Please learn to speak it. No, this has nothing to do with the immigration debate. My suggestion is aimed at those who already think they know the language. Especially news copy-writers. Now I know that English is a living, growing and evolving language. I want it to continue to evolve and not devolve. To achieve this, here are some things to look out for: It is NOT big or clever to add syllables to words. No-one becomes “disorientated,” - they become disoriented. Do not mix your expressions. Witnesses do not “watch on.” They watch or they look on. Choose one or the other. Don't waste time with superfluous adjectives. For instance: “innocent victims.” When is a victim not innocent? Innocence is already implied in the word “victim.” Don't pick up on the latest expression without knowing what it means or where it came from. Peace does not break out. War breaks out. Peace is different. The expression, “if peace breaks out,” was first used in 1991 as a joke about the first gulf war. A few weeks later, it was being used in news reports, devoid of the original irony. By following these rules, you will probably have some space to fill in the copy. You can fill them with verbs. Every sentence needs one. Stop speaking in headlines. Yes Channel 10, I am looking at you! |

Hooray for Bill!! My least favorite is one my brother uses, he says, "Irregardless". Isn't that a double negative? Regardless means without regard, the last time I checked. Drives me crazy when he says it, because he thinks that he knows so much more than the rest of us. Just shows he never paid attention in English class!! |

HAHAHA! That was the first one that came to mind with me, too!! My brother-in-law is an executive with Humana and he uses it all the time! It makes me crazy! What do other executives think when he uses it? But the butchering of the English language is a HUGE pet-peeve of mine! I drive my wife crazy correcting her. She says, "Give me it!" all the time! It makes me want to go nucular on someone!

Bill, Could you give us a language class weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly? One is never too old to learn something new. Could you start with the simple words, to and too and when they are used? Then we could move on to *anything* verses *nothing.* I here and see these words used in the wrong context often. (Hope I got that right) Judy |

Bill, as you know I am a copyeditor, and I too loathe the misuse of the English language. I totally understand if English is not your mother tongue, but how can we expect people to learn the language when not even the native speakers can use it properly?? My biggest peeves are "their", they're" and "there", and I hate it when someone writes that they "loose" something. The word is "LOSE"!!! |

Bill, you are my hero. I am not a native speaker but I love the english language and I hate to see mistakes that even I would not make. If I can spend my time trying to master this language, surely those journalists could do so as well? (I also like to be corrected when I am wrong, so please do so if you see anything wrong in my posts, I will not be offended.) This happens everywhere, though; god knows how horrible the journalists' greek is over here. |

How about "your" and "you're"? Or "their" and "there". My sister in law who thinks she's intelligent gets those mixed up all the time. I saw something she wrote in a patient report once and it read, "To the oncoming nurse: Mr. Smith has a lab test ordered for tomorrow. He has to be their at 8AM. He knows not to eat or drink after midnight. I had a bad day today, so your probably going to have a bad night." That kind of stuff makes me cringe. |

Good thread Bill .... I will get back to it when I can ... I have seen the language trashed by ignorance .... laziness ... and being sloppy with it .. (I have butchered it in humorous ways ... and on purpose... emails and these postings have created a few bad habits in me .... the mistakes I catch ... seem so obvious ... but I guess they are not to the writer) In meetings at work ... projected on the screen for all to see ... are spelling mistakes ...and grammer mistakes ... from those who have mega degrees .... and should know better ... (many don't proof read or get a fresh set of eyes to read it) spell checker does not catch words that may be spelled right ... if they were used right ... their, there, they're, too, two, to, break, brake etc.... my example today will be: I could care less or I couldn't care less (of course I am not going to give the correct one to you  ) |

One pet peeve I have are those online who think it's so great to correct other's grammar and spelling. I just think it's rude. But that's my opinion. One thing that grets me are people who keep saying, "You know what I mean." after ever sentence when they talk. I want to say, "No, I don't know what you mean." |

The former is mostly an American thing but the problem is that it means the opposite of what people are using it to say. Both expressions are used to say "I don't care," but only one of them means that. I could care less about you people. That's because I care a lot. That means I could care less. See? Whereas if I really really DON'T care about something, then I could not care less.

Folks, I'm informed by one of my favourite people that the expression predates the gulf war and was used as a book title much earlier. My apologies. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/055327574...glance&n=283155 However, I stand by my statement that reporters should not use the expression to describe the coming of peace, expected or not.

It makes me wonder if people don't care about it just because it's online that they are doing this or do they speak and write this way in their "real life" too? It seems like the younger generation, who have been online since a younger age than most of us baby boomers have been, are guilty of this the most. Some don't bother with punctuation very often and some don't ever use capital letters. There are so many abbreviations used, I don't have a clue what so many of them are, what's that all about? Are they in that much of a hurry that they can't even type out a few words? I guess that's because of all the instant messaging and text messaging, so much typing that there's no time to type the actual words. Another annoying thing is the people that can't type a complete sentence, but they type in phrases..... with those annoying dots........all over the place..... between their thoughts......I think that might just be the most annoying thing that I've seen!! I would never correct someone's use of words or spelling online, but I do get tired of seeing so much of it online. |

We all use bad expression sometimes. We might be doing it to make a point, or it might just be our natural expression. I think the important thing is to know what is correct and what is incorrect. I don't think any of us are so snobbish as to think less of someone for just speaking naturally. It's the ones who simply don't know poor expression when the see it who are.... like, OMG, I just SO hate that! |

Our eyes only pick out letters they deem "important". You can omit most vowels and some consonants from words and the brain may not even miss them. Truth is, even when words are spelled out correctly our brain still only looks for familiar symbols to read the words. Trippy, huh! |

I think it can be quite unfair when this happens as well. However, I'm positive that, in Bill's opening post, he was criticising people such as journos and professional writers who should know better, not people who post on message boards and have varying degrees of intelligence, education & grasp of the English language for whatever reason.

Oh that IS bad! I actually see it the same way Nancy, so I go to great pains to make sure I seperate the two! Where I work on the weekends the restaurant nearby has a few Hispanic men working as dishwashers. Now they seem like nice people and they greet me as they go past, but if I say anything much beyond "Hello!" or "Hi!, they are totally lost. I know they can't speak English and wonder how they make it anywhere that way. They usually stick together and talk Spanish between themselves. I heard recently that they want to make English the "Official Language" of this state, when I already thought it was, anyway! Up until about five years ago we didn't have Hispanic people here, very few, but we DO have many Middle-Easterners and Eastern Indians. Maybe that's why they want to impliment the "official" business. Merry

See now, I never realized that, Chad! I just thought that the majority spoke English and it was a given. I guess if you think about it though, it's logical. When the Founding Fathers came here there were still occupied areas of the country and that included the French and Spanish. So maybe it just hadn't been done "formally", but over time English just seemed to be the predominating lanuguage. My maternal great-grandparents immigrated here from France, settling first in Canada and when they came to Michigan they were still a French speaking family. My grandmother learned English and was actually ashamed of her native tongue and refused to speak it once she got here. Merry

She didn't need to be ashamed of speaking French, but what your grandmother did is called assimilating. For some reason, people don't want to do that any more! And it drives me nuts. If I emigrated to the UK, I wouldn't refuse to sing their National Anthem and I wouldn't belly-ache about the Union Jack and fly my country's flag above it! If I moved permanently to Holland, I'd learn Dutch and not demand English be placed on all the signs over there! Sorry, but that's a bit of a peeve of mine, guys! |

My Grandfather came to Canada, & he quickly stopped speaking Danish because he said that he was Canadian now, & he wanted to speak English. You're right, people want to keep their own culture, which is fine, but at least TRY to learn the new language, & customs. What I hate is people you know can speak English, but chose to speak in their native tongue in public so others can't understand them. That's just RUDE! I hate how we must now wish everyone "Season's Greetings" instead of "Merry Christmas", because they MIGHT get offended. What if I'm offended that I can't say it in my own country? Sorry, got off on a rant there. Thanks for letting me! |

Bill, cool thread. Claire I didn't know you were a copy editor, so I am! Small world. There are many things I don't like, but if I go on too much it sounds like so much fussiness. One thing that journalists are famous for, use of "impact" as a verb. No, it is not a verb, as "the war has impacted us all" but rather, a noun, as in "the impact of the war has been felt by all." It is hard for me to see "awhile" as one word, since it is actually two. I also have a really hard time with people's confusion with capitalization, as in "My favorite subjects are Art, History and Science." No caps there folks. In speaking and writing, cliches are disturbing to me...as in "been there, done that." And I can't stand the use of "back in the day." What really is that supposed to mean? Usually people who use it are reaching, trying hard to sound hip. It is repeated so often it becomes ridiculous. Much like the government/business cliches I heard constantly when I was a reporter: "when the rubber meets the road," "thinking outside the box," and "at the end of the day, what will it matter?" I have to stop before I become verklempt. |

I don't get your point. I though this thread was about grammatical and spelling errors that are not understandable (sorry, don't remember the exact word for that).... It's not because of learning problems like you. It's because they don't care. People make mistakes even with the simplest rules. For example, in spanish_ Every word ending with CIÓN goes with a C: e.g. Canción, atención. I saw things like: cansión, atensión. Awful! |

Agreed Bill and Peter. I don't mean to pick on anyone who is making any honest error, or who is trying hard, or who is speaking English as a second language, which is admirable. It is amazingly hard to communicate well in another language that isn't native to you. Also Dorothy I admire you and everything that you do, as writing and typing is very difficult for everyone and many, many people never even try. The people I have a bone to pick with are those that should know better but don't bother, and those who are being pretentious. Bleh. |

Oh, I didn't see this post, so ignore my Python one (Sorry Bill!!!)Back on the given topic, I'm a bit of a grammar junkie. It drives me bonkers when people mispell the same words repeatedy. I was im'ing a friend, and she wrote "werid" instead of "wierd". I started to prod and poke fun at her a bit, and it took her a good twenty minutes to realise what she'd done wrong! I also despise acronyms. I can live with "lol" I suppose, but all this "ROFLMFAO" buissness (I almost wrote "buissmess" ) urks me. My favorite misuses of the American language are things like "Her and me". I always want to say "It's I!" OH! Ever noticed how people say "like" every three words??? I can't stand it. It's even worse when they write like that, too I get all this grammar-loving from my mom, and my dad is the exact opposite (he spells "dishes" like "dishis" :hmm:
)Ta! |

Sing the Changes
|
The young woman I work with is always asking me to read over something she has written. She writes these incredibly long run-on sentences, all in one paragraph and with no punctuation except for period at the end of the sentence. She really has no idea when I tell her she needs a comma here and it would be best to start a new paragraph here. And she's a college graduate. She speaks the same way. |

That would be the English language. In a forum like this I think the main thing is getting the message across and some mistakes are ok. If I was delivering my CV or an essay I would try to ensure the grammar is correct. |

Sometimes "her and me" make no grammatical sense, as in, "Her and me went to the store". It doesn't work if you pull "her" out. Then it's "Me went to the store". And of course, that's improper, and "her and I" would be correct. But you can use "her and me" for a scenario where "me" works by itself, as in "He gave the gift to (her and) me. |

Either is correct by my guess - although I suspect it's an exaggeration.
There's only a problem when there's a double negative like "I didn't do nothing." It's either, "I did nothing," or "I didn't do anything." |
