Psyko Stevo
The Best Around
[ * * * * * * ]
*As the cameras come into focus we see the image of the KDWN radio station in sunny Las Vegas, Nevada. The image fades and we're immediately taken inside the radio station booth where a man in his mid forties is speaking into a mic. Behind the man we see a glowing neon red light that says "On Air".*

Man: Hellooooo Las Vegas, James Varner here with the Varner self help hour. I see our phones are already lighting up with calls, but before we get to any of those let me first introduce a rare treat to you listening. Today we're being joined by the former two time World Heavyweight Champion of the sVo and a self proclaimed motivational expert, Psyko Stevo. Stevo, thanks for pulling up a chair and joining Varner's family today.

*The cameras pan to the side and we see the Psyko One sitting in a chair, a rather smug smile on his face.*

Stevo: Family? It's just you and I here right now.

Varner: Oh no, but that's not the case... you see, each one of my callers is like a member of my family. So in reality, We're both surrounded by thousands of people.

*Stevo looks around the booth with confusion.*

Stevo: Whatever you say... let's take some calls.

*Varner quickly pushes a red button and the "On Air" light is turned off.*

Varner: Hey, that's my line!

Stevo: Fine fine, sorry.

*Varner releases his touch on the red button and smiles as he clears his throat in a respectful manner.*

Varner: Right then, let's take our first call... it's from a woman named Beth in Carson City, Beth, welcome to the James Varner Show.

*We hear some brief clicking noises coming from the phone, but the callers voice finally emerges.*

Beth: James? James Varner? Oh my god, I'm such a big fan of your show, it's really helped me!

Stevo: If it's heped you, why are you calling?

*Varner hits the dump button, cutting Stevo's comments out from the radio publics hearing, as he shoots the Psyko One a glare.*

Varner: Sorry Beth, some technical difficulties. Well, it's always nice to have another fan, what is the nature of your call today?

Beth: Oh, well see... it's my relationship.

Varner: Go on.

Beth: See, my boyfriend and I have been dating for three years now and he still hasn't proposed and it's just got me thinking...

Varner: Well, please do share those thoughts.

*Beth takes a long breath before continuing.*

Beth: Okay, well... our relationship is kind of up and down... one month everything is great, then all of a sudden we break up but a day later we're back together again and we work through things. Next week everything is back to being great, but then everything falls apart again and... it's just so stressful. I mean, when stuff like this happened in college it was natural, but I'm twentyseve, I have a career...

Varner: Well how are other areas of your life? Do you have a good network of friends, tell me about this career.

Beth: I used to have a lot of friends... but now it's really hard to see them because I'm always either going out with Chuck or I'm busy with other things. My job is really important to me, I work in an animal shelter trying to help families who want to adopt pets, it's a great job, I love it.

Varner: I see, no problems with work then... so is Chuck supportative of you when you do want to go out with your friends? Does he give you your space?

Beth: Kind of? I mean that's the problem I guess, he always wants to "give me space". He never wants to come along when I invite him places, he usually just makes plans with his own friends and then we don't talk until the next day...

Varner: What about his friends? Do you ever hang out with them? Are you invited out with the guys every once in awhile?

*Beth pauses and thinks about it for a second.*

Beth: You know, I never really thought about it... but aside from when we first started dating and I met him when he was out with his friends at the bar, no, I haven't really seen or gotten to know any of them since. They never invite me anywhere...

*Stevo clears his throat.*

Stevo: He's obviously cheating on you.

Beth: Wha-what? Do you really think so? Dr. Varner, was that you?

*Varner shoots Stevo another glare*

Varner: No, that wasn't me... that was our "guest", Psyko Stevo.

Beth: Psyko Stevo!? The wrestler!? Oh my God, Chuck is such a huge fan of yours.

Stevo: And your not?

Beth: Well no, I mean of course I am it's just... yea, you're great too.

Stevo: Thank you, always nice to have... another fan.

*Varner clears his throat as Stevo shoots him a mocking glare.*

Varner: Back to the reason you called Beth...

Beth: Do you really think he's cheating on me Dr. Varner?

Varner: No, well I'm not saying he's not... but I'm not saying he is. W-we don't have nearly enough information to come to that conclusion. Beth, I wanted to ask you... have you ever brought up the "future" with Chuck? Have you discussed marriage or kids or anything like that with him?

Beth: Well yea, I bring it up all the time... he just usually tells me not to worry, or he's tired from work and doesn't want to talk about it at that moment.

Varner: I see.... does he know you're calling today?

Beth: Oh no, he'd be so angry if he found out...

*Stevo starts to chime in, but Varner shoots him a disapproving look and Stevo stops.*

Beth: What should I do Dr. Varner? I'm twentyseven years old... I don't want to keep giving away years of my life if they aren't going to go anywhere. Dating was fine when I was in high school, I was used to the break up make up stuff in college... but I just want more out of the relationship these days. Is that too much to ask?

Varner: Well, my advice to you Beth is to really sit down with Chuck and try to work through these problems. Invite him places with your friends and have them ask him questions as well, really find out what his intentions are. You've given him three years of your life, it wouldn't be wise to throw everything away on a whim. At the same time though, now is the time to find out if this is going to go anywhere. It's not too much to ask for committment, but you need to find out how Chuck really feels before making any rash decisions.

Beth: Hmm... thanks Dr. Varner, I'll try that.

*As Varner is about to disconnect the call, Stevo chimes in.*

Stevo: Don't I get to offer my advice?

Varner: I don't think it's really necessary, we already answered the callers question and..

Beth: Hold on Dr. Varner, I would actually like to hear what Stevo thinks.

*Varner grits his teeth and shoots Stevo a precautionary glare.*

Varner: Very well... go ahead Stevo.

*Stevo clears his throat as he leans into the mic.*

Stevo: Beth, you sound like an attractive, intelligent woman. It also sounds like you have a big heart, as your career is something that seems very spiritually rewarding.

Beth: Thank you, it is!

Stevo: Of course, you're welcome, very welcome. Listen to me though, what I'm about to tell you might not be what you WANT to hear, but it will be what you NEED to do.

Beth: O-okay?

Stevo: Beth, I believe that we're all put on this planet for a reason, and I believe that reason is to be the absolute best people we can individually be.

Beth: I agree with you!

Stevo: You do? That's great! I also believe that we can't let obstacles stand in our way. We need to be strong Beth, people like you and me, we're winners. We don't stop for roadblocks, we knock them down.

Beth: Yes, yes I agree with you!

Stevo: With that being said, you need to dump Chuck.

Beth: W-what?

Stevo: Chuck's a loser, he's holding you back.

Beth: Huh?

Varner: That's enough Stevo, we need to move on and...

Beth: No, I want to hear what he has to say!

Stevo: Thank you Beth, the fact of the matter Beth is that you've given Chuck more then enough time to realize he's got a good thing going, and he just can't pick up the hint. It's time for him to go.

Beth: Well...

Stevo: I'm not done. You said it yourself, you'd love to have a guy who doesn't mind going out with your friends every once in awhile... Chuck isn't that guy. Chuck views a night where you want to have fun as an excuse to go out and be an immature idiot. Beth, you only live once, why are you sabotaging your life with a loser like Chuck?

Beth: I mean, I don't think I'm sabotaging my life, it's just...

Stevo: No excuses Beth, you need to come first. You're the most imporatnt thing in your life, no one else comes close. You need to look out for youself and just work towards being the best Beth you can be. Once you've reached that point, you'll find a guy who wants to work with you... Chuck isn't that guy.

*There is a long pause as Stevo and Varner's eyes lock for a second, neither one giving an inch, both smirking, knowing they are each right. Beth finally starts to speak.*

Beth: Dr. Varner, thank you for your advice... but I think Stevo is right.

*Varner's smirk is quickly replaced with a growl as Stevo just nods his head calmly.*

Stevo: I'm sorry Beth, as I said, I know it's not what you wanted to hear.

*Beth starts bawling uncontrollably on the other end of the line.*

Beth: No... you're right, I need to start looking out for myself, I'm just so upset, I've wasted three yeras of my life with... with... a loser!

Stevo: Hey, we all make some mistakes, you have a long time to atone for your mistake, work on yourself and then find a guy who really appreciates you for who you are at your best.

Beth: Y-yea... you're right.

Varner: No Beth, he's not right. Look, as a medical professional I'm trying to tell you that his way of thinking isn't healthy.

Beth: I'm sorry Dr. Varner, I've made up my mind.

Varner: Beth, listen... if you just break everything off without giving it a chance you are going to set up a pattern of quitting. Things not going how you want them to go isn't a sign of weakness, it's a sign that you need to really hunker down and analyze and...

Beth: I'm sorry, I need to call him right now and break up with him... thank you Stevo.

Stevo: Your welcome Beth, stay beautiful.

*The line goes dead and Varner looks at Stevo with disgust.*

Varner: We have to take a commercial break, we'll be right back.

*Varner hits the red button and quickly rises from his chair.*

Varner: What the hell do you think you're doing?

*Stevo rises from his own chair and Varner quickly sits down.*

Stevo: I'm spreading the Message.

Varner: Message, what message?

Stevo: James, it's all about being the best person you can be Varner. It's accepting the fact that there are going to be hard decisions to make, but we have to make them if we want to rise above mediocrity and achieve our TRUE potential.

Varner: What does throwing away a three year long relationship have to do with being the best you can be?

Stevo: That guy was holding her back and you know it.

Varner: Maybe he was, maybe he wasn't, this is a radio talk show it's not our place to decide things like that based on one callers side of the story.

Stevo: Based on her side of the story, I knew what she needed to do. Do you have a problem with the fact that I'm atually able to make decisions rather then be a sympathetic sham of a human being, Dr. Varner?

*Varner slams his fist down on his desk. He starts to rise up, but remains seated as Stevo takes a step towards him in a fighting stance.*

Stevo: Sit right there, shut your mouth and open your ears.

Varner: Who do you think you are?

Stevo: I'm the messanger, Varner. I'm changing the world, I'm making it a better place.

Varner: No you're not, you.... you're destroying this stations ratings by giving horrible advice to people.

Stevo: Listen Varner, I don't care about fans, this isn't a popularity contest to me. I'm not in this for the ratings or the money. I have enough money for ten lifetimes, this is about something more, I'm answering to a higher calling these days.

Varner: You're a god damn lunatic!

Stevo: Am I Varner? You really believe that? Come on, admit it, you knew Chuck was cheating on Beth, you've heard women like her call in a million times and you wish you could have given her the advice I gave her.

*Varner pauses, looking off in the other direction as Stevo smiles.*

Stevo: See, you knew it, but you were afraid to act on it because on the microscopic chance that Chuck was actually a decent guy, you know this station or you, would have been sued.

Varner: I... I don't know about that, I can't be sure.

Stevo: Oh you know all about it James, you know it full well but you just won't admit it.

*The camears pan up and we see a producer flailing his hands around.*

Varner: I need to get back to the show, I'm going to have to ask you to leave though... I can't have you on here...

*Stevo walks over to Varner and looks down at him with disgust.*

Stevo: You disgust me, Varner.

Varner: What?

Stevo: You know the truth, but you're just too afraid to speak it. You're nothing but a false prophet to these people and you should be ashamed of yourself. You're not being the best you can be... you're just a shell of a man.

*Varner's face starts to turn red as Stevo walks away, towards the door leading out of the booth.*

Stevo: That's the difference between you and I, James. We're both smart men, we understand the game, we get it. I'm just not afraid to speak the truth, and that's why I'm a winner. Tell you what James...

*Stevo places his hand on the doorknob, but doesn't open it yet.*

Stevo: You watch me this Sunday night, I'm taking on another guy who gets it... but doesn't have the heart to follow it through all the way. I'm taking on a false prophet just like you, except his game is wrestling, and his name is Kaden Alonzo. You see what happens when someoone who has all the gifts, but doesn't have the heart to put it all on the line steps into the ring with me... you watch, okay?

Varner: Just... just get out of my studio.

Stevo: You'll watch, and then maybe you'll understand... the message.

*The cameras fade to black as Stevo opens the door and exits it, leaving a very red in the face and dejected looking James Varner to finish up his show alone.*
