The Kid was sleepin’ and ya know he deserved it. He’d been workin’ real hard lately. Tryin’ hard at improvin’ his game. In the last few weeks he’s gone an’ chewed off more than he chew. Takin’ on The Company at their shit. I told ‘im don’t do it, but he wasn’t listenin’. Said it wasn’t right what they were doin’. He said he was gonna go out and stand up for the sVo and their fans, or he was gonna die tryin’. Looks like he’s gonna die tryin’. That bein’ said, The Kid, he got a set’a balls that’d make a silverback jealous. Getting’ his ass kicked week in and week out but that big nasty bastard, Nightmare. I reckon Anderson sent Nightmare out there with the intention of shuttin’ the keep up and keepin’ him outta their bidness. But, somethin’ I don’t think either of ‘em really counted on was the kid havin’ the heart of an idiot. He ain’t gonna stay down. He just don’t have it in ‘im. It’s gonna cost ‘im in the long run, but gotta give ‘im credit where credit’s due not many men gonna keep getting’ up from takin’ beatin’s like that every week. He was a sound sleeper, but even then he stirred. I can hear ‘im talkin’ about ‘is match with Bobby Dean. The arrogant clown ‘e is. Listen to the Kid, thinkin’ a kick to the guts and a DDT gonna be enough ta keep Dean down. I don’t like Dean, don’t like ‘im at all, but I think I’m gonna be needin’ ta tell the Kid he needs more than that ta win, when he wakes up. ‘Sides ya know for sure that if Dean gets in trouble his puppet Sloan gonna get involved and more than likely Shame too. But, hey, if Dean can’t beat the Kid clean. He ain’t got nothin’ to crow about. “Jerry…” says The Kid stirring from his sleep. “Yeh, Kid. What’s up?” I reply. “What are you doing here?” The Kids says as he sits up, wearing the blue and white vertical striped pyjamas that most of us stop wearin’ when we’re twelve. “Just waitin’ for ya?” lying a little bit. Truth is, I been drinkin’ for a while and his place is closer to the bar than mine, so I thought I just crash at his place. But he was sleepin’ and I got thinkin’. “Why are you waiting for me, Jerry?” he asks me full on innocence. He can probably smell the booze on me, but he’s too polite ta call me on it. “Wanted ta make sure ya were right for Showdown.” I continued to lie, well this weren’t much of lie cause the truth I do wanna make sure he’s gonna be right for Showdown. “Oh. Thankyou, Jerry. I’m going to be ok.” I could he the sleep fading from his voice as he got further from slumber. “How you gonna handle Nightmare this week. Ya gonna tell ‘im he’s not nice again?” I asked him. I wasn’t happy with ‘im tryin’ ta do that. Even told ‘im that it weren’t gonna work but he wasn’t gonna listen. Said if ya nice to people they will nice to you. That worked out for ‘im. “I’m not worried about Nightmare, Jerry. He’s a coward and a bully, and he’s not going to do anything to me. If he does, I’m sure that a chairshot will work again.” I roll my eyes, and the Kid sees it. “What? Don’t you think the chair shot is a good idea.” He asks me. “Kid, I saw ya last chair shots. They didn’t work cause ya don’t want to go the whole way with ‘im. Nightmare he’s a monster he ain’t gonna play nice. Ya gotta go the whole way with ‘im. Throw ‘im of the stage like he did to you. Run ‘im over in the car park, belt on him with a chair until he ain’t breathin’. Ya get what I mean, Kid?” I asked him. Truthfully I didn’t think he would really understand. I figure he’ll answer yes, to keep me happy, but I doubt he’ll follow through with any o’ that shit on Showdown should the situation arise. “Yes. Jerry. I understand you.” He answered me they way I know he would. “Jerry?” he had a question I could hear it in ‘is voice. “How do you think I will go against Bobby Dean at Showdown?” He had to ask me a question like that didn’t he? Truthfully, I don’t think he’s got a chance against Dean. Dean’s too crafty, too experienced and he got Sloan and Shame by ‘is side. So even if the Kid gets lucky and gets on top of ‘im they gonna make sure Bobby don’t lose and that’s not even countin’ for Nightmare lurkin’ in the background. I must have been takin’ a while ta answer ‘im because he piped up again. “Jerry, please don’t lie to me. I won’t you to tell me the truth. I’ve lost a couple of matches in a row lately and I don’t want to lose again.” He must have known I was gonna lie to ‘im. “I think ya can get ‘im, Kid.” I lied. “Really?” the lie brought a brightness to eyes, maybe he’d been doubtin’ ‘imself before my lie. “Yeh, Kid. I reckon ya can get ‘im. It ain’t gonna be easy for ya though. Ya gonna have ta wrestle smart and be cagey. Ya can’t even be thinkin’ about none o’that Mexican stuff ya love so much.” I expanded my lie. I had to make ‘im think that he really had a chance. “But, the fans like it when I fly.” He face was bright now. “Flyin’ like dyin’ when a man like Bobby Dean and ‘is friends around. The more you around the ropes the more they can interfere.” Flyin’ like Dyin’ where did I come up with that. But maybe he’ll get my point. “Ok.” And that was all he said. That confused me. “Ok? Whaddya mean ok, Kid?” I hadta ask ‘im. “I mean ok, Jerry. I will try to keep away from the top rope. I really want to beat Beautiful Bobby Dean and if you think that staying off the top rope helps my chances of beating him than I will stay away from the top rope.” He answered me with an answer I wasn’t expecting. “Well done, Kid. Ya finally listenin to me.” I smiled that he’d finally taken in some of my advice for a change. “I always listen to you, Jerry.” He laughs a little like I just said somethin’ stupid. “Right…” I just let that hang in the air and let him take it in. That’s when I begin to wonder he knows I’m lyin to ‘im and he’s just lettin’ me go so I don’t feel bad or somethin’. Either way I can feel the alcohol rollin’ around my head. “Jerry. Thankyou.” I wasn’t expecting that. “What for?” I ask. “Thankyou for making me believe that I can beat Bobby Dean, before you come along tonight. I didn’t think I really had a chance to beat him. I know I had a dream that I beat him with my DDT, but it really was a dream. I thought Bobby was going to be too good for me.” “S’alright, Kid.” I reassured him as best I could when I didn’t believe what I was sayin’. I got up from the chair that I sittin’ on and headin’ for the door. “Where are you going, Jerry?” he asked me like he wanted me to stay. “Home.” I said. Truth was I couldn’t bring myself ta stay when after liftin’ ‘im so much and knowin’ that the crash on Sunday would be so much bigger. “You can stay on the lounge.” He said as I stood paused in the open doorway. “It’s ok, I like my bed. Good luck with Bobby Dean on Sunday.” I said as I walked out the door and shut it behind me. |
