He had been dreaming for three days now.

During that time he had had three visitors, a man in white, a man in blue, and a woman in black. One man meant him harm, one man was trying to help him and one person... one person was supposed to be dead and buried.

Now, it was time to wake up.

---

Beep. Beep. Beep.

It was a sound that Nathan Paradine had heard many times before in his life; the oddly chilling beeps and hums emanating from various devices around his hospital bed, one monitoring his heartbeat, another the fluids in his body. He attempted to sit up and pain instantly shot up through his chest, sending him slumping backwards with a wheeze of breath. A light was directly above his bed, blinding his vision. For the barest second he feared he was looking into heaven... then realised that the afterlife wouldn't hurt this much. It felt like he'd been hit by a car again. He chuckled softly. What were the chances of that happening twice?

"Just sit back, Nathan..." a soft voice muttered next to his ear. "Just relax..."

Nathan attempted to open his eyes, just a crack. He turned his head, neck muscles screaming in protest, to find himself face to face with a pair of blues so deep he felt he could drown in them. Dark hair hung in two sheets, framing a small, pretty face. Nathan's eyes widened.

"Emily?" he gasped hoarsely. "Is... is that you?"

His vision started to blur and he reached an arm out, desperate to touch his beloved just one more time. Light flooded the room once again and he blinked twice. The room returned to a state of normality, with only the machines noisily whirring away. No Emily at all. Nathan sunk his head back down onto the pillow, fighting the urge to sob.

"Well, hello then!" cried a voice unfamiliar to Nathan. He glanced around the small room and noticed a doctor standing several feet away from his bed, a clipboard in his hand. "Nice to see you're finally awake!"

"What?" Nathan murmured. "Where am I? Who are you?"

"You sir, are in a hospital!" the doctor announce, a grin on his face. "Not that it should be a surprise to you, after that bump on the head you took! I'm Doctor Avery, and I must say... You gave me quite a scare!"

"A... scare?" Nathan attempted to sit up in bed, gasping as pain shot through his chest again. "What happened to me? The last thing I remember is... Maloney." Nathan scowled as he remembered what happened at the end of Showdown. Maloney had struck him across the face, and that was the last thing he remembered.

"Maloney?" A shadow passed over Avery's face for a moment, but it disappeared as he grinned again. It seemed permanently stuck to his face. "Who is that? Some Irish fellow?"

"Not exactly..." Nathan muttered. "It's a long story, doc. What day is it, anyway? And what exactly is wrong with me?"

'Well..." Avery paused a moment to consult the clipboard, frowning slightly as he did so. "It is currently Thursday, at exactly... 1:15PM. The weather outside is mild, the hospital lunch is awful and you sir... You were brought in here on Sunday night after suffering a concussion following an assault by this Maloney character, I presume. Since then you've been sinking in an out of consciousness for reasons I cannot properly explain. It could be head trauma, some undiagnosed condition, anything at all! Isn't it fantastic, the intricacies of the unknown!? It's a mystery to solve!"

"Yeah... righto." Nathan shook his head, gingerly testing the muscles in his neck. "What about my chest pain? What is causing that?"

"Umm..." Avery consulted his clipboard again. "You took a kick to the ribs. Nasty shot... Nothing broken thankfully, but you've got some lovely bruises. It'll fade away in a few days though."

"Thankfully," Nathan repeated through gritted teeth. "So, can I get out of here if nothing is wrong with me? 'Cause I have a big match to get ready for... Pay-per-view, thousands of fans," Nathan pauses and grins."And some smarmy asshole who is just waiting for me to knock his teeth down his throat."

"THAT'S WHO YOU ARE!" Avery half shrieks. "Nathan Paradine! The Melbourne Mauler! The Australian Submission Machine! I know you, been a fan for a long time! You're fighting Chris Bond this week, aren't you? Chris Bond, with Bobby Dean as the special referee!"

"Nah, mate. You're mistaken." Nathan chuckles, despite the pain. "Bobby Dean is in my corner, we're gonna give Bondy an ass kicking he'll never forget."

"Um... no." Avery gave Nathan a bemused look. "Bobby Dean is the special referee, the match was changed a day or two ago. Dean went on this big rant, threatening to sue the sVo. He's stupid if he thinks he can win, nobody beats The Company..."

"What did you just say?" asked Nathan sharply. Avery glared at him, the grin gone.

"Nothing. Forget what I said." He turned to leave, but Nathan half-lunged, half stumbled out of bed and grabbed the sleeve of his white medical coat. He pulled it askew slightly, revealing a navy blue suit, a crisp white shirt and a black bow tie underneath.

"Do you know about The Company!?" he whispered urgently. "Please, I must know who they are! You need to tell me what you know!"

"Listen to me, Nathan." Avery pulled his sleeve free and stared at Nathan directly in the face. Eye to eye, man to man. "I can tell you this. The Company is powerful, more powerful than you can possibly imagine. But Maloney is equally as dangerous, which is why you must listen to him. Go back to him, do as he says, and keep quiet. I'm sorry it has to be like this, but there is a wrong that I am trying to right and you're merely a pawn in a deadly game."

"A... A pawn!?" Nathan hissed. "No, Doctor Avery. I am not a pawn. I am not a puppet. I am free to do what I like, when I want to do it-"

"I remember when I used to think like that." Avery smiled sadly. "Nathan, once you sign with The Company, you're with them for life. You're one of us now, whether you want to be or not. You can only ever pretend you are free."

"I'll go public!" Nathan threatened, desperately. "The papers, the media... I'lltell them everything! I'll bring this Company down!"

"No, you won't. The Company is powerful. The stories would never go to print, the news would never go to air. They're rather good at covering themselves up and making their presence known when they want to. Most people probably think that The Company is a gimmick run by the sVo, and believe me... I can assure you that they are very, very real."

Nathan stumbled backwards onto the bed, his face a mask of desperation. He sunk his head down into his hands.

"What can I do?" he half-sobbed. "I never asked for this!"

"I'll tell you what you can do." Avery kneeled down until he was level with Paradine. "You go out there Nathan and you beat Chris Bond. You go out there and you show Maloney that you are no afraid. You go out there and dammit, you claim your independence through your pride and human spirit! That is what you will do, despite Maloney's efforts. He can control you Nathan, but he'll never have you as long as you keep your pride intact. Understand me? The day he breaks your pride is the day he breaks you, and that is the day it all ends."

Nathan peers through his fingers at Avery and nods.

"Listen to Maloney. Do as he says. He wants you to break Chris Bond, so do it. Then, I'll stop him. I'll stop what he is doing and you'll be free Nathan. Do you understand? You must do what he says. Alright?" Avery grabs Nathan by the shoulders and shakes him slightly.

"I understand," Nathan murmurs. "Do you promise me that it will end if I beat Bond?"

"I can't promise anything, Nathan. But I will do everything in my power to make sure that he is stopped." Avery nods and stands up, before making a note on the clipboard. "As soon as you're dressed you may leave. Good luck for your match this weekend Nathan... For both our sakes."

Nathan nods as Avery walks away, out the door and into the hallway. He glances around his room and nods to himself.

"So, I have to beat Bond to get Maloney off my back... Should be easy enough." Nathan rolls his shoulder and grins as the muscles crack. "Time to get to work then, I think. It's time that the old Nathan Paradine made an appearance... the hostile Nathan Paradine!"

End scene.
