THUD… the office wall shook with sudden force, and a briefcase falls to the floor spilling its contents.

“And where do you think you’re going?”

James Sheppard’s eyes go wide in fear as he squirmed uneasily under the weight of my left forearm against his throat slowly cutting off his breath. My vision is tinged read, I feel as if I’m on fire… burning up.

“Where is she Sheppard… I swear to God if one blonde hair on her head is…”

The words spit out like venom as actual spit splatters the face of the Company’s legal counsel. My eyes narrow on the only person associated with the Company that I can get my hands on at this time. Sheppard begins to gasp for breath as I apply a little more pressure, a bead of sweat runs down his forehead.

“Where… is… she?” I hiss through gritted teeth as I apply a little more pressure after each word.

The color begins to drain from his face as he helplessly claws at my arm.

“Johnny… STOP!”

I was so lost in the moment, lost in the rage that I didn’t notice JD barge into the room closing the distance from the door in one stride and he was on me. I didn’t even realize that his arms were around my neck trying to get me off of Sheppard. Instinct took over. I didn’t snap out of my frenzy until JD was on the ground.

Whirling around seeing my old friend, the closest thing I had to an actual father there on the ground I snap back to reality. Glancing back to the man I had pinned to the wall the glint of my titanium wedding band caught my eye. This man I had pinned to the wall could be a husband… a father… I’d be hurting his family not him.

Releasing my grip James Sheppard slumps against the wall gasping for air as he loosens his expensive crumpled silk tie.

“I’m sorry.” I whisper as I collapse to my knees.

The weight of it all finally sinks in… Paige was gone, and no one knew where she was, not even this piece of shit in front of me. My eyes begin to well up.

I kneel there for what seems like an eternity until I feel JD’s reassuring hand on my shoulder.

“It’s going to be alright Johnny, we got people looking for Love. The police have been notified. We’re going to find her.”

The realization hits me like a smack in the face as I try to fight back the tears.

“It’s not going to do any good JD… the cops aren’t going to do anything much less find anything… you know the type of people we’re dealing with here.”

I certainly knew the type of people we were dealing with and the methods we would need to employ to get Paige back. At this point in time I was willing to do whatever it takes to get my wife back.

“Hmmphhummm.”

James Sheppard straightens his tie.

“You’re a lucky man Mr. Starzano, and I feel pity for you. No court would hold you accountable for what just happened to me here. I do feel bad for what happened to your wife, but those are the chances you take when you get involved with the company… a point that I made sure was crystal clear to your wife when she took the job. Unfortunately you are now connected to the Company due to your association with your wife.”

Sheppard picks up his previously discarded briefcase turning towards the door.

“Now if you will excuse me I must take my leave.”

And with that Sheppard was gone. I stare after him blankly… he was right. I’m now involved in Company business… too bad for them. I think I may have a way to get to them or at least someone that can help me.

JD helps me to my feet and shakily helps me to the nearby couch. Thank God for his help.

“Can I get you anything Johnny? ”

“My wife…” I half heartedly joke.

JD raises his eyebrows at me.

“A diet coke would be great. Thanks’ JD.”

“Be right back, don’t do anything stupid while I’m gone.” JD shoots at me over his shoulder as he exits the office.

Stupid… I certainly hope not. I needed JD out of the room for what I was about to do next. God help me… I hope I’m making the right decision here. I reach into my inside jacket pocket pulling out my cell. I stare at the phone for a moment… it needs to be done. Reluctantly I punch the numbers in.

Ring… Ring… Ring

“Hello... you’ve reached the voicemail of….”

Great… he’s not even there, I patiently listen to the remainder of the message.

“Yeah… Jon… it’s me. I think you need to get down here… your niece… she’s gone missing.”

I didn’t want to raise any eyebrows calling it kidnapping just yet. I close the phone just in time as JD walks back into the office. I push myself up meeting JD at the door.

“I think I’m gonna pass on the diet coke JD… I gotta get out of here. I think I need to be… home.”

After a short good bye I find myself being driven back to the house… the house that Paige and I have shared for the past year and a bit. I made the right decision… I know I did. Jon Page is Paige’s only living relative, besides Amy who I have no idea how to get in contact with. He has every right to know what’s going on.

“$12.80”

The cab sits in the driveway as I stare at the door to our house.

“That’ll be $12.80 buddy.”

I thought I could do this… I thought I could… but I can’t. The thought of spending the night alone in the home that Paige and I built together was making me physically ill.

“Mister… are you all right? ”

“Goodfella’s…” I manage to stammer. “Take me back to the casino… please.”

The driver slid the car into reverse as we backed out of the driveway as I watched our house get smaller as we pulled away. I knew what I needed to do… not that it was the right thing to do… it was what I needed to do. Desperate men do desperate things.
I flipped the cell phone open punching the numbers in. No answering machine this time. It was time to do what was needed. Paige put her life on the line for Night… she believed in him, but would Night be willing to do what it took… would Night be willing to do the same thing for Paige. I know I am… I’m willing to do what it takes to get her back… even if that means making a deal with the devil.

“Moretti… it’s me… I need your help… Dad...”
