[size0]Grenade ready to explode on chart

Singles
Bruno Mars’ Grenade is on course to match its chart-topping achievements in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand in the UK this weekend by debuting at number one.

The newly-issued Elektra/Atlantic single, whose pre-release interest has been so great two cover versions made the Top 200 last week, is currently outselling its nearest four challengers combined, according to the OCC.

The challengers are led by BBC Sound of 2011 winner Jessie J whose Island/Lava single Do It Like A Dude is around 2,600 sales ahead of Def Jam/Mercury’s Rihanna featuring Drake single What’s My Name, which climbed to number one last Sunday.

Ahead of the release of her second album, XL act Adele’s cover of Make You Feel My Love from her first album is gaining another new lease of life with its sales up 161.4% on the week and it is currently the week’s fourth biggest seller, having sat at 27 on last Sunday’s chart. Her first album 19, meanwhile, is number six on the midweek artist albums chart, moving up from 20.

There are no other new arrivals as yet into the Top 10, although Epic act JLS should move from outside the Top 75 into the Top 20 with new single Eyes Wide Shut, while Rihanna’s S&M is challenging to make a return to the Top 40.

Albums

On the artist albums chart Sky 1’s Must Be The Music inaugural winner Emma’s Imagination will have the first big debut album of 2011 with Stand Still presently the week’s third top seller. The Polydor release is behind Def Jam/Mercury’s Loud by Rihanna and 679/Atlantic act Plan B’s The Defamation Of Strickland Banks, which were also one and two on last week’s chart.

Rough Trade’s British Sea Power and Decca’s Israel Kamakawiwo’ole currently occupy positions 14 and 18 with new albums in what is otherwise a fairly quiet week for new album releases. Meanwhile, fellow Decca act Imelda May, who appeared on Graham Norton’s BBC1 chat show last Friday, is enjoying a 268.8% week-on-week rise in sales with her album Mayhem, which was 51 on last week’s chart and has moved up to 22 on the week so far.
