Best Wishes for my Girl; Lottie's ill

Just wanted to let my friends know that my little girl is quite ill at the moment and I may not be around as much for a few days.

She has cultivated a massive kidney infection, and her kidneys are actually bleeding. She's passing quite a lot of blood in her urine and she's really having a hard time of it.

Charlotte is on antibiotics for the infection, and has to have ultrasounds every few days to check on the bleeding. Once that has cleared, then she will be checked for any damage to her kidneys or bladder, permanent or otherwise.

Needless to say, I am beside myself.

Oh ((((Clare)))), my thoughts and heart are with you! I know how it feels to deal with an ill child, you can worry yourself sick! Please try not to worry too much (I know, easier said then done!) but as someone said before me, children are remarkably resilient and usually bounce back much faster and with fewer problems than we grown-ups!

Sending lots of love and best wishes your way for a speedy recovery!

When you get a chance, please keep us updated, I'll be thinking of you and little Charlotte!

Clare, I hope Lottie is well soon. I know I'm a world away, but if there's anything I can do to help, let me know.

I know how I feel when my cat children are sick. Can't imagine how I'd feel if it were a real child.

Get well soon, Lottie, so mum can get some sleep.

UPDATE: It's just about 9:45am here and I haven't had a wink of sleep. I'm using an internet cafe at the hospital to let my friends know what's going on.

Charlotte woke up shrieking at about 10pm last night and continued to scream...and you don't know what fear is until you've heard your child shriek like she did.

She wouldn't let me touch her, especially around the abdomen/groin region, so I wrapped her up in about three blankets and got her to the nearest hospital. They took one look at her and sent her straight to the Children's Hospital.

Anyway, after a barrage of tests, it turns outs that my three year old daughter was attempting to pass a kidney stone! For Christ's sake, she's THREE!!

Apparently the stone was about the size of a marble, and was lodged in her ureter (the tubes that drain her kidneys), which was causing the bleeding.

OK, so the doctors had to put my Lottie under twilight sedation and work the stone without causing anymore damage. She is now resting peacefully, but needs to be monitored regularly for the next few days.

Thankyou for everyone's concern - it is so much appreciated.

UPDATE: They have sent us back to our local hospital and have Charlotte on two hourly observations. My mother is with her at the moment, having sent me home for a shower and something to eat.

She is a lot better since they removed the stone, and after a couple more days rest, she'll be allowed home on Saturday.

She will be having more scans to figure out why such a young child developed a kidney stone, and regularly monitored to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Again, thank you all so much for your support. :)

Clare, so sorry to hear of your child's distress, but glad to know that the source of the pain has been removed.

My best friend went through the same thing once and said it was the worst pain in the world. After a week of recovery and strong pain meds, he was back to normal in no time. I wish a speedy recovery for you both!!

Sounds like things are improving nicely Clare. What a horrible thing for a tot to go through My father and oldest son suffered from those - can't imagine it happening to such a little one. I hope they can prevent it from ever happening again - the size of a marble is huge! Thanks for the update and get some rest for yourself.

Take care Clare.

((((Clare)))) I just saw this post and read through the pages. I'm glad the Dr.'s found out what was wrong with Charlotte. How unusual for a 3 year old to have kidney stones and yes they are one of the worse pains. I can't imagine what it was like for your daughter for the pain and for you to watch her go through that. I hope she passes it soon and is home enjoying Aunt Betsy's candy.

If there's anything we can do, maybe all send cards to her, let us know.

Lottie is home!! I'm so relieved! She was doing so well today, like nothing was wrong, the doctors let her come home tonight instead of tomorrow morning!

Her urine has to be monitored daily for a couple of weeks to check the urea levels (do you have any idea how to get a toddler to pee in a cup?) apparently her levels had been elevated since she was tiny and the build up caused the stone. I kept asking why it wasn't picked up sooner, and the hospital said they didn't know.

Anyway, she is safe and home now, but her diet will have to change (no more salt - added or otherwise) and she is tucked up on the couch watching her favourite Hi-5 DVD.

I'm so relieved. :)

Edited to add: I am so very grateful to have friends like all of you. I love you all.

We love you too - glad she's home safe & sound! ^_^

How to get a toddler to pee in a cup? Make a game of it, I suppose! :P Mind you, if you do that, there's always the danger that she'll enjoy the game too much and pee in all of your cups. May taint your early morning coffee a little... :D

Glad to hear she is home with you again!

Hopefully you have been able to relax a bit now. I can't imagine how scary it must have been for you to see her in such pain and not being able to help.

I think Andy made a good suggestion, make a game out of it.

I work for a urologist and the youngest person I have seen to get stones was 12 and he made the comment about that kid being young to get stones, so your little one getting them definately is very strange.

Do you also have to strain her urine at all?

Great news Clare! I be you're so relieved. Hey, I can hardly pee into a cup, so I imagine there's a real trick to it for a toddler. I know when I was potty training my boys, I use to put cheerios in the toilet and told them to aim!! Let's see...what could we do for a little girl??

Wonderful news, Clare. You must be so relieved. Now to figure out why a three year old got a kidney stone.

I sure hope Lottie never gets another one.

I have a hard time hitting the cup myself. I used to have to take in cat urine, so I have some idea of what you're going through. At least Lottie doesn't have claws. :o

How would you ever get a cat to go on cue? :o

I can hit a cup, does that score any points?

As for toliet training, I had two sons, but I used one of my old dolls that you could feed water and she would wet. I demonstrated how she could do it, and had them (sort of) emulate her! But it would be even better for a little girl.

I do hope Lottie is resting and feeling much better now and back to herself.

Maybe her system was too acidic, or she wasn't drinking enough water. I had a sister-in-law whose very young daughter had an impacted bowel system, and that's kind of rare too, in a child.

(((Clare))) and (((Charolette)))) So glad your Home with Mommy! It's so hard to see your children suffering from pain, especially when their so little and don't understand. Glad she's home.

On peeing in a cup, our dr. has a thing that fits on the toilet, and you just pee and pour it into the cup. No cups of pee falling into the toilet! lol
