A meeting of the minds. A myriad of noises filtered through Raven's ears and broke through to his consciousness: people shouting and swearing; the roar of engines; and the blaring of car horns. Raven remained lingering between sleep and reality for a few moments before finally allowing his eyelids to lift and embrace the moonlight. Going by his watch, it had been four hours since the days events caught up with him and forced him to pull into a side road a brief rest. A brief rest that turned into a deep sleep, in which he had dreamt of his encounter with Asesino at the cemetery. 'Asesino...Asesino...Asesino!' Raven mumbled unconsciously, barely above his breath, and actually smiled even more so. Asesino wasn't the only one there that day. Raven had just dreamt his way to that part of the memory when a random man had shouted either 'prick' or 'dick' from the next road over where the bars were open for business and mostly packed out already. The shout had dragged him back through the darkness and into reality. His thoughts were frozen on that day, though, on the arrival of the man he had once called mentor. A man who went by the moniker of Salvation. **** Unlike with the sleep in the car, Raven had no idea how long he stood at the grave's edge, simply staring at the man stood a few feet away, seemingly uncaring of the rain and dressed almost identically to himself, but by the time they left, the rain had subsided somewhat and Raven could hear the distant sound of cars approaching somewhere behind him. 'Help me how?' Raven had asked but had received no answer. Not to his question, at any rate. The man ahead of him had simply said, 'Let's take a walk.' And they did. Raven walked slowly towards the man and the closer he got, the feelings that this was impossible, a mirage or hallucination, or that it was some sort of set-up, faded from existence. It was him. Really him. The groans of Asesino carried on the breeze and followed them a little of the way as they set off. Silence prevailed between them as they walked through the slowly receding rain, navigating around graves and tombstones. They were like a dark, gothic version of Ebenezer Scrooge and one of his night-time visitors from A Christmas Carol. Raven glanced up at his mentor. He stood an even six inches above Raven; a veritable powerhouse, especially in comparison. Raven and Salvation had met back in Raven's UXWF days and had single-handedly turned Raven's fortunes in the business around and assisted him in capturing his first ever championship - The UXWF Tag-Team championship. They had been team-mates for many months but Raven tried to remember if this was the first time he had ever seen Salvation out in daylight, which it still essentially was; he didn't think he had. 'It was you sending the notes, wasn't it, Sal?' Raven asked, breaking the silence. Raven saw him wince at this abbreviated version of his name. He hated it. But then nodded nonetheless. 'And it was you who took me to the hospital, as well?' 'Yes. He did quite a number on you.' Raven couldn't be sure, but he thought he detected a note of pleasure in his tone. 'But why? Why now? I haven't heard from you for years. Not even...Not even a note. The last rumor I had heard was that you had died.' Salvation stopped in his tracks and smirked at this. Raven stopped, too. Nothing but graves could seen in every direction. And here the two men stood. In the rain and at the heart of the cemetery. Raven's own heart felt pleased. He had always found these sorts of places peaceful. Salvation took a few deep breathes of the cold air, and then finally turned to him, seemingly pleased with the words he had chosen. 'Because you've lost your way.' Raven felt a surge of anger sweep up like a tidal wave inside but, somehow, managed to restrain it against his mentor. The fight with Asesino had taken quite a bit out of him and he didn't fancy his chances. 'What're you talking about?' 'I'm talking about the decisions you have made. The paths you have taken. None of them were what I wanted or expected of you. And, I'm disappointed.' 'Disappointed? Haven't you been watching? I was one match away from main eventing the Resurrection PPV and fight for the vacant SVO World Heavyweight Championship. I'm the one who is going to become the number one contender to the Las Vegas Championship. I am the King of Hardcore.' 'I have been watching you, every step you've taken, and it is for those reasons you listed that I am disappointed. I directed you towards the Sanctioned Violence Organization to save it from itself; to defeat and destroy the inferior and the trash which dwell there; to teach people the true nature of pain and suffering. Above all else, I directed you towards the Sanctioned Violence Organization to unlock your true self which people seemed intent on banishing from your own soul. But, instead, you have become even more lost.' 'I have been doing each of those things.' 'Then it is you that has clearly not been paying attention.' Salvation turned and began walking again, his own heavy boots matting down the grass as he went. Raven simply stood, staring a hole in his back, feeling the anger running through his veins like poison. 'I never thought I'd ever say this to you, but you don't know what you're talking about.' Salvation stopped once more and seemed to be taking a few more deep breaths. Then, like a bolt from the blue, he wheeled around flew at Raven with such speed Raven would have had barely enough time to blink or flinch - had he been the flinching type. He stopped barely an inch from Raven's face, with only the rain separating them. 'I know exactly what I am talking about. What you did here today, a few moments ago, was the only example of the Raven I remembered and respected,' he said, snarling. 'Since you have entered SVO, you have become complacent. You focus on championships such as the Las Vegas Championship instead of seeking those who wrong you. The old Raven would have utterly decimated Night for bumping into him. You did nothing. When Christopher St. James came out behind you and roll you up, the old Raven would have taken a lead pipe to his skull until there was no blood left to spill. Instead, you let him live. The old Raven didn’t care about winning matches and rankings but about inflicting the maximum amount of pain on the person he was facing.’ He paused, but that’s all it was, a pause. Raven could sense there was more to come and so said nothing, as much as he’d like to. ‘I had you delivered here today and showed you what I did because I wanted to see if there was any trace of the old Raven still in there. And it seems there is, with a little push. I doubt you would have sought such things as vengeance against Asesino without it. You‘ve too much focus on Resurrection.‘ He paused again, this time only briefly. ‘Ironically, however, Asesino is the last person you should be attacking.’ ‘What is it with you and him?’ ‘The question should be what is it with you and him. You aren’t the only one that has caught my interest. He has, too. And do you want to know why? Because he is like you - the true you. Like us. He doesn’t care about championships or money. He cares about pain and purging SVO. Things you used to care about. Things you should still care about.’ ‘He’s nothing but a stooge for the Xtreme Fusion.’ ‘Can you say the same any different about yourself and The Corporation?‘ He didn’t even wait for Raven to respond. ‘Asesino may be a stooge, as you call him, but he still maintains the killer instinct. Still embraces the animal within and the desire to inflict immense amounts of pain. You try to suppress it with pills. Yes, Asesino is lost, also. Weighed down by the inferiors and impure he swears to destroy. Which is why you should be guiding him. You and him shouldn’t be attacking each other in corridors or fighting in cemeteries. You should be luring him from Xtreme Fusion and showing him a true, pure path. You and him should be standing side by side, aligned in the brutal decimation and blood shed of everyone else on the roster. Instead, you have chosen to align against each other and that’s one of the greatest disappointments of them all.’ Voices could suddenly be heard in the distance. It was at that moment, Raven realized that the thunder and lightning had drifted off towards the horizon. ‘I think our time here is running short. I’ve said my piece, what needs to be said at this moment, at least. I have a suspicion that you are still doubtful about what I say--‘ ‘You’ve got that right,‘ Raven said, interrupting, not that Salvation paid it much attention. ‘-but, come with me, and I’ll show you exactly what I’m talking about...and like I said, I can help you find your true path again, and I’ll help you win this Ladder match you care so much about.’ I don’t need help, Raven thought to himself but never allowed the words to be spoken. His eyes were locked on Salvation's outstretched hand. Inexplicable warning bells went off in his mind - ones telling him that something bad was heading this way. Regardless, years of respect and adulation shone through and Raven held out his own hand, shaking his old mentor's firmly. 'You made the right choice,' Salvation said, before suddenly yanking Raven forward. Raven had a moment to glimpse something slip out of Salvation's sleeve. He caught the object in his free hand and immediately drove it against the side of Raven's skull. Raven went down instantly, his arm stood upright like a flagpole above him. Salvation still held onto it firmly. Darkness came almost instantly, but not before Raven had time to hear Salvation speak once more. 'We've got a lot to do and even more people to see,' is what he said. Following that was one solitary thought: why do people keep having to knock me out to take me places? **** Glass smashed from the next road over, followed by more shouts. Raven had no idea what was going on over there but had no desire to go and find out - something also completely unlike him; he loved revelling in the violence and inhumanity of man. But not today. He still had a long way to go and he needed to travel quick if he was to get there before dawn once again came around. Raven turned on the engine; the headlights illuminating the way ahead. He paused for a second longer, thinking, before suddenly shifting the gear and pulling out and quickly driving up the road and out of view. |
