“I'm kind of tired,” Trenton said as he kicked the curb in front of him. He looked up at his current guardian, sVo superstar Talon, though he did not know that the nice man who had taken care of him the last couple of days was a professional wrestler who had defeated his father, “The Golden One” Travis Williams. The bright Wednesday sun had helped to tan his small body even further.

Talon looked down and smiled at the boy, imagining that Trenton could see his reflection in the shiny sunglasses he was wearing. “Just a little farther, Trenton,” he said, taking the boy's hand again. They had just crossed the street and were now walking down a sidewalk in the middle of Las Vegas. “We're going to be there soon. I promise.”

They were heading to a nearby synagogue. Talon had not told Trenton why, but the truth was that the advertising executive slash professional wrestler needed to find himself. He had already been finding himself recently, during the sVo's world tour and in his return to Las Vegas. Now he sought religious enlightenment... perhaps God would be able to help him.

He had heard stories of God helping people, of God saving the day right on time for these people. Talon had always wanted that.

And what better time than the present?

He was literally fighting Satan this week on Showdown. Why not seek help from the greatest source of good known to mankind?

That seemed to work for Christian Roman, the current Hardcore Champion and the man that both of these top competitors were pursuing. Roman had a love-hate relationship with God, and apparently had been chosen by God as some sort of holy warrior. Vorheez meanwhile had been chosen to fulfill the role of Satan in the absence of the real deal, only this time he was a relatively nicer Satan.

“Is a nice Satan even possible?” Talon mumbled underneath his breath.

“What?” Trenton asked, looking up with those shining hazel eyes, filled with wonder.

“Mm... nothing,” he answered, smiling again, “Let's just keep going, Trenton. We can sit down soon, okay?”

“Kay.”

Talon smiled. Children were always easy to appease, he had found over the last two days with Trenton. He really was a good kid. Talon kind of wanted to spend more time with him, though he knew that he would be bringing him back to the hospital just in time to meet his father, who would be cleared to come home.

Suddenly, his phone rang. Another call from Clarence Wedretti, Talon imagined. He flipped it open without even looking.

“Hello?” he asked into the receiver, dreading the response.

“Yes, sir, it's me,” the voice of his assistant, Brian Snow, came through the receiver.

“Oh, thank the Lord,” Talon said, breathing a sigh of relief, “You have no idea how stressful the last day has been since I emailed the stuff to Clarence.”

“Oh, believe me, I know,” Brian said, and Talon could imagine a disenchanted smirk on the face of the young man on the other end of the phonecall, “When he isn't calling you, he's calling me. Either to ask a question about the running of the charity, critique the way I carry myself on the phone, or to ask me out on a date. He's even weirder than you are, sir.” Talon grinned slightly.

“I'll choose to take that as a complement,” he said, chuckling slightly, “But wait... he really asked you out on a date?” He could hear Brian take a deep sigh on the other end.

“Yesssssss...” he said through what sounded like clenched teeth, “Did you have to higher him? It's really infuriating to be hit on by someone who is technically one of my coworkers, and it isn't even your hot secretary.”

“Yeah, Janet is rather...” Talon said, nodding his head in approval before shaking his head as he looked down at Wyatt, “Nevermind. But yeah... I think you should go for it, Brian.”

“Are you suggesting?” Brian asked the start of the question, not even bothering to ask the rest of the question. They both knew the rest of the question. No point in finishing it, especially with a child next to one half of the conversation.

“Yeah, he did say that he likes being on top,” Talon said, winking to no one in particular, “I think you should try it. Broaden your horizons, as it were.”

“All due respect, sir,” Brian said with that smartassed tone in his voice that Talon had become familiar with, “I would prefer to broaden my horizons with a broad, forgive the word choice. I have no idea what your persuasion is, but now I guess I know why you never slept with Liliana.”

“Pfft. I knew the whole time about her,” Talon said indignantly, “Anyway, any calls? Emails?”

“We-”

“Any emails or calls that aren't from Clarence?” he asked, clicking his tongue after he said it.

“Actually, none from Alex,” Brian said, his voice toned down slightly, “It's been a quiet two days here, really. You got one of those emails from Wyatt, probably another survey for your website.”

“Really,” Talon said, unsurprised. Wyatt only sent him one of those emails every week, asking him about his opponents. “I'll have to check that on the laptop when I get home, throw the kid a bone. Maybe I'll say something controversial and make the kid earn his money.” Talon smiled a twisted little smile as he thought of things to say that would make the young Canadian sweat.

“I'm not going to have to delve into your list of public apologies twice in two weeks, am I?” Brian asked in a tired tone, “I really don't want to have to order the use of another set of cameras in order for you to apologize because you offended half of the internet.”

Talon grinned as he and Trenton crossed another street. They were nearing the synagogue, and the child could tell that his patience was going to pay off. Talon knew this by the way the grip around his index finger relaxed.

“Well, if I do it, I do it with a bang,” Talon said.

“Wouldn't have it any other way, boss,” Brian said on the other end. Talon imagined that there was a smug smirk on the face of his assistant.

“Alright, well, I'm gonna go then,” he said tiredly, “We're almost to the destination. Yeah... later man, have a good one.” He flipped the phone closed and buried it deep in his pocket.

Talon and Trenton rounded the corner and found themselves staring face to face with a horrifying sight: the synagogue burst into flames, panicked people all around it. The firefighting squad had yet to arrive.

In the light of the flames, Talon could see one tall, muscled silhouette that he instantly recognized.

William Vorheez was there, so near to him, and had dared to set flame to a religious structure, that Talon just happened to be going to.

“Trenton, stay here,” he said, patting the child on the back, who happily complied by sitting down against a tree and resting as he picked grass from the ground.

“You!” Talon shouted to Vorheez as he approached, “What the hell is the matter with you?” He stepped aside, dodging a punch from Vorheez, following up with his own that connected to the jaw.

“Get the hell out of here!” he yelled as he grabbed ahold of Vorheez' shirt with his left hand, layng into him with right hooks. Vorheez swung back, but an infuriated Talon would have none of it, as the punches failed to slow him down.

Finally, Vorheez decided that he had had enough of Talon, and kneed him in the gut. As Talon bent over in pain, he looked up and watched as Vorheez stalked off, a cocky grin on his face.

Talon dropped to his knees as Trenton ran over to check on him.

“You okay?” the boy asked, genuinely concerned for the health of his new friend.

“Yeah...” Talon said through gritted teeth, “Yeah, yeah I'm fine. Thank you Trenton.” He stood up as the little boy tried his best to help him rise from the ground. “Let's go get you back to your daddy, Trenton.”

So, Vorheez... he thought to himself as he led the child toward the hospital, You think you wanted to fight me before? You just let the monster out of its cage. You pissed me off, William. Now I'm not even afraid of you. I just want to hurt you. You did this to yourself.

He ground his teeth together as Trenton stepped away for a moment. He had found a bug and decided to poke it with a stick, before following Talon's steps with exaggerated steps of his own.

You did this to yourself. You crossed the line.

He let the anger bottle up inside him as he looked down at Trenton, who had caught up with him. It wasn't the healthiest way of doing things, but it was the way that Talon knew how to do things. Nothing ever changed, and at this point in his life Talon wasn't sure that he wanted them to.

“Hey Trenton... we're almost at the hospital!” he said, throwing on some fake enthusiasm. In truth, he would miss the child that he had been palling around with the last couple of days. “Time to see your dad!”

An excited Trenton ran in front of him, pushing through the dirty glass doors. They swung back, nearly catching Talon in the face, but he was paying attention enough to catch them and strode in confidently.

As he stopped and removed his sunglasses, he scanned the clean hospital waiting room and shivered. The air conditioning was on strong, adding to the feeling of despair that he felt whenever he was in the hospital. He looked to the doors on the other end of the room, where an excited Trenton was hugging his father, Travis Williams.

“Right on time,” Talon said as he walked over to them awkwardly. He caught up to them and opened his mouth to speak, but Williams had other things in mind.

“Nice, Talon,” he said with that shit-eating grin on his face, “Way to be exactly like your little boyfriend. Just consider yourself lucky that not a hair on his head was harmed, or I would spend more time behind bars for what I would do to you!”

Talon stiffened. Irritation from the father, he had expected. Flat-out insults from the ungrateful bastard Travis Williams? He hadn't so much expected that.

“It was in the kid's best interests,” he said coolly, narrowing his eyes and gritting his teeth, “And if you're going to threaten me, why don't you go look over the tapes from a couple weeks ago?”

Turning on his heel and walking away, Talon placed the sunglasses on his face. “Bye, Trenton!” he called back, not turning to look, as he pushed his way out the door.

He walked far, almost the entire way home, before he felt the need to collapse on a sidewalk bench. The entire way, he had been left alone. Not a call from Brian, Clarence, Ross, or even that Chris Bond guy that Talon had been hanging out with backstage recently.

Talon smirked, thinking of the game of one-upsmanship between them. Talon sent Bond a mail-order bride, Bond sent it to someone else, but Talon was still paying for it. Maybe he would anonymously send him a stripper in a cake, but “accidentally” send it to Paige Johnson's office.

I wouldn't do that, if I were you.

Talon looked around wildly, voices coming from nowhere seemingly. “What... who said that?”

When you wish upon a star
Makes no difference who you are
Anything your heart desires
Will come to you

As the song ended, Talon frowned and checked the pulse in his wrist. “No... I don't think I'm going crazy...” he said as he continued to look around him, “Are you... are you like my conscience or something?”

Something like that, the tiny voice said, though this time it felt as though the voice weren't coming from his head. This time, the voice was coming from right next to him. Talon slowly turned, wincing as he opened one eye reluctantly, looking down at the bench.

Standing next to him, as though it were the most normal thing in the world, was a tiny man wearing a purple suit and a smooth black hat. A golden 'D' was pinned to the left breast pocket of his long dress coat.

Talon blinked, very confused and disoriented as he stammered, unable to respond to this latest development. The little man waved and grinned at him.

Hi!

Talon's eyes rolled into the back of his head as he slumped back in the bench, unconscious before he even landed. The little man, a frown on his face, hopped onto Talon's chest and started tugging at his collar.

Hey... come on, wake up!
