Ash Wednesday
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the Western Christian calendar, Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent and occurs forty-six days before Easter. It falls on different dates from year to year, according to the date of Easter; it can occur as early as February 4 or as late as March 10.

At Masses and services of worship on this day, worshippers are blessed with ashes by the celebrating clergyman. The priest or minister marks the forehead of each participant with black ashes, in the shape of a cross, which the worshipper traditionally retains until washing it off after sundown. In many Christian churches, the minister of ashes may also be a layperson or non-clergyman. The symbolism echoes the ancient Near Eastern tradition of throwing ash over one's head signifying repentance before God (as related in the Bible). The priest or minister offers the worshipper an instruction while applying the ashes.

The ashes are prepared by burning palm leaves from the previous year's Palm Sunday celebrations and mixing them with olive oil as a fixative. In the Roman Catholic Church, Ash Wednesday is observed by fasting, abstinence from meat, and repentance—a day of contemplating one's transgressions. The Anglican Book of Common Prayer also designates Ash Wednesday as a day of fasting. In other Christian denominations these practices are optional, with the main focus being on repentance.

The ashes used in the service of worship or mass are sacramentals, not a sacrament. The Penitential psalms are read.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Lenten season, which lasts until Thursday evening (using the Roman Catholic liturgical calendar) or until the Easter Vigil (under most Protestant denominations' reckoning). On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, Catholics undertake a complete fast or a bread and water fast. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are also days of abstinence from meat, as are all Fridays in Lent. Many Catholics continue fasting during the whole of Lent, as was the Church's traditional requirement, concluding only after the celebration of the Easter Vigil.

As the first day of Lent, it comes the day after Shrove Tuesday or Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday), the last day of the Carnival season. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word "Carnival" is derived from Latin carnem levare (removal of the meat) or carnem laxare (leaving the meat).

Hell yeah...there's still some in the cabinet, which is unbelievable..

I use to be much worse. I once had a friend buy me a whole case, and we're talking squishy, virgin, bright yellow fresh, never spoken a word newbornPeeps. I had to get over the addiction, so after over indulging myself in eating boxes, and then making Peep crafts, Peep mobiles, etc., (you should see those babies burn), I decided to kick the Peep habit. To make sure I wouldn't retrieve them from the garbage I had to step on them with boots before I put them in the garbage. That lasted till the following Easter...and I'll be damned, they make Peeps now for every occasion.

I also have a drawer full of "Peep points" that you cut out from the box. Damned if I know what there good for, but I know I have enough to redeem a yellow or pink Cadillac should the good Peeps peeps offer such a contest. :hyper:

I think the fact I hadn't drank in 17 months may have had something to do with it but before then I never drank, maybe just 1 a month when I used to go out but I certainly don't go out and get hammered on a regular basis. Some people i'd never met before were at the party and now i'm thinking that maybe they think i'm some kind of alchy. Just glad Richard didn't see. Feel like i've let Lennon down though and i've been crying about it

It's not letting him down to go out and enjoy yourself once in a while. The fact you can of an evening of occasionally to let your hair down can only help to make you a more relaxed and loving parent.

It's icy out here too, non. Watch out for the other cars on the road and those sneaky ice patches!

We're staying in today, being coach potato's.

Hey now, if Anna wants to help him clean his house for his parents I think thats a very nice thing. Us guys are slobs, we know it.

Besides you don't want Anna getting waited on hand and foot in a messy apartment do you?
