My dad was from Scotland and my mother really liked the name of the host of NPR's The Thistle & Shamrock - Fiona Ritchie - so that was that! However, if I was to end up a boy she wanted to call me Tyree!
I do hope no one here is called that because I am very glad I am a girl for that reason. (And the fact that getting a date from Andy would've been hell.)But anyway, I'm pretty happy with my name and I still have no ideas for what I would like to call my children. Nothing I hear seems quite right, but I think I have plenty of time to sit on that one.

My name is Barbara Ann.....pretty much reflects the decade in which I was born.
There are better names, but I'm sort of used to it and besides, my Pop named me and he was a hell of a guy! Family nicknames for me have always been MotorMouth, Babs, Barbie, and Bobbie. Bar names include Roxy, Lola, and Stella. Road name is Thelma. My kids call me Mombo. And everyone knows me as BeatleBarb.

I quite like my name. I was very nearly called Christopher (I would have been if it had have been up to my Mother) and I'm very glad I wasn't because there were two Christophers at my school and they were both very nasty bullies also, later in life, a woman I was once very close to got raped by a guy called Chris. Apologies to anyone called or related to a Christopher, but I just don't like the name. The reason I was called Andrew was because my Dad didn't like Christopher that much and was hesitant enough to ask the midwife what she thought. Her reply was that I "looked like a little Andy-Pandy" and so they called me Andrew. My first name is Scottish, my middle name is Welsh and my surname is Irish... and I'm English. Go figure.

I'm very glad you weren't a boy either. Tyree... when I first heard that you were going to be called that if you were a boy, it conjured up images of some kind of bowel disease. "Sorry boss, I can't come to work today... yup, I've got a really horrible case of Tyree... haven't been off the toilet all night..." Again apologies to anyone called or who knows anyone (they like) called Tyree.

My first name's Thomas. I have no problem with that. Lots of great people called Tom - Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Edison, Thomas the Tank Engine. My middle name's Karl, which is traditionally my family's name for the oldest brother's oldest son. I broke the chain, but that's what my son's going to be called if (God forbid) I ever have children.
My last name gets misspelled a lot, which is a little grating, but I can live with it. All in all, the moniker with which I got stuck with in this life hasn't displeased me too much over the years.

You all know me as Clare, which gets mis-spelled more times then you'd think. I get Claire, Clair, Clear and once I got Klare! How difficult is it - seriously?? My name is of Welsh origin, and means "Bright and clear". My middle name is Elizabeth, which is the same name as every second woman I run across. Booooring. My surname originated in Yorkshire, and was originally a male Christian name. I hate having to constantly spell out my last name and am in the middle of legally shortening it to Dale. If I had been a boy, I would have been Paul. Half my luck! |

My name is Sher. ( Suprise, Suprise) I like it. It has obnoxious points. . . like "Sher Bear!" Or people who ask where Sonny is. (acutally I had a friend named Sonny for a while and we tried to get him to start spelling it Chonny. . . but he wouldn't go for it). There are 47 other people in the phonebook with my last name, and I'm not related to any of them, however, I still love it. |

Being born in an Irish Catholic family, I got a very popular Irish name for a girl, sadly but also luckily, only really popular in Ireland and the UK. My full name is Bridget Mary Butler, how more Irish can you get!! Bridget comes from St Brigid, the female patron saint of Ireland, and Mary is my maternal grandmother's first name. My mother choosed to give me Mary as my middle to make up the fact she named me Bridget to her mother. Turns out my grandmother abosutely hated my name because my grandfather had a girlfriend before grandma named Bridget and wanted to name my mom Bridget. A shame he never knew that he's a got a granddaughter with the name he so wanted in the family! And yes, in the whole family of Irish nuts, I am the only Bridget! I love my name, it's unusal in the States, though everyone butchers it when they spell it and annoys the hell out of me (but there was one teacher I had who spelt Brigid all the time, I never corrected her because I loved that spelling!). I'm just glad I didn't get named after a county like my sister! Her name's Kerry and when I was little, to annoy her, I'd yell, "Hey County Kerry!" Had I or my sister been a boy, one of us would of carried on the family name, Francis Xaiver. Soooooo glad we weren't boys! One of us would of been the fourth one in the family to carried it, being it's our great grandfather's, grandfather's, and father's name. Like my mom said to us, "oh there was no dissucion when it came to a boy's name, you were going to be Francis Xaiver IV, and that was it." That also meant the horrible nickname that my grandfather and my father had growing up would of been passed down, Mickey. I asked my dad as a kid if it was from Mickey Mantel and my dad's love of the Yankees, he said he wished. As I grew older, I saw it was from Mick, the slang for Irish and hated it ever since. |

My name is Danielle but most people call me Dani.Whats worrying about my name is technically I was named after my mum's dog Danny, but oh well. Initially I was meant to be called Natasha but a few days before I was born my mum was watching the TV and saw a horrible women who was called Natasha so they had nothing for me as she changed her mind(my little sister later got given the name). When I was born dad suggested Guenivere but now claims it was just to annoy my mum and granny.I dont think he got much say actually  My last name is more interesting because its a Scottish name.It is never spelt correctly, actually when I moved to England it was a nightmare trying to spell it because they couldnt understand me either so couldnt win at all. Anyway my family name is part of the Campbell of Cawdor clan and we have our very own tartin and the normal clan things I appear to have loads of nicknames but the most common is Doodle, why I dont actually know. There was a time when it was Doodlebugsnuff but discovered that a Doodlebug was a slang term for a flying bomb so didnt sound to cool and the snuff part is from the Beach Boys song Heros and villians. Although the Doodle is slowly converting into Diddle as a result of the Paul McCartney song Hey Diddle |

I AM THE BIGGEST JOHN FAN!
|
My name is Elizabeth Anne Eason and when I married Bunn got added to it. Now I have always been called Betsy, because nearly every woman in the family had the name Elizabeth. My great grandmother was called Bet, her daughter was named Mattie Elizabeth and always went by her first name, my mom is Elizabeth too and the only family member that is called Elizabeth, but the nieces and nephew called her Bissy because when they were little couldn`t pronounce her name and it stuck. I have another aunt named Elizabeth who is called Betty, a cousin named Elizabeth who is called Beth and then there is me. The name Eason is a gaelic name from Ireland and the translation meens Mckee. I have no idea what Bunn is because when I google it I always get, international maker of commercial coffee machines. |

I don't know exactly why my parents chose my name! Well I do up to a point. My father wanted to name me after his deceased mother, Margaret, but my mother didn't care for it (me either!), so she suggested "Mary", which my dad felt was too common and she decided on changing the spelling, so here I am. I won't even go into my middle name, I don't care for it one bit, and it took me up until I was in my teens to get most of my family members to not call me by both. To this day, if anyone who doesn't know me calls me that, I cringe and feel I have been reduced to my childhood all over again. Not that it's a bad thing, I had a great childhood, but I just don't care for the name. My maiden name was Scottish, much better than the one I have to drag around with me now like a dead carcass. It's misprounced on a regular basis and my ex actually says it differently than I and my two sons do. His grandfather was hearing impaired, so how it's pronounced is up to the interpreter, I guess. But we follow the rest of my ex's family that way, while he has stubbornly clung to the other way. Wherever I go, I have to spell out both my names. It gets tiresome, and whenever I meet someone they of course assume I am "Mary". But I guess mine is unique, so overall I like it. I like to be a little "diffferent"! Merry

Betsy & others - I love the name Elizabeth. My best friend was named Elizabeth and she was always called Beth. There are so many nicknames for Elizabeth, but never heard Betsy as one of them. I think Betsy is an adorable name as well. Eliza would be nice too. I think Elizabeth is a strong female name and I was tempted to name my daughter after my friend who died, but I picked Alexandra Sarah instead. As beautiful is the name, we call her Al. Terrible! |

I wasn't really named for family. I always get asked if I was born around Christmas since my name is Holly. Truth is my father is such a music buff he decided to name me after one of his favorite musicians Buddy Holly. If I would have been a boy, then it would have switched over to sports and I would have been named Bryan which is Bart Starr's real name. I am happy with my name. My family is a mix between Italians and Finlanders. If I would have gotten a family name then it could have been pretty scary  Just to give you a little preview - some of the Finish family names: Kaisha, Sylvia, Ino, Eno, Uno, Erma and Ano. The italian side names were: Guido, Egilio, Gino, Frank, Teresa, Grace and Dominic. Sylvia and Grace were my grandmothers and both asked that their grandchildren weren't named after them for some reason. I wouldn't have minded either, they are both beautiful names. I am 3/4 Italian, yet was named Holly, but thats ok with me because Buddy Holly was pretty damn cool!

I was named after my mother, more or less. My name is a variation of her name. Everyone mispronounces it, but it is the name she gave me, so who am I to complain. My original last name is either French or Jewish, depending who you talk to. Everyone always misspelled it. My mother lived in France for a large chunk of her life and part of her family was French, and only distant relatives from generations since gone were Jewish, but she and everyone else pronounced the name the Jewish way. My current last name is very English. My father’s side of the family is English/Irish. No one ever has a problem spelling or pronouncing it, so that was something of a change. I was quite resistant to changing it, but I think in the end I made the right decision. My name was not on the name origins website, but I think it means "awesome chick" in Urdu. My mother’s name is listed as "N/A", so that was pretty useful. |

My name is Olia. It is a variation of Olga. Olga is a Russian form of 'Helga', which is derived from Old Scandinavian 'heilagr' meaning 'holy; blessed; successful'. Usage: Russian, Scandinavian, Hungarian, Polish, Romanian, Slovene, Serbian, Croatian, Bulgarian. Olga has 5 variant forms: Elga, Helga, Ola, Olenka and Olia. What you can learn on the internet... As I have written in another thread, the greek pronunciation of my name rhymes with the greek word for 'beans' and that can be silly, but for Greece it is an unusual name so many people like it. I am not too fond of it, but I do like the way russians say it. It sounds sweet. My last name is very russian. It is the typical one that ends in -ova. I don't know what its origins are. Where can you actually look that up? I would like to have a son called James. I think James is a beautiful name. If I stay in Greece that will be impossible. I could use the greek equivalent but it's boring. I actually don't want children so a lover named James would do. If I do have children I am using ancient Greek names, some of them are really nice. I don't want any christian names, which are the ones used more often here in Greece.
