It had been twenty four hours since the industrial revolution.

For twenty four hours Chris Bond and Bobby Dean could’ve celebrated their reunion, slept with a few high-class hookers, drained the Goodfellas Bar of alcohol then taken those girls back for seconds. That’s how long it took for Nathan Paradine to wake up, and the honeymoon period was officially over.

The Melbourne Mauler is back on the prowl, and this time he’s looking for blood.

---

"Wakey wakey... C'mon Nathan. Open up your eyes."

Not for the first time that week, Nathan Paradine found himself waking up in a hospital bed. Uncannily enough, for a moment he was sure he'd woken up in the same bed. Same white walls, thin cotton blanket and beeping machines keeping track of his blood pressure and heartbeat. Unlike last time however, there was no pain shooting through his ribs, nor a dark blur greeting him as he woke up. Just Avery's grinning, optimistic face peering into his, a small flashlight in his fingers.

"Just relax a moment, Nathan..." he flicked the light on and quickly shone it in each of Nathan's eyes. Apparently satisfied, he leaned back in his chair and tucked the flashlight away inside his medical coat. Linking his fingers together, he waited for Nathan to sit up in bed and make himself comfortable before speaking.

"Once again, welcome back Nathan. You really do love hospitals, don't you? It must be the food that keeps you coming back. If you're hungry, the tray is right over there." He indicated towards Nathan's bedside table, where a plastic tray sat covered with a clean white cloth. "it should all still be hot, so tuck in. You need the nourishment."

Nathan grunted and pulled the cloth off the tray, revealing a spoon, a fork, a knife and an aluminium tray containing a combination of chicken, peas, gravy and carrots. He pulled the tray towards him and stabbed moodily at the lump of chicken, spearing it on the end of his fork and popping it into his mouth. It was like chewing rubber, but he forced it down and continued eating; Avery was right, he needed the nourishment.

"So, what happened to me?" he asked through a mouthful of food. "Last thing I remember is fighting Bond, and then Bobby Dean showed up. After that, it's all just black."

"Well..." Avery sighed. "Do you want the good version, or the bad version?"

"Both. Right now, don't skip anything." Nathan took a mouthful of something that was most definitely not orange juice from a plastic cup and nearly dry heaved.

"Well, you fought Bond and pretty much had him beat. Bobby Dean showed up and revealed that he really was the referee for the match, then proceeded to beat the hell out of you with some assitance from Bond. Then, uh, Bond pinned you and won the match." Avery gulped and crossed his legs. "That's pretty much it."

"Uh-huh. Did I manage to get any shots in before they beat me down?" Nathan chewed on a piece of stringy chicken as he awaited a reply from Avery, his blue eyes shooting a chilling glare.

"Well... No. It was pretty much total domination. But look on the bright side! You can get back to competing right away, and you've been booked in a big match this week. The Psyko Stevo Invitational, that's a great way to get back on top! Then, maybe Maloney will-"

"No." Nathan cut across Avery smoothly. "I know that somehow, Maloney orchestrated everything that happened to be from behind the scenes. He set me up for a fall, and I'm going to find him and get some payback before I do anything else."

"No, Nathan. That is exactly what you will not do." Avery wiggled his finger in front of Nathan's face. "If you see Maloney, do exactly what he says. The more you succeed, the less he has to plot and plan. The less he has to do that, the more time he has to be out in the open. And that means I have more of a chance of catching him. Now, this Battle Royal. Winning this will have a lot of attention thrust on you and that's exactly what Maloney will want. He'll exploit you as much as he possibly can after that, and then I can finally catch him!"

"Am I just a pawn in some kind of game to you?" Nathan asked sullenly. "Why can't you just go out and find him now? I'm assuming you work for some kind of higher power, I'm sure you can track him down."

"Ah, if only it was that simple..." Avery murmured. "Nathan, this is the last step in a very long cycle. I hate using you like this, hate it immensely. But it is what needs to be done to end Maloney. Understand?"

"No, I don't. It's always do this, do that with you people. I think it's time you gave me some answers, answers that Maloney was decidedly tight-lipped about. I ought to know what I'm dealing with here." Nathan folded his arms across his chest and stared a hole into Avery, who shrugged.

"Well, what do you want to know?" he asked.

"Who are you people? What is The Company? Who are you? Who is Maloney?" Nathan fired off questions with speed, with almost a tone of desperation in his voice. Avery leaned back and sighed again.

"Get comfortable, Nathan. This is going to take a while." Avery grinned before speaking again. "The Company is... well, they're people. They're not necessarily good, but they're not evil either. The Company consists of... a few men, I suppose. It has to be!"

"Wait, you mean that you don't even know what The Company is?" Nathan began, but Avery held up a hand to silence him.

"I'm not finished yet! Now, The Company was once quite large, but there was... a schism. Men with different ideas, different ideals... They clashed, and The Company split in to two different groups. Now, the men in charge of The Company were still in control of these groups, even though they'd split. Think of it like this... Two siblings, always fighting for the approval of the parent. The Company is the parent, and the two groups are the siblings. Working against each other for a common cause, while The Company pull the strings." Avery chuckled bitterly. "The two groups are known as Blackmore and Whitechapel. Light and dark, get it? Maloney works for Blackmore, and I work for Whitechapel. You've got two groups, always trying to sabotage each other. If one group decides the other has done something wrong, they send out an agent to apprehend the men responsible."

"So... Maloney has done something wrong?" Nathan asked quietly. Avery nodded solemnly.

"He has indeed... Something very bad. I've been sent to apprehend him and bring him in to be charged by The Company for his actions. But he's a tricky one, he has ways of appearing only when it is convenient to him. In other words... He only appears when he needs to speak to you. That's why you're a pawn, Nathan. You need to draw Maloney out so I can get him." Avery grinned. "There's a whole system Nathan that would take me days to explain. What I've given you is just the barest basics. And once Maloney has been caught, you'll be free. I'll see to it personally that The Company never contacts you again. Alright?"

"Alright..." Nathan trailed off. He played with his fingers for a moment before looking at Avery. "What did Maloney do? Is must have been something pretty awful."

"You have no idea," said Avery quietly. "He manipulated someone, Nathan. He gave them everything, then took it all away. Why? To see what would happen. To see what a man did when he'd lost everything that meant anything at all to him. He thought he could mold the perfect, emotionless agent for Blackmore. Not only am I determined to stop him, I'm determined to prove him wrong. And I need your help to do it. Please Nathan... I'm asking, no, I'm begging you... Please help me do this. Help me stop Maloney."

Nathan stared down at his hands, weighing the decision in his head. He had other things to deal with, things that concerned him more. Finding Bobby Dean and making him a little less "beautiful" courtesy of a fist to the face was at the top of his priority list, followed by choking out Chris Bond with a nice, painful submission hold. However, getting out his cursed contract with The Company was even more enticing now; if he had've known this was waiting for him, he would never have bothered returning to Vegas. He finally grudgingly nodded.

"Fine. I'll help you. As long as you get me out of this damned contract."

"Wonderful! Brilliant! Haha, with you and me working to stop him, Maloney doesn't stand a chance!" Avery grinned again, his constant optimism shining through. "Now, you've got a big match this week. Big match, with a big, big reward. Not only will you get one hundred thousand dollars in cold, hard cash, but we'll more than likely draw Maloney out and end this thing sooner rather than later. All you have to do is take out a few competitors and you've done it!"

"Who are the competitors?" Nathan frowned. "I doubt any of them have been beaten down over the last few days."

"Oh, the usual bunch. Limp. La Envidia Mata. Ronnie Long. Juliana Torres. And Tobias Devereux." Avery recited the names as if he were reading them off a list. "None of them should be any problem, and Tobias just came off a hell of a match against Night-"

"Who won?" Nathan asked sharply. The result of the sVo World Heavyweight Championship match suddenly became important, need-to-know information.

"Uh... Night. Hell of a match, it was. Hell of a match." Avery spoke with distaste, however, implying his own personal thoughts were different. "Night is another problem that another department will solve. For now, our main task in apprehending Maloney. Think you can manage that? Think you can bring back the "hostile" Nathan Paradine again?"

"Oh, I think I can manage that." Nathan examined his knuckles and smirked. "It's taken me a while, but I'm back. Still working out some kinks, but eventually... I've been looking for myself for a long time, Avery. Trying to find focus. I've found it now, and once I've dealt with this Battle Royal and getting Maloney out of my life, I'm going to dish out some of this focus on The Industry."

"Good. I'm glad." Avery smiled. "Now, I'll leave you to it. I'm a busy man, but I'll try to contact you again before Showdown. Stay safe, Nathan."

"I'll do my best," he grunted, as Avery walked out of the hospital room and closed the door behind him. He paused for a moment and let out a breath. He'd almost said too much today; he was determined for Nathan to know the truth, but not all at the same time. Not when they had work to do. It certainly wasn't time to reveal the truth behind Maloney's "experiments" in human nature. He'd experienced enough hardship in his life.

"I'm sorry, Nathan..." he whispered. The time would come, he was sure of it. Nathan would know the truth.

He would learn that he was Maloney's experiment.
