Driving Rain is kind of to me like a modern Wild Life (getting back on subject how clever haha) in that is is unfinshed in places, but it is def the weaker of the two. Its inconsistant. something it also shares with Wildlife although for me Wildlife's good points (Tomorrow) outweigh the bad points (Bip Bop)

Also I think this album reflects his voice at its weakest. Press to play seemed a greater attempt and doing something different but instead of his voice letting him down it was instead some dogy 80's production (and Phil Collins  ) which he wasn't the only one to suffer from at the time
I'm a BIGGER Beatles fan than you and I'm an even BIGGER Wings fan than that...
'You're a Paul McCartney fan? No you're a Wings fan'. 'Thankyou Scotland' Ho Hey Ho...

A lot of mid eighties pop is like that unfortunatly but then Paul had the guts to try a record out like Press To Play then reject the style and move in the oppersite direction with quick recorded band rock'n'roll with The Russian Album. Actually I think Driving Rain is more an attept to be like Ram that failed. But to take you're point about getting back on topic, anyone know where the front cover of Wildlife was taken?

Here is my amazon review for Wings' debut. Again, if you like what I've written (and I'm aware that many of you may not), then please give me a "helpful review" vote at amazon, using the link below. Thanks. :)

Wings - Wild Life

You'll find quite a few hardcore McCartney fans who love this album. Unfortunately, I'm not one of them. I see plenty of merit in some of the tracks, in fact "Tomorrow" is undoubtedly one of Paul's lost gems, but - on the whole - "Wild Life" is the sound of somebody who has had a great idea but lacked the patience to wait a few months to get the inspiration and material to execute it well. After the saga of The Beatles, it was an admirable aim of Paul's to get back to basics, to form another group and to tour small venues such as clubs and Universities, but the quickly-recorded album they made was sub-standard. I would say that it hasn't stood the test of time, but it was reviewed poorly when it was released and also sold relatively few copies which, for an ex-Beatle, was quite shocking.

There are moments in this album which are almost unbelievable. By unbelievable, I mean that you would hardly believe that the undisputed musical genius who wrote some of The Beatles' greatest songs could release songs so poor. "Bip Bop", for example, is dreadful and childish. "Mumbo" has lyrics you can't understand, backed by a frenetic, but forgettable, heavy rock performance. A lot of the songs seem barely developed, such as the unlovable "I Am Your Singer" and the forgettable cover version of "People Are Strange". The title track "Wild Life" is over-long and strays into painful territory, although the lyrics are undoubtedly worthy.

Anyway, enough with the negativity. Every cloud has a silver lining and this album is no exception. "Dear Friend", Paul's message to John, is poignant and moving. "Some People Never Know" is a charming duet between Paul and Linda and, as I mentioned before, "Tomorrow" is a real diamond of a track, almost worth the price of the album itself. Almost. Personally, I don't regret buying this album, because it's part of Paul McCartney's history and there are a few moments that I really enjoy, but if you are building a Paul McCartney back-catalogue then this really should be one of the last albums of his you buy. It's not dreadful, but it's not exactly fantastic either.

Actually, as a footnote, the bonus tracks on this particular edition are definitely worth a listen. "Mama's Little Girl" is a lovely acoustic composition, perhaps not up there with "Mother Nature's Son", but it nearly reaches those heights. "Give Ireland Back To The Irish" (banned by the BBC at the time) is a simplistic but somehow powerful look at `the troubles' and "Little Woman Love" features a great piano riff and is very enjoyable, as long as you ignore the silly lyrics . The less said about "Mary Had A Little Lamb" the better of course, but it's worth a listen just to wonder what on earth Paul was thinking at the time. Actually, you can wonder that about the whole of this album, but that's Paul McCartney. One minute he's producing some of the most wonderful music you've ever heard, the next he's producing "Wild Life". That's part of the fun of being a Paul McCartney fan, though!

Oh, well spotted! I've been listening to a lot of Doors recently, so that was probably a subconscious typo. I could have sworn I wrote "Love Is Strange". :duh:

I figured it was subconscious...those things drive me mad. I just nearly did that in another thread writing John Lennon instead of McFly. Luckily I spotted my mistake before posting coz prob would have got lynched :giggle:

1. When did you first hear Wild Life? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you?
I bought it new at a bargain price. I think it was cheap 'cause it was so ill renowned. I remember that 'cause it was one of the few Beatle/ex-Beatle albums I didn't buy second hand.
I was 19 or 20

2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now?
I'd heard a snippet of the title track on a video special id' bought but can't remember playing the album much.
Now i've been listening to it on y/t I quite like it. Esp.Tomorrow and the title track. The rest are o.k and quite charming in their ramshakle way.

One of the last Macca albums I bought, I think I got it around six years ago.

2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now?

I thought it was a bit of a mixed bag and an album that would need a few 'listens' to get into. I loved 'Wild Life', and already loved 'Tomorrow' from Wingspan and still think it's the highlight of the album.

3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest);

1. Mumbo - 6
2. Bip Bop - 5
3. Love Is Strange - 5
4. Wild Life - 10
5. Some People Never Know - 7
6. I Am Your Singer - 7
7. Bip Bop Link - 4
8. Tomorrow - 10
9. Dear Friend - 7
10. Mumbo Link - 3

McCartney Collection Bonus Tracks

11. Give Ireland Back To The Irish - 1
12. Mary Had A Little Lamb - 3
13. Little Woman Love - 4
14. Mama's Little Girl - 5

4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons & please don't include the 'bonus tracks'!

'Tomorrow' is the best song in my opinion. Excellent vocals and feel, kind of rough and not too 'polished'. Least favourite, one of the 'Mumbo's' probably.
We all wanna change the world.
