1. When did you first hear Ram? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you? Oh, I think RAM arrived just at the beginning of the summer of 2004, right after school got out. I can remember buying it for $12 at Borders, then coming back two days later to find they had lowered it to $8 on sale. That miffed me a little. 2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now? When I first heard RAM, I didn't really get it. I knew the critics had thought it was lightweight fluff in its day, and when I heard tracks like Monkberry Moon Delight and Smile Away and Heart of the Country I was inclined to agree with them. It was good stuff, it just didn't seem to have any substance, it was just a tad odd. So I listened a few more times, and after about the fourth or fifth listen, BAM!! Straight to my heart like a cannonball (to quote Van Morrison). Now I understand that the strangeness of RAM is what makes it work so well - it's off in its own little magical world, quite unlike anything Paul or anybody else has ever done. It's brilliant. ^_^ 3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest); 1. Too Many People - 10/10 ( A+ ) 2. 3 Legs - 8.5 ( C ) 3. Ram On - 9/10 ( B ) 4. Dear Boy - 10/10 ( A ) 5. Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey - 10/10 ( A+ ) 6. Smile Away - 8.5/10 ( C ) 7. Heart Of The Country - 9/10 ( A ) 8. Monkberry Moon Delight - 9.5 ( A ) 9. Eat At Home - 9/10 ( B ) 10. Long Haired Lady - 10/10 ( A+ ) 11. Ram On - 5/5 12. The Back Seat Of My Car - 10.5/10 ( A++ ) McCartney Collection Bonus Tracks 13. Another Day - 9.5/10 ( A ) 14. Oh Woman, Oh Why - 9/10 ( B ) 4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons & please don't include the 'bonus tracks'! There are a lot of great songs on RAM, but I've got to plump for one of the best album finales I've ever heard, The Back Seat of My Car - an epic, amazing masterpiece. Least favourite, hmm... I guess either Smile Away or 3 Legs, both of which are kind of fun, but not up to the rest of the album. |

1. When did you first hear Ram? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you? Bought it for myself about eight months ago now. Some time last year. I was 19. 2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now? Didn't really enjoy it that much the first time. The 2nd time it was growing on me and the 3rd time I totally loved it. Then I flipped out and listened to it loads all the time. Now I've given it time to settle 3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest); 1. Too Many People - 9 2. 3 Legs - 8 3. Ram On - 9 4. Dear Boy - 10 5. Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey - 10 +++ 6. Smile Away - 8 7. Heart Of The Country - 10 8. Monkberry Moon Delight - 9 9. Eat At Home - 7 10. Long Haired Lady - 7 11. Ram On - 8 12. The Back Seat Of My Car - 8 McCartney Collection Bonus Tracks 13. Another Day - 9 14. Oh Woman, Oh Why - 8 4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons & please don't include the 'bonus tracks'! My favourite's Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey, just cause of the way it changes, and the silly voices that Paul does. It's so incredibly catchy and very fun. I also love Heart Of The Country cause it's got a great melody and totally made me wanna pack up and move to Scotland or something! My least favourite track is probably Eat At Home or Long Haired Lady - just doesn't do as much for me, but really, the whole album's great and I love it. |

Please fill in your answers to the following questions and feel free to elaborate and/or use this thread to discuss the album. 1. When did you first hear Ram? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you? Heard the single "Uncle Albert" in 1971, bought the 45. Loved it, loved it, loved it. I was 13. Loved "Too Many People" the flip side, too. Heard a couple of other tracks now and then on the radio, like "Smile Away" and "Monkberry Moon Delight." 2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now? Finally heard the whole thing in the late 80's, early 90's. I loved it and kicked myself for not getting it years ago. The bruise just healed last week. 3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest); 1. Too Many People -10 2. 3 Legs -5 3. Ram On -7 4. Dear Boy -7 5. Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey -10 6. Smile Away -10 7. Heart Of The Country -8 8. Monkberry Moon Delight -8 9. Eat At Home -3 10. Long Haired Lady -2 11. Ram On -7 12. The Back Seat Of My Car -10 McCartney Collection Bonus Tracks 13. Another Day -10 14. Oh Woman, Oh Why -1 4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons & please don't include the 'bonus tracks'! "Uncle Albert" because it could have been a Beatle record. A background vocal sounds just like John. Plus, with all it's parts and layers, it's a mini-symphony, like "Bohemian Rhapsody" later. My least favorite is "Long Haired Lady." I always liked Linda, but her vocal is too prominent, and the song drags on for like an hour too long. |

1. When did you first hear Ram? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you? I don't remember--a friend had it and told me that it was one of Paul's better albums. I listened to a few cuts, but I was so into The Beatles that anything less than that was not worth my time. I liked a few tracks, but it was not The Beatles, and thus, not worth my time. I eventually came around to it, bought it, and I now like it much better than that first listen. 2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now? See above. 3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest); 1. Too Many People -10 2. 3 Legs -10 3. Ram On -8 4. Dear Boy -8 5. Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey -10 6. Smile Away -10 7. Heart Of The Country -9 8. Monkberry Moon Delight -6 9. Eat At Home -8 10. Long Haired Lady -8 11. Ram On -10 12. The Back Seat Of My Car -10 McCartney Collection Bonus Tracks 13. Another Day -8 14. Oh Woman, Oh Why -10 4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons & please don't include the 'bonus tracks'! The song that drew me to the album is "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey," and it remains my favourite. The attention to detail in the production is Beatle quality, as is the medley-like structure of the song. Least favourite is probably "Monkberry Moon Delight." The combination of the piano, McCartney's shouting, and Linda's nasal harmony just embarrasses me. |

1. When did you first hear Ram? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you? I bought 'Ram' when I was about 16 and I bought it for myself on cassette. 2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now? On first listening, I thought that a lot of the album was a little too lightweight and whimsical and, even though I'm a fan of McCartney's whimsy, I thought it was perhaps not serious enough for my liking. My opinion changed majorly with subsequent listens and I soon began to appreciate it for the work of utter genius it is - it's absolutely amazing and one of my favourite albums of all time. 3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest); 1. Too Many People - 10 2. 3 Legs - 9 3. Ram On - 9 4. Dear Boy - 10 5. Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey - 10 6. Smile Away - 10 7. Heart Of The Country - 10 8. Monkberry Moon Delight - 10 9. Eat At Home - 10 10. Long Haired Lady - 9 11. Ram On - 8 12. The Back Seat Of My Car - 10 McCartney Collection Bonus Tracks 13. Another Day - 10 14. Oh Woman, Oh Why - 7 4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons & please don't include the 'bonus tracks'! My favourite is Too Many People, although there are so many fantastic tracks here, each and every one of them could be counted as favourites. My least favourite is the reprise of 'Ram On', purely because it's the least essential track on the album albeit being a good 'link' between Long Haired Lady and The Back Seat Of My Car. It's a piece of brilliance from start to finish. :D |

1. When did you first hear Ram? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you? Last week along with McCartney 2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now? Instantly loved it and have played it an abnormal amount in the last week.In fact I've listen to very little of anyother stuff. Its a kind of obscure album I think 3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest); 1. Too Many People - 10 2. 3 Legs - 9 3. Ram On - 10 4. Dear Boy - 10 5. Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey - 10 6. Smile Away - 9 7. Heart Of The Country - 10 8. Monkberry Moon Delight - 9 9. Eat At Home - 10 10. Long Haired Lady - 10 11. Ram On - 10 12. The Back Seat Of My Car - 10 McCartney Collection Bonus Tracks 13. Another Day - 10 14. Oh Woman, Oh Why - 9 4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons & please don't include the 'bonus tracks'! Its really hard to choose a favourite one.Maybe Ram On just because I truely love the melody.Least favourite maybe 3 legs but I still love it. On another note my dad actually thought Another Day was a beatles song.He said he would have had that in his top 3 Beatles song so if bonus tracks were included that would be my favourite. Its been compared to songs like Lady Madonna and even Eleanor Rigby.I actually think its better than them |

Next up is an album credited to Paul & Linda McCartney, 1971's Ram. Please fill in your answers to the following questions and feel free to elaborate and/or use this thread to discuss the album. 1. When did you first hear Ram? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you? This was my 4th Paul album, after Wings Over America. I was given this on vinyl as a Christmas gift in 1976 when I was 9. I already had all of the Beatles studio albums and I was slowly working my way to the solo albums. 2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now? I didn't like it that much. Compared to Wings Over America and Band On The Run, this was a disappointment. I like it a lot better now, but I'm still not so sure why so many people love it as much as they do. 3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest); 1. Too Many People - 7 2. 3 Legs - 6 3. Ram On - 8 4. Dear Boy - 6 5. Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey - 9 6. Smile Away - 5 7. Heart Of The Country - 7 8. Monkberry Moon Delight - 8 9. Eat At Home - 5 10. Long Haired Lady - 6 11. Ram On - 8 12. The Back Seat Of My Car - 7 McCartney Collection Bonus Tracks 13. Another Day - 8 14. Oh Woman, Oh Why - 7 4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons & please don't include the 'bonus tracks'! I think Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey is easily the best song here. Smile Away just doesn't do it for me. Thanks! ^_^ You're welcome. |

I used to really dislike Long Haired Lady because I couldn't see past Linda's harsh vocals (Or is this the only thing you want me foooooorr) at the start of the song, but I really enjoy it now - and Linda's part makes me smile rather than wince. ^_^ |

I cant believe I put 3 Legs as my least favourite because now I absolutely adore this song.I'm even slowly learning to play it on the guitar.I can sort of hear the tune but as I'm really bad on guitar its pretty cool.I love Paul's vocals on it. Been listening to this a lot recently |

Isn't it funny how that happens sometimes? It really amazes me how often a song that is one of my least favorites on an album after the first listen or two can suddenly morph into one of my favorites. |

Here is my amazon review for "Ram". Again, I'd be most grateful if you could give me a "helpful vote" on amazon if you believe that my review would help someone deciding whether to buy the album or not to make their mind up. The link is at the bottom of the review. Thanks. :) Ram - Paul & Linda McCartney “Ram” remains my favourite post-Beatles release by Paul McCartney. Although it faces stiff competition for that title from a handful of other fine albums, there is something rich, varied and magical about “Ram” which, for me, means that I keep on coming back to this particular release than any other. Despite there being a few mild jibes against Lennon and the other Beatles, the whole album is more an expression of Paul’s domestic bliss and happiness with Linda than anything else and the key to this album’s success is that it is expressed in an exuberantly playful and delightfully creative manner. It was written largely on Paul’s farm on the Mull of Kintyre in Scotland and recorded in New York in late 1970. The same sessions also produced great songs such as “Dear Friend”, “Get On The Right Thing” and “Little Lamb Dragonfly” (all to appear on subsequent albums), as well as the “Another Day” single, so it is more than fair to say that Paul was in rich songwriting form during this period. Although there is a little more polish on this album than Paul’s post-Beatles debut, “McCartney”, the album does have a slightly home-made charm to it, with more than a few rough edges here and there, although there are some truly beautifully recorded and arranged songs here. The vocals and harmonies on “Dear Boy” (aimed at Linda’s ex-husband, not John Lennon as contrary to popular belief) are reminiscent of Brian Wilson at his most creative. “Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey” is a song in three parts, a piece of zany genius, which is - at first - slow, dreamy and melodic and then subsequently infuriatingly catchy - you’ll be humming or whistling for days after first hearing it. “The Back Seat Of My Car”, the album’s epic closer, is perhaps a minute too long, but you can forgive Paul his excesses on this track, being a melodic anthem to young love which really is rather special. Other highlights include the truly brilliant opener “Too Many People”, a great rocker which features a stomping bassline and some inspired lead guitar work and excellent vocals by the McCartneys. “Heart Of The Country” is a charming tribute to Paul‘s love of his country home with Paul’s voice and acoustic guitar blending together perfectly. “Eat At Home” is also a fantastic toe-tapping rock song and has a very catchy melody as well as playful lyrics. The rollicking “Monkberry Moon Delight” is another superb highlight on this superb album, featuring some very colourful , whimsical and poetic lyrics. The rest of the tracks on the album are all pretty good too including the bluesy “3 Legs”, the raucous, silly “Smile Away” and the ukelele-driven, gently romantic “Ram On”. I even really enjoy “Long-Haired Lady”, but have to admit that Linda’s vocals on this track do grate just a little. Still, this album has a great balance of material on it and Paul rarely gives in to excess or suffers from a lack of quality control. Virtually every positive characteristic of Paul’s songwriting is showcased on “Ram” and it remains, to this day, one of the finest examples of his talent. link |
