I have that feeling in the pit of my stomach again. I have waited patiently all week and done my homework like I should do.... however tonight is the night.... The Teacher sits behind the wheel of an easily forgettable car in the shadows of an alley just off the main street that is filled with sleazy Las Vegas bars and strip clubs. His face is just out of view of anyone who might be walking by, however the Teacher has a good view of one of the strip clubs in particular, the Deja Vu Men's club. The target of my affections this week was a man of the likes I had seen hundreds of times before. This guy was a scum bag, a low life, anyway you wanted to describe him, he didn't amount to much. For whatever reason his life hadn't turned out in a good way, and he for some reason thought he could find the answer to all of his problems at the bottom of the bottle. There was a brief flurry of activity outside the front door of the quiet strip club. The Teacher broke away from his concentration to view the scene, however seeing that the man exiting was not the target, he slumped back into his waiting position in the drivers seat and sat patiently once again. I don't know why people turn to drink to try and solve their problems. I have plenty of problems in my own life, but it never occurred to me that getting wasted would answer any of them. However if destroying his own life was the only crime that Danny Stanberry was guilty of, then I wouldn't have even taken a second look at him. However unluckily for him it wasn't. Danny liked to get a drink, fair enough. The problem was that Danny also like to drive home after a drink, and around this time last year smashed his car into a eighteen year old girl who was walking home from a friends house. She was now in a wheelchair for the rest of her life. Danny had managed to hire a slick lawyer who got him off on a technicality and was now free to destroy the life of anyone else that was unlucky enough to find themselves in his path. The Teacher slowly drummed his fingers on the wheel of the car in anticipation. He always felt like this when staking out a potential pupil, especially on a night where he knew a lesson was going to be taught. The thought that this time tomorrow the world would be a slightly better place warmed the icy blood that pumped through the veins of The Teacher. If hiring a slick lawyer and using the incompetence of the LVPD to escape justice wasn't bad enough, Danny had walked straight out of the courtroom a few months ago and gone right back to his old ways. It wasn't until a month or so ago that I had even come across him. I had been sitting behind the poor girl who Danny had sentenced to life in a wheelchair when she had been eating in a restaurant with her parents. I had overhead her father telling some one about it and witnessed first-hand the looks on all of their faces when they relived the incident and the fact that Danny Stanberry had taken on the justice system, won and then smiled in their faces when he walked out of the courtroom.... Well tonight' Danny wouldn't be smiling any more. The Teacher's hands slid off of the wheel of the car and into his pockets. He had gone all these years and managed to continue with his mission due to one simple fact, he was always prepared. He felt through the items in his jacket pocket and made sure that they were all there. He wasn't prepared to lose his own freedom thanks to a low life scum like Danny Stanberry. I often lay in bed at night and couldn't sleep. At first I thought that maybe it was a nagging feeling of guilt about all my pupils over the years. However after a while it dawned on me that I felt no regret. I lay awake at night because I felt the heavy weight of my mission resting solely on my shoulders. The people didn't have the police to fight for them any more. They had shown that even in the case of Danny Stanberry that they no longer had the power to protect the power and deal out justice to those who did wrong. Everything was down to the likes of me. I lay awake because I thought I was alone on my mission. However it was on nights like these that I knew it was not just me on the lone crusade against evil, I had a higher power guiding my own hand. How else could you explain the fact that I would just happen to get a seat in a restaurant next to the victim's of Danny's D.U.I incident and overhear the charges against the man who I was now waiting for. I didn't believe it was co-incidence, I knew that I had been sent there. It was little signs like this that made me know that I was put here on this earth with a specific skills set to do a specific job. The front door of the gentlemen's club opens up and one of the heavy set bouncers helped Danny Stanberry out of the club. This was something I had seen before on the last few nights I had sat here. Danny's money was all good in the club until he became a problem. Maybe he was a little aggressive towards one of the girls or maybe he had become just a plain nuisance. They had then chosen to kick him out and send him on his way. They didn't care about how he got home or who he hurt on the way, as long as he was back there tomorrow spending his money. It sometimes made me think that I should be paying a little visit to the owners of the club after I was finished with Danny. There ignorance to the problem was no excuse. The Teacher sat in a seemingly catatonic state amongst the shadows as he watched Danny Stanberry stumble into the parking lot of the club before fumbling in his pockets for his car keys. Stopping to take a leak over his own car, Stanberry then opened the car after a few attempts and started up the engine. The Teacher reached out with his own hand and turned the key in the car he was driving. Waiting for Danny to struggle to drive in a straight line out of the car park, narrowly missing the wall around the exit, The Teacher rolled his car forward and settled into a nice slow pace just behind the drunks car. I doubted that Danny was in any kind of state to realise that he was being followed, however I had got this far in life by always being prepared for every eventuality no matter how small, so I wasn't about to get sloppy now. Danny's car snaked its way down the thankfully deserted streets on the same route that it had for the past few nights. The street lights shone and faded over the masked face of the Teacher, spreading a strange effect over the inside of his car as he passed under every street light. Danny went straight through a red light and turned left, and the insides of The Teacher tightened in anticipation as he checked that it was safe, before following Danny down the left turn. I was banking on Danny to make the turning, and when he did, the whole plan began to fall into place. I could feel the higher power on my shoulder helping my actions as my foot hit the gas and my car sped up behind Danny's. He didn't even see it coming as I rammed straight into the back of him. I could only imagine the feeling of shock slowly drain through the alcohol and reach his brain. His first instincts was to hit the breaks.... and then he thought about it for a few more seconds and hit the gas instead. He knew that if he was involved in a car incident and the police were called, then even if it wasn't his fault the police would be called and he would be tested. He would be screwed this time. The Teacher waited for a few seconds as Danny's car sped off down the street in front of him. As Danny picked up a bit of speed The Teacher then also hit the gas and took off after him. I had picked this road for two reasons. One was that it was deserted and no one would see what was about to happen or get injured during it. The second was the large steel barrier further down at the side of the road. The Teacher's car quickly caught up with Danny, however instead of bumping him again this time the Teacher pulled up alongside of Danny, and began to force him off of the road! I looked over at Danny and could see the confusion in his eyes beneath the alcoholic glaze. He struggled to try and fight against being pushed off of the road, before looking across at me. I saw the panic flare up as he saw the mask that was over my face and the realisation that this wasn't any old car accident. Before Danny could do anything about it, The Teacher's car forced him off of the road and he impacted hard with the steel barrier on the side of the road. The car speared straight into it, sending Danny flying through the windscreen and rolling down the road. The Teacher slammed his foot on the breaks, and his own car skidded to a stop right next to the head of Danny. His car was a total right off, and lay smoking in a heap against the barrier which had done its job and played its part in the plan. I could feel the adrenaline flowing through my blood as I quickly stepped out of my car and made my way to Danny's wreck. I reached in and pulled the keys out of the ignition. I didn't want it to go up in flames and alert any authorities before I was finished with him. As I did I looked at the whole in the windscreen that Danny had been ejected through. He hadn't been wearing a seat belt. It wasn't something that I was expecting, but it was his fault and saved me a bit of work, so wasn't something I was too worried about. Danny lay on the cold tarmac in total agony. He could feel the glass from the windscreen all over his body and he struggled to keep the blood from running down his face and into his eyes. His legs were in so much pain he was sure they were broken. He tried to tilt his head up and move, but as he did he froze in fear. He could see the shoes of the man that ran him off of the road slowly approaching. Five Steps... I reach into my pockets again. Four Steps I pull out my trusty pair of black gloves. Three Steps The left one slides onto my hand. Two Steps I pull the right glove on, and I am ready. One Step... “Danny. I wonder if this is how poor Karen Cole felt after you ran her down last year?” Danny said nothing, but I could see his eyes studying the mask on my face. “You put that poor girl in a wheelchair and then didn't even have the decency to admit you were in the wrong. You stopped that poor girl getting the financial help she needed, and you stole her life away from her.” “No wait!” I ignored his pleading and continued. I was on a role. “You did all that, and then went straight back to driving again after however much you drink every night. Well I am here tonight to put a stop to all that, I am here to teach you a lesson.....” Danny's screams pierced through the night as I pulled out the hammer from my coat pocket and went to work on his back. I wondered if Karen Cole had screamed like this when she had been put in that wheelchair by Danny a year ago. The Teacher slammed the hammer into the back of Danny with his masked hand ten or twelve times before suddenly coming to a stop. Danny had put Karen in a wheelchair for the rest of her life, and now that is why I had done to him by smashing his spine into a thousand pieces. I felt the urge to carry on and wipe his miserable existence off of the planet, but I couldn't. The lesson had to fit the crime, and as far as I knew Danny had killed no one. Danny lay screaming in agony as the Teacher slid the hammer smoothly back into the pocket of his leather jacket. Bending down next to Danny so that he would remember his masked face forever, The Teacher delivered his final message to the pupil. “You have been given a second chance at life Danny. I have sentenced you to life imprisonment in a wheelchair just like you did to Karen Cole, however I have spared your life. Make sure you make the most of it, because I will be watching.” I could see the fear and hatred in his eyes as I rose up to my feet and made my way back to my car. I had to get away from the scene because no matter how secluded the area was, the screams of Danny when his spine was shattering must have alerted someone. It would do my mission no good to get caught by the police thanks to a worthless individual like Danny Stanberry. Besides I had to make my way over to a church in Memphis to cast my eye over a potential new pupil tomorrow, and I wanted to be fresh to see exactly who DJ was when he was not wearing his 'Corporation' identity. The Teacher has spoken, Class Dismissed. |
