Perhaps it seems premature to crown 2008's best new artist, but Leona Lewis arrives on U.S. shores with plenty of jewels in her tiara. In November, debut disc "Spirit" debuted at No. 1 in the United Kingdom—selling the equivalent of 200 albums per minute on release day—and has since become the fastest-selling debut of all time, while launch single "Bleeding Love" topped the singles chart for four weeks. It's tough to fathom that so many melody-free gimmick jams continue to junk up the stateside airwaves, but Lewis' bow is not only a one-listen harmonic show-stopper, it is also hip, soulful, beat-rippling and an undeniable vocal tour de force. And that's all before adding the visual: Lewis is simply stunning. Not since a youngster named Whitney Houston arrived has Clive Davis had so much to work with. The gorgeous "Spirit"—A&R'd at home by Simon Cowell—arrives March 18 in the United States. By then, "Leona" should be working its way to household-name status. A colossal and timeless debut. —Chuck Taylor http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/content_dis...3c937d1e69c8a7c ...doesnt get much better than that! |

She's not in the same vocal class as Whitney - even during her early recordings, Whitney had a depth and soul that Mariah and Leona lack. If I had to, I'd place Leona somewhere between Mariah and LeAnn Rhimes...but Leona needs to develop her own style a bit more. In a few years (and especially after she tours) that will come...Im sure she'll be around for quite a long time! |

A lot of her X Factor performances showed she could do it as well as Whitney and Mariah can. Her performance of I Will Always Love You was flawless... |

Her X Factor performances were incredible, but they we're in the same league as Whitney. From really early in her life, Whitney was around the biggest and best voices of the last 40 years - Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Dionne Warwick...she was groomed in an enviroment of music, and it really tells. She was singing professionally from a young age (even singing backing vocals on the original version of "I'm Every Woman") and by the time she came to the publics attention she had her craft nailed. Leona hasnt had that same breeding and it tells; her X Factor performances were brilliant, but she was just 'singing' most of them, she didnt embody the song. When she's been around for a few years she'll learn how to interpret a song properly and will hopefully develop her own style (which at the moment is a tad too close to Mariah's)...judging on what we've seen so far though, the future is bright! |
