Oprah opens up about deceased puppy
March 20, 2009, 10:51 AM EST
Entertainment Tonight
Oprah discussed the loss of her puppy, Ivan, who passed away last week, on Friday's "Oprah Winfrey" show.

"We were all so happy," Oprah said, referring to when she first adopted two cocker spaniel puppies, Ivan and Sadie. "Then things took a turn."

She described how first little Ivan, and then Sadie came down with Parvovirus, a deadly canine illness, and that little Ivan had passed away last Thursday. Oprah's pups had already received their first round of vaccinations for Parvo, and had been scheduled to get a second round, but fell ill before they could receive them.

She told the audience that Sadie has been hospitalized for eight days with the virus, and showed pics of the poor pup with a protective cone around her head, lying ill in a hospital doggie bed.

However, the pooch's vet, Dr. Alexis Newman, joined the broadcast live from Arboretum View Animal Hospital in Illinois with Sadie by her side, and the adorable pup looked much better.

The doctor said, to Oprah's relief that Sadie is now "eighty percent back to being a puppy."

The vet explained that Parvo can be caught from other dogs, but also, that it's in the environment. Oprah speculated that the dogs could have gotten the virus when she took them outside on a warm day when the snow was melting.
