Sorry it's taken me so long to write up Friday's events, but I was too exhausted Friday night and too busy yesterday. Well, we couldn't have picked a better day for it - the weather was gorgeous, maybe a little too hot, but no-one really complained that much. Fiona and I met glass_0ni0n (Lauren), Ringo11 and Bec Walker at Covent Garden tube station at 11:30 a.m. and after a short while & some brief introductions we walked to a local veggie restaurant, Food For Thought, and waited for it to open at midday. Bec brought a friend but we never really got to meet him as he had to leave very soon after our brief introductions due to a family crisis. The conversation was already flowing, albeit the kind of faltering conversation between people who had mostly never met each other before - there were plenty of laughs & smiles, so the signs were good. We'll let Lauren explain about the Kangaroo burger, if she wants to. The food in Food For Thought was excellent - most of us had the Jamaican Stew & rice which was a slightly spicy dish based around black-eye beans, spinach & sweet potato (amongst others) whilst Fiona had the stir-fried vegetables and wished she'd had the Jamaican Stew. A couple of us had dessert - which was also very tasty. After we'd all finished our food and Fiona had stashed half a chocolate brownie in her purse, we took a slow walk to Covent Garden market and had a browse in the England Rocks shop which sells merchandise and memorabilia from English rock musicians. It's pretty amazing to look at names such as The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Who and all of the different bands featured in that shop and to think that they made such a huge worldwide impact when they all came from this comparitively tiny island. They sell John Entwistle's old fruit (slot) machine in there for a few thousand pounds if anyone's interested. We then took a walk to The Strand and, after a water stop, caught a bus to Baker Street tube station. The bus was really baking hot and Lauren kept us all entertained by doing a series of burps & belches which shook the bus and made people sitting at the front turn around in wonderment. It was a lengthy journey because of the traffic and, although everyone was melting, it wasn't bad at all with plenty of chatting and joking going on. We got to Baker Street shortly before 2:00 p.m. and made our way to the tube station where we met up with tonyhemp (Tony), ohnotjimagain (Jim) and his wife who were celebrating their (I think it was 27th) wedding anniversary - so it was very good of them to spend it with us! We waited for a little while in case manon turned up, but there was no sign so after some introductions, we went foward to The London Beatles Store where people (well, those who hadn't been to the store before) enthusiastically browsed. After everyone had seen everything they wanted to see and Tony had bought his $8 shot glass, we moved next door to the new Beatles Museum which is in the (air conditioned!) basement of the Elvis store next door. Howard, the owner of the Beatles store, museum and England Rocks, gave us a discount of 50% for our party of eight but the admission price is only £1 each initially anyway. It's not exactly huge, but there are some very interesting and funny pieces in the Beatles museum (Beatles sticky-tape from the Philippines, anyone?) including many autographed items, some Stuart Sutcliffe artwork, a Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl engraved crystal bowl, a signed copy of John & Yoko's Grapefruit, plus many other rare and obscure items, posters & promotional cutouts. Bec particularly liked the life-sized cutout of Paul McCartney & wanted to wake up with it in her room every morning! The next stop was to get eight hot & thirsty people some refreshments, so we moved onto the Met Bar by Baker Street station & had a drink & some chips (French Fries) and a chat. Lauren & Fiona also had a huge piece of Chocolate Fudge Cake each which was so big, rich & delicious, neither could finish... I did my gentlemanly duty and finished Fiona's piece for her (well, it's the only polite thing to do, isn't it? ). After everyone had finished their drinks & food we caught another (crowded) bus to St. John's Wood where we assembled outside Paul McCartney's London house, hoping for a glance of the great man. Some photos were taken and Tony got reprimanded by one of Paul's security men for taking a photo over the gate. Having seen the photo and the fact that those famous gates slowly swung partly open for the security guy to talk to Tony which was quite exciting, it was well worth it. There was a pap photographer sitting in an SUV nearby with his engine idling, so Lauren went over & had a chat to see if Paul was expected soon. The photographer told Lauren that Paul had not long left Peasmarsh (his Sussex farm) by car so probably wouldn't be back in central London for a long while, if at all. That got me thinking about what it must be like being Paul... where you've got people outside your home(s) day and night just waiting to photograph you and to report on all of your movements, where hardly anything you do is private. The price of fame is very high and it saddened me to think of someone I admire so much going through that daily. It surprises me that he's kept living in this country for so long if that's how the press continually treats him. Of course, recent events have meant that Paul is of greater interest to the press right now, but still - it must be very distressing to Paul and I sincerely hope that he doesn't allow it to affect him too much. Anyway, that's the end of my editorial, back to the meet-up... After spending a little while resting & taking photos, we made our way to the Abbey Road studios and were there at around 5:45 until 6:20 p.m. We read the graffiti on the walls outside, watched other people having their photos taken on the famous Abbey Road zebra crossing (some nearly getting theirselves killed) and one woman (not in our group!) must have crossed about a dozen times - some in some very odd ways. Fiona & I waved to the Abbey Road webcam for a while at about 6:10 and hoped that people could see us... because we felt very silly doing it. After watching a couple of tourists actually go through the gates and get their photo taken on the steps of the famous studios, a few of us got bold and did the same... even taking a breather on the steps for five minutes. Nobody in the studios seemed to mind, so that was great. After a while there, it seemed apparent that everyone was flagging a little in the heat, with half of the group on one side of the crossing sitting on a wall and the other half sitting on a wall on the other side of the crossing, many fanning themselves! We then moved on, via Paul's road again, to find a pub in which to end the evening. Ringo11 left us at that point, so we said our goodbyes to her - it was great to meet her, she's a really warm, witty, sweet person. After a little searching and wandering, we found a pub that wasn't too packed and, more importantly, had air conditioning - The Lords Tavern, just by Lords Cricket Ground. It was there we finished our evening, with a few drinks & more than a little conversation. Everyone appeared to have enjoyed the day and I think everyone was glad that nobody had turned out to be internet 'nut-jobs'. Jim & his wife left a couple of hours before Tony, Bec, Fiona & I, presumably to enjoy the rest of their anniversary - hope you had a good evening - they were two really lovely people and it was a pleasure to be in their company all day - Lauren also departed around that time to get home for dinner - thanks to her for coming & being her usual fun self! We finally left at just before eleven... I think Bec and I were suitably refreshed whereas Tony & Fiona had mainly (& probably sensibly) stuck to soft drinks towards the end of the evening. We weaved our way back to St. Johns Wood tube station, all heading back to our homes & hotels. All-in-all, I think it was a great day and I think it was a success. It was great to meet Tony & Bec... Tony is fantastic in 'real-life', a really great, funny guy and Bec is a great person as well - an interesting & funny conversationalist - and a huge Beatles fan. Thanks for coming such a long way from Leeds for the meet-up, it was brilliant to have you with us. It was wonderful meeting so many Beatles fans & like-minded people and was probably a better day than we ever could have envisaged. We'll probably have another meet-up in a couple of months at a time that is mutually convenient to a sizeable number of members. As ever, more news nearer to the time. I hope you can forgive the tardiness of this report but, as you can see, this took quite a while to write and manon, please let us know what happened to you as we're concerned that we left you behind somewhere! Thats a wonderful report of the day Andy. I can't really add anymore. Both Bapsy and myself had a wonderful day with really nice Beatle fans. An Anniversary to remember.(yes it was 27 years). Count me in on anymore 'Beatle' days. or if anyone wants to meet just for a drink and chat in evenings count me in on that also
I hope you had a good flight back home Tony. |

Andy, great, thorough report, and lovely pics from you and Tony. Thanks for sharing them with us sad little envious Yank fans.
Way to go Tony getting your cool photo (and getting in trouble)!Ok, all of you, and that is all of you (esp. Merry) can come and stay at my house in Maryland -- very close to the disturbing capital of the U.S. Washington, DC. I promise to be a good tour guide! My five-year-old girl will be amazed that other people besides her mom love the Beatles. Really though we should have a U.S. based board meet-up! I would certainly go! As I have said before, NYC comes to mind as a locale (coinciding with the Beatle fest of course) but Vegas sounds REALLY good too....

Andy, great review and photos!! Maybe you can get a part-time job with one of the red-tops and teach 'em how it's done.
I'm sorry I missed you all on the webcam. . . I got on just a wee bit late, but I watched for at least an hour. That's one BUSY crossing. Some of the drivers looked as though they weren't going to stop for pedestrians.
Here in the states, drivers must stop when a pedestrian is in a crosswalk. Is that the law in the UK?? My hat's off to Tony for having the nerve to get that wonderful photo. . . glad we now have a board where such a photo can be posted!!
What a great-looking group of people!! I look forward to reading posts and seeing photos from the others at the meeet-up. Oh, and let me throw my hat into the ring. . . you guys are most welcome here in Los Angeles. Lots to see and do here!! I'd love to play tour guide.

Thanks Bev - yup, it's law that they're supposed to stop when people cross on zebra crossings, but unfortunately London drivers are very aggressive and don't always observe the law to the letter. I hope the remaining boardies who attended will also give their accounts of the day... I hope I haven't scared them off!

When I was in London and in front of Paul's house at Cavendish the gate opened too. I almost died. It was one of Paul's security guys and some workmen. They were refurbishing the top room in the front. (saw a ladder there). Probably for that party Paul held Too bad Paul didn't come out when that gate opened. No wait, I WOULD have died then....

Anyone who wants to donate mileage to them......feel free!!! Then all you need is lots of Holiday time. :-) We're having a get together August 11-13th. Anyone in the Chicago area who wants to come by on Saturday or Friday too if they want to stay in a hotel near by is more than WELCOME to come. My house is all booked up. But the more the merrier. Thanks for the report Andy! I had an awesome time, and it was great to meet so many other Beatles/Paul fans in real life - normally I just get told to shut up, but for once I could actually just be myself and have a laugh, n not be embarrassed to talk about Macca as much as I want, As soon as we left each other on the tube I realised that I'd allowed you to pay for my drinks all night and felt really bad. I must owe you about a tenner or something, I'll make sure I give it you next time. Thanks for posting all them pics as well. I had a bit of a disaster on Saturday which I'm really gutted about. I got caught in a big storm, my camera got wet, and all the pics I took from the meet up got wiped off!! I was seriously distressed at the time cause I had some good ones, but it looks like everyone else did too. Oh and Tony, if you have any more, please post em. Didn't you take a couple in the pub?? So anyway, I had a great time and I'd definitely love to do it again, hopefully with even more people! Next time we should check out Saville Row and Soho Square as well. EDIT: Just realised this is my 100th post here. Nice one!

Yes, great pictures, everyone!
You know, I pictured Paul's home as a little larger and more ornate than it actually is, that's the first time I've ever seen it! For now, trips like these are on my "wish list", for someday, maybe. I'd love to go to Chicago and meet my buddies here. And Lisa (Jacaranda), you're such a sweetheart, I'd love to come and visit you, too! Right now my budget just won't allow for much, though...but in perhaps in the future! Anyhow, it's wonderful to see what a good time everyone had last week, just wish I could've seen you on the Abbey Road cam. Merry

Question for you guys... is that another house next door to the left? Or is that part of Paul's house? I'm confused because I thought he lived on several acres of property, and it appears that there's another house very close. |

OK, now I'm totally lost.... This is the house in London, no? Pardon my lack of geographic knowledge of the UK, but where is the other house? Where does he typically reside? Which house is it that Heather just bought a place near? Is it near this one or the other one? :hmm: |

That is the house in London! He has a few houses, couple here in the States, the one in Scotland, one in Sussex, and the town house in London. The one that Heather supposedelly bought is in Sussex as is he spends most of the time there and as well as in London. |

Paul has two houses in Sussex. One is the Peasmarsh farm in East Sussex - the big farm estate he bought with Linda. The second is a town-house by the sea in Hove, near Brighton on the south coast - that's the one he bought with Heather and the one Heather currently calls home.

I've been to Cavendish and that is what it looks like from the street. That is the only house I've been to of Paul's which he currently owns or resides. I have been to Forthlin Road and laid in the bed. I've also been to all of the council houses where he grew up in Liddypool. One my tour guide said the guy was grumpy and would kick me off the property. I must look okay because he invited me in.

Merry
