Mr. International

It is in the early hours of the morning, but euphoria knows no time. The last forty eight hours have been a whirlwind and sleep has not been an option and won’t be an option for the fast approaching day. The rooftop of the Goodfellas Casino is home to a magnificent view of the Vegas Strip and the city that truly never sleeps. It is up on the rooftop that the celebration is taking place. People live their entire lives trying to find the moment that will define them as a person, but unfortunately that moment never comes. However, it is up on the rooftop of the Goodfellas Casino that Roscoe Shame realizes that his life has finally been given definition.

Living as a nobody for the last eight years of his life has caused Roscoe to nearly give up on himself. Going from having it all to having nothing was something he was not accustomed to and took it hard. Yet, it was his last glimmer of hope for himself that inserted him into his current position. It was something inside of him that said take one last chance and that’s what he did and the winning of the International Championship has given his life value and meaning which marked that day he saw sVo on the internet as his defining moment.

Reaching into the gym bag that rests at his feet, Roscoe pulls out the International Championship belt placing it on his lap. Taking his index finger he writes of his name that is etched into the gold. Reaching the tip of the e in his last name Roscoe peers out into the Vegas skyline where he sees something totally unexpected.

In the cloudless sky appears an outline of himself and most importantly of his daughter. The painted picture is of father and daughter holding hands walking along enjoying the company of each other and forming a bond sure to last an eternity. The laughing and playing is abundant before being interrupted by the cold tone in the little girl’s voice that stops her father in his tracks.

“I never want you to leave my side daddy.”

The imaginary Roscoe bends down and engulfs his daughter in his arms squeezing as tight as he could without hurting the fragile girl.

“Never baby…I will always be here for you.”

A warm gust of air blows away the picture in the sky leaving a humbled Roscoe Shame quietly sobbing. The serene moment allows the vulnerable man to realize that his life is finally becoming something that not only he can be proud of, but his family can also be proud of, especially little Nicole.

Realizing he has years to make up for, the newly crowned champion digs his phone out of his pocket dialing Jessica.

Voicemail.

“Hey it’s me, call back when you get this.”

Hanging up the phone Roscoe walks to the edge of the building closing his eyes as he lets the barely audible wisp of the wind purge himself of the old him. Inevitably thoughts of the upcoming match, a non-title defense against a talented, well established Chris Bond, begin to creep in overshadowing the thoughts of his beautiful daughter and his much improved life.

Beating sVo legend Johnny All Star apparently wasn’t enough for Paige Johnson because now Roscoe is onto his second legend. Chris Bond has proven himself time and time again and is able to beat anybody on the roster. Just last week at Resurrection he beat a revived Nathan Paradine. Despite the success of Chris Bond, Roscoe does not doubt his ability against such great talent. He may be raw, but the quick learning journeyman from Kalamazoo, Michigan is wrestling for pride and respect. Winning the International Championship was the first step, but this is a marathon and round two is the next step to greatness.

The only thing he had to worry about is sVo’s newest acquisition “Beautiful” Bobby Dean. The two men joining together to form The Industry smells like trouble for everyone on the roster especially for Roscoe this week. From the rumors he has heard it seems that a fair match with Bobby Dean around is near impossible. While thinking of the partner Chris Bond will have in his corner a thought dawns on Roscoe. At Resurrection Johnny All Star mentioned the fact that he waned to mentor Roscoe. In order to even the playing field he might just take the man up on his offer.

The ringing of his cell phone snatches Roscoe’s attention from Chris Bond. In a frantic to answer the phone hoping it was her, he drops the phone cracking the caller id screen on the outside. Cursing to himself he picks up the phone flipping it open just in time to answer the call.

“Hello?”

“Hey Roscoe it’s me….you called?” the soft voice sends a chill down his spine.

“Yeah, I was hoping our daughter was available,” he says surprised at himself for it is the first time he referred to Nicole as “our” daughter.

The reference made by Roscoe surprised Jessica as well, “Uh…umm…well she is asleep. She played hard today and knocked out early. Did you want me to pass on a message?”

“No that’s okay I will give her a call tomorrow,” Roscoe pauses taking a long breath to try and formulate what he is about to say next, “How have you been doing?” asking about her for the first time in what seems like a million years.

Obviously taken back by the question Jessica is speechless, a first for her. After several seconds of breathing in the phone she says, “I been doing quite good. Don’t have anything really to complain about,” other than child support he thought to himself.

“I’m happy to hear that,” his voice trails off as his mind starts to take a trip down memory lane. “Do you have a guy friend?” he asks not really wanting to, but he wanted to know if she was seeing someone else.

“Ummm…no, why do you ask?” she asks obviously startled by the question.

“No reason…just wanted to know. Well I got run…tell Nicole I called and that I will call her tomorrow.”

Roscoe hangs up the phone not feeling completely different than usual after talking with Jessica. Maybe it was her voice. It sounded softer and sweeter than it normally did or was he just wishing it did? Their past was not all bad. They had some great times together, but everything changed when Nicole was born and he knows it was his entire fault.

Ever since coming to Las Vegas he has felt himself slowly starting to change as a man and as he has, his feelings for Jessica have started to return. There is one question that plagues his mind everyday; can I win her back? Only time will tell if he can, but for now he must concentrate on something else.

Becoming a better man.
