Nathan Paradine sat in the driver seat of his rented car, a slight feeling of dread creeping over him. He’d been on this “stakeout” for almost twenty-eight hours now, stepping outside only to refresh himself in the public toilets nearby or get more coffee from a convenience store about two hundred meters away. He was in Glendale, California following a late night meeting with Avery after Showdown on Sunday night. Avery had followed through on his promises and had tracked down Nathan’s ex-wife Emily, now living in the house directly opposite his car. He had been trying to build up the courage to step outside and knock on her door but every time he reached for the door handle his resolve failed him; for now, he would wait. He wasn’t even sure that he really wanted this anymore. A week ago, when he’d fiercely declared to Avery that he wanted to speak to her, he had been angry about a number of things, not the least a brewing rivalry with Chris Bond. Even the airline tickets had been on an impulse, using up some of his winnings from the Psyko Stevo tournament. I’ve come too far to back out now, he thought to himself, and wrenched the door open. Every step he took towards the house caused his heart to beat a little faster and he figured it would be just his luck if he died from a heart attack right on Emily’s front steps. He paused outside the door before knocking. “Here goes nothing,” he mumbled softly to himself, before raising his hand and tapping his knuckles three times against the wood. “Just a minute!” he heard a woman shout, and his heart almost stopped in his chest. It was her, there was no mistake about it whatsoever. A sweat instantly broke out on his brow and he nearly turned around and ran away, fleeing the confrontation that was about to come. However the door suddenly swung open and she was standing there, exactly how he remembered her. Blue eyes, brown hair, red lips pursed in surprise. He opened his mouth, and the first words to come tumbling out- “I know about the Company,” Nathan blurted out, speaking the first words that popped into his mind. “I know about Whitechapel, and Blackmore, and Maloney and all my life being nothing more than some experiment and I’ve missed you so, so much… I thought you were dead.” Emily stared in him in surprise, before shaking her head in apparent disbelief. She attempted to slam the door shut, however Nathan stuck his foot out and it jammed several inches away from the frame. “You’re not supposed to be here!” Emily shouted. “You’re not supposed to know! You weren’t supposed to love me, Nathan! Get out!” “Emily…” Nathan murmured quietly. Emily continued attempting to close the door, however Nathan merely stood firm with his foot wedged between the door and the doorframe. “Move your foot!” she hissed. “Or I’ll break it. I swear I will!” “Listen to me,” Nathan said, still speaking quietly. He was amazed at how calm he’d managed to remain. “Just let me in, please. We need to talk.” “There’s nothing for us to talk about,” she replied flatly, however she opened up the door and surveyed him with her hands on her hips. Nathan couldn’t help but grin. “Maybe it wasn’t all an act then, eh?” he said sadly. “You looked just like that when you were angry at me when we were married.” Emily raised her eyebrows and stood back, allow Nathan to step into her house. He took several steps inside and glanced around as Emily closed the door behind him. “Nice house,” he offered as a way to lighten the obvious tension in the air. “Don’t get used to it, you’ll be leaving soon,” was the curt reply from Emily. She led him into a small lounge room, indicating that he should sit down on a leather sofa. Photographs covered the walls of the room and Nathan’s blood boiled when he saw a picture of Emily and Maloney standing shoulder to shoulder with wide smiles on their faces. Remaining composed, he look up at Emily. “So then. You’re not dead.” He didn’t speak in an accusationary tone, however Emily flinched slightly as he finished the sentence. “No, I’m not. And since you know all about The Company now, I’m guessing you know why I’m not dead either.” “Of course.” Nathan knitted his hands together and sighed. “I guess you were working for Maloney, then? Just another example of the false life I’ve been leading for the least twenty five odd years. Maloney wanted to write you out of my life and your little accident at the hands of Xander Daniels was the perfect way to do it.” “Something like that.” Emily sighed and rubbed her neck, almost as if she was re-living the attack in her head. “Nathan, Maloney specifically selected me for the task of being your wife. It wasn’t a job I thought I’d relish and to be honest that’s all I thought of it while we were together… just a job. But when he sent me back to help you last year, I could see that you’d changed. And not for the better.” “I know.” Nathan nodded and glanced down. “I was in a dark place, Emily. Alcohol, pills, I was on a path of self destruction because I just felt so hopeless. But you changed all that for me, you gave me a reason to live whether you intended to or not. I fell in love with you all over again, and then when I thought I’d lost you…” Nathan looked up again. “It was like I was in some kind of living hell. I just wanted it all to end.” Both Nathan and Emily sat in silence for several moments, before Emily spoke again in a small, quiet voice. “I didn’t want you to think I was dead. I thought… I thought it might’ve pushed you over the edge and ruined all of Maloney’s plans. But he knew more about you than I did, Nathan. I was just a silly, stupid girl when I first met you, looking to try and get a foothold in The Company. Maloney was always there guiding me, telling me what to do. He knew you were stronger than that.” Emily sighed. “I was basically nothing more than a channel for what he wanted you to do.” “I know,” Nathan smiled weakly. “But don’t you see? We can put all of that in the past. I don’t care about anything else, Emily. I just want you.” “Nathan… didn’t you listen to what I just said?” Emily asked in disbelief. “I’m not the person you think I am. Maloney tailored me to suit your tastes, so I would be your perfect woman. Our marriage, our divorce, my death… all of it was planned well in advance by him, so you would get to this. The final stage.” Nathan glanced down again so Emily wouldn’t notice the tears forming in his eyes. “So, you never felt anything. Our marriage, going out to dinner, walks through the park, making love… you never felt anything? It was all just a job to you?” “Well, I wouldn’t say that…” Emily trailed off, choosing instead to stare out the window towards the street. Nathan stood up, heaving a great breath as he did so. “Do you love me, Emily?” Nathan asked, desperation in his voice. He looked slightly wild, with his eyes puffy and red, his face unshaven and the thin hair on his head sticking up at odd angles. Emily refused to look at him, even when he grabbed her by the arm gently. “No, Nathan.” She turned around to face him, speaking with finality. “I don’t love you. Everything we shared… it was nothing more than a ruse. I did my job and you’re going to do yours. I’m sorry.” There it was. I’m sorry. Nathan released her arm and back away, shaking his head in denial. He finally looked at Emily again, a small, tortured smile breaking out on his face. “Thank you, Emily. Thank you for telling me the truth,” he choked, before turning and walking out of the room at a brisk pace. He heard a small shout from Emily behind him that he ignored as he slammed the front door shut and stumbled to his car, pulling the driver door open and sliding into the seat. For a moment he sat in silence, before catching a glance at his reflection in the rear view mirror. His face suddenly contorted with rage and he ripped the mirror out of the room, flinging it down onto the passenger seat with a roar of anger. He then flung his left elbow out, slamming it into the window. The glass cracked and Nathan continued driving the joint against it until it shattered. Letting out a howl of pure rage he slammed his fists down onto the dash, the tears now flowing freely. “Why won’t you love me?” he screamed. “Why won’t you love me!?” Nathan wasn’t sure how long he sat there in the car. By the time he moved again the sun was hanging low in the sky and a cold rage had settled into every orifice of his body. Without emotion he started the car and began driving away, knowing that he’d just closed a chapter of his life forever. As for the anger, he knew that choking the life out of Tobias Devereux would make him feel a whole lot better. Oh yes, he was really going to start having some fun. |
