Well, pretty self-explanatory - this is the place for you to make your album recommendations. The albums can be famous or obscure; they can be new or they can be old; they can be rock or pop or folk or jazz or classical; they can be albums that you loved and want to see get greater exposure, or they can be albums you were disappointed with that you want to warn people about. It's up to you. :)

I'll start...

ROY ORBISON - MYSTERY GIRL (1989)

Combining the best elements of 60s and 80s pop/rock, Roy Orbison's MYSTERY GIRL managed to recapture the sound and spirit of Roy's 60s work while remaning fresh and modern. Aided and abetted by the likes of Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, T-Bone Burnett, Bono, and Elvis Costello, the album features Roy at his finest, both as a songwriter and as a singer. His voice had lost none of its soaring range and power since his early days, as evidenced by his absolutely breathtaking lead on perhaps the album's finest cut (penned by U2's Bono and The Edge), She's a Mystery to Me. However, the entire disc is a joy and pleasure, and released in the days directly following his untimely death, it stands as a perfect example of what we lost in Roy Orbison.

Of all the albums I've heard in my life, 'Breakfast in America' (released in 1979), by Supertramp is one of the few I (still) consider great. It just is. If you haven't heard it, you've missed a great pop experience (no kiddin'). I remember McCartney saying 'The Logical Song' (the first single) was his favorite song that year (and for good reason). The entire album was brilliant. As a matter of fact (my fact, of course), 'The Logical Song' was probably the worst song on the album. This should say it all.

Released in 1977, 'Pacific Ocean Blue', by Dennis Wilson (Brian Wilson's late brother) is a masterpiece. Trust me. "Oh, mighty river, I would love to be like you... ." and "Who made my moonshine intoxicating me?" -Trust me.

I had a feeling you dug Supertramp - sort of a Steely Dan-type aura about 'em, no? ;) ^_^ I've got GREATEST HITS, which was great, and I've seen BREAKFAST IN AMERICA cheap at my local Borders; I'll have to pick it up. B)

Yeah, I've heard Firth of Fifth and I Know What I Like before, and they sounded really great, I've actually had this album on my "to-get list" for a while now. I'm digging both the Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins incarnations of Genesis - this band may end up with quite a few albums in my collection. :)

No, I would say more of a 'Beatles '67' aura. I'm not a mad Supertramp fan, but I am of this particular album. Pre/proceeding this, they were sporatic in quality of output. It's kinda sad, but I suppose some just have one great album in them, and this was it, imo. 'Famous Last Words' was also great, but not as great.

There's definitely a Beatlesesque quality in there, but I thought Supertramp sounded a little Steely Dan-ish, in the polish and the tight, sophisticated pop structuring. What did you think of CRIME OF THE CENTURY? I've heard that's really good.

No, I don't hear SD at all. As for 'Crime...', I wasn't impressed. It was too catchy without anything to stir the soul. 'That's right, you bloody hell right", etc. But, if I remember correctly, this was 1974, and I was listening to "Band on the Run'. So, perhaps, my objectivity for other music wasn't working too well that year (I'm sure you understand). :P

"3:47 EST", by Klaatu.

Somewhere between 1975 and '79, I heard a song on the radio. I thought Lennon had come out of retirement because it sounded exactly (and I do mean "exactly!") like John Lennon's voice and a great new Lennon song and I loved it. I wanted to hear it again very badly. Well, come to find out, it was a band called "Klaatu", and the song was called, "Sub-Rosa Subway". I didn't know whether or not the other songs on this album would knock me out, but I knew I had to have this song. So, I bought the album. It had three great songs on it, two sounded exactly like Lennon (Sub- Rosa Subway; Calling Occupants...) and a very McCartney sounding song "California Jam. The rest of the songs were weak, but for the two Lennon sounding songs alone, I'm glad I've got it. Every Beatles fan should hear these two songs at least once. Sub-Rosa Subway is unbelievable. At the time, people were convinced the Beatles had reunited as "klaatu". I was almost convinced. Anyway, that's my story.

I've read about that: "Is Klaatu really the Beatles?" And Capitol would "neither confirm nor deny" the rumours. A clever marketing ploy if I ever heard one. However, if it sounded enough like the Beatles to warrant such hype, it may be worth looking into. B)

Here's the MP3 of Sub-Rosa Subway. Click Here and see what you think. Listening to it now, it sounds more like a McCartney song. And, the vocals sound more like a cross between lennon and McCartney than totally Lennon, though at times I could swear it was John singing. Either way, a very Beatles sound. See what you think.
