Darkness.

Chezina Rodriguez speaks and after a moment it becomes clear he’s recording his voice without the benefit of a picture, if his voice is any sign of the shape he’s in then he must be tired, his voice is weary, soft spoken at intervals and carrying with it hints of depression.

“I wanted to get a message out to all of my Faithful Fans on my forums and perhaps Xtreme Fusion if they choose to visit my site, hopefully you can all forgive my half ass effort and just accept the sound of my voice for now, I Know how to use the camera but I haven’t been sleeping well as of late”

“First off I want to thank you all for coming to Showdown, I know you didn’t know which match I had but so many of you showed up wearing those new “Faithful” T-Shirts and it really warmed my heart, your support means the world to me and it will always be something I value above all else in this business”

He pauses and we can hear a stifled yawn in the background.

“I Want to take a moment to speak to Beautiful Shame, you made me us challenge for Destiny, a challenge for what you could call the biggest match of our careers, we’d probably be smart to turn you down, this is a match that could very well break us, we could lose our Tag Team Titles, the stress alone of a match with such Ramifications would be enough to make me lose sleep at night, and like I mentioned earlier I’ve been getting little sleep as it is”

“But I’ve never been considered smart, especially in SVO, I can’t deny the fact this is an opportunity of a lifetime for us, a crushing loss if we lose for certain, but a rich reward if we should win, So on behalf of my fans and myself we accept your challenge Beautiful Shame”

“Just when I think the stakes can’t get any higher they do, I meet every challenge face on and we will meet you in the middle of the ring with our Tag Team Titles on the line, Our Best versus your best, and in the end despite our best efforts the simple math of the squared circle will prevail yet again…four men enter…two men leave as winners, highly decorated winners with the biggest reward in tag team wrestling…Beautiful Shame a smart team would be scared at this prospect, but like I said before “Smart” isn’t what I’m known for, me? I can’t wait for it Beautiful Shame, what a rush it’s going to be!”

The sound of movement can be heard

“Now if you’ll all forgive me I need to go to bed, tomorrow I start preparing for our next title defense against Xtreme Fusion, so to all my fans out there…Have Faith, I’ll see you all soon”

There’s a small soft “Click” and then nothing more

-Off Air-

-The Next Morning-

A weight born of Melancholy had settled like a mantle over his shoulders.

His apartment was empty now, devoid of any presence but his own, he hadn’t realized how much he missed Josh and Misty until he’d come home to his empty apartment, the two had been nearly attached to him for days straight, sometimes he’d wondered if he was going to go crazy over their daily intrusions in his life, Josh’s ever vigilant protection of him and his gruff exterior, complimented by Misty’s exuberant and loud lifestyle, the two people couldn’t have been anymore opposites and yet they know shared an apartment close by.

Wonders never ceased.

With Misty’s help Chezina had purchased a small camera that he could take with him, at any time when the mood struck he could turn it on and tell his fans (or his opponents) just what was on his mind, again with Misty’s help he’d learned how to upload these impromptu interviews to his website, a task he found very rewarding when all was said and done, his fans gave him so much and the least he could do was give back to them however he could.

His daily interviews no matter how small were the high points of his day, the rest of the time he drifted around his apartment aimlessly, much like he had after his Ladder Match at Seasons Beatings, mourning the loss of one particular presence that had filled his apartment and brought him so much happiness.

Mary…

Xtreme Fusion hadn’t defeated him before, no one in SVO had, in the face of all the success he was having his depression seemed almost silly, but the fact of the matter was that Chezina Rodriguez, the man who had never lost in SVO had lost something close and precious to him, DVD hadn’t taken the Tag Team Title from him but he’d ripped out his heart.

And weeks later Chezina was still feeling the repercussions of the deviously plotted attack.

“Loss”

Chezina spoke to no one in particular, looking around his apartment he decided that staying there wasn’t going to do anything to help his mood, deciding to out for a ride he thought perhaps he could find solace on the road, on his bike, maybe even track down the elusive answers to questions that kept him awake at night.

He was willing to try just about anything at this point, his match with Xtreme Fusion would demand every ounce of his strength, courage, and focus, and then perhaps even more, and in his current state Chezina knew that Xtreme Fusion would pick him apart…as they were apt to do.

--

There was something soothing and relaxing about the feeling of the road passing underneath him, the roar of his bike and the sounds of the city around him spoke to him on a level that he hadn’t experienced since his mother had sung to him to calm him from a nightmare or chase away monsters under his bed when he was young enough to believe in such things.

Driving aimlessly he chewed up the miles and left them behind him, at least here out on the open road his tumultuous thoughts seemed to fall silent, they lurked ever present in the background with the promise that when he stopped they would be on him again, but for the time being he left all doubts and questions aside.

The Church didn’t catch his eye so much as the man he saw in front of it, he caught the sight out of the corner of his eye.

The man he’d shared the jail cell with, the one who’d given him such comfort and good council about God, standing there atop the church steps, massive arms folded about his chest and a serene and peaceful smile on his face, all this Chezina saw in the course of three seconds, not long enough to even be sure he saw it.

But he “Believed” he did

He slowed down so quickly and made such an abrupt turn that he earned the Ire of the driver behind him who honked his horn and yelled something out the window at him as he drove past, but Chezina pulled into the Church parking lot and paid the curses no heed.

Getting off his bike he looked around but the man had vanished once again, thinking perhaps he’d gone into the church Chezina jogged up the steps and opened the door, stepping inside he shut the doors behind him.

Inside the Church was like stepping into another world, one of silence and contemplation, the noise and Hustle and bustle of Chicago sounded distant, like a dream fading as they often did when he woke up, his footsteps echoing loudly as he walked deeper into the House of the lord, he looked around trying to find any sign of the man.

But the Church was empty, though the inside of the building was spacious there was no conceivable spot for a man of such size to hide himself, no corner to squeeze into and no door that he could have gotten through quick enough to elude Chezina without him being aware of it.

“Who are you?” Chezina asked out loud, his voice echoing with the same volume that his footsteps had, but unfortunately no answer was forthcoming.

Looking around Chezina saw the sunlight shining through the stained glass windows of the Church, casting glorious and colorful pools of light on the floor, Chezina imagined that when the organ was playing and the congregation was singing it would be a sight to behold, the way his own footsteps and voice echoed he could only imagine that the sounds of hundreds of voices raised in song would be nothing short of spectacular, such an accomplishment that God himself would be forced to take notice.

He smiled despite himself, sinking down into a pew in the front row he felt more at peace than he ever had in his entire life, this place was truly magical, looking up at Christ on the Cross he sighed deeply as he spoke.

“I can’t imagine the pain you had to endure” he said to the wooden statue “I’m sure it must make mine seem trivial by comparison, but forgive me because all I can feel is my pain, and it feels like it’s consuming me”

“When you think about it…dealing with it seems so simple, a girl broke my heart, you pick up the pieces and move on right? But then you combine that with all the stress I was under, my mother's surgery, my fight with my father, my conflict with DVD, and the fact that she was the only thing that was keeping me from falling apart through all of it…”

Chezina shakes his head

“It’s so much, I lie awake staring at the ceiling at night, I can’t sleep, I don’t feel like eating, and the pressure keeps building week after week, it’s like they’re not going to be happy until I’m broken, It started off as a simple match, someone telling me I’ll never win, I had to prove them wrong…I “Wanted” to prove them wrong, and then I won, then there was someone else who wanted to prove me wrong, the stakes keep getting higher and higher, people look up to me, they chant my name, I didn’t know what I was getting into, and now I’m a role model, If I was smart I would have run back home, but now I’m too far in, it’s all on the line now and I don’t want to let anyone down…”

Sighing he stands up

“Please…grant me the peace of mind to deal with my trials as half as gracefully as you endured your own, grant me that and I think I can make it through this.”

The sound footsteps echoing drew his attention away from the statue, turning Chezina saw who assumed was a Priest making his way across the floor, he walked with a purposeful, confident stride, and as he drew closer Chezina saw much to his surprise he was blind.

“I didn’t recognize your voice, Welcome to our Lord's house” he said stopping in front of Chezina and offering him a hand, surprised by the man's sense of direction and accuracy despite being blind Chezina took his hand and shook it.

“I’m sorry if I disturbed you, I don’t usually talk out loud” he said a little embarrassed

“No need to be sorry” The Priest said “Confession is good for the soul whether it’s spoken out loud or in your heart, he hears you, though I heard you too, would you like to talk?”

“I wouldn’t want to waste your time” Chezina said

Waving a hand dismissively the Priest sat down next to him

“I’ve never turned anyone away before, I don’t plan on starting now”

With such an invitation Chezina found he couldn’t refuse it, he began to talk and was almost embarrassed at how fast the words spilled from his lips and the volume of his fears and worries, the Priest took it all in silently, nodding and gesturing for him to continue.

“It’s all stress…” Chezina finished “And in the end I know what I’m feeling is a broken heart, it’s embarrassing that I’m letting it get to me like this but it can’t be helped”

The Priest nodded, Chezina realized he was perhaps the youngest Priest he’d ever seen perhaps in his late twenties or early thirties.

“The Typical response I should give you is this…” he said “Sometimes the good Lord tests us, sometimes he throws more at us than we think we can handle, but he never throws more at us than he knows we can handle, and in the end we’re all the stronger for it, and you will be too”

With a smile he continued

“But here’s my response…sometimes the things we love in life are ripped away from us for no reason that we can conceive, it hurts, other people might laugh it off, but sometimes you can’t, for all our toughness sometimes we get dropped to our knees, and all in all it’s real bitch isn’t it?”

Chezina blinked at the choice of language

“Yeah…it is” he said finally

“Not all women will rip out your heart and step on it in front of you, it sounds like this “Mary” was taken advantage of just as much as you were, but in the end her morals were weaker, and yours were stronger, it’s a fascinating world you’ve found yourself in, Wrestling…I wrestled in college” he chuckled “But I never expected the Professional wrestling world was so full of depth and emotion”

“Neither did I” Chezina agreed

“Well allow me to say this…there are plenty of fish in the sea” the Priest said “The Good Lord provided us with many opportunities for companionship, I suggest when you feel you’re sufficiently prepared you seek out another companion”

Chezina looked at the man curiously

“Are you telling me I need to get laid?” he asked finally

The Priest laughed

“I was suggesting you find someone you can share a common bond with, a friend…though if you wind up at this “friend's” house after hours and she invites you in well…” he looked at Chezina and winked “The Lord moves in mysterious ways”

Chezina paused for a moment and then laughed

“You’re not like any other priest I’ve ever met, how did you wind up here?” he asked genuinely interested in this man.

Pondering for a moment as if searching for the best way to begin The Priest gathered his thoughts

“It really all began out in the Desert, I was leading a Patrol in Iraq, Back when Bush was at the helm and the American people believed in what we were doing, Desert Storm” he said “It was the dead of night, you never realize how alien the desert landscape can look at night, it’s lonely, empty, but beautiful, a stark contrast to what you find there during the day”

He shivered slightly

“We were wrapping up a patrol when we encountered resistance, we couldn’t see properly in the dark, our night vision goggles could only make out shapes in the sand, I watched as one of those shapes threw something, we hit the dirt but before I could yank my goggles off the flash bang exploded, it was the most beautiful yet painful flash of white light I’d ever seen in my life, and it would be the last thing I’d ever see in my life, I lay there screaming on the sand”

He shook his head

“Turns out it had been one of our other patrols, more green, they’d panicked and fought without thinking, it was a frightening situation, in hindsight I don’t blame them one bit for acting the way they do, anyone who would call them clumsy or idiots has obviously never been out in the vast desert in the middle of the night fearing for your life, in the end no one was hurt…it was a miracle”

“But you were hurt…” Chezina said “You lost your sight…how could you call that a Miracle?”

“Oh I didn’t at first, I lay there in the hospital bitter and angry with everyone, even God, you name them and I blamed them for my situation, but the more I lay there thinking about it the more I realized that everything happened for a reason, I could be in a wheelchair right now, I could have lost my legs, my arms, I could have been hurt a lot worse than I was, I began to realize that maybe God had a plan for me despite what I had lost, when I came back home I learned how to live without sight, I became a passionate speaker, I wanted to speak about the Lord, my path led me here”

He smiled looking over at Chezina

“We all experience Loss, it’s what we do after we lose that really matters, Your heart is broken, you’re under a lot of stress, you don’t know what to do and yet what you do next will probably be one of the most important choices you ever make in your life” he said “We’re the same like that you and I”

“But we’re not…you lost your sight…I let myself get fooled by a woman…it’s completely different”

“It is different, but it’s a kind of pain you’ve never felt worse in your life, it’s crippling you right now, don’t get me wrong Pain takes on all shapes and forms but the bottom line is it’s brought you to a period of great doubt in your life, in that the pain is just as important no?”

Chezina sighed standing up

“You’re right, and deep down I know what I need to do”

Looking at the Priest he suddenly realized he hadn’t even told him his name

“I’m Chezina Rodriguez” he said

“Father Noah” the Priest said Rising and shaking Chezina’s hand again “I didn’t realize I was talking to a celebrity” he smiled

“Far from it” Chezina laughed

The two walked to the front door and the Priest spoke again

“A word of advice” he said “In your Wrestling World these belts are something coveted by many, be careful how you seek them out, don’t go after them for the sake of going after them” he said

“I know, Not Coveting was one of the Ten Commandments, I don’t covet them, I relish the challenge” he smiled

Noah nodded

“The Good Lord asked us not to Covet…but I think Tyler Durden said it better…the things you own wind up owning you, don’t let the belt own you and you’ll be just fine in the end”

Chezina was once again surprised at such a choice of words “Thank you” he said “I feel a lot lighter than I did when I first came in here…speaking of that did anyone come in here before me?”

Noah shook his head

“I heard no footsteps until I heard yours” he said “Why?”

“I saw someone standing on the steps here…someone I’d seen before, he tends to…well the thing is I’m not sure he’s real” Chezina said somewhat embarrassed

Noah smiled

“It sounds like he wanted you here” he said “He sounds real enough to me, maybe he’s just trying to lead you in the right direction, don’t be a stranger here Chezina, you’ll always be welcome here”

“Thank you Father, you have no idea what a comfort that is to me” Chezina said

The two exchanged their goodbyes and Chezina left the church with a smile on his face, he felt lighter and his steps came easier, his smile vanished however when he approached his bike and saw what was waiting there for him.

The cry was rough, guttural, an ugly thing, perched on the handlebars of his bike sat a crow, blacker than black it seemed to watch him with intelligent eyes, it threw back its head and let out another cry as if daring him to come closer, daring Chezina to try and move it from it’s perch, Chezina suppressed a shudder, standing there frozen on the spot he watched the bird watching him.

“What do you want?” he asked the creature

The bird called out again, to Chezina it sounded like mocking laughter

“I’m not afraid of you” Chezina said taking another step forward and then another, the bird gave an angry screech and hoped backwards on its perch, giving ground but not yet willing to give up its perch.

Chezina took another step forward, the bird screeched and backed up another step, Chezina reached out a hand and gripped the handlebar of his bike, the bird lost it’s nerve and took flight angrily screeching with all its might it took off into the bright blue sky, Chezina shivered and picked up his helmet.

He wondered at what he’d just experienced, and just what it could have possibly meant.

--

Samantha Da’Costa moaned in pleasure

Above her the lover she’d brought home for the evening thrust away diligently, he had plenty of youthful energy and spirit but very little imagination, she didn’t have the heart to tell him she was faking her moans.

On the other hand her moans seemed to goad him into fucking her harder, she endured a particular rough thrust that slammed her jaw together for a second, she winced wondering if it was possible for someone to lose a tooth from being fucked too hard.

When the door suddenly slammed open she almost said a silent prayer of thanks, the young man on top of her lost his balance and leaned back too far falling off the bed and hitting the floor with a surprised squawk.

Samantha looked up into the calm eyes of Alexander, laying there on the bed she made no attempt to cover her nakedness, Instead she stretched her arms out over her head, an almost catlike gesture.

“Your father wants to see you…you have ten minutes to get dressed” he said, his tone told her he’d accept no argument, that was Alexander, ever the business man, always with his eye on the prize, she’d tried many time to be that prize he had his eye on, but to her disappointment he’d never so much as let on he acknowledged her advances

On the floor her surprised lover blinked like a deer caught in the headlights

“Get your things and get out…don’t come back” Alexander said dismissing him without even looking at him, the young man made a hasty grab for his clothing and hurried out the door leaving his shirt and one sock behind, he was wise to do so, Alexander was not a man to argue with.

“Well you certainly know how to crash a party, I was just getting warmed up” Samantha said rolling over onto her stomach and looking up at him with a grin “Would you care to finish what he started?” she asked licking her lips.

“You have eight minutes to get ready Miss Da’Costa, if you insist on playing games I assure you I will take you from this house in whatever state of dress you happen to be in when the time is up, I’ll drag you out of here naked if you insist”

Anyone else would have smiled, any of her father's other guards would have happily joined her in bed and they would have met her father an hour late, but Alexander spoke with the emotionless quality of a robot following orders

“And you’d enjoy it wouldn’t you? Grabbing me and moving me against my will?” she grinned up at him

“You have seven minutes”

Heaving a sigh she got up from the bed and strode naked across the floor to her dresser, sitting down in front of it she began to brush out her hair paying his demand no heed, he watched her every step of the way, diligent as ever.

“What does daddy want now? Is he still trying to bully Kevin into coming back home?” she asked as she slowly brushed out her long blond hair “I don’t get him sometimes, he knows how to have fun I’ll give him that, and he knows how to run his business, he’s taught me everything he knows, but even though Kevin’s told him repeatedly he wants no part of the family business father still pursues him…it’s bad business, he looks pathetic” she said as she tied her hair back, standing up she moved to stand in front of Alexander

“And he treats me like a second place prize, it’s starting to piss me off!” she said looking up at her father's right hand man “And you’re starting to piss me off too!” she grumbled going over to her dresser, pulling out a pair of lacy panties she bent over her chair giving Alexander a good long look at what he was missing, then slowly she pulled them up her long legs, turning around she looked at him and was disappointed to see no reaction.

“What are you gay?” she asked incredulously

“You have four minutes Miss Da’Costa” Alexander said folding his arms across his chest

Still in no rush she went over to her dresser and debated over what pants she should wear, deciding on something tight she tossed them onto the bed, retrieving a bra she slowly slid it on.

“What the hell do you get out of working for my father?” she asked “What does he give you?” she asked looking over at him, he might as well have been a stone gargoyle for how still he stood “What does it take to entice a man like you?” she said as she looked for a shirt to wear.

“Two minutes” he replied

Putting a pair of socks on she looked up at him

“What are you afraid of? Are you afraid that I could Entice you?” she smiled “If you give me the chance I could blow your mind” she said “Among other things, all you’d have to do is work for me, you could still work for daddy of course, we wouldn’t want him to be suspicious would we? But you and I both know that Kevin is going to shoot daddy down and he’s going to be forced to hand his empire over to me in the end…you have everything to gain, all you have to do is tell me what you want, tell me what you want and I’ll give it to you”

She held her breath as he looked into her eyes, not moving an inch, was she about to get a response out of him? Finally? What was he going to tell her, the corner of his lip flickered briefly, the ghost of a smile passing over his face, his mouth opened and she leaned forward.

“Your time is up Miss Da’Costa”

Stepping forward he grabbed her by the arm and yanked her to her feet, she could have gone dead weight she supposed, fallen to the ground, but his grip was iron tight and if she went any other direction than the one he was pulling her in she knew he would break her arm…Alexander, a business man first and only God knew what second.

“You’re only delaying the inevitable” she said as she had to move her legs quickly to keep up “The tables are going to turn soon, you can either be on my side when I inherit the fruits of my father's labors, or you can be against me, it’s a simple choice really…think about it” she said as he pulled her through her apartment.

The Chicago air was freezing on her bare legs, she managed to yank a pair of boots from the floor and slip her feet into them while he opened her door and locked it behind them, she’d tested his resolve and she’d lost, the biting cold was her reminder of failure.

But Samantha Da’Costa would not give him the pleasure of seeing her shiver, and in the end she “Would” have him.

Getting into Alexander’s head and finding out what made him tick would be the fun part.

And Samantha knew all about fun.

-Outside Chezina’s Apartment-

-On Air-

It had been awhile since Chezina had found a reporter waiting for him outside of his apartment, but the two men with the SVO logo on their clothes and equipment had braved the tedium an boredom of waiting to come speak with him, getting off his bike Chezina figured they deserved to have their questions answered.

“Mister Rodriguez? Can we have a few words?”

Chezina nodded approaching his front steps

“Of course, what’s on your mind tonight?”

“Well for starts Chezina Rodriguez, you’re already a Tag Team Champion, how does it feel to now have the two best tag teams of the year going after your titles? Do you find the opportunity to face them daunting? Or rewarding?”

“To be honest? Both” Chezina said “Being a champion, holding a prestigious title in SVO, it has been an honor, it would be a tremendous task but it’s one I wouldn’t shy away from, at the same time my match with Xtreme Fusion is the ultimate gamble, we could lose everything we’ve worked so hard to gain this Sunday, Xtreme Fusion didn't hold the belts because it was “Given” to them, they proved their worth to win them and this Sunday we will prove ours beating them.”

“So is your Wrestling career Faith based? Do you lose Faith when you come up against a formidable opponent? I guess the question would be does Xtreme Fusion make you doubt your Faith? Being as formidable opponents as they are?”

“I think you’re confusing “Faith” with “Confidence” Chezina said “But you bring up an interesting question, I am a Religious man, it was touched upon during my conflict with DVD, everyone got a look into my personal life…a closer look than many wanted I’m sure, but the fact is I do have Faith, but it’s not a physical thing that can be taken away from me if I say…lose a match, my confidence can be shaken, I am after all only human, but my Faith? My Faith is strong, and only I can decide what affects my Faith, and I can tell you with no shortage of Confidence that Xtreme Fusion and the actions Xtreme Fusion has taken will never make me doubt my Faith”

“But Has Xtreme Fusion made you doubt your confidence then?” the reporter asked

“Certainly” Chezina said “My confidence is nowhere near as solid as my Faith, Xtreme Fusion in the space of a few minutes challenged me for everything we’ve worked hard to gain, and in the space of a few minutes we could lose it all, that’s not a feeling I want to experience, I’m not fooling myself into thinking I’m immortal, I am prepared to lose a match, every time I go out to the ring I tell myself it could be the last time my flawless record will stand at never been pinned, the tension and the worry makes each win all the sweeter”

Smiling Chezina fished the keys out of his pocket

“Now if you’ll excuse me I need to get some rest, I can’t be confident if I can’t sleep, and I’m going to need all the confidence I can get going into this match with Xtreme Fusion, till then…To all my fans out there…have Faith…I’ll see you all soon”

Going inside and shutting his door behind him Chezina went upstairs, he moved through his apartment without feeling the sting of the loss of Mary’s presence.

He wished Mary well, he wondered where she was, but she wasn’t in his life anymore and he needed to accept that.

Xtreme Fusion would demand his full attention, and he planned on giving Xtreme Fusion one hundred and Ten Percent.
