1. When did you first hear McCartney? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you? I got this for myself I'm thinking shortly after the start of 2004, February or possibly even January. That would make me 13. I remember buying it along with John Lennon's IMAGINE on the same day at Borders. B) 2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now? I don't remember exactly how I felt about MCCARTNEY when I first heard it, but over time I developed a rather poor opinion of the album - the homeyness and lack of polish that so beguiled others turned me off, too many half-baked ideas executed in a half-assed way. I was especially down on the instrumentals. Lately however I've rediscovered it a bit, and if I'm not totally sold yet, I'm more fond of it now than the day I bought it. ^_^ 3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest): 1. Lovely Linda - 4/5 2. That Would Be Something - 8.5/10 ( C ) 3. Valentine's Day - 4/5 4. Every Night - 9.5/10 ( A ) 5. Hot As Sun/Glasses - 8.75 ( C+ ) 6. Junk - 10/10 ( A+ ) 7. Man We Was Lonely - 9.25/10 ( B+ ) 8. Oo You - 9/10 ( B ) 9. Momma Miss America - 9/10 ( B ) 10. Teddy Boy - 9/10 ( B ) 11. Singalong Junk - 10/10 ( A+ ) 12. Maybe I'm Amazed - 11/10 ( A++ ) 13. Kreen-Akrore - 8.75/10 ( C+ ) 4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons! There are very few album on which Maybe I'm Amazed could possibly feature where it wouldn't be my favourite track, and MCCARTNEY ain't one of 'em - rock's single greatest love song. For least favourite I have to plump for either That Would Be Something or Valentine's Day, which seem the most unfinished of the lot. |

Well, I heard this album in 1970 in my junior year in high school, so it's been a long time. However, this album is one of my favorites and I do have a "car copy" so I listen to it quite a bit. I love the opening Lovely Linda, Every Night, both Junks and of course Maybe I'm Amazed. I like all the others, just not as much, but I never skip over them. I love the cadence and feel of this album. I enjoy it's simplicity, but then again I like Ram, Backyard Plus and other raw, unfinshed albums from Paul - he is the only artist that I feel like that about. Besides, I love those cherries! |

1. When did you first hear McCartney? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you? My dad bought it for me when I was about 13--I was laid up in bed with some illness which I can't recall, and, knowing I liked The Beatles, he got it for me to enjoy in my bed-ridden solace. 2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now? I liked the album alright--was a bit confused as to why some of the tracks sounded unfinished, and I felt a bit guilty for wishing that my dad had gifted me with Abbey Road instead. 3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest); 1. Lovely Linda - 6 2. That Would Be Something - 8 3. Valentine's Day - 8 4. Every Night - 9 5. Hot As Sun/Glasses - 10 6. Junk - 10 7. Man We Was Lonely - 8 8. Oo You - 8 9. Momma Miss America - 8 10. Teddy Boy - 8 11. Singalong Junk - 8 12. Maybe I'm Amazed - 10 13. Kreen-Akrore - 10 4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons! "Maybe I'm Amazed" is an obvious choice for a favourite; however, my first favourite on this album (back when I was sick in bed, mind you) was "Kreen-Akrore." I had a whole storyline to go along with it. Lately, I've really enjoyed "Hot As Sun/Glasses," as it sounds like a late-50s rock instrumental that could have been on The Beatles BBC album. The 'Glasses' part is a nice reminder that Paul is an avant-garde hippie, in his own right. Least favourite? "The Lovely Linda" isn't bad, it's just not a real song. Not a great choice for album opener, either. I think it would have made a great uncredited inner band extra (in the days of LPs, anyway). |

1. When did you first hear McCartney? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you? I was about fifteen or sixteen years old, in 1991, and I bought it on cassette because I had loved the 'McCartney' tracks in the Unplugged set. 2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now? I thought it was a little ramshackle, but very charming. I loved Every Night much better than the Unplugged version and, of course, it included the mighty maybe I'm Amazed which I'd heard many times before. I think it's a work of understated genius now and love it's home-made feel very much. ^_^ 3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest); 1. Lovely Linda - 7 2. That Would Be Something - 8 3. Valentine's Day - 8 4. Every Night - 10 5. Hot As Sun/Glasses - 8 6. Junk - 10 7. Man We Was Lonely - 7 8. Oo You - 9 9. Momma Miss America - 9 10. Teddy Boy - 6 11. Singalong Junk - 10 12. Maybe I'm Amazed - 10 13. Kreen-Akrore - 5 4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons! My favourite is either Junk or Maybe I'm Amazed... it's very difficult to choose between the two because I love them for very different reasons. My least favourite is Kreen-Akrore because I think it's below par. |

1. When did you first hear McCartney? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you? A whole week ago but have listened to it a lot so I am going on first impressions now. 2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now? The first listen I really liked it.Then I listen to Ram for the first time straight after. That is far superior than this.I think its a cool album but maybe unfinished to an extent 3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest); 1. Lovely Linda - 9 2. That Would Be Something - 8(I think I'm to used to the unplugged version now) 3. Valentine's Day - 8 4. Every Night - 10 5. Hot As Sun/Glasses - 8 6. Junk - 10 7. Man We Was Lonely - 10 8. Oo You - 9 9. Momma Miss America - 10-probably one of the best instrumentals ever 10. Teddy Boy - 10 11. Singalong Junk - 10 12. Maybe I'm Amazed - 10 13. Kreen-Akrore - 9 4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons!Well the songs that are on wingspan I have a habbit of skipping on this because I have heard them so many times now so if I dont count the wingspan songs then its Teddy Boy that is my fave. Least favourite maybe Valentine's Day just because i prefer the rest. |

1. When did you first hear McCartney? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you? I was a teenager and I bought it when it first came out, I was very excited to get Paul's much anticipated solo album. 2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now? It wasn't quite up to his Beatle standards, and yet I liked the rawer feel, though I noticed he had some unfinished songs, which he has a tendancy towards doing. He needed John's input to help complete them! ;) 3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest); 1. Lovely Linda - So short...wish he'd have finished it, I'll give it an 8 2. That Would Be Something - 9 3. Valentine's Day - 8 4. Every Night - 10 5. Hot As Sun/Glasses - 8 6. Junk - 10 7. Man We Was Lonely - 9 8. Oo You - 9 9. Momma Miss America - 8 10. Teddy Boy - 9 11. Singalong Junk - 9 12. Maybe I'm Amazed - 7 13. Kreen-Akrore - 7 4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons! I'm sorry, but unlike most people, I'm very tired of "Maybe I'm Amazed", so I guess it would be my least favorite, next to "Kreen-Akore". I love the poignancy in "Junk"...it always made me feel sad for the poor little unappreciated things, and therefore people. I would play along with my mother's guitar...or try to, on that track. |

I listened to this album again a couple of days ago - it's really quite special. It's got such a ramshackle, home-grown appeal to it... it must be one of my most loved and most played of Paul's albums.
^_^ Junk is absolutely heavenly. :worship: |

Welcome to the first of the solo album discussion threads! We begin with Paul's 1970 debut (discounting The Family Way OST) McCartney. Please fill in your answers to the following questions and feel free to elaborate and/or use this thread to discuss the album. 1. When did you first hear McCartney? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you? One day when I was 9 years old I found a 10 dollar bill on the ground. I was pretty conflicted on what I should do, so I went to my mother and asked her. She asked me what I thought I should do and - being 9 years old - I told her I should keep it. I reasoned that I found it and whoever lost it would be unlikely to know where to look for it. She didn't like that answer and took the money away from me. About a week later I told my grandmother this story. Feeling sorry for me and being a grandmother, she gave me $10. I'd like to think I was just innocently relaying the events of my life to her, but I'm sure I knew what I was doing. With my free money I bought Paul's first solo album. This was my 5th Paul album, after Ram. 2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now? At the time, this album was not considered one of his best. A lot of people didn't like it at all. I wasn't really sure what to expect. I liked Band On The Run, but didn't really like Wings At The Speed Of Sound. I think I had mixed feeling when I first heard it and I like it more than I did then, but it's still not one of my favorites. 3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest); 1. Lovely Linda - 7 2. That Would Be Something - 7 3. Valentine's Day - 6 4. Every Night - 8 5. Hot As Sun/Glasses - 6 6. Junk - 9 7. Man We Was Lonely - 7 8. Oo You - 6 9. Momma Miss America - 6 10. Teddy Boy - 7 11. Singalong Junk - 8 12. Maybe I'm Amazed - 10 13. Kreen-Akrore - 7 4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons! It's easy to pick a favorite on this album. Maybe I'm Amazed is just a great song. I still don't see why it wasn't a single. My least favorites are the instrumentals. I'm not sure that they really add anything to this album. Thanks! ^_^ You're welcome. |

1. When did you first hear McCartney? Did you buy it for yourself and approximately how old were you? Although I do have a vinyl copy of this album I don't remember getting it and if it was defiently sitting up in the loft next to Ram I would have sworn that I never had this album till I bought the first set of eight Macca CD re-issues in 1993 (everything from McCartney to London Town) so I was 20. 2. What were your first impressions of the album and what is your opinion of this album now? What a great little nugget, none of the big band, big production of the Wings albums that were soon to come. This sounds like Uncle Paul sitting in the garden on a sunny afternoon entertaining us with some pretty melodies and off the cuff bits of fun. Sounds quite evocative of a man moving from hanging with his mates to hanging with the wife and kids now. 3. If you care to, please rate the tracks out of 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest); 1. Lovely Linda - 7 2. That Would Be Something - 8 3. Valentine's Day - 4 4. Every Night - 8 5. Hot As Sun/Glasses - 5 6. Junk - 7 7. Man We Was Lonely - 7 8. Oo You - 6 9. Momma Miss America - 6 10. Teddy Boy - 7 11. Singalong Junk - 7 12. Maybe I'm Amazed - 10 13. Kreen-Akrore - 6 4. Which is your favourite and least favourite track? Please give reasons! Maybe I'm Amazed has always been my favorite but since the 7th of August 2004 even more so as Malcolm, the organist at our church, lernt it up on the piano so Caz could walk down the isle to this tune. I would imagine that everyone would pick one of the more incidental jams as their least favorite, although they do help to give this album it's charactor. For me it's Valentine's Day. Here's my Amazon review for Paul's solo album. I'd be grateful if (using the link at the bottom of the review) you left me "positive feedback". Thanks. :) Paul McCartney’s first solo release after leaving The Beatles is a simple, charming, homemade album, with some tracks emitting an unfinished demo-like aura which, strangely enough, is the appeal of this real gem in Paul’s back catalogue. I bought this album for the first time nearly 20 years ago and it has been a regular visitor to my CD player ever since. There are many things about this release which make it so likeable - there are classic McCartney compositions such as the gorgeous “Every Night”, the beautiful “Junk” and the timeless, impeccable “Maybe I’m Amazed”, which remains one of the greatest love songs ever written by any artist. There are also tracks which are the sound of McCartney letting go, jamming and making music for music’s sake, such as the fantastic “Momma Miss America” and the catchy, bluesy “Oo You”. Paul raids a couple of his previously written or unfinished compositions such as “Hot As Sun”, an instrumental written in the late ‘50s, and “Teddy Boy” which was written in 1968 but never appeared on a Beatles release (apart from the “Anthology”). The rest are experimental, enjoyable glimpses into Paul’s newly found creativity as a solo artist. The whole album is an interesting statement from somebody who has found a new, unwanted artistic license to do anything he pleases - and “McCartney” is his response. I readily admit that I love this album, despite the flaws and the indulgences, but the warmth and playfulness Paul’s 1970 release radiates more than compensates for the one or two moments which don’t quite work. This album is probably one of the greatest responses to the people who criticise Paul’s post-Beatles output without knowing the depth of his catalogue. Some of the tracks gained exposure thanks to Cameron Crowe’s great film, “Jerry Maguire”, which featured “Singalong Junk” and “Momma Miss America” but this fantastic slice of McCartney remains one of the best kept secrets in Paul’s closet. If you want a real treat, then invest in this album, but be warned - it may make you want to buy everything that Paul has ever released. I know I did - and I didn‘t regret it. http://www.amazon.co.uk/review/R3LB5JJDP83QKY/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm |
