Ok, because I’m really bored today and the last smash battle is still on my mind, I’ve decided to make a small tips guide for anyone looking to move up in the tier list. This small guide will give tips on how to take the down the best (and the worst) at the next smash battle. Let’s start at the bottom of the tier and move up…. All of this data is from my observations of how people play, since I haven’t played everyone, and I’ve only played a few people once, I can’t make this totally accurate, but it should still help. If for some reason I offend anyone by posting this (or you REALLY don’t like people knowing how you play) than you can remove it, that wasn’t the point of this guide. E TIER Sarah Long (random character?): I only played her once, and I don’t know how often she’ll show up but if you (no offence) know how to play brawl somewhat decently I think you can win. Matt Wenzel (Sonic?): I’ve only heard that he played with Sonic and I don’t know if he’ll ever show up to another SB, but he’s the second lowest here so I think u can take him. Kate Pantaleo (don’t know): I don’t know if she’s going to show up at any other SBs, and I didn’t play her, so just do your best. PJ McQuirk (Pit): The only thing you’ll really have to worry about is Pit’s Side-B (Hi-yeyeyeye-YA!), which if you don’t jump over, or if you keep moving into it, can rack up damage quick. Jump over the Side-B and hit um from behind. D TIER Neal Kfoury (Bowser/Mario): I haven’t played Neal, but he’s known for suiciding. Thomas told me he was pretty good with Mario, so watch out for that cape. It can turn you around and send you recovering off in the wrong direction. Projectiles are also useless against that cape, so just try and get in a grab or a real quick attack to neutralize the cape’s power. Kamal Khan (don’t know): Didn’t play him either sorry Greg Dzuriscko (Falco): Greg is hard to gauge, he takes a lot of people to game three, but doesn’t always get the win. Falco’s laser is beastly, and Greg knows how to use it. The laser breaks into almost every attack and stops you in place unlike Fox’s, so running at him won’t work to well. Jumping over the laser isn’t the best option either, because Greg can take out a lot of people with Falco’s Up Smash. Reflect or absorb the laser via a Starfox or Earthbound character, or get Falco off the stage quick because his recovery isn’t as good as Fox and Wolf’s. Pat Swindle/Juice (Marth): There are A LOT of Marth players, so the strategy used to beat them is going to be similar. Watch for counters, and try and stay very far away so you can avoid that tip smash (for those who don’t know, if Marth hits someone with the tip of his sword, they take extra damage and fly farther) If you aren’t a ranged type, get in really close so you don’t get tip smashed. C TIER Derek Donahue/Double D/DD/ Double D Dance Party (Marth/Kirby): Another Marth player, Derek’s probably on the same level of skill (possibly lower) with Marth as Juice. Derek doesn’t use counters as often however, so you don’t have to worry about that as much. Derek also used Kirby last tournament, and he’s actually pretty good with him. Watch out for Kirby’s B-Down, as Derek uses it frequently. If you knock Kirby upward, don’t go after him, because that B-Down will gimp you easily (which I learned the hard way). Grab Kirby while he’s still a rock. Josh Soukup (Lucas): One of many Earthbound users, he’s a fan of Lucas’s powerful Smash attacks, especially the stick (Side Smash). Besides that, just use general Earthbound strategies, NO ENERGY PROJECTILES, Earthbounders will absorb it and get ALOT of health back. Watch out for the strong grabs too. Pfil Fujiwara (Lucas/Ness): Pfil is the only Earthbounder at SB that uses both Lucas and Ness, when he’s Lucas, watch out for any of the PK attacks, while he’s Ness, watch out for PK Fire and PK Thunder Cannon (When Ness hits himself with PK thunder). Pfil actually beat me in a Lucas vs. Lucas match (given I did suicide the last stock, but that’s still impressive) so don’t take him lightly with Lucas as he is better with him. Jake Tarasewicz (Pit): Jake fights similar to PJ. Jake uses the Side-B frequently and shoots off arrows whenever he’s got the chance. Jake tends to get a lot more KOs with Pit than PJ does, so don’t think you’ll be able to win just cause you know how to beat PJ’s Pit. He won’t always pursue you in the air; he’ll use the arrows, so take advantage of that Joe Pantaleo (Lucas/ Lucario): Let me say this, don’t take Joe lightly just because he’s on the C Tier right now, he didn’t do as well last tournament which resulted in his drop in tier. Anyway, what Joe brings to the Earthbounder’s table is a great use of PK Thunder. He uses it as an edge guarding attack and to PK thunder cannon people into the side of the stage. Lucario is a different story, and personally I think Joe’s better with him. Joe uses the Aura Ball a lot, but if you can reflect or absorb it, you should be ok. Joe will try to combo you into the Aura Ball by grabs or other means, watch out for that. Oh, and he’s a beast with the counter, so overall, keep your distance and hit um with range attacks, the Aura Ball is slow so you should be able to dodge/reflect it easily from a distance. Remember that Lucario gets stronger the more damage he has. Kyle Thompson (Kirby): Kyle Thompson knows Kirby. His biggest move is the B-Down, so don’t chase Kirby while he’s in the air or you’ll be the one going up. Unlike Derek however, Kyle’s move list is a bit bigger for Kirby. Kyle uses the B-Up frequently and gets a lot of KOs with Kirby’s hammer. The best way to beat Kirby is to grab him while he’s still a rock, and then try to hit him while he’s in the air on the side of the stage instead of above you. The problem with that strategy is that Kyle knows when he isn’t going to hit you, and cancels the B-Down, making it difficult to catch him. Get him to the left or right side of the stage where his B-Down is useless and finish Kirby off (but watch for a B-Up). Kyle Boyce (Zelda/Pokemans Trainer): Kyle’s got an interesting strategy, he plays as Zelda, and get this, stays as Zelda! Not Sheik! Weird right? His general strategy is to camp and abuse Din’s Fire, and he’s good at it. Din’s Fire has a huge hit box, so get as far away from it as possible. Avoid the air to, Zelda’s aerials are crazy powerful, and Kyle abuses those too. He is also a master at reflecting projectiles, so your best bet is to rush him and get in close and stay on the ground. Kyle’s major problem is that he can’t control the B-Up to well, so get him off the stage and see what happens. When he’s Pokemon Trainer, his best guy is Squirtle. He’ll slide along the stage via Side-B all day long; the only way to stop him is with a grab. If he knocks you off the stage, he’ll use water gun to keep you off, or grab the edge. Don’t give him the chance to charge up water gun to avoid this, and if he grabs the edge, beat him off with a B-Up B TIER Eric Wynn (Pit): Eric is hands down the best Pit user at SB. He has good control over the arrows, and will use them to rack up damage while you’re off the stage. He uses the Side-B to attack AND reflect projectiles, which he is really good at. He also uses the B-Down (which the other Pit users seem to overlook) to reflect stuff. Eric doesn’t leave many openings to attack, and with a reflective dashing attack (Side-
projectiles and close range combat are pretty useless. In my limited experience against him, I would advise you to pick a mid range character (someone with a long attack range, not a projectile, like Marth, Ike, or Dedede) or get in and hit him real quick with someone like Meta Knight. Another strategy would be to long range grab him with Link or Samus. Then again, I don’t know if he’ll show up again so maybe you won’t have to worry about him. Kevin Modaff (Lucas/Ike/Luigi): Yes, that’s right; I’m going to tell you how to beat me. Why? I play for fun, not wins, so if you guys want to beat me, read this and bring it. If I’m Lucas (which I will probably be as he’s my best guy), I’ll probably spam the PK Fire, so don’t run at me, and if I get you into the air, watch out for PK Thunder, which I use to edge guard. I’m also not too shabby with grabs, which I will use to set you up for PK Thunder. I’ll use every smash attack in Lucas’s arsenal a lot, so there aren’t many chances for you to get close from below or above. If you want to beat Lucas, rush in and hit me quick before I get the chance to throw out a smash attack (or hit me after I accidentally use the Up-Smash, which has a huge down time, and I will do that). Get me below the stage and I’ll have a hard time recovering with PK Thunder Cannon. Now I’m going to throw you all for a loop with Ike. Ike is a KO beast. He can KO you with just about any move at any percent. Me playing as Ike all depends on the stage, if Ike plays at the wrong stage, he’s useless (Norfair and Rainbow Cruise are no Ike zones) I abuse Ike’s Side-B dashing slash since it’s his fastest move, the move stops as soon as Ike comes into contact with an edge or another character, so it’s kind of like Fox’s but much stronger and much less suicide prone. Ike’s counter lasts FOREVER, but it isn’t as powerful as Marth’s, so grab Ike to avoid it. I will edge guard with the exploding eruption attack, so get above me, instead of on the edge itself (or just get away from me completely as Eruption has a huge hit box). Now for my final guy, Luigi. I won’t use Luigi too often, but if you see Luigi, get as far away as possible so I can’t do anything. Oh, and avoid the WEGI PAUNCH!!!!!! At all costs (not that I can ever do it) Thomas Modaff (Ness/Marth): Don’t be fooled by his age/size/hair length, Thomas is just as good if not better than me. Thomas’s mainstay is Ness, and he’s beaten me many times in a Lucas vs. Ness battle earning him the title of chief Earthbounder. He’ll try to PK Fire you, then bat smash you into tomorrow, a strategy that works more times than not. If you get caught in the fire, keep jumping or moving backwards to get out quick. Thomas is also the best at hitting people with the PK Thunder Cannon, and since he’s Ness, he can kill you with one hit from it. Knock Thomas below the stage however, and he probably won’t be able to recover as his PK Thunder Cannon aim isn’t great (at least when it comes to recovering). Thomas has gotten worse with Marth since he picked up Ness, but he can still counter better than most people. Thomas gets most of his KOs with clever counters and powerful air attacks. To beat Marth, grab him and keep your distance to avoid that tip sword and counters. Now let’s move to Thomas’s favorite move, spikes (an attack that sends you straight down). Thomas is determined to master this skill, and he’s already pretty good at them. Ness and Marth both have spikes, and Thomas is good at using both. Thomas’s best stage is Pirate Ship, and if you play him, you will go there, and you will be spiked. Get out of the water quick because Thomas will go for the easy spike kill while it’s hard for you to move in the water. If he misses with the spike, get back on the boat or hit him while he’s still in the water (or heck, spike him yourself). Jake Soukup (Pikachu): Lil Souk’s Pikachu is a nasty little guy. He favors the down Smash that spins you around and then smacks you into the air. The air is one place you don’t want to be when playing against Pikachu. Once Souks get you up in the air (usually by a grab or down smash) He’ll use Thunder right underneath you and send you even higher. Rather than try and air dodge it, keep moving in one direction while in the air, Pikachu has to stop in place to use Thunder, so if you keep moving you should be able to stay away from it. Pikachu’s smash attacks have a bigger range than it seems, so be sure to keep a slight distance and hit him when you see an opening. A TIER Waasiq Shafi (Mr. Game and Watch/Toon Link?): Now I only played Waasiq once, but I got a good feel for his strategy, at least with Mr. G. Mr. G’s crazy aerials are what you have to look out for. Keep your distance when fighting Waasiq in the air. Many people who play with aerial fighters like to do small jumps and hit you while you’re on the ground so don’t think you have the advantage because you’re not in the air. Energy projectiles are useless against Mr. G (a lesson I learned the hard way) Waasiq uses the oil drum absorb technique really well, so your best bet is gonna be to find a character that hits really hard with close range attacks. That way, you can avoid running into to too many aerials and you’ll be able KO Mr. G fast since he’s pretty lightweight. Watch out for Judgment, 1/9 times you’ll die instantly if you run into it. I don’t know if Waasiq mains Toon Link, but he was pretty good with him when I played him. That boomerang is tricky; you have to remember to dodge it when it comes back too. The bombs and arrows are a lot stronger than you might think too, Link’s projectiles are just great in general. All Link/Toon Link players are going to want to control the distance so they can use projectiles, so rush in and hit um hard, control the distance between you and him and you can win. Mike Swartz (Meta Knight): There isn’t much anyone can do against Meta Knight; he’s just too damn perfect. Meta Knight’s smashes are all crazy fast and Mike can rack up the damage on you quick. Mike uses the Tornado move to break into just about anything and nail some percent points on you. As difficult as it might be, you have to stop that tornado to have any chance to win. Use counters (excluding Lucario’s because I don’t think he can break into the tornado) to break MK out of his tornado and hit before he can make another move. Sometimes even that won’t work though, I countered Mike’s tornado with Ike about five times and two out of those five I countered the wrong way. Projectiles are nice, but Mike will close the distance fast with MK, so control the distance between him and you to get that win. If Thomas did it, than you can too! (sorry Mike and/or Thomas XD) Eric Shen (Martha er… Marth): Your best bet against this guy is hoping he doesn’t show up, but in the case that he does, this is what you should do. He tends to jump in the air right before attack you, he prefers Marth’s aerials. Use that jump as a signal to dodge or counter. If he gets you to the side of the stage you’ll need a lot of luck to get back. Eric is a beast at edge guarding, and can gimp you easily with a tip slash or spike. Hit him before he hits you or use your recoveries to attack him while he’s in the air rather than make it back to the stage. That way, you can stop his attack, or in the case that you start falling, take him with you. If you’re a projectile user than you will have a much easier time against Marth. Marth has to get in close to do anything, and if you can keep your distance and use projectiles via the Zelda guys, Star Fox guys, or Earthbounders you will have a huge advantage. Eric is the best Marth user here, so you’re gonna need to really bring it if you want to win. S TIER (Good luck) These tips aren’t gonna count for a lot against these guys, but nothing is impossible. Ben Rowe (Ice Climbers/Diddy Kong/King Durdedur/ROB): Ben’s got some pretty down right nasty strategies. If you’re going up against the Ice Climbers, get nowhere near them. Chain grabs are banned at a lot of tournaments because they are just too good, and not every character has one. If you get caught in a grab, try ANYTHING to get out, and hope you’re not on a stage that has no edge (Delphino is a no-no). Separate the two Ice Climbers and take out the drone one quick, that doesn’t guarantee a win but it makes things much easier. Stay in the air if you can, the Ice Cs. can’t grab you in the air. I’ve beaten Ben’s Ice Climbers once but I’ve never beaten Diddy Kong. Those darn banana peels must be avoided at all costs. Don’t try and throw them off the stage or at Ben because he’ll just pick them back up. Instead, throw them to a part of the stage where they will do no harm, and hammer that little monkey. Don’t pick a small stage or the bananas will own you, pick a big stage where you can throw them out of harms way (Rainbow Cruise). If you don’t want to touch the naners, use projectiles (Falco’s laser would be effective). I’ve seen Ben play as R.O.B. but never actually played against him so idk about that one. Dedede is very similar to the Ice Climbers, except he’s much slower and hits harder. Don’t get near him but don’t fight him in the air either as Dedede’s aerials are pretty good. Get Dedede below the stage and hit him when he comes back up with the B-Up, he’s basically a big target when he uses it. Watch for chain grabs. Sam Rowe (Snake/and many more): I’ve seen Sam play with all kinds of characters but haven’t played him much myself. I know he uses Snake a lot, so we’ll focus on him. The key to fighting with Snake is to control the distance and lead players into traps like C4, land mines or grenades. Throw the grenades back if they hit you, if they don’t, just get away from them. The grenades are way more powerful than most people think, and the Nikita missiles are too. If you move around, the missile shouldn’t be much of a problem. Remember where Sam puts the land mine, and try to slam him into it, as it will hurt Snake. One move I don’t quite understand is how Sam slides across the stage super fast and shoots a rocket upward, that move is deadly. Avoid being directly above Snake to avoid the missile and his heavy hitting up aerial. If you use Snake’s traps against him and hit him quick before he has a chance to use his powerful Side Smash, then you might just have a chance. Well that’s that. If you looked at your personal section and thought “man, now everyone knows how I play!” then look at it as a chance to improve yourself. See what I wrote on how to beat you and turn it against people who think they can win. No one will beat you just by knowing your strategy, it takes skill overall to win. If anyone is really upset that I posted this (for whatever reason) than you can remove it, it’s fine. I hope some people found this helpful/interesting/time killing/amusing

Stage Ban: Final Destination Seriously, ban Final Destination on him, or you will be sorry. Diddy is AMAZING there, and it is his best level by far. Smashville is another one of his favorites, so you could consider that. Strike Final Destination and Smashville, the battle will probably start in Battlefield. He may strike Battle Field depending on who he is playing, but usually Yoshi's and Lylat. Counterpick: Rainbow Cruise, Brinstar, Norfair, Lylat Cruise Those are his worst levels, not so much Lylat, but he hates it, so it could be a good choice. Rainbow cruise will force me to use either Rob or Dedede, which I don't have as much experience with. As Diddy it would mess with my Bananagins, Ice Climbers the chaingrabs. Be careful on the boat though, because Dedede can infinite you on the side, at least until the boat falls out. Brinstar and Norfair only if you know the level well, and your character has a good air game. Lylat if all else fails. Additionally, you can always just counterpick your best level. Any random jank level would be okay, but only if you are really comfortable playing in it. Diddy Kong: When he throws a banana at you, you have a few options. Option one would be to shield the banana, and it would land in front of you to pick up unless he instant throws it back at you. You could try to pick it up with a dash attack aswell, which is efficient if the dash attack hits him also. Airials and air dodges will catch them too. One trick you can do is instant throwing, which is canceling the airdodge animation with a banana toss. Basically press L or R when the banana is coming at you, then instantly use the C-stick to throw back. Try to gain control of the bananas, or throw them off the stage. Either way, good luck, I garuntee his banana control is better than yours. Diddy Kong has a very predictable recovery. Normally it is just side B to up B. If you hit him while charging the Up B, you will kill him, but also take around 20%, so be sure the trade off is worth it at that point (It should be if I die.) When there are no bananas out, you have to keep up the pressure, and don't let him pull out a single one. Combo and chase him, and most importantly of all; don't get hit. Ice Climbers: Don't get grabbed. Literally, that is how to avoid them. Stay in the air, spot dodge, seperate the Ice Climbers, anything as long as you avoid the grab. Ledge stalling (Planking) works well, but excessive use is stalling which would result in a game loss. Platforms are alot harder to grab on, so staying on them in levels like Norfair will give you great ways to avoid grabs. Don't stay in the shield too long or he will grab you out of it. However, don't think Ice Climbers can't do anything without grabs. He will de-synch the Ice Climbers, basically turning the game into a 2v1. If that is the case, projectiles and spikes are easily to land on the second climber, messing up the strategy. Also charging up powerful smashes can work wonders as well. You have to play more "gay" when he is Ice Climbers, and camp more than usual. If you play too agressive he will shield grab you, which could equal a stock. Projectile spamming and staying as far away as possible is great, but they can cancel out most projectiles with the Ice Blocks (including a fully charged Aura Sphere.) So know when to camp, and when to play agressive and keep the climbers spereated. Just remember, Ice Climbers have one of the worst grab ranges, so keep your distance and you should be fine. King Dedede: Not as big of a threat as others, but if you pick Rainbow Cruise it might force him into using Dedede, which he has much less experience with. Watch him when he throws Waddle Dees, you never know when it will be a gordo. He can chaingrab most characters across the stage, and even infinite some. The forward smash is VERY powerful, and can kill at really low percents. See exhibit A. Exhibit ADedede can gimp extremely well with his back and forward airs, so be unpredictable when recovering. One thing to note is that Dedede is one of the fastest fallers in the game, so juggling him is quite easy. Videos to watch: Ice ClimbersNote how the grabs were avoided in this game. From 15 attempted grabs, 9 didn't connect, 2 were by Solo Climber, 1 was dropped on the first grab, 2 were dropped after multiple grabs, and only one was to death, which started at 90%. Diddy KongThis is the most recent Diddy Kong video, but it isn't the greatest, his bananagins are much better now, and I will replace this video eventually. King DededeWatch out for chain grabs! tl;dr: Avoid bananas, don't get grabbed, ban Final Destination, and CP jank levels.

Stage Bans: Battlefield, any level you hate
Basically, he will probably counterpick Battlefield unless he needs to go jank, and when he goes jank you have a shot, more on that later. Basically though, ban your character's worst level on him. No matter where he takes you or you take him, he WILL have matchup advantage. Know where your character doesn't play well, and ban that. Stage strike Battlefield and Smashville, he will strike Final Destination, and the game will start in either Yoshi's Island or Lylat Cruise, which aren't his best levels.
Counterpick: Jank levels, Your best level, Final Destination
By jank levels I mean Jungle Japes, Brinstar, Norfair, Rainbow Cruise, stuff that people don't play on too often. He doesn't know the levels well, so if you pick one level and learn it inside and out, pick that. Your best level is always a good counterpick, but if you lost pretty bad game one, your best bet is to pick jank and hope for the best. Final Destination is also a good choice because it gives you more breathing room, so it is worth considering.
One of the most important things to know going into this matchup is to know what can hit him out of tornado. You can knock him out of it with nearly any down air if you come from above, but know which of your moves have big disjointed hitboxes or high priority. Something that nobody but Ben or Sam does is tilting the shield. When he is using tornado on your shield, lightly move the control stick upwards so your character raises their shield a bit. This helps to prevent him from poking through your shield, which he will at some point in the set. One thing to note is that if you hit him from the tornado, chances are he will immediately do a Drill Rush, from him radidly pressing B and holding over, so be ready for it and punish.
Never roll directly into, behind or directly in front of Mike or you will get punished. If you need a quick escape, roll away from him, but NEVER try to punish anything by rolling behind him or into him, you will get hurt badly. Never chase him off stage, or he will kill you. Metaknight nearly always has a safe option of stage, so instead try to edgeguard with projectiles if you have them.
Against Mike it generally isn't a good idea to get too agressive, Metaknight can punish nearly anything, and a TON of his moves are virtually unpunishable. Down smash can and will be spammed, so know that if he does one down smash, he will likely do another. His forward smash appears to have alot of ending lag, but it really doesnt. Don't try to run in and punish his forward smash, or you will be the one being punished. It is better to stay from a distance with projectiles (Metaknight has none) and try to rack on the damage and force an approach. If you are camping, then he isn't having fun, and when he isn't having fun, he is playing worse. Keep that in mind, it is important! Watch carefully what he does on his approaches, because chances are he will attempt the same approach twice and you could be ready for and punish it with a Smash or tilt. His common approaches include the tornado, down tilts, dash attacks, dash grabs, short or full hopped airials, and a few more. He doesn't mix his game up very often, so try to find patterns and read him.
One strategy that has allowed people such as Juice, Kyle T., Greg, and many more to take games off of Mike is by getting him to use Captain Falcon. Just ask him to, and if he doesn't agree, tell him it isn't fair. Chances are, he will pick Captain Falcon, who he is TERRIBLE with.
Tl;dr: Know the matchup, don't get hit, tell him to pick Captain Falcon.

Stage Ban: Norfair, Final Destination
Jake will probably take you to Norfair, so make sure you ban that. If you are confident in your ability to play on Norfair, Final Destination is your next best choice. For stage striking, it would be best to strike Final Destination for sure, then your choice of the others, but Smashville is reccomended to strike. Battlefield is probably where you want the match to start in.
Counterpicks: Battlefield, Luigi's Mansion, Your best level
Battlefiled is great because you have platforms to evade the camping, and it isn't too large of a stage. Thunder won't go through the platforms, so if he uses it under a platform be ready to punish. Same goes for Luigi's Mansion, it will really limit alot that Pikachu can do there, so it is another great option. As always, picking your best level is a good idea as well.
Pikachu is very annoying to play agains. He can camp, kill rediculously low, (it has been rumored that Jake can kill at 68%) and rack on damage extremely quickly. He is very fast and can get out of bad situations fast as well. Overall this will be an annoying matchup, but knowing Pikachu's weaknesses and how to evade his best attacks will make this alot easier.
The first thing that needs to be mentioned is the thunder. If you are near the top of the screen, you will die if you are hit with it, nearly regardless of your percent. Jake will try to hit you into this situation with Up smash, Up tilt, Up throw, Down smash and many more. The problem is that thunder lasts just about as long as the average air dodge, so you need to time your dodge just right. Wait until you hear, "PIKAAAA!" and press L or R right then, and try to use the air dodge to go through the thunder, not into it.
One of the most common set ups that Jake will use to get you into that position is with the down smash. At first the down smash seems devastating, being able to rack in a huge amount of damage, and with great knockback as well. With the right knowledge though, you can escape and take little damage from the attack. As soon as you see you are trapped in the smash, start rolling the control stick from diagonal up-left to diagonal up-right back and forth, while repeatedly tapping up on the C-Stick. This is the quickest way to get out of it. If your mashing on the C-stick isn't fast enough, you can alternatively just hold up on the control stick, but you will take more damage and might still get knock back. Jake will normally jump at you, fast fall a forward air, and that combos into the downsmash. Be ready for the smash, and start trying to SDI out of it. If you see him jumping at you, roll away, or simply move a few steps backwards and punish the likely down smash with a smash of your own.
Pikachu is amazing and punishing spot dodges, so if you spot dodge, make sure you know 100% that he isn't going to use a move with a lasting hit box. Down smash lasts insanely long, so against Pikachu it is better to be more patient in the shield. However, don't stay in the shield too long or you will get grabbed, and Pikachu can chaingrab, but Jake isn't very good at it. Jake will ocasionally mess up his combos, or try to chaingrab your character even if your character cannot be chaingrabbed, so try to punish his attempted regrab with a move of your choice. Just know that some characters can be chaingrabbed to death by Pikachu, like Fox and Captain Falcon, and other fast fallers.
Tl;dr: Air dodge when you hear "PIKAAAA!", SDI the down smashes, punish failed combos, don't spot dodge.

Stage Bans: Port Town Aero Dive, your worst level
He will take you here, he takes nearly everyone here. You can either take the time and learn the level, or just ban this, he wont know where to go. Nothing else is worth banning, unless you have a level that you are really bad at. Not much else to say, just ban Port Town.
Counterpicks: Your best level, Battlefield
Battlefield only because of the platforms. As you will read later, he likes to get above you and come down on you with Brick and the Cutter, but Battlefield you should be pretty safe. In most situations it would probably be best to just take him to your best level.
Kyle will most likely pick Kirby on you, but he has played Rob and Metaknight before, but they aren't really a threat at all. It is Kirby who you should worry about, however if you play smart you shouldn't need to worry at all. Kyle is easily predictable, and if you pay attention to where he is on the map you can know what he will do, and punish it.
If he jumps directly above you, he will use the Brick move, so get out of the way, and grab him on the ground. You can grab right through the brick, so grab then throw for easy damage. If he is slightly to the side of you, he might use the Cutter attack, which sends out a projectile and is harder to punish, so try to get behind it to avoid the projectile, or jusr shield the attack.
Kirby can KO you at really low percents, so be careful when he is in close. Instead, try to stay back, wait for the brick, punish, and get damage like that. If he is simply walking towards you, he will either use the Hammer attack, or a Smash attack. The hammer is slow enough for you to punish it with a smash, but Kirby's smashes are pretty fast, so shield the hit and then react with either a shieldgrab, or drop the shield and punish with any fast move of your choice.
Overall, play patiently and wait for opportunity, it will arise. You can win against Kyle without ever playing agressive and just waiting for him to do something and react. Reactive play is probably better than proactive play, however if you have a great offense, you could probably just keep the attacks coming and not allow him to do any of his moves to begin with.
Tl;dr: Ban Port Town Aero Dive, counterpick any level you like, and just punish his obvious attacks from above.
