1. When did you first hear Red Rose Speedway? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you?

I got this a few years ago, I don't remember when exactly.

2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now?

Much like Wild Life, I thought it was a pretty boring album, but I really wanted the bonus tracks. At first, I played just the bonus tracks. However, even though it is a very imperfect album, I find myself playing it more than other McCartney albums. There is a certain charm to the album. The lyrics, though, well, they need some help.

"My Love," which I originally thought a sappy love song, is wonderful. One of my favourites by McCartney. I don't know why--it has so many things going against it. I don't like Major 7th chords in pop, and the verse (in fact, the song) begins with an extended use of one. I don't like that 70s electric piano sound, and that's what Paul plays throughout. The lyrics are less than brilliant. But, much like the album as a whole, I find it charming and somewhat irresistable.

"When The Night" is one of the most boring songs in the McCartney catalogue. The song doesn't start well, and it doesn't really go anywhere from there. The harmony vocals are irritating, and, again, the words are not interesting.

1. When did you first hear Red Rose Speedway? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you?

Oh, that would've been the fall of 2004. I was 14, just starting ninth grade, and had ordered it (like all my Wings albums other than BAND ON THE RUN) online, from a merchant through Amazon.

2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now?

I think I was fond of RED ROSE SPEEDWAY from the very beginning. It's nowhere near perfect - with a few exceptions, the lyrics are pretty worthless - but it's very melodic and fun and has a warm, homey kind of feel to it and if it's not quite one of my favourites, it's in the next tier down. I really like this one. B)

3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest);

1. Big Barn Bed - 9/10 ( B )

7. When The Night - 9/10 ( B )
8. Loup (1st Indian On The Moon) - 8.5/10 ( C )
9. Medley (Overall) - 19/20 (not an average)
a. Hold Me Tight - 9/10 ( B )

4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons & please don't include the 'bonus tracks'!

Little Lamb Dragonfly is brilliant, tear-jerkingly beautiful. Truly one of the best McCartney songs ever - RRS is worth the price for just this one song. Least favourite? It could be either Loup or One More Kiss, according to the ratings, but I'm gonna give the "award" to One More Kiss, which I simply find boring. Loup, if it's not exactly first-rate, is certainly interesting.

Incidentally, I'm also rather partial to the Medley. If Paul had left those four songs to their own devices, they would've been pleasant but fairly inconsequential. But by binding them into that suite format and tying them all together at the end, he creates an intriguing, highly enjoyable piece of domestic art-rock. And I much prefer the live version of C Moon on BACK IN THE U.S. to the rather flaccid original. ;)

1. When did you first hear Red Rose Speedway? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you?

I bought it on cassette back in 1991 when I was 16 years old.

2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now?

Back then, I thought it was fairly good - some tracks stood out to me more than others, such as Get On The Right Thing and Little Lamb Dragonfly - the rest I found a little bit average. I'm very fond of the album now and think there are some really great tracks on it.

My favourite is Little Lamb Dragonfly, such a beautiful song and just beats My Love as my favourite on this album. My least favourite is Loup, which I find boring.

Continuing with our album discussion threads, the next album up is 1973's Red Rose Speedway, credited to Paul McCartney & Wings. Please fill in your answers to the following questions and feel free to elaborate and/or use this thread to discuss the album.

1. When did you first hear Red Rose Speedway? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you?

This was my 7th Paul album, after Venus & Mars. It was the summer of 1977 and Wild Life and Red Rose Speedway were the only Paul albums I didn't have yet. I had enough money to buy one of them and after careful consideration, I went with Red Rose Speedway. It beat out Wild Life for the simple reason that it had more songs. I wanted my money's worth.

2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now?

Compared to the other Paul albums I had at the time, I put this one in the middle. Not as good as Venus & Mars or Band On The Run, but better than Wings At The Speed Of Sound and Ram.

3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest);

4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons & please don't include the 'bonus tracks'!

My Love is my favorite song on this album. I guess I'm a sucker for Paul's love songs. My least favorite is Get On The Right Thing. I don't dislike it, but I don't love it.

Thanks! ^_^

1. When did you first hear Red Rose Speedway? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you?

Actually, I purchased this album on cassette tape when I was about 9 years old, along with Venus & Mars, each on sale liquidation for $2.99 or so. I saw his face on the cover, knowing that I'd already established my strong admiration for him, so i had to bring them home. I hadn't really known of the Wings before that, so this album and Venus & mars introduced me to the Wings. To this day, they are among my favorites.

2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now?

Oh I loved it! I listened to it endlessly. I remember being really struck by Get On the Right Thing, Loup and Single Pigeon. I'd abandoned my obsession temporarily while trying to get through high school/college... but I refound the cassette after quitting theatre school and deciding to start a band. It was like reliving the first time you kissed someone... pure heaven. That's when I grew a deep appreciation for the overall warmth of the album, the killer basslines, and the intricacy of the overlapping melodies at the end of the medley. It's simply breathtaking. I remember lending this album to an old musical acquaintance, who wasn't fond of McCartney (because he'd not heard anything beyond the hits), and after a week I asked him what he thought, and he told me he hadn't taken it out of his discman since. I think it's one of Paul's most beautiful gems.

3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest);

1. Big Barn Bed - 10 (A very memorable intro to the album right off the bat. Great tom beat also!)

2. My Love - 10 (It's self explanatory, isn't it? This is one of Paul's most beautiful songs... I love the slight rotary on the keys, the insane vocals and slow fade-in. The lead is breathtakingly perfect too.)

3. Get On The Right Thing - 10 (Just incredible! The vocals are killer & the octave bassline is badass!)

4. One More Kiss - 8 (the great guitar licks throughout give it an extra point)

5. Little Lamb Dragonfly - 10 (This is another example of Paul being the master of melody. His voice sails beautifully throughout and the harmonies give me shivers. I love the transitions; they tumble so neatly after each other. Another gem. :) )

6. Single Pigeon - 10 (So simple, so catchy... brings back seas of childhood memories... "Me too, me too, me too, I'm a lot like youuuuuu..." :) )

7. When The Night - 7 (This is probably only my least favorite because it's got major competition. I think the vocals are outstanding, as well as the melody on the verse. The chorus reminds me of gospel music, of which i'm not a fan.)

8. Loup (1st Indian On The Moon) - (I absolutely love the bassline in this! He takes charge of the song with his slick playing.)

9. Medley; -

a) Hold Me Tight - 10 (Again, the chord transitions are so innovative! This was another favorite when i was young, and I can see why. The drums kick in and you can't sit still. You start belting the lyrics and waiting for that last "Hold me... tiiiiiiight!" )

B) Lazy Dynamite - 8 (I used to skip this one when I was young. I love the melody once again, but next to the others with all their swooping chord patterns, perhaps I found it a bit redundant.)

c) Hands Of Love - 9 (Another simple, yet contagious one! I love the vocal "horn imitations" at the break... fashionably Paul and quite effective. I love the guitar work in this one too.

d) Power Cut - 10 (Ah... you always wait for this one to come around. The intro is great! The melody is fab, as are the harmonies... love the rotary before fading into "There may be a miracle"... Catchy tom beat once again on the break. ANd of course, we witness Paul's genius at the end when all the preceding melodies overlap, proving him the crowned king of melody.)

McCartney Collection Bonus Tracks

10. C Moon - 9.5 (I've always loved the cheeky intro. This song practically taught me how to walk! lol I remember teaching it to my niece when she was 2 and I was 10. It's quite catchy... even better live!!)

11. Hi Hi Hi - 10 (Ah I love it! It's got attitude! This one proves that he isn't just a sappy love song kinda guy; he's a rockstar!)

12. The Mess - 10 (This one surprised me! The changes are quite progressive... ridiculously innovative. Quite the live performance, I must admit! Love the almost random chord to end the whole thing. Does anyone know when this was recorded and where?)

13. I Lie Around - 7 (I never really got into this one. It's alright and I do get around to listening to it if the sun's shining and I want to perk myself up... it's got a 70s sitcom feel to it, which either works or it doesn't, depending on my mood.)

4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons & please don't include the 'bonus tracks'!

My favorite.... It's so difficult to decide!! This being one of my favorite albums makes it almost impossible! But if i had to pick, I'd say "Get On The Right Thing". I just love the bass, the vocals, the backwards guitar, the harmonies.... everything about it!! It's got soul!! And I've loved it since I was a little girl. :)

My least favorite is "When The Night", for reasons I stated above. :)

Red Rose Speedway (1973)

A beautiful rose with only the odd thorn in the side...

"Red Rose Speedway", credited to Paul McCartney & Wings, was an undoubted improvement on 1971's "Wild Life", but still met with a mixed, predominantly lukewarm response from the music critics at the time. Originally planned as a double album, it was recorded throughout 1972, a year when Wings were busy touring universities and European venues and then, after being cut to a single album, was released in May 1973. The only single released from the album was "My Love", a tender love song which Paul wrote for Linda, featuring a blistering guitar solo from Henry McCullough. However, that certainly doesn't mean that it was the only great song on "Red Rose Speedway" - far from it.

Part of the appeal of this album is the eclectic quality of this collection of songs. There is a gentle country song, the pretty and melancholy "One More Kiss", a decent but slightly shambolic rocker with a great bass-line, "Big Barn Bed" and even a 11-minutes plus melodic medley which possibly has more ambition than substance, but it's still an enjoyable listen - "Power Cut" and the instrumental break, especially. Not everything works, though. I believe that "Get On The Right Thing" is a missed opportunity. It could have been a great track, but the production and arrangement do their best to mask the qualities of what is, essentially, a brilliant McCartney composition. The instrumental "Loup (1st Indian On The Moon)" is rather bizarre but is miles better than "Kreen-Akore", the instrumental from the 1970 release "McCartney".

"Little Lamb Dragonfly" is, for me, the highlight of the album. Incredibly beautiful with a fantastic vocal delivery, the music and Paul's voice just soar. This is one of the greatest Paul McCartney songs that most people simply don't know. "Single Pigeon" is also a very nice track but very much like "When The Night" and "Get On The Right Thing", it seems to have more potential than the performance ultimately gets out of it. The bonus tracks on this particular version of the album are the excellent single "C Moon"/"Hi Hi Hi" plus "The Mess" and "I Lie Around" which, to me, are average McCartney compositions. To surmise, "Red Rose Speedway" is a very likeable, listenable album, but if you are building or starting a post-Beatle McCartney collection, this is an album you should invest in after you've bought the truly great releases. Indeed, the first few plays may leave the listener feeling slightly non-plussed, but this album has subtle charms which means that I, and I believe most Paul McCartney fans, think of "Red Rose Speedway" fondly.
