Doctor Who 7:00pm - 7:45pm BBC1 Episode written by Mark Gatiss 7/13 - The Idiot's Lantern After the high excitement of the return-of-the-Cybermen two-parter, things calm down a little when the Doctor (David Tennant, with a very impressive 1950s hairdo) and Rose (Billie Piper) land in London in 1953 - coronation year. But there's something nasty lurking in the cathode tube. The plummy-voiced lady with the glacial smile on the television might look and sound like a BBC announcer, but actually she's the Wire, a sinister force that sucks the life from viewers. The Wire (Maureen Lipman - who'd have thought she'd be capable of such a spine-tingling, demonic laugh?) forces a shopkeeper to sell televisions to everyone, ready for the big day when an audience of millions clusters in their living rooms to watch the crowning. This means only one thing to the Wire - dinner. It's a typically making-the-normal weird story from Gatiss, a member of the League of Gentlemen, and it's good, black fun. The terrific life-or-death tussle atop Alexandra Palace transmitter in London is a real show-stopper. RT reviewer: Alison Graham The Doctor - David Tennant Rose Tyler - Billie Piper The Wire - Maureen Lipman Magpie - Ron Cook Eddie Connolly - Jamie Foreman Rita Connolly - Debra Gillett Tommy Connolly - Rory Jennings Grandma Connolly - Margaret John Bishop - Sam Cox Crabtree - Ieuan Rhys Aunty Betty - Jean Challis Security guard - Christopher Driscoll Mrs Gallagher - Marie Lewis http://www.radiotimes.com/ListingsServlet?...rog_details.jsp |

I liked this one. I also enjoyed The Confidential. Maureen Lipman was great. Whats this problem that may occur then later on? They mentioned this when discussing the very close bond between the Doctor and Rose. Billie looked great. David must have filmed The Chatterly Affair around that time too. When they mentioned the street parties my parents have photos of their Jubilee street party. (Before my time).

I thought that was very enjoyable. Chilling plot and Maureen Lipman was especially wonderful. I also really liked Rose this week, even though she wasn't in it very much. (I always correct people on the Union Flag/Jack thing too :D) Story sagged a little in the middle, but the climax was great, even if I'm still not quite sure exaclty how the Doctor saved the day using a Betamax!
Yes, there has been some mentions of "consequences" of the Doctor and Rose shooting about all over the place having fun. Sounds very ominous!

Ive just worked it out that the last episode I think will be the Saturday before your birthday. Then no more Doctor Who until Christmas. Oh well, I shouldn't complain as we do have 6 more episodes to go.
Will you be watching that again tonight? Again great music in Confidential. The BBC are always great at doing that.

Oh yes, so it is I might watch it again after some more revision! <_< Maybe with the website commentary on. It was cool to see that clip of David and Mark Gatiss in Randall & Hopkirk, cause I watched that series when it was on but obviously had no idea who David was then I guess that means that particular episode of Randall & Hopkirk featured 2 Doctors, because Tom Baker was also a regular in the series. Actually, Mark Gatiss has also played the Doctor in a few sketeches, so he counts aswell!

Sadly, I haven't gotten round to reading them yet I've bought them all, and read the first 9th Doctor one, but I haven't set aside any time to read the rest. A friend of mine tells me that they're pretty good. I bought the new 10th Doctor "quick read" the other day called "I Am A Dalek" so I should be able to read that in one go

Well I hope it continues to go well. This programme is making me want to put on The Beatles Anthology DVDs. Which one I dont know.
This programme is saying how many people watched 'All You Need Is Love', now that could have been a great theme for todays Doctor Who, if they chose not to focus on the coronation.
But then Im biased.

Thank you for that 'unrelated note.'
The last Mojo I bought was the one on The Who (I think I showed you that - I missed a train reading that). Really sad news about Indonesia, before the news was a football party where they were spending millions on luxuries and then a country declaring themselves in a state of emergency. Somehow this doesn't make sense.

Excellent, thanks for the link. Here's what it said about Peter: Peter Kay may have just appeared in the hit show Doctor Who as a baddie, but I hear that the Bolton-born comic is keen to land the role of the main man when David Tennant moves on. He told me: "I think the doctor should come from Bolton next time; he's always been a bit posh for me liking." Always been a bit posh? Peter obviously missed the Chris Eccleston era then! www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho has been updated - this Saturday's is set to be the scariest yet! I'll have to set my video though, as I'll be at the football

Doctor Who Adventures is nice, cause it's a much lighter read than DWM, cause it's for kids
Bought more stickers today (plus the ones in RT) and I now need about 50 to complete my album! I'm trying to get back into reading books so that I can start on the ninth and tenth Doc books. At the moment I'm reading Jules Verne - Around The World in Eighty Days, and really enjoying it. |

5 June 2006 EXCLUSIVE: BELLA IS BACK WITH THE DOC By Cameron Robertson VETERAN TV actress Bella Emberg is to appear on Doctor Who again after a gap of more than 30 years. The star, a one-time sidekick of telly legends Benny Hill and Russ Abbot, was last on the sci-fi show in 1973. She will play an elderly lady called Mrs Croot in an episode to be screened on BBC1 later this month. Bella 68, was in Doctor Who and the Silurians in 1970 and also in The Time Warrior three years later. She said: "Out of the three episodes of Doctor Who I've filmed, this is without a doubt my favourite. I absolutely loved it. But my ambition is to play a monster who defies the Doctor." Peter Kay, star of Phoenix Nights, will play a villain in the same episode, called Love and Monsters. http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/showbiz/tm_ob...-name_page.html |

I haven't noticed the shadow.
What I'm liking is that they are playing more like a team, as we have fantastic players but not always the best team players in my opinion - so keep going England!!

I wonder if Shakespeare will say "What the Dickens?" because Dickens said "What the Shakespeare?" in The Unquiet Dead! I've just remembered, Shakespeare briefly featured in the 1965 story "The Chase" (as well as a brief clip of the Beatles! :D). I wish I had a garden to go out and sit in! |

Yeah I'll be watching the highlights tonight if its not on too late. I think the best festival with a great line up this year has to be T in the Park. The Who, Franz Ferdinand, Kaisers and Hard Fi and many more including Red Hot Chilli Peppers (although Im not their biggest fan). Ill check out thaw website. Ive made many new friends at my new job and there is always 'Dr Who talk' on Monday sometimes it goes on throughout the week hehe. Filming end of July/beg August so thats not long now. I just found this old newspaper article, from when Jon Pertwee was cast as Doctor Who. - End of time for Dr. Who I'm glad they didn't decide to axe the series after Patrick Troughton left My first ever Doctor Who video that I got given was Jon Pertwee's first story (which was also the first one in colour, and the first one with the Autons!). |
