The beads of sweat hovered over his eyebrows despite lying in the bed with nothing but a pair of briefs on and the temperature only being sixty-eight degrees in the house. The nightmare had lasted for a half hour and had ravished any hopes of going back to sleep. Roscoe looked over at his fiancé who was sound asleep beside him. He watched her chest rise and fall with every breath. He was glad he didn’t wake her up with his nightmare, though she would have been there for him like she always was. If it wasn’t for Jessica he didn’t know how he would make it through the ordeal with his father. He truly didn’t deserve her. He had done some things to her when they were younger and she came back. He has done things to her since they became engaged that she didn’t know about and he didn’t plan on telling her. Roscoe blamed Bobby for that. Bobby put him into those situations. At three twenty-three in the morning Roscoe decided that it was time to treat his future wife better. As much as he wanted to think of ways to treat his wife better the events from the past two weeks plagued his mind. It was after all the reason he was up at the odd hour sweating profusely. His father disappearing was bad enough and then to be named a person of interest was the proverbial icing on the cake. To make matters worse, Roscoe had it set in his mind that One Shot was his shot at redemption to get his World Title back from Jay Wildman. However that plan backfired as he was eliminated and now Samuel Amos is the one with the title shot. The more he thought about it his blood flow increased which meant more sweat. Roscoe needed a drink. He was successful at getting out of the bed without waking Jessica. He went to the kitchen and grabbed a fruit punch Gatorade out of the refrigerator. He drained half the bottle when a thought occurred to him. Roscoe hadn’t heard from Jeremiah in almost two weeks. He made his way to the living room and picked up his cell phone off the coffee table. He punched the speed dial button and waited for an answer. Voicemail. Roscoe chalked the no answer up to it being so late. After all it was almost four o’clock in the morning. Still, it was awkward that he hasn’t heard from his agent. He and Jay usually talk every other day, but he hasn’t heard from the man in almost two weeks. The thought hit him like a crazed bull hitting an amateur matador. Roscoe hasn’t spoken to Jay since the disappearance of his father. Two questions immediately came to mind. Did he disappear as his father did? That was highly unlikely. Jeremiah was a professionally trained fighter and could very well take care of himself. Roscoe just didn’t see someone taking him out like so easily. The second question sent a cold shiver down the man’s spine. Was Jay the cause of my father’s disappearance? The question lingered in his head far longer than he cared for. There was no way that Jay could have been responsible. He was the one responsible for uniting father and son. As though on cue, Roscoe’s cell phone started to vibrate and Jeremiah flashed across the caller ID. “What is wrong Roscoe?!” Jeremiah yelled frantically into the phone before Roscoe had a chance to say hello. “Whoa! Calm down Jay….nothing is wrong. I was just calling to check on you…” Shame replied, but was interrupted. “You mean to tell me that you called me at four o’clock in the morning to check on me? Are you drunk?! Why in the hell would you do such a crazy thing?! I would expect something like this from Bobby, but not from you.” The angry Jeremiah’s voice was louder and harsh. “I understand it is late, but you need to calm the fuck down! And no I’m not drunk! If you can believe it, I was actually checking on you since I haven’t spoken with you in two weeks!” Roscoe fired back, his face painted crimson from anger. Both men fell silent for a short period, “Sorry Roscoe…..I didn’t mean to blow up like that.” Jay broke the silence. “Some things have been going on back in Trinidad and I have had to deal with those issues” he paused, “thank you for checking up on me” he finally finished, his voice filled with regret. Roscoe took a deep breath to calm himself down, “I’m sorry to hear that Jay, is there anything you need me to do?” “No, I should have everything under control. Thanks for the offer. I’ve just been stressed, that is all” a long pause, “is everything okay on your end?” Roscoe spent the next twenty minutes outlining everything that happened to his father, his trip to the police department, and finally ended with is disappointment with the One Shot PPV. He described everything from the interrogation to him being named a person of interest to his nightmare that he had a little while ago. Once he finished his narrative the two men were silent, their breathing the only sound that could be heard. “I’m sorry to hear that Roscoe……have the police got any leads?” was all Jay could find to say. “Not yet.” Another awkward silence fell amongst the two men. Both men were having personal problems and neither one knew what to say to the other. This was obviously unchartered territory for the both of them. “At this point I think it would be wise for you to focus on your match for Sunday and hope that will take your mind off things for a bit,” was the lousy advice Jay offered. “Yeah you are probably right.” The awkwardness was more than both men could handle anymore and the phone call ended. Roscoe thought back to the past to figure out why he deserved what was happening to him. It was useless because that wouldn’t help him figure out his current situation. He checked the clock on the cable box and noticed that it was a little after five. Going back to sleep was out of the question because he was fully awake. Sitting down on the couch, Roscoe stared blankly at the powerless television. Sunday couldn’t come soon enough. |
