This is the official Strawberry Fields World Cup thread!

Naturally I'm rooting for England and, with or without Rooney, I think we've got a very good chance of going very far in this competition. Brazil are the favourites, but every dog can have it's day and each competition brings it's own shocks and surprises!

When the competition starts on June 9th, we can start predicting the outcome of matches but, before then, a few questions to get this thread rolling!

1. Will you be watching the World Cup?

2. Which team will you be supporting?

3. Who do you think will win?

:D
...and in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

I will be keeping an eye on it.As Scotland arent in it (again) I wont be fully committed

2. Which team will you be supporting?
Come on Sweden :D Cant be seen to be supporting the auld enemy

3. Who do you think will win?
I'm not sure, but I'm going to go for a suprise victory for Ivory Coast
nah Germany maybe as they are on home turf or Brazil.
England I think always have a chance. With some of the players they have they should do better than what they do,but we'll see

I'm a BIGGER Beatles fan than you and I'm an even BIGGER Wings fan than that...
'You're a Paul McCartney fan? No you're a Wings fan'. 'Thankyou Scotland' Ho Hey Ho...

1. Will you be watching the World Cup?

Yes, even though it's on at some ungodly hour here. 4am? Who are you kidding?

2. Which team will you be supporting?

Australia - the first appearance by us in how long?

3. Who do you think will win?

Not us. We have Brazil in the first game.

Ah, thanks Andy! The entire sporting population of Australia went nuts when we qualified. I hope we don't get too badly whitewashed! (We still have horrible memories of Johnny Wilkinson in another code!!)

I can't see you performing too badly - you have a handful of really top players;

Australian World Cup Squad

Goalkeepers: Mark Schwarzer (Middlesbrough), Zeljko Kalac (AC Milan), Ante Covic (Hammarby)

Defenders: Michael Beauchamp (Central Coast), Craig Moore (Newcastle United), Lucas Neill (Blackburn Rovers), Tony Popovic (Crystal Palace), Mark Milligan (Sydney FC)

Midfielders: Marco Bresciano (Parma), Tim Cahill (Everton), Scott Chipperfield (Basel), Jason Culina (PSV Eindhoven), Brett Emerton (Blackburn Rovers), Vince Grella (Parma), Stan Lazaridis (Unattached), Josip Skoko (Wigan Athletic), Mile Sterjovski (Basel), Luke Wilkshire (Bristol City)

Strikers: John Aloisi (CD Alaves), Harry Kewell (Liverpool), Archie Thompson (PSV Eindhoven), Mark Viduka (Middlesbrough), Josh Kennedy (Dinamo Dreseden)

OK, it may not look like a squad of world-beaters, but if Greece can win Euro 2004, it shows that anyone has a chance - there are players in the Aussie squad who can win games on their own - Kewell & Cahill especially. Of course, not forgetting the mightly John Aloisi - an ex-Coventry City player! ^_^
...and in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

1. Will you be watching the World Cup?

The big games - YES. The rest - wait and see. Although the world cup is in my country I am not very happy with that. There are so many stupid things that happen around the cup: Why don't we have a GERMAN Cup Song- (I don't talk about the lyrics, I'm talking of the group)? WHY this stupid way of selling the tickets ? WHY this high prices for a ticket?
My husband will see nearly all games - he sells TV-Sets and he can watch during his worktime!

2. Which team will you be supporting?
GERMANY of course. But I think we won't get so far. As Scotland aren't in it I think I will support England than - my sister-in-law lives there, so what?!

3. Who do you think will win?
Brazil

1. Will you be watching the World Cup?

As much of it as I can!

2. Which team will you be supporting?

England - closely followed by the U.S.A. and Australia

3. Who do you think will win?

I believe that England have a very good chance this year, but Brazil, Holland and Italy have very strong teams. Nobody should discount Germany either - the fact that they're unfancied can sometimes be an advantage and everyone knows what playing on 'home soil' can do for a team.

I'm defintely looking forward to it! :D

2. Which team will you be supporting?
England as far as they go (I hope they go far). Second Holland as Im half Dutch.

3. Who do you think will win?
I have no idea, Im sure a South American team will do well.

1. Will you be watching the World Cup?
Hell yeah! Soccer is a sport sadly neglected in the U.S., and the world cup is the best opportunity to see soccer at its finest. (Unfortunately due to terrible T.V. coverage most of the games will probably be aired at midnight....)

2. Which team will you be supporting?
England, since Ireland didn't make it this year.

3. Who do you think will win?

I honestly have no idea.

The World Cup starts today! :D

What I now want are your predictions for the first two games;

Germany v Costa Rica

and

Poland v Ecuador

If you correctly guess the correct score, you will get three points. If you correctly guess the outcome without getting the score spot on then you get one point.

i.e. If you said 'Germany 3 Costa Rica 3' and that was the exact score, then you get three points. However, if it was 3-3 and you guessed 1-1 then you'd receive a point, because you guessed correctly that the match was going to end in a draw.

Everyone ready? Let the fun begin! :D

My predictions for the first matches;

Germany 2 - 1 Costa Rica

Poland 3 - 1 Ecuador
...and in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

Yes, they have a decent team and people tend to under-rate the US in football. I think they've got a fairly decent chance of getting to at least the Semi-Finals. :)

They have a good team, but it's a difficult group with Italy and the Czech Republic. But if the go through to the knock out stage, anything can happen.

Well, the US aren't 5th in the FIFA world rankings by being easy to beat! They do, traditionally, have easier opposition than most European teams in group stages, so perhaps the ranking isn't representative of their abilty, but they've got a team full of top-class professionals, so I wouldn't bet against them getting through that group. ^_^

WooHoo!! Top of the leaderboard! Thanks, everyone!

England 2 v Paraguay 3

Trinidad and Tobago 0 vs Sweden 2

Argentina 4 vs Ivory Coast 1

Yes, I know I'm going against the grain by scoring Paraguay over England, but hey, Ecuador beat Poland, so anything is possible.
I don't believe in Bondi. I don't believe in rugby league. I believe in Yoko, John Lennon, the Lost Weekend and me.

Hey all of you footballers out there....does the U.S. stand a chance?

Ranked #5 in the world. I'd say we've got a decent shot. But actually, I'm pulling for the Three Lions!

True, but Italy was a little nervous about having drawn them!

England was boring :(

What was up with those ref's??? :realmad:

Horrible officiating, just horrible! Unless you're a Paraguay fan! But in the end 1 - nil was enough!

Many referees are disgraceful. I think they should be punished. I hope England's game gets better and less defensive in the next games. Let's have it the Premiership way, baby! :P

Thanks, Chad! Here's mine...

Australia 1 - 1 Japan
United States 1 - 2 Czech Republic
Italy 3 - 1 Ghana

I want the U.S. to win, but the Czechs have a very strong team. They're not 2nd in the world for nothing! ;)

I know, but it's more wishful thinking than anything else.

It's sort of like writing down your goal on a piece of paper. If it's in writing, it seems "real"!
