I disagree that pit bulls are lovely creatures and that humans make them mean. I truly believe that there are certain species of animal that are more pre-disposed towards violence than others and that, although there are examples of very placid pit bull terriers, they have a higher percentage of attacks per breed probably than any other breed of dog. Sometimes children are b*stards, despite their parents' best intentions. Sometimes pit bulls are b*stards despite their owners' best intentions as well.

Why can't a Lion or Tiger or, more realistically, a coyote or fox be tamed & be domestic animals? It's because they're too dangerous. There isn't that much difference between them and the Pit Bull. Of course, there are examples of coyotes and foxes being lovely pets, but that doesn't mean that their whole species are perfect to be petted by children - it just means that each individual animal of every species, just like us humans, are individuals. It's part of the reason I'm a vegetarian.

There is a Pit Bull thread in the 'Looking For Changes' section if anyone is interested in continuing this debate. ;)

Temperament Test Results

The American Temperament Test Society conducts tests every year on thousands of dogs to determine the soundness of their temperament. The American Pit Bull Terrier and the American Staffordshire Terrier routinely and consistently rank in the average range, and well above many "popular" breeds such as the beagle, collie, doberman pinscher, cocker spaniel and great dane. (Source: American Temperament Test Society)

Alfons Estelt of the American Temperament Test Society, Inc., stated the following with respect to pit bulls: "The American Pit Bull Terriers participating in our temperament evaluation have thus far shown a passing rate of 95%. The other 121 breeds of dogs in our tests showed the average passing rate of 77%"

It always amuses me that websites entitled "xxx:The Truth!" are very seldom interested in truth, rather than presenting a bunch of 'facts' in a very skewed way, one which suits their agenda.

www.dogbitelaw.com

Merritt Clifton, editor of Animal People, has conducted an unusually detailed study of dog bites from 1982 to the present. (Clifton, Dog attack deaths and maimings, U.S. & Canada, September 1982 to November 13, 2006; click here to read it.) The Clifton study show the number of serious canine-inflicted injuries by breed. The author's observations about the breeds and generally how to deal with the dangerous dog problem are enlightening.

According to the Clifton study, pit bulls, Rottweilers, Presa Canarios and their mixes are responsible for 74% of attacks that were included in the study, 68% of the attacks upon children, 82% of the attacks upon adults, 65% of the deaths, and 68% of the maimings. In more than two-thirds of the cases included in the study, the life-threatening or fatal attack was apparently the first known dangerous behavior by the animal in question. Clifton states:

If almost any other dog has a bad moment, someone may get bitten, but will not be maimed for life or killed, and the actuarial risk is accordingly reasonable. If a pit bull terrier or a Rottweiler has a bad moment, often someone is maimed or killed--and that has now created off-the-chart actuarial risk, for which the dogs as well as their victims are paying the price.

Clifton's opinions are as interesting as his statistics. For example, he says, "Pit bulls and Rottweilers are accordingly dogs who not only must be handled with special precautions, but also must be regulated with special requirements appropriate to the risk they may pose to the public and other animals, if they are to be kept at all."

It may not be a case of temperament - I have known some small dogs who have terrible temperaments, but a case of what Pit Bulls, Rotties & other breeds can do when they 'lose it'. That's the real issue.
...and in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

Great post, I agree with everything you said. I'm glad I live in a country where pit bullls are banned. They are dangerous animals, not much differnce between a pit bull and a tiger. If a pit bull attacks a child, a special tool is needed to open the mouth of the pitbull. Other dogs could attack too, but they're not as strong as pit bulls.
“Above all, I would like to be remembered as a man who was selfless, who strove and worried so that others could share the glory, and who built up a family of people who could hold their heads up high and say, 'We're Liverpool'.” - Bill Shankly

I suppose by the massive scale of the U.S. that's local... but six hours? Not exactly a day trip! ^_^

Looks like it's worth it, though. :)
