"Nathan. Wake up! Wake up!"

"Huh... what?"

"You won, boy! You won!"

I opened my eyes fully, blinking in the bright light. I had been laying on a bed just a moment ago, but now... now, I was sitting in a comfortable chair next to a roaring fire. Or, to be more accurate, I was sitting next to a fire, the gas nozzles which provided the flames cleverly hidden by a few false logs. I pulled my sunglasses off my face, and rubbed my eyes. The psychiatrist was still shaking my knee gently, waking me from my slumber.

"Sorry, Doctor. I must have dozed for a minute."

The shrink nodded, in an understanding matter. He scrawled a few notes down on a clipboard sitting in his lap, before brushing a greying sheaf of hair out of his eyes. As he did this, I drank in the look of the office. Panelled oak walls, the fire, and a wall full of bookshelves, stuffed with various books on psychology, the human mind, and various encyclopedias.

"Now, Nathan, tell me how you are feeling."

I shook my head, on the berge of saying I was feeling fine, there was nothing wrong, when something flashed into my mind. Cody Williams, on his knees, begging me for mercy. I blinked, and the image was gone, however there was a resurgence of guilt in my mind. "I've been having nightmares for the last few weeks, Doc. I haven't been able to sleep much..."

The doctor nods sympathetically, and scribbles down a few more notes. "What do you think brought these nightmare's on, Nathan? Was it a significant event?"

I thought furiously for a moment, back to when these nightmares had started. "A few days ago... the night I took out Cody Williams. Countdown to Violence. The bad dreams started that night."

The dcotor, one of the finest in Las Vegas, nodded to my words. "And what happens in these dreams? Is it a recurring nightmare? Or a different dream every time you sleep?"

I leaned back in the chair, grapsing the soft leather of the arms. "Well, doc, the dreams kinda go like this..."

---

"You won, boy, you won!"

I opened my eyes. I was laying in the middle of a ring, screams of a crowd resonating around me. My body was a shell of pain, but bumps will heal. I attempt to climb to my feet, and suddenly a large title belt is thrust into my arms, almost kncking me back down. As it is, I manage to stay crouched over on my knees. With a groan of pain I lift myself up.

"Nathan! Nathan! Nathan!"

The crowd is chanting my name. Still, I am confused by my surroundings, and even more confused by the gold belt in my arms. Somewhere, I can hear an announcer screaming.

"Here is your NEW sVo World Heavyweight Champion... Nathan Paradine!"

A man grabs my arm and assists me to stand, screaming in my ear all the while. He looks like your typical Vegas gambler, dressed in a maroon suit, dark sunglasses, and with plenty of gold rings on his fingers. His dark hair is oiled smooth, and I can smell his cheap cologne from a mile away. "What did I tell ya, boy!?" he shouts jubiantly in my ear. "I told ya I'd take ya to the top, and I did! You're the new Heavyweight Champion m'boy!"

---

"So, you have been having nightmares about winning this... sVo Championship?"

The doctor was still taking notes on his little clipboard, and I shook my head. "Not about winning the championship, no. The nightmares start later."

"I apologise for interrupting, Nathan. Please continue." The doctor leans back in his chair and motions me to continue.

---

I stagger backstage, still with the Vegas gambler holding me up. He eases me onto a chair, sitting next to the catering table. A flood of wrestlers walk past, all of them congratulating me and clapping me on the back. However, the compliments they give me go in one ear and out the other.

"Good work, Nathan. You deserve this."

"Haha, finally you're the world champion Nathan!"

"Nathan, I can't believe you won! Congratulations man."

I nod, and murmer thanks to my fellow workers. Suddenly, the crowd parts and a man in a wheelchair is shown sitting watching me. His long brown hair is tied back in a ponytail, and years in a wheelchair have turned what was onece solid muscle into fat. I find myself shocked as I look at Cody Williams. He grins and wheels himself forward.

"Hey Nathan, I saw the show. Good match out there."

I simply stare down at him in horror. "What are you doing here!?" I whisper, shocked at his appearance... how did he end up in a wheelchair!? Cody looks around and shrugs.

"I was in the neighbourhood, and decided to drop in and see the show. Some of the old guys heard I was here, and they arranged for me to come backstage for a while."

I still stare at him, shocked by his appearance. He has a full beard grown on his face now, and he is wearing eyeglasses. But still, Cody in a wheelchair is what shocks me the most.

'What are you doing in a wheelchair?" I ask, and instantly I know it was the wrong thing to say. All of the wrestling gasp, and Cody stares at me shocked for moment, before letting out a bitter laugh. Or was it a sob?

"What am I doing in wheelchair? Do you really have to ask me that? I'm like because because of YOU, Nathan!"

"Because of me?" I ask stupidly. I glance around wildly. "Is he being serious?"

The wrestlers murmur amongst themselves, and Cody shakes his head. He turns around and begins to wheel himself away.

"Wait, Cody!" I call out. But he is gone, turning around a corner by the time I break through the huddle of men. One of them, a man in his mid-forties, roughly shoves me. I turn to face him.

"What the hell was that for!?" I ask him angrily. He just stares me down, a furious expression on his face.

"That was really fuckin' low, Nathan. Bad enough you broke his neck, but then you gotta rub it in on the one night he builds up the courage to come to a wrestling show!"

"What-What do you mean?" I ask, confused. A guy from the back of the crowd shouts out an answer.

"As if you don't know, champ. Cody hasn't been to a wrestling event in years. After you snapped his neck, he built up a phobia of wrestling. Couldn't watch it, couldn't even stand to be associated with the wrestlers, or even the fans. His wife left him, took their child with her. The man's been living in a home for the disabled for the last ten years!"

I still stand, shellshocked. I begin to run, in the same direction as I last saw Cody, hoping to catch up with him. I fling my title belt to the ground as I run. It is an uneeded accessory, doing nothing more than weighing me down right now. I sprint around the corner, and glance down a flight of steps before smacking myself in the head and realising Cody would never have gone down there. I turn around wildly, and I see a set of elevator doors closing. I squint my eyes, are barely I see Cody's wheelchair.

"Cody! Wait!" I bellow. I move towards the elevator, however the doors shut. I groan in frustration, and then turn to the stair. I run down, missing three, four steps at a time, hoping to keep up with the elevator. I burst through a door at the bottom of the stairs, and find myself in the arena foyer. I hear a telltale DING!, and the elevator doors open and Cody wheels out, headed for the door.

"Cody! CODY! Wait!"

---

"I'm sorry Nathan, but this doesn't exactly seem like a nightmare..."

The doctor stared at me pensievely, peering over his glasses to see at me clearly. I sighed.

"This isn't the end of the dream, Doc. In fact, I've only just started..."

"Tell me, Nathan. What are your feelings right now?"

"My feelings?" I was puzzled. "Tell me what you mean, exactly."

"Well, Nathan, I believe that these dreams you are having, judging by your rection to Cody in your dreams, and after your match this past Sunday night, that maybe you are feeling an excessive amount of guilt. Guot for what you did to Cody Williams perhaps?"

"Why would I feel guilty about that? I wanted to do that to him! I wanted to break him to pieces, to end his career!" I nearly shouted in frustration.

The doctor chuckled, and wrote more notes down on the damned clipboard. He looked back up at me. "Nathan, here is what I think. My verdict, if you will. You have somehow managed to convince yourself that you want to 'break' Cody, injure him in some way. Whether this is due to past experiences, I have no idea. But at the same time, breaking Cody isn't what you want to do. You have having a severe clash of emotions, and this is being brought on my a feeling of guilt for what you did to Cody a few nights ago."

I shook my head viciously. "No. Doc, just lemme finish telling you about the dream. Please"

The shrink sighed and relented. "Very well, Nathan. Tell me the rest of the dream."

---

"Cody! CODY! Wait!"

Cody stops wheeling himself along and turns around. I come reeling to a halt, puffing and panting. Cody realises who it is and snorts in disgust.

'Get the fuck away from me, Paradine."

Cody turns to continue wheeling away, but I grab the back of the chair. I wrench him around to face me. "Cody, I'm sorry for what I did. I'm sorry!"

Cody just stares for a minute, and then beins to laugh. "Sorry? YOU'RE SORRY!? Nathan, my life is GONE because of you! What for? All for the sake of a silly grudge from years ago!?"

I shake my head, tears falling from my own eyes as I admit my shame. "Cody, no, please, I never meant... I just wanted to beat you fairly-"

"Well, you broke my neck, and now you'll never ever get that fuckin' chance will you!" Cody soun around, and began to wheel himself away again. I didn't bother to run after him. There was nothing to say. I stared absently at the ground.

---

"Is that all Nathan?"

"Yep, Doc. That's the end of the dream.":

The docotr sighs and sits the clipboard down. "Nathan, it dioes seem to me like you are feeling an immense amount of guilt here. Perhaps these dreams are recurring because you injured Cody Williams?"

"What do you mean?"

"I mean, Nathan, that these dreams are happening becauseyou injured Cody Williams. You also mentioned that-"

Here, the doctor checked the notes he had been writing down.

"That you wanted to beat Cody Williams fairly. You didn't do that. You injured him again, Nathan."

"So what, you're saying that I need to fight Cody and beat him fairly to stop the cursed dreams from my mind?"

"Not beat him. But, I think that there needs to be a clean victor between the two of you. Perhaps you could have a rematch, where-"

"Never." I spoke the word with a quiet venom, cutting through the shrinks words. I stood up, ready to leave. "Thank you Doctor, but I don't think this therapy is for me. I don't need to beat Cody Williams. These dreams will be gone in a few days, I'm sure."

The doctor stood up as well. "Nathan, you can't leave, we sould really talk about-"

"You don't seem to understand!" I roared. "I have BEATEN Cody Williams! I am BETTER than he will ever be! I don't care about his broken neck, or his family, or his damned handicapped life! I just want the dreams to STOP!"

I turned, and al but fled for the room. I heard the shouts of the psychiatrist, calling me back, but I paid no attention as I stepped out into the bright Vegas sunshine.
