This came all in a single rush a couple days ago, I was surprised at how fast actually. I may expand it, but it could work pretty well as it stands. More or less traditional blues in structure, though not, I daresay, in subject matter. Keep in mind this is written with tongue planted firmly in cheek. ;)

MESSIANIC BLUES

Chorus:
Whoa momma
I got them Messianic Blues
They all tellin’ me
I’m the King of the Jews
You can’t know how I feel
Till you’ve walked on water in my shoes

Jerusalem
You’re gettin’ me down
You made me a King
And gave me a thorny crown
I gotta quit you
Gotta get me outta this town

They call me a god
That wasn’t my intent
I told them what was goin’ down
But they didn’t see what I meant
Oh, well I guess I oughtta
Take it as a compliment

We’re at dinner
They drinkin’ my wine
They eatin’ my bread
And say it’s stuff divine
They can have their blood and body
I like my bread and wine just fine

Chorus

The Pilate’s a-comin’
Gonna throw me off his plane
The engineer’s a-comin’
Gonna drop me off his train
I only wish they’d gimme
One last chance to explain

I been betrayed
And my followers all grieve
I’m sorry guys
You know I’m not one to deceive
But I can’t hang around this place
You know I gotta leave

Chorus

Lookin’ down the years
Man, they’ve torn me apart
Now I’m everywhere
The churches and the streets and Wal-Mart
Oh my God
What on earth did I start?

Chorus

A simple little pop-rock song. Nothing too complex, but I like it anyway. ^_^

REVEAL YOUR LOVE

You say that you got hurt before
You don’t want to take it anymore
I can understand that your heart is grieving
But no matter what you say about it
You could never go without it
In spite of your pain you’ve gotta keep believing

I know how you feel
But someday soon you will
Reveal your love

You’re just protecting yourself
I can sympathize
Watching the world go by
Through jaded eyes
But I know that on the inside
You aren’t so cold
I know beneath the surface
Beats a heart of gold

You tell me that he was the only one
And since he left you won’t let anyone
Get close to you, you push them all away
But from the very moment I met you
You know I’ve always felt the way I do
And I’m ready to help if you give me the OK

I know how you feel
But I’m willing to do whatever it takes to
Reveal your love

I tossed this one off way too easily, which is interesting as it's probably my most personal, forthright lyric to date. I've felt this way about my Hilary for a while now, but recently it's like I'm falling in love with her all over again, and I've made a vow to make the most of this (admittedly complex) relationship. The song speaks for itself, I think. :)

(The JFK Rose - her favourite flower.)

A SONG FOR HILARY

Hilary, you know I’ve loved you
Since the day we met
I’ll never understand it all
But I’ll never forget

Hilary, everything you mean to me
Is more than I can say
But I’m gonna let you know
Everyday in every way

Chorus:
Hilary, you’re killing me
With a glance and your soft summer smile
Throwing me off my stride
With your stance and your offhanded style
I can’t see straight when you’re in view
But if I have to walk blind
I’m gonna make you mine

I know you’ll be happy with him
And your happiness is all I want to see
But give me a chance
And I’ll show you
How happy you could be with me

Hilary, everything I do I do for you
You’re my only goal
Whenever we’re not together
I can feel the emptiness in my soul

Chorus

You can’t hurry love
Romance never grew from haste
But when I see you
I know too well
There’s no time, no time to waste, no

Hilary, I spent too long in hesitation
And missed my shot
But I refuse to give up on you
I’m gonna give you everything I’ve got

Chorus

Sorry, it wasn't meant to be a backhanded compliment - you're already at the standard of most rock 'n' roll lyricists, but some achieve special status such as Dylan, Lennon, Costello, Springsteen, Joel... I'd say you're not quite there, but there's no reason why you couldn't be. ^_^

No, no, I understood the compliment, and thank you! ^_^ ^_^ I have no delusions of being anywhere near as good as someone like Bob Dylan or Billy Joel, and don't honestly believe I ever could be. But thanks anyway. ;) :)

Great Lyrics. Lyrics have always been the hardest bit for me writing a song - melodies usually come easily, but lyrics - not so easily. But well done, son :D
I wished I could save her in some sort of time machine.

It's the other way round for me. Lyrics are easy, I've always been something of a writer anyway. I'm very melodic too, I love a good tune and can easily remember one - when I'm listening to a song, the melody is usually much more important than the words. But for some reason I have a hard time coming up with them myself. But that's what a songwriting partner is for, isn't it?

I have a very active imagination - overactive, sometimes - so I decided to write a song about the imagination and its power in our lives. It's also the afore-mentioned "companion song" to My Xanadu. :D

THE WORLD OF DREAMS

Posted Image

I’m stranded
Look behind and see our bridges burning
But I can bear it
If I can go inside my head
And watch a world of my creation turning

I face reality
With all its pain and isolation
But it’s not so bad
When I put my life aside
And swim the seas of my imagination

I close my eyes
And fly away
Escape into the world of dreams

When it’s all too much for me to take
I take sanctuary
In the green fields of my mind
Then I am free
I can see myself
And I see you there with me

Some look to the bottle
For solace, some to the bed
Others despair
But I can keep the flame
Of hope alive inside my head

I close my eyes
And fly away
Escape into the world of dreams

Many try to recreate
What has ceased be
Searching for the Straight Road
Endlessly
Never knowing what is real
And what is fantasy

They told me it was fantasy
But if I keep alive the memory
It’s real for me

I close my eyes
And fly away
Escape into the world of dreams

A spare, bitter acoustic folk number. Inspired by a listen to BLOOD ON THE TRACKS - not coincidentally, there's a Dylan allusion in here too ;).

SWITCHBLADE

Posted Image

Time heals all wounds
They say it’s true
But love can leave a scar
That no time can undo

A funhouse mirror
Showed where I didn’t want to be
You gave me that smile
And it was clear to me

You were out for a laugh
At my expense
Now you’ve had your fun
But it don’t make sense

You looked into my eyes
Like a corkscrew to my heart
The crooked path you led me down
Tore me apart

You looked into my eyes
Like a switchblade to my soul
But in spite of all my protests
You were in control

I’ve heard it said that love’s a game
You can’t play alone
The only problem’s the rules
Aren’t set in stone

You gave me your word
You said it was for my sake
I lived by your word
I can see that was my big mistake

So this is what you leave me
To remember you by
A handful of empty promises
A fistful of lies

I’ve seen you before
With a different face, a different name
I’ve seen your kind before
I don’t wanna see you again

You looked into my eyes
Burned me like a coal
As you twisted the knife
Like a switchblade to my soul

A recent breakup song - by which I don't mean a song about a recent breakup, but rather a recent song about a breakup. I've been on a roll for all sorts of songs lately, lyrics are just gushing out of me like water out of that hose you always seem to see when you really have to go to the bathroom but can't find one anywhere nearby. :P ;)

OUT OF MY LIFE

Whatever happened to us?
Everything seemed to be going so well
Can you put your finger on
The moment the axe fell?

I remember that night
On the surface things were calm as could be
I didn’t suspect a thing
The coast looked clear to me

Then you gave me the news
I never felt so weak
You walked right out that door
I was too stunned to speak

Chorus:
You’re out of my life
And I can’t believe it
I never thought I’d be alone again
You’ve taken my heart
And I can’t retrieve it
Won’t you please come home?

Even now I’m overwhelmed
I still can’t seem to digest
That you’re gone, for good it seems
Though I tried my best

I can’t understand it
Where did we go so wrong?
How could I let this happen
When my love was so strong?

Chorus

Take a look at me now
I never thought I could survive without you
How right I was

(Solo)

Chorus

This one is about the romantic frustration I've felt at times over the past six months or so. However, it isn't an exact representation of my emotions and experiences but rather a "creative magnification" - things were never this dire, and I've gotten over it. It's still not a bad song though. :)

PINS & NEEDLES (THE LAST TIME)

Posted Image

I try to make myself a part of your life
But it’s as if I’m not even there
It’s all I can do
To stay in love with you
When I look in your eyes and all I see
Is that thousand-yard stare

You make me feel two foot small
If I didn’t always make the first move
We wouldn’t move at all

I’m walking on pins and needles
You act as if my love is strange
Well, this is the last time
You’re gonna be so cruel
This is the last time
I’m gonna feel the fool
This is the last time
Something’s gotta change

(Instrumental Interlude)

Time after time I hope to catch your eye
But you never seem to hear my call
If I swore
I didn’t love you anymore
Would it make the slightest difference?
Would it affect you at all?

Why do I even bother trying
You can’t win with a losing hand
Can’t you see me crying?

I’m walking on pins and needles
A bolt of lightning to my brain
Well, this is the last time
You’re gonna be so cruel
This is the last time
I’m gonna feel the fool
This is the last time
I won’t be hurt again

I’m walking on pins and needles
Sometimes you don’t even know my name
Well, this is the last time
You’re gonna be so cruel
This is the last time
I’m gonna feel the fool
This is the last time
I’m tired of this game

This one was kind of written as a duet, but it could be done either solo or with a second voice. I'm thinking another verse might be in order, but I haven't come up with anything as of yet. Anyway, here it is. ^_^

THIS IS

Do you remember the time we first met?
I remember you didn’t fail to impress
And I remember I couldn’t seem to get a word out
I was just too amazed I guess
Now I’ve come to know you through the smooth and the rough
I was too amazed back then
But not nearly enough

Ours hasn’t always been the straightest road
We’ve had our doubts and our tight scrapes
We’ve had our fights and nights on the couch
We’ve had our narrow escapes
We’ve seen the wind and we’ve seen the rain
It’s been interesting to say the least
But I can’t complain

Chorus:
This is us
This is all we know
This is who we are
This is what we’ve got to show
This is life
This is how it goes
This is love
This is all we know

This is how it’s meant to be
Me for you and you for me
This is how it’s always been
And if I could go back I’d do the same thing again
This is how it’ll always stay
And I wouldn’t have it any other way

Chorus

(Instrumental)

Chorus

This one's kind of cool. I've got the music all worked out for it too and it's a big rock ballad, with some neat tempo, key, and time changes. At least I think so. :P You'll all hear it eventually - however, the band didn't get the equipment we planned on, so we've got to find something else now before we can make any demos. <_< Anyway...

RETURN TO YOU

Intro:
From that very day
You took my breath away
And showed me my life was worth living
When I was gone
Your memory lingered on
But the distance was so unforgiving

Now the time has come at last
I’ve waited so long and now
You’re here by my side
I’ll never know quite how

I survived all those days
All these nights spent alone
Whispering words of love
Into a telephone
No matter how I try I can’t
Make it on my own

And so I return to you
It feels so good to be home
Now I return to you

(Instrumental)

In my travels I’ve faced
Trials and tribulations
Been handed my share of
Unfulfilled expectations
Too long I’ve seen you only
In my imagination

And so I return to you
It feels so good to be home
Now I return to you
