This journey has lasted what seems like a lifetime.

As I trudge through the dense forest I have plenty of time to reflect on my journey. Since that disastrous day, my day of great defeat, I have travelled and fought. I have suffered painful defeats and sweet victories.

“Night!”

In the distance I catch sight of a towering spire. It resembles bamboo but I know it is made of the most solid of stone. I know this because I assisted in its construction.

This thought passes through my mind only briefly. Although it registers that this shouldn’t be possible, in dreams, this works perfectly.

“Help me!”

Wearily I will my legs to continue, contenting myself with each foot’s overlap of the other. I think to myself of the black knight and the diamond man who had first challenged me on that day. It was my lack of focus that was my own undoing and I suffered two defeats that night. First, the black knight had defeated me – he claimed my kingdom as his prize.

And then I suffered my first loss at the foot of the mountain. That unscaleable mountain...

I find myself lost in its thought and it takes a moment to regain focus on my journey and find my legs on autopilot.

“Night!”

Thoughts of Isaac White creep to mind; the one man who had truly been able to torment me in both my waking life as well as in my dreams. It was he who had halted my sleeping, ending my dreams, and as a result my sleep, nightly by stabbing my through the heart. When all was said and done he tried to wash his hands of me and just walk away.

That didn’t work for me.

“Help me!”

It was as if I were consumed, obsessed with extracting my revenge from Isaac. In my dreams I hunted him wherever he ran, in the waking world I chased him until he accepted my challenge.

“Night!”

And when the dust cleared it was I who was left standing.

I think of the battle.

The chessboard, the giant-headless soccer players. The structure.

Sometimes the line between dreams and waking is hard to draw.

“Help me!”

We had been victorious there, and these moments of glory will live forever in my dreams and memory. But for now, I am tired and my thoughts all draw towards the castle at the base of the quickly approaching spire. Of home... even an unfinished home. After doing all I have done and seeing all I have seen I long for stability – if only for a while.

“Night!”

I think of my mentor. My trainer... Akira Kimura. Now my... manager? I’m not sure; did we ever really speak about it? He just kind of showed up.

And now...
“Help me!”

... he’s asking for my help.

Ahead of me the path vanishes into darkness as the surrounding trees becoming rapidly denser. Too weary to hesitate, I stagger forwards. I squint my eyes as they adjust to the now darker conditions.

As my vision adjusts, I notice that the trees around me are no longer visible, there is only dark in their place. However, the path ahead of me remains dimly visible; as if it were floating in a void and I struggle to remind myself of this. A shadow emerges onto the path ahead of me and from it materializes a man.

“Night!”

Master?

“Help me!”

It’s him!

Master Kimura catches sight of something on the ground and he turns, running at full speed.

“Master Kimura,” I call out after him, “Are you alright?”

His flight is answer enough for me and I start after him as quickly as I can. He darts off away from me and doesn’t hesitate to go to the far right as the path unexpectedly splits into five, all veering off in different directions. The question of where the other paths lead doesn’t even come to mind as I chase after Master Kimura.

“Master Kimura!” I call out again to him.

“Do not stop running,” comes his eerily calm reply, “They’re after me!”

Who is?

“They’re everywhere!” He snaps back at me, “Just keep running.”

Without warning a bright light blinds me and again I stand dazed and confused as I wait for my eyes to adjust. As they do, I notice that the sun is now shining brightly in the sky above us.

We are in a clearing.

A field.

Ahead of us now stands the great castle.

I breathe a sigh of relief as I catch sight of home and quicken my pace to a run... only to find myself flying head over heel, sprawling to the ground. I stand and dust myself off and immediately begin looking around for my assailant. Hovering just above the ground near my foot I catch sight of a red beam.

Gingerly I tap the beam with my foot and am surprised to find that it is solid. In a flash the beam is gone, retracted. I whip my head around and catch sight of a man in a tuxedo hiding in the trees.

I know how this works, no matter how weary or battered I am, I can not turn down a challenge. I start towards the man in the tuxedo and he smiles at me confidently. Breaking into a run I am very confused as he continues to still just stand there, perfectly still.

‘THUNK!’

OW!

Rubbing a spot on my forehead gently I stoop to the ground and find a medium sized, but thick, hard cover bible.

Not quite sure what to make of the bible I scan around me from left to right and soon find a man I black robes with a straight white collar wrapped around his neck.

As one, the two advance towards me, each coming to a stop several feet in front of me. Beyond them I catch sight of the castle... of home, and it is all I can think of. In no mood for this type of confrontation right now I try to walk past them, but even without moving, they seem to be able to block me regardless of what I do. I shift left and without visibly moving, they both manage to somehow slide and block me. I shift right, and the same thing happens. I dart back to the left and again they block me easily.

With one final dash I try to charge straight through the middle of them and they manage to push me back without effort, causing me to tumble to the ground. Standing, I dust myself off and once again survey the two men standing before me, and my trophy beyond.

So close to home...

... but so far away.

I steel myself for the upcoming clash.

Nearly home.
