The man walked alongside the wall, his dark-black uniform and hat serving him well in concealing him in darkness from the eyes of any potential prowlers and intruders. It may have been heading deep into night-time but he was wide awake, his mind alert to every sound and as each one reached his ears, he flicked the switch on the torch he carried and shined it in the direction from which it emanated, ready to pounce and take the source down. And there laid the flaw in his overeager system. Salvation and Raven had first seen the beam flicker on when they were about halfway away from the gate that lead into the gated community in which Juliana Torres' house was located. It had been the owl's call once again, as it flew closer to the wall. He moved it from left to right once and then off again. The next time had been when they were relatively closer. This time, however, Raven had no idea what he was aiming the torchlight at. Raven just saw it come on and swish in a full circle like the beam from a lighthouse overlooking the shore. For a moment, Raven saw the man, as the light hit the wall he was patrolling and illuminated him as though he were in a spotlight. He was a tall man but only by average standards, and was still shorter than both Raven and Salvation. He was stocky but still seemed quite quick on his feet. Raven had a feeling that wouldn't be enough to help him tonight, though. Nor would it help the people whom he supposedly guarded on any other night, should someone with particularly dangerous intent come-a-calling. The third time it came on, it was as a result of them. 'Stop.' Salvation's was but a husky whisper to Raven's ears through the darkness. Both of them, in their black clothes were equally concealed. Raven stopped immediately as he heard him. 'Why?' Raven asked, his eyes fixed on the gate. Behind it laid a road leading to Juliana's house....and on either side of them, some distance away, some other expensive looking houses. From this vantage point, Raven could only completely make out the ones further away, and could only see the roof of Juliana's, but it was enough to know it was hers. He had no idea where the guard was. He had been wearing black shoes but seemed to be making no footsteps. He was evidently as light on his feet as he was quick, which was even more surprising given the look of him. Salvation gave no answer but he saw the faintest trace of movement as he seemed to crouch low and pick something up off the floor. Raven assumed them to be tiny rocks and pebbles as Salvation rattled them within his hand and then suddenly stopped up and threw them heavily to the ground around his feet. What are you doing? Raven thought immediately but never got to voice this thought, cut off by what sounded like a distant cough. Following the cough, the like flicked in their direction, bringing Salvation into the guard's view but narrowly missing Raven. 'What're ya doing there?' The guard shouted, stealing Raven's thought and attempting to sound authoritative. 'Just browsing at the houses.' 'Thinkin' of buyin' one, are ya?’ The guard smiled sarcastically. ‘Indeed, I am.’ Salvation’s voice the complete opposite of the guards, one of extreme seriousness. ‘Well, something tells me they’re probably a bit outta ya price range. Now, get outta here before I call the cops.’ Salvation did the opposite and took a few steps forward. The guard unconsciously moved two steps back. ‘Are ya deaf or jus’ stupid? Get the hell out of here.’ ‘A man’s allowed to browse, isn’t he?’ ‘Not here he ain’t. Now I’m givin’ ya one las’ before I call the police.’ ‘Call them then. What do you think they are going to do? Race up here, through the darkness and take me down? You really think they’d get here before I cave your head in with an iron bar for such rudeness.’ ‘That’s it. I warned you.’ The guard immediately turned, his torchlight moving to light the way ahead of him but was greeted with the sudden and surprising sight of Raven. His face was pale in the glow of the torch. Raven had moved around under the cover of darkness from almost the moment it had been turned on to face Salvation. He screamed. ‘Hi,’ Raven said, with a smile. The iron bar flew out of his sleeve. He caught it in his hand and drove it into the side of the man’s thigh. He screamed once again, this time in pain. The torch fell from his hand and landed hard of the floor. The light fizzled out straight away. Raven grabbed him by his blonde hair and pulled him through the darkness, close to him. Raven position his mouth close to the guard’s ear, ‘Be thankful it was me, he would have killed you.’ Raven then dragged him back to his feet and spoke so he could be heard by Salvation now, too. ‘Are there any more of you on duty?’ The guard shook his head - Raven’s eyes had adjusted enough to see as much at close proximity - and shouted with a painful voice, ‘No. Geoff’s wife went into labor. He snuck off.’ ‘And you’re covering for him?’ The guard nodded. ‘Aren’t you a loyal friend. Maybe you can be as loyal and friendly to us.’ ‘I ain’t helpin’ ya rob or get nobody.’ ‘We aren’t here for either of those things.’ ‘Well, what’re ya ‘ere for, then?’ Salvation leant close and smirked. Under the grip of Raven’s hand, Raven felt his head shrink back. ‘We’re here to observe,’ he said. **** The gate slowly opened before them with a minimum creak. Raven stood on the left and Salvation on the right and behind both of them, the guard - whom they had discovered was named Scott - was laid unconscious on the floor of the locked guard booth which operated the gate. He wasn't bleeding but a bruise was clearly visible just beneath his right eye. Raven had no doubt someone would find him before long. 'Now that you're done trying to get arrested, are you going to tell me what your plan is?' Raven asked. 'Like I told the guard, I just want to observe.' 'Observe what?' 'Just exactly the sort of person you have chosen to align yourself with.' He paused and turned his head to Raven. 'Why are you so worried?' Raven turned back with him, matching his intense gaze. 'Because I don't want anything ruining my chances at Showdown.' This particular sentence would go on to make Raven laugh; it was probably thing that would. It did so because during everything that followed, Showdown wasn't important at all and Raven would go as far as to say it means nothing to him. At that moment, however, it was all. 'I'm trying to help you regain your true self so you can win, remember?' Raven remembered Salvation saying this, but apart from dragging him to a graveyard to fight, Raven remained unconvinced. He didn't know where this increasing lack of faith in Salvation - a mentor who Raven respected, trusted and admired - was coming from - the returning illness, perhaps? Either way, it was strong. In his eyes, there was nothing wrong with him and how he had been doing things. 'Let's get this over with,' Raven merely said, ignoring his question. Salvation smirked and followed. **** Standing directly outside of it, the glory of the house hit Raven all at once. Raven could tell, from experience stemming from his father's love for property purchasing, that it was expensive. With windows all over the place, Raven estimated it had about seven or eight bedrooms and almost as many bathrooms. It was exactly the sort of house he would have expected Juliana to live it....and was completely the sort of house he had avoided over the last few years. It was shrouded in darkness, but strangely, as Salvation and Raven walked up towards the front door, they could see a light come on in one of the rooms. 'Seems someone has been expecting us,' Salvation said derisively, and he immediately switched his walk towards the window from which it poured, getting himself into a position he could glance through. Through the window, Raven was instantly hit with confusion. The pain racking his back, stomach and legs was reaching it's tight grip up towards the back of Raven's head, producing a pulsating headache and when his thoughts kicked back in, it made sense. What he had seen was a girl dressed in baby-blue pyjamas with a matching blue mask covering her face. 'I take it that's the famous Lizzie Torres I have seen everywhere?' Raven nodded. Suddenly, Juliana enters the room and smiles at her young sibling as Lizzie plays with her pigtails. 'And that must be the woman of the hour?' 'You know it is.' Raven said, coldly. Salvation fell silent and both men watched as both Torres sisters spoke a little and then suddenly embrace in a tight hug. Their words were faint through the window's glass. Following the hug, Torres goes to walk away but stops as Lizzie grabs her by the hand. 'Tell me a story,' Lizzie says, and Raven can visibly see Torres sigh. Although Raven watched, Salvation viewed the scene going on before them with greater interest as Juliana returned to the bed and sat upon it, as Lizzie excitedly buried herself beneath the covers. 'You can see how much love and devotion and loyalty she holds for her sister. The same can probably be said for La Envidia Mata and even Chris Wrestling. But can you really believe you can expect the same treatment on you. That she won't betray you for her own gains?' 'La Envidia Mata may betray me, but she won't. She's too on the side of good and honesty for that. Her gain is to beat the rest of SVO. She just wants the team to win. That's all she cares about. She doesn't need to betray me for that. I’ll get her that win when we win.' Inside the window Torres began her story to Lizzie with the typical "Once upon a time" opening. 'So she says, but gold and success have a way of corrupting people. Even those that say it's what they're standing against. Should the opportunity present itself, who's to say she - whether it be alone or with her cohorts - won't try and cut your heart out from the back.' Raven flung his head around quickly, his entire face blazing. 'No-one is going to take this win from me.' 'Doesn't mean they aren't going to try. Last week you were the only Corporation member that picked up a win. You seriously think that the rest of The Corporation is happy?' Raven said nothing, merely turned back to watch Juliana continue her story, one he had quickly grasped as a thinly veiled description of The Corporation and their battle with the rest of SVO. 'You used to be so methodical, so careful, so prepared for every eventuality. But, you have just walked into the lion's den, and at the worst possible time,' Salvation continued. 'What would you have done differently then?' 'I would have made my own team with DJ as my first option. With La Envidia Mata as the second, had I thought truly severing the connection between him and Torres at all possible.' Salvation sighed. 'In the past, you would have done the same thing. But, as I keep saying, you have strayed from the path, and she's the main reason you have done so.' 'What are you talking about?' 'You want to know why I brought you here?' Raven didn't say anything, he didn't need to. Salvation already knew that he did. 'Because I wanted you to come face to face with the person responsible for your steady downfall and the reason I have become so disappointed in the man who was once my greatest pupil. She's changed you more than anything or anyone else since coming to the Sanctioned Violence Organization.' Inside the house, Lizzie had fallen asleep and Torres, having stopped her story, was on her way out of Lizzie's bedroom. Outside, Raven turned his back on her completely and stared intensely at Salvation. 'No-one has changed me. You come to me and you preach about what you see but you see nothing.' Salvation matched his gaze and took a few steps towards him. 'I see a man who has no idea who he is anymore. One minute, I see a man who shows me the man I know....The man who was willing to attack DVD on a place. The man who has beaten two guards in as many days. The man who once waged bloody vengeance on those that crossed him and stood in his way. And the next minute I see a man I have never seen before. A man who not only allows La Envidia Mata to talk down on him but continues to be his teammate.' 'Don't!' Raven shouted, his rage building, but Salvation carried on as though he hadn't heard him. 'I see a man who wears clothes from the Juliana clothing line. A man who rescues her little dog from dangerous situations.' Salvation stops directly in front of Raven now, towering over him and staring straight into his eyes. 'I look at this man and I want to spit on him in disgust. You should be the man putting her dog in danger. Her friends in danger. Her sister in danger. And most of all, you should be the one putting her in danger and great amounts of pain.' Raven couldn't take anymore, his fist clenched unconsciously and swung forward, connecting hard with Salvation's right cheek. Salvation staggered back a few paces but was able to maintain his balance. Raven waited for retaliation but got nothing. Salvation merely laughed maniacally, angering Raven further. 'Why don't you listen to me for a change? I know exactly what I am doing. I've known what I've been doing since this whole thing began. I know I made the right choice. I know Juliana Torres won't screw me. I know that if any of her friends try to screw me, they'll pay the consequences. You may not believe it, but I have been careful. I have picked my allies for this company carefully. I...am....in....contr--' Raven never got to finish that sentence as the pain in his stomach returned, worse than ever, and flooded his entire body. There was no hiding it this time. He doubled over and then collapsed completely to the floor. Within minutes the pain intensified and he began to shake uncontrollably. The world around him became a blurred haze, but he could still just about make out the shape of Salvation walk over and stand over him. 'Well, it's about time you stopped hiding the pains!' He said, his voice distant and distorted to Raven's ears. Something black rose above him. It was Salvation's boot, but Raven was in no state to ascertain what anything was now, even Salvation himself was nothing but a black blur. 'As for what you said...Well, we'll just see about that.' Salvation's foot came down hard upon Raven's aching head and darkness prevailed once more in God knows how many times. |
