Every week I have to recharge the battery on my lawn tractor ('Yard Machines' brand). Also, I have to play with the gears sometimes in order for the gears to work. Why is that? I know it's probably not the greatest brand, but it's all I've got. It's a pretty good mower other than these two things. Can you help me beep beep? |

I AM THE BIGGEST JOHN FAN!
|
I have a friend who is having a difficult time getting grass to grow. We have a lot of clay in the soil. She has had topsoil put down. She has tried seeding and last year she put in 2,000 plugs. Everything has died. She is now thinking about doing sod. Would that be her best bet or is there a more affordable alternative that would give her a nice green lawn? |
|
You say you want to save humanity but it`s people that you just can`t stand John came to me in a dream and this is what he said. "I had a vision of a man on a flaming pie, and he told me that Betsy with a B not Lisa with a L is the biggest fan of mine". John trumps 'the boss' ! I WAS ROBBED BY THAT DEVIL WOMAN | |

Either your battery's dying, or your charging system is faulty, which won't allow your battery to recharge. (Pray it's the first rather than the second.) As for the gear situation, you may need a new transmission or merely a simple adjustment. There's really no way to tell until you get it to your local repair shop. |

Sod is the single quickest way to establish a lawn. It just has to be well cared for, (i.e. watered) very well. Growing grass in clay is challenging, but with good topsoil and drainage it can be done. |

Hey Chad, only two more weeks til AROTR!!
It's been raining here for a couple of days now and it's supposed to continue for a few more days, so I'll get a break from the endless yard work that has been taking up way too much of my free time lately. I wanted to let you know that if you need any free tickets to the Thursday night show at AROTR, my friends and I will have some extras since we each can bring a guest with us, so we can double up on our tickets.

It WAS a yes, but... The problem is that I just found out that my oldest daughter will have her tonsils out that week and Wifey is having carpal tunnel surgery three days later! I may only get to go in snippets this year. I was hoping to spend the whole week over there! Gotta be there for my girls, though. |

Don't buy the cheapest thing you can find, please! Buy a reputable brand. Period. I bought my mom a great little Toro a few years ago that she loves. But why do you hate gas powered trimmers? There are a lot of easy-to-start good brands on the market today that are pretty light. You pay more (give or take $200 USD) but keep it for 15-20 years and don't have to worry about cords. |

How do you mean hot? Is it air cooled or liquid cooled? If it's air cooled the engine needs to stay clean of any clippings that could block off air flow. If it's liquid cooled, it will have a radiator. Keep the radiator and screen cleaned out and check the coolant level. If those tips don't work, get the sledgehammer! |

Sorry, but spraying is the way to go. Just keep the dogs off of it for 24 hours and they'll be fine. It's either that, or get your weed fork out and start digging! |

Do you really think I know the answer to the "liquid or air cooled" question? Sheesh! I haven't a clue. Anyway, he's already looking into buying a new one. He's tired of mowing in shifts. Mow a little, let the mower cool down. Mow a little more, let the mower cool down. It takes him all afternoon! |

Hey Chad, I knew when I saw this thread on the other board that my 3 year run of no problems with my lawn mower was in jeopardy. I have a White Outdoor LT1650. The double pulley off the engine that runs the blades and the trans gave way. The bottom half fell off and now the blades don't turn. Ever seen that before? |

Yeah, that's your drive pulley. They go out fairly normally, and your mower's just a bigass paper weight without it! And White makes a half way decent tractor, so it's worth fixing as well. If you are mechanically inclined at all, you may be able to save some $$ and buy the pulley and install it yourself. You can get the pulley at any MTD (White, MTD, Cub Cadet, Troy-Bilt) retailer. The part number is 756-0983B, and it shouldn't cost you more than $45.00 or so.

You can buy all the stuff to splice it at Radio Shack. You'll need 2 weather proof male connectors and a weatherproof barrel connector. Also a twisting coaxial cable stripper and finally a cable crimper (unless you buy screw-on connectors, which I highly discourage) You'll spend about $35.00 for everything. Cut the cable the rest of the way through. Then take the stripper and twist it until you slice through the insulation. You should be able to remove the insulation and part of the white inner core as well. Make sure you remove the all the foil and wire strands that cover the white inner core. Push the male connectors onto the two ends as far as they'll go. Crimp them onto the ends and then take the barrel connector and screw the connectors into each end of it. VOILA!! You just spliced your sattellite cable! If you have questions about this, the guys at Radio Shack are usually pretty knowledgable. Good Luck! Oh, one more thing: Don't skrimp on the stripper or the crimper! Buy decent tools so you can use them again for years if need be. |

As a matter of fact, I liked his movements. They added to the show for me. What I liked was that they didn't pretend to be a Beatles band, but a band who loves The Beatles! That really came through during their set. |

My favorite bands ended up to be the bands that don't try to look like the Beatles but just play some kick ass music!! One of the guys that I was watching AYNIL with that night used to not care for Andy's "theatrical interpretations of the songs. He had posted some things last year on another site making fun of it all, but even he said he was getting into it more this year. I think Andy has toned it down some over the years though, he's not quite as dramatic as he used to be. Sunday night they got inducted into the new AROTR Hall of Fame, they've been there since the first year, with all the original guys still in the band!! |

Summer is in full swing and that means a few things: 1) Set your mower's blade(s) higher to avoid stressing your lawn. 2) If you mulch, install your mulch kits now if you haven't already. 3) When you water, it is best to do so in the early morning hours. During the afternoon when the sun is hottest, water will evaporate too fast to achieve maximum results, which is wasteful, and evening watering can lead to mold after the sun sets and temps cools down. 4) If you so wish, buy a summer fertilizer that will help your lawn tolerate the harsh summer sun and heat. 5) Of course, Bill, Claire and Emilee can ignore all of this until about 5-6 months from now.

Depending on how big the spot is, you can either make him buy a "patch" that consists of seed and filler material, or send him to a local sod farm and buy a roll of sod, which is generally about 18" by 3-4 feet. He'll have to dig out the burnt spot to lay the sod, but that's the quickest and most labor-intensive way for the little criminal to get your grass back for you.

Water early in the morning, as this will allow the moisture ample time to soak in without evaporating too quickly. If you water in the afternoon, it evaporates too quickly, thus wasting more water than is needed. If you water at night, the water may not evaporate fast enough to avoid molding in the cooler evening temps. |

Dear Dr. Beep, My ever-helpful dog continues to "water" my lawn and now I have a yellow polka-dots everywhere. Any helpful hints??? (And please don't suggest getting rid of the dog. . . . he's my home-security system, and I love the big lug. )

Dear Dr. Beep, We were watching the London news last night and saw that many Londoners are beating the drought & the current hosepipe ban by digging up their lawns and replacing it with plastic grass. The owners were boasting about how 'realistic' it was and that it didn't take any looking after. Have you ever heard of anything so ridiculous and sad? Have our trans-Atlantic cousins embraced plastic grass and, if so, what are your thoughts on it?

Those "polka-dots" are from the nitrogen in Fido's urine. Go to the vet or local pet store for some doggie treats that will neutralize it, and it should be all better. Or do what my jack-ass neighbor used to do, send him over to my yard to pee!  |

Some here have relented to astroturf and the like, but it's nowhere near as nice on your bare feet! And what happens when a dog or cat defecates on it? Wouldn't it stick to the plastic "blades"? And since the "grass" doesn't die or decompose, wouldn't that cause a health hazard for children and other pets? Ewww! Do you need a green plastic watering can for fake plastic grass?
