The car's bright yellow headlights cut through the darkness like a razorblade through flesh. The roar of the engine filled the night, drowning out all other sounds. And then it suddenly stopped, the engine was replaced with the screeching of brakes. The tyres leaving skid-marks on the concrete that would be only visible when the first light of dawn streamed over the horizon. Inside the car, both Raven and Salvation's head flew forward and then slammed back against the backs of their respective chairs as the car came to a complete stop. Raven glanced out of the tinted window and saw nothing he recognised. In fact, he saw nothing. He seemed to be in the middle of nowhere. 'Why did you stop?' Raven enquired. Salvation glanced in the overhead mirror at Raven's reflection. 'We can walk from here.' 'To where? First you drag me onto a plane to attack DVD. Then you take me to the Xtreme Wrestling Federation's headquarters to talk about my decision to not join Xtreme Fusion....and I went with you, willingly. The least you can do now is tell me where we are going.' Salvation continued to stare intently into the reflection of Raven's own eyes. 'You'll see soon enough.' 'Well, drive then. I'll see even sooner. I'm getting increasingly tired with your constant need for mystery.' Salvation turned his head and glanced over his shoulder at Raven now. 'Is it making you angry?' Raven said nothing, but the blaze within Raven's eyes said more to Salvation than any amount of words could. He turned back to face ahead and pulled the door handle. The door opened and immediately a flurry of sounds filled their ears. 'That's why I'm doing it.' Salvation exited the vehicle and stood looking up ahead, waiting for Raven to follow. When he hadn't after a few minutes, he lowered his head back into the car. 'Come on. The walk will do you good....and it'll give us a chance to talk some more.' Raven sighed, opened the car door and followed after Salvation who had begun to walk a little way ahead. His hand fell immediately to his chest and then descended lower, to his stomach. He had a feeling the walk wasn't going to be as good for him as Salvation imagined. The journey itself had been long - and now, in Raven's eyes, pointless - indeed, but the walk was even longer. Not only that, but it had been arduous to boot. Raven estimated that they had walked three miles since Salvation requested they leave the car. Any breeze that had been prevalent earlier had since died away, leaving any trees and foliage completely still, and allowing heat to ravage Raven's body. Salvation seemed not to feel its effects however and continued to stride quite a few paces ahead of him. Despite his insistence they could talk some more, not a single word had passed between them.....until now. 'So, you still maintain that you chose the right team for SVO?' Raven glowered at this question. It was the main one he had been expecting and was surprised that it had taken him this long to ask it. 'I made the choice that best fits my ambitions.' 'That doesn't exactly answer my question.' 'It does to me.' Raven retorted, brusquely. Fair enough, Salvation thought, and decided to carry on the conversation rather than press on for what he seemed a true answer. 'What ambitions are you speaking of. To win?' 'Of course.' 'Winning is still your primary goal, then?' Raven's stomach tightened again, making him grimace, but that wasn't the reason he didn't answer. 'I'll take it as a yes.' 'Take it however you want.' Raven answered, surprised at how short and abrupt he was increasingly sounding. 'What makes you think they are the best choice, then?' 'Because they're decent and honest and trustworthy and unlike The Xtreme Fusion you have a guarantee they won't stab the other members in the back in order to further their own gains.' Upon hearing this, Salvation couldn't help but break out into a wide smirk, which looked eerie in the enveloping darkness. 'You know them that well, then, do you?' Salvation stopped and turned to face Raven directly now. 'You know for sure that La Envidia Mata wouldn't screw you over? Or Canadian Perfect Chris Wrestling? Or DJ?' Raven stood still, not reacting, his hand firmly at his side so not to reveal the pain in his stomach. 'Or Juliana Torres?' Raven scowled irritably at the mention of Juliana Torres' name. 'Do you actually trust them?' Raven didn't answer, but realized in that moment that he really didn't know how to answer that after Chris Wrestling eliminated him from the Stevo Invitational. 'I didn't think so. You see, you've been complacent on that front, as well. The old Raven would have researched and researched and sought out every bit of information concerning potential alignments before agreeing to them. But you have just teamed up with them....and on what....faith?' 'I'm not worried about them!' Raven shouted frankly up the empty street. 'I know exactly what I am doing. Salvation marched quickly back to where Raven currently stood and looked down upon him. 'Are you sure about that, because I remain unconvinced? Maybe you should be worried about your supposed team-mates. Did you know that DJ was not on the card last week because La Envidia Mata suspended him for a week?' Raven's eyes grow wide at this piece of information as Salvation continues. 'How about when DJ and La Envidia Mata went at it a couple of weeks ago on Showdown in the backstage area?' Raven already knew of the last point, and so focused on the two former ones, surprised by it but not disturbed, even if they were truth. How could he be, given his past? 'And what about DJ, a man who deems what happened at places like Columbine tolerable.' 'And you don't?' Raven asked, loudly, referring to the darkness that clearly flows between the veins of both men. 'Those were senseless acts of violence, acted out by unstable minds. I can assure you, my mind is stable and every act of violence I participate in has a point and makes all the sense in the world.' Salvation paused for a deep breath, the distant sound of owls twittering could be heard. 'In regards to La Envidia Mata and Chris Wrestling, need I tell you about the long relationships they have shared with Juliana Torres. You really think they will help you win over her or themselves. I have heard from sources that La Envidia Mata will always do what it takes to prove himself and if that means letting you burn, I'm sure he wouldn't hesitate. And need I mention Chris Wrestling any further. The man who openly refused to cooperate with you, and cost you the chance at $10,ooo, and then screw things up at the end. Do these decent people who will do the right thing and provide you the back-up you need?' Raven ignored his question, and immediately presented his own, 'How do you know all this?' Raven felt as though he was asking this question a lot lately. 'Because unlike you, my eyes are open. Salvation turned and began walking back up the street. Raven took the opportunity to clutch his stomach once more. Spasms had been almost constant during that exchange but he believed he had managed to hide it. When it eased off, Raven followed. It was once again a long time before either spoke. It was Salvation who broke the silence and he did so just as the pain from Raven's stomach had extended to his lower back and down both legs, making them feel rubbery beneath him. In the distance, a large and expensive looking house began to appear. 'And what about Juliana Torres? Do you trust her?' Is the question Salvation asked. 'Can we get off the subject of The Corporation?' Raven spoke the words more like an order than a question. 'I told you, whether you believe it or not, I know what I am doing, just like I knew what I was doing when I joined this team, in the first place. They...won't...screw....me?' 'And why not?' 'Because I won't let them if they try!!' Raven snapped, the words spilling out without any prior thought. 'Now, leave the subject alone.' 'Well, I would drop it, but it seems even more appropriate that we talk about them....and her....right now.' Salvation replied. His face was one completely unconvinced of Raven's words. 'Why's that?' Salvation pointed towards the horizon, 'Because that's her house we are heading to.' Raven's eyes grew wide as they glanced once more at the large building looming a little distance ahead of both himself and Salvation. He scowled. What did Salvation have up his sleeve next, he wondered. In the distance, an owl twittered once again. |
