A perfectly normal day, this was. Let's see: - Portugal beats England in the penalties, which is becoming boring (thanks, Ricardo, you're great and will always have a special place in my heart )- England supporters blaim the referee. - When a guy is kicked in his balls, it hurts! Then the guy who kicked him goes out. Everything is normal in football land. And now, France, what do you prefer: Croissant or Champagne? |

Sorry, man, I have to comment this. "The better team doesn't always win" - Of course not! In Portugal we are aware of that since the semi-final with England in 1966 World Cup. "Cheats do prosper" - I don't see where that comment fits regarding the game today! "There's no such thing as Karma in football" - Tell that to Ricardo.

As for the 'cheats do prosper' comment - I'm talking about the amount of 'play acting'... the Portuguese players going down like a sack of potatoes when the England players hardly touched them - one even clutching his face when nothing happening to his face (a la Rivaldo, but not as blatant). I'm talking about Portuguese players going down "injured" when England were breaking and then remonstrating with the England players and the ref when they didn't instantly kick the ball out. I'm talking about Ronaldo winding Rooney up just before kick-off and then running over to the ref in the Rooney incident in order to get him sent off and then winking to his team-mates afterwards. That's what I call cheating - and he certainly prospered. The Portuguese team didn't deserve to win and they certainly didn't play fair. It was very poor sportsmanship indeed - if that's the way the team wants to win and conducts itself on the pitch, then I would feel ashamed to be a Portugal supporter. Then again, they made their intentions quite clear in the second round, didn't they? Ricardo did well saving those penalties - all due praise to him... but I still haven't forgiven him for his smug antics in Euro 2004. If Karma existed, he'd have failed to stop every single one of those shots.

Beatle that was a load of bollocks read here read at macca about what i said about the referee. England were poor, Portugal were pathetic. Ronaldo should have been sent off before a kick had been taken. Figo should have been sent off against Holland how many were sent off against the Dutch. The French will murder you. Oh yes 1966 the venue was moved from Anfield to Wembley WHY MONEY, it's FIFA. You would have been beaten 4-0 in the north coz the southerners can't sing. Me if someone dives and rolls around on me then I kick them and that goes for Krokamp too. |

No one was kicked in the balls. If you saw the game you probably saw that it was an accident, as Rooney fell over and stepped on him becase, well, he was there. The ref whistled a foul but decided to send him off after there had been complaints from both sides. That was not a violation deserving a red card. Sorry. I agree with Andy with the rest. Too much play acting going on, and that is despicable. Is that what professional players are supposed to do? The thing is that so many players do it and the referees can't always tell. As for the penalties, the English were just worn out. If not even Gerrard can score then you can begin to understand the level of tiredness. Yes, both teams played for the same amount of time, but the English were down to 10 and some players have had very rough seasons. Or it's just bad luck haunting the English and causing them to get disqualified every bloody time. Who knows. |

I agree with your entire comment, Andy. Sadly, the 'face' incident that you mentioned (quoted above) was actually praised as a good move by the U.S. commentators. I was embarrased listening to them. They thought it a smart ploy on Portugal's part. Having had the opportunity to be in England a few weeks ago, I realize how much better the commentary should be. The Americans seem to be looking for the big, bold, brazen move that brings out the blood, whereas the English were more interested in commentating on the beauty of the game. I understand why there is an 'ugly American' stereotype. There was a commercial series I saw in England (by Budweiser) which mocked U.S. commentators and ended with the tag line "You do the football, we'll do the beer," or something like that. I'm sad to say that it rings very true. |

I think it was the push on him rather than the tackle that sent him off
wish I could be at Utd's first training day at Carrington like I have said before - wonder if he will be allowed back into Manchester after that  does anyone know if any player as scored a penatly to knock england (or another UK team) out of a tournament and got a good response by fans the following season ??? |

Well, since a lot of people are so shocked that seem to have already forgotten what REALLY happened, I'm posting this link to this video for you all to review it. There already are hundreds of videos like this all over the net, but I chose one spoken in an oriental language - maybe Japanese, I don't know - on purpose. You can't understand what they say, their voice tonality and vocal expressions are enough to understand what they think about it. http://youtube.com/watch?v=WcWksCC4EBo&sea...oney%20portugal Now, about that comment on feeling ashamed to be a Portugal supporter. I would only feel ashamed of being a Portugal supporter if Portugal supporters didn't know how to lose a match as, apparently, SOME England supporters are not showing being capable of. But, football history in the last decades has taught me that many, many times, so it's no surprise. Also, I'd like to note that Portugal is the only national team of the four which has never been a World Cup winner and is the one with less resources. Portuguese team have players in major clubs of all the other 3 countries and no player of the other 3 countries plays in portuguese teams. So, to what I'm concerned, Portugal has come much further than I would expect it to. The same way England hasn't won a match with Portugal since 1966, we haven't won a match with France in decades as well. Therefore, if Portugal loses I assure you I won't blame the ref or Zidane! C'est la vie! |

Forget the Portugeuse game, England did NOTHING to suggest they could win the World Cup. They struggled the whole tournament. And you want to know why? because the vast majoity of the players are technically inept. Sure, the team is littered with big names, but most of the teams they faced - and I include Ecuador - were technically superior. They passed the ball better, they were quicker in thought and skill - and that's were England still come up short. England is a team full of POWERFUL players. They do not have one single football genius Beckham aint one, he's only dangerous at set pieces. Gerrard aint one, a hard worker if nothing else. Lampard simply can't hack it at this level. Cole? far too inconsistent and lightweight. Rooney aint one, he's just a powerhouse too easy to wind up and I doubt he'll ever have the savvy to play at that level. The English media hype these players as world class. They're not. And time and time again at major championsips this is shown to be true. |

...and being Scottish, you have no bias at all. Sorry Eric, but that's tosh (with the exception of your first two lines, which are about right). These are players who are stars for some of Europe's top clubs... they don't get to play for the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea, Man Utd, Real Madrid & Bayern Munich by being technically inept.
I think the manager failed to get the best out of the players available - and the players available largely failed to recapture their best form. |

Yes, and do you know why? You obviously don't know the history between Britain and Argentina, that fact that the two countries went to war over the Falkland Islands, and the fact that Britain whipped Argentina's a*se, and the fact that all Argentineans have been bitter ever since. So it stands to reason a very bitter Argentinean referee is going to favour Portugal  . |

Andy, you can turn this into a Scotland v England issue if you wish but the facts are England have no flair, no fluency, little technical ability. Ecuador played better football than England and should have put them out. In fact, Trinidad and Tobago were easier on the eye than England. Sure the English have very talented individuals but my point is that the English media and it seems the English public think they are far better than they actually are. Players like Gerrard, Lampard, Beckham etc are very good players but at their respective clubs they play with very talented foreign players who have excellent technical ability. It always speaks volumes to me that very few English players play abroad in the technically better, but admittedly less exciting European leagues. I have never considered Beckham world class,. Sure he is probably the best at set pieces in the world - but an all-round world class player? forget it. |

I was just teasing about the English/Scottish thing, but I'm sure you'll agree that most Scottish football supporters don't exactly wish England well.
I think Beckham justifies his selection in the England and Real Madrid team... although perhaps a more balanced manager would have dropped him when he wasn't fit enough, but oh-no, not Svenn. Not everyone can be Zidane, or Ronaldinho (who had a very ordinary world cup, IMO), but I think he's up there with Figo or Luis Enrique as a moderately complete midfielder with one or two minor weaknesses. I think it's unfair to label Beckham as just a free-kick specialist and this he's improved his gameplay since he left Manchester Utd. Our real problem was a lack of attacking options because of Svenn's bizarre squad selection... but we can analyse all we like - we're out now and we have to look to the future.

Out on her Royal Yacht (borrowed for the occasion) The Queen was enjoying the sea air when she spied a man in the water off the port bow - clearly being menaced by a very large shark. Through her binoculars she could see it was Christian Ronaldo, struggling frantically to free himself from the jaws of a 20 foot shark! Her Maj ordered the captain to change course to try and save the poor man, but she knew the yacht's top speed would never get them there in time. At that exact moment a speedboat containing three men wearing white tops sped into view. One of the men took aim at the shark and fired a harpoon into its ribs, immobilising it instantly. The other two reached out and pulled Ronaldo from the water and, using long clubs, beat the shark to death. They bundled the bleeding, semi-conscious Ronaldo into the speedboat along with the dead shark and prepared for a hasty retreat, when they heard frantic calling ...... It was the Queen calling them to the yacht. When they reached it, the Queen went into raptures about the rescue and said, "I'll give you a knighthood for your brave actions. I thought the England team would hate Ronaldo after the World Cup. But I see that the England team are true heroes and should serve as a model for sportsmanship to other countries." She knighted them and sailed away. As she departed Rooney asked the others, "Who was that?" "That," Beckham answered, "was our Queen. She rules the Commonwealth and knows everything about our country." "Well," Rooney replied, "she knows F*** all about shark fishing. How's the bait holding up?" |

like I have said before - wonder if he will be allowed back into Manchester after that
Sorry Eric, but that's tosh (with the exception of your first two lines, which are about right). These are players who are stars for some of Europe's top clubs... they don't get to play for the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea, Man Utd, Real Madrid & Bayern Munich by being technically inept.

or did you on the sly
