1. When did you first hear Wild Life? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you?

Hmm, this one's a trick. I'm thinking I got this one toward the end of summer 2004, or possibly during the autumn. The exact timing escapes me. I know that I ordered it from an online vendor through Amazon because I liked the bonus track Give Ireland Back to the Irish and was interested to hear Dear Friend.

2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now?

First impressions were of a good but incomplete album, and that's the sense that stays with me to this day. If you exclude the two 40-second links there are really only eight songs, and one of those has no words, another is a cover, and the third may be the most dismally inane song of Paul McCartney's career. Plus the playing all around is a little slipshod. Good thing Dear Friend, Tomorrow, Some People Never Know, and You Are My Singer are so good. The extra tracks are a huge bonus too. I've warmed up to WILD LIFE over time - the same thing happened with MCCARTNEY, against which I've leveled many of the same criticisms - but I still view it as still one of Paul's lesser efforts.

3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest);

1. Mumbo - 8.5/10 ( C )
2. Bip Bop - 7.5/10 ( D )
3. Love Is Strange - 9/10 ( B )
4. Wild Life - 8.75 ( C+ )
5. Some People Never Know - 10/10 ( A+ )
6. I Am Your Singer - 9.25/10 ( B+ )
7. Bip Bop Link - 4/5
8. Tomorrow - 9.5/10 ( A )
9. Dear Friend - 10/10 ( A+ )
10. Mumbo Link - 4/5

McCartney Collection Bonus Tracks

11. Give Ireland Back To The Irish - 9.5/10 ( A )
12. Mary Had A Little Lamb - 9/10 ( B )
13. Little Woman Love - 9/10 ( B )
14. Mama's Little Girl - 10/10 ( A+ )

4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons & please don't include the 'bonus tracks'!

If we did include bonus tracks, I think it'd be Mama's Little Girl. But from the album proper, it's a toss-up between Some People Never Know and Dear Friend. It just depends on what kind of mood I'm in - they're both great songs that can stand with some of Paul's best work. Least favourite is, as you might've guessed, Bip Bop. It just doesn't work.

1. When did you first hear Wild Life? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you?

I was about 17 years old and bought it on cassettte for a very low price.

2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now?

I thought it was garbage. I listened to it twice and didn't listen to the cassette ever again. Years later, I replaced all of my cassettes with CDs and Wild Life was one of the last ones I replaced. I gave it a couple more listens after joining the Macca board and hearing people's views about it. It's fair to say that I've warmed to it and there are a couple of tracks I really love now. I still think it's the worst studio album Paul's ever produced, but I'm very fond of it.

3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest);

1. Mumbo - 4
2. Bip Bop - 2
3. Love Is Strange - 6
4. Wild Life - 5
5. Some People Never Know - 7
6. I Am Your Singer - 5
7. Bip Bop Link - 7
8. Tomorrow - 10
9. Dear Friend - 8
10. Mumbo Link - 5

McCartney Collection Bonus Tracks

11. Give Ireland Back To The Irish - 7
12. Mary Had A Little Lamb - 7
13. Little Woman Love - 8
14. Mama's Little Girl - 9

4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons & please don't include the 'bonus tracks'!

My favourite track is Tomorrow, it's a real grower and the ending is probably the best part of it. My least favourite is the absymal Bip Bop, probably the worst song Paul has ever committed to an album.

1. When did you first hear Wild Life? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you?

I first heard this album about 5 years ago. Only recently, however, have I paid much attention to it.

2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now?

My first impression of Wild Life was that it was McCartney's worst album, being a collection of half-finished ideas and recorded in a very amatuerish manner. I picked up the English import to get the bonus tracks, but never listened much. But, because of the over-zealous love of this album that a particular person on the pm.com board had, I began listening to the album with an open mind. I now rank it one of my favourites. I don't know why I had a change in heart--I think it's because I was originally looking for polished McCartney pop. Now that I am accustomed to the roughness of this piece, I actually prefer it to some of his other albums.

13. Little Woman Love - 10
14. Mama's Little Girl - 10

"Mumbo" is my favourite. A great rock sound, and I love the 'mumbo' lyrical nonsense. I also love the links. Nice touch.

My least favourites are "Wild Life" (which I have been told is quite good on the live bootlegs, but I haven't heard those) and "Dear Friend." Both of these are rather dreary numbers that end long after they've finished.
I took my brains out and stretched 'em on a rack
Now I'm not so sure I'm ever gonna get 'em back

1. When did you first hear Wild Life? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you?

This was a difficult album to get ahold of. I had the chance to buy the LP in the 70s, but chose not to. Later in the 80s when I tried to buy it, I couldn't find it anywhere. This became the only pre-CD era Paul album that I never bought on LP. I finally bought the CD in 1992.

2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now?

I think I would've hated it if I'd actually bought the LP. It's just not a great album. I can appreciate it now more than I ever would've when I was younger.

3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest);

I don't really feel right grading these songs. This is Paul McCartney. He's such a great talent and has given us all so much, I don't want to trash him for his one bad effort. Everyone's entitled to a bad day now every now and then.

Thanks! ^_^

You're welcome.
With great power comes great responsibility. With great age....

1. When did you first hear Wild Life? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you?

I think I was about 18. Got the CD when it was reissued in 1993 aged 20.

2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now?

Hardly any first impressions. I was buying so much Beatles solo work at the time that anything that didn't leap out at first listening tended to get left on the shelf. Now I find it quite enjoyable, not as bad as it's reputation and better than many other Macca albums. Just seems strange that he'd plumb for something so ruff and hits free at this point in his career.

3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest);

1. Mumbo - 7
2. Bip Bop - 4
3. Love Is Strange - 6
4. Wild Life - 7
5. Some People Never Know - 5
6. I Am Your Singer - 6
7. Bip Bop Link - 4
8. Tomorrow - 7
9. Dear Friend - 6
10. Mumbo Link - 6

McCartney Collection Bonus Tracks

11. Give Ireland Back To The Irish - 6
12. Mary Had A Little Lamb - 3
13. Little Woman Love - 6
14. Mama's Little Girl - 5

4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons & please don't include the 'bonus tracks'!

Mumbo is another one of those songs I know I shouldn't like but I do, it's about bugger all but is fun and my favorite here. It's then followed by another song about nothing but this onedoesn't get away with it and is the worst on show here. I've never understood Paul's relationship with this song, he claims it's the worst song he's ever written (although it isn't, there's several much worse on McCartney II alone) but then a couple of years after includes a version on the hits and best of compilation Wingspan. Give Ireland Back to the Irish sounds good but show Paul's politics can suffer from over simplification sometimes, shows his hearts in the right place though.

Pipes Of Peace is his laziest album, just a Tug Of War leftovers collection with a couple of new songs to act as tent poles.

exactly...thats why when MAF came out so soon after Chaos I was worried it was gonna be Tug of War/Pipes of Peace all over again. Luckily it wasnt :giggle:

I think he learnt a lesson after that, Press To Play may not be that great but at least he's making an effort to do something differant so it's an honourable failure. Just about everything since then has been fair to excellent.

hmmm I might say Driving Rain is an exception to that...its not great.I think I tend to listen to Press to Play than DR. Press to play has some interesting things to it...and would be far superior if the single version of Pretty little head was the album version

Driving Rain is, indeed, my least favorite from the last twenty years but I still prefer it to Press To Play. Driving Rain is another example of Paul trying something different although with his pedigree he has no need to. It's about as Low-fi as Macca gets!
