The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world that he didn’t exist. --Kevin Spacey as Verbal Kint in The Usual Suspects Fade in to a previous time. Trees. Hundreds upon hundreds of trees. The colors on the leaves range from still green to beautiful reds and oranges. And we step into the past. Two figures step onto the screen, a young boy and an older man. They both are carrying guns, dressed in the most modern hunting wear of the day. Trailing behind them, completely silently, are two gray dachshunds. The older man signals for the boy to be quiet by pressing his finger to his lips, and then points for the boy to go to the right. The boy, wide eyed, nods and begins walking through the wilderness. Each dog follows their master, with one walking with the boy and one walking with the older man. The older man walks further into the forest and sees a large tree where he can make his hunter’s nest. He walks over to the tree, feeling it for sturdiness. The man then hears a sound in the distance, the sound of “something” coming through the leaves upon the ground. Freeze. Everything stops. Meet Arthur. My father. I believe this is the best memory I have of us together. It's a shame because its a memory I long repressed into the back of my head. He always wanted me to be a fine upstanding human being, at least that’s what I thought he wanted at the time. The chuckle comes and fades, and as it fades, the scene picks up once again. Arthur turns his upper body around the tree, and there he sees a large buck. The deer’s headpiece is magnificent, and the body is easily one of the biggest Arthur has ever hunted. He raises the gun to draw a sight on the unknowing animal. He looks down the barrel of the gun, his finger playing with the trigger gently. Cut to the young boy. He is running recklessly through the forest, but making every attempt to stay quiet. His rifle is carried facing towards the ground, as his dog runs along beside him. The boy crouches behind a large rock, and then waits. Silently. His dog waits across from him, sitting underneath a tree. The dog turns his head at the boy, looking curiously. And once again, everything stops. I, too, was once a boy. A normal human boy. This is Drew Carrig at the tender age of ten. It was my first time going hunting with my father and nothing could’ve made me any happier. My father was older than my classmates’ fathers were, but he said he always felt like a twenty-year-old whenever he went hunting. The scene continues... Young Drew looks curiously at the dog. The dog then turns its head to the normal position. Now Drew Carrig is the one with his head cocked to one side. They simply sit, staring at one another for only a moment. And then something happens. A very strange occurrence, that some may debate if it truly happened to this day. The dog spoke to Drew Carrig. You are afraid. You will always be afraid. Afraid of walking into territory that even though you know you belong in, are afraid to travel into. You, Drew, are afraid. Aren’t you? Drew’s eyes grow large. A look of fear crosses his face. Drew Carrig looks around himself, unsure of what to do. This is the first time I ever knew I was different. I wasn’t sure how, or why, but I knew I was. This dog, it spoke to me. It told me I was afraid. And then it gave me the answer I was looking for. The only way you will ever find yourself, Drew, is to cross into the territory you’re afraid of. I am your gateway, Drew. Kill me. Kill me, and free yourself. Young Drew looks at his gun. He runs down the barrel of the rifle with his finger. He then raises the rifle upwards and points it towards his dog. Tears begin to run down the face of Drew, his hands shake uncontrollably, he swallows his fear. The dog simply looks at Carrig, seemingly confused. Cut back to Arthur, his body bent around the bend in the tree, his gun pointed towards the large buck. And then the crack of a gunshot. The buck hears the shot and takes off running. Arthur looks up, surprised. He begins to walk in the direction of the sound. He walks closer and closer towards the sound, until he finally sees something that scarred Arthur for the rest of his days. The dog wanted me to kill him. The dog asked me to kill him. I only carried out what he said to do in order to free myself. And as I saw blood burst from the face of that dirty mutt, my tears dried almost instantly. And it was then I realized that my difference was my power. That, in being different, I was free. That was my first bath in blood. And so help me, it would not be my last. Arthur walks closer and sees his young son standing over the dead body of his dog. Drew reaches down and smears of the blood off of the dog and onto his own face. Arthur takes some steps away and looks down at his young son. His son for which he had so many hopes and dreams. And in a single instant, every hope and dream shattered into a never-ending nightmare. YOU ARE NO SON OF MINE, YOU ARE PURE EVIL!!!!! Arthur looks with both fear and pity at his son. Drew looks with both fear and pride at the dog. And the dog, his eyes glazed over, looks at nothing. He looks at black. And we too are left with what the innocent dog, a victim of chance and madness, is left with. Nothing. Steven Steele is very astute. It's not surprising really. Our rivalry has spanned three promotions and four years so I expect nothing less than for him to finally pick up on the "true" Drew Carrig. Yes, as Steven said the SVO has yet to even see the "real" Drew Carrig. Drew Carrig sighs. His voice becomes solemn. I have always known exactly what I am. I know it, because my father told me so one cold October day a very long time ago. For nearly twenty-five years I’ve known that. Steele, pointing that out to everyone that in truth I was a terrible husband and father merely brings that to the surface. I never said I was however. I knew that I never gave to them what they gave to me. I know this...because of Stacie and Kerry, this deep hatred that sat within me sat and took a back-burner. If anything, Stacie and Kerry were the catalyst for me being..."normal." However with them gone, there is nobody that can hold me back. Drew Carrig's voice becomes boastful and he chuckles. Yes you are correct about another thing Steven, I have never meant to save a single soul. When I spoke of cleansing the SVO, I was lying and you knew that. In truth, all I have ever meant to do here, in the SVO, is to extract my undying vengeance over and over again. Some may ask when my hatred will stop. Drew chuckles even harder. It will stop once my own pain stops. And this pain has been burning inside me for nearly twenty years. This pain has ignited my soul for what seems like countless nights. This pain may never stop. So that is when my hatred will end. Never. Not until one brave soul marches into the fires of hell that I burn, and drives his sword through my heart. Then it will stop. When I am dead. Drew Carrig stops being boastful and becomes dead serious. So far I've spoke of cleansing and taking out the SVO and so far my voice has gone un-noticed. Four men have walked onto the gallows and all four men have been beheaded, to speak metaphorically. Steven Steele you are next to walk and face the high court. You can speak of Cain and Able, hell you can speak about GOD and it doesn't make a damn bit of difference to me. When you face me Sunday, you will not speak to anybody because I am going to make my statement for the entire SVO to see and you Steven...you will become finest work of art. Drew Carrig's face enters the screen and he brings his thumb, index and middle fingers up to his mouth. He smiles. A sick, twisted smile. Steven before I leave you to ponder your existence for the next few days, I want to leave you with a little statement. It's a statement that I feel is very fitting of your little rivalry with me for the past four years: You’re only a few steps behind him. And then everything changes. You’re all within merely an arms reach of the thing you’ve been after for so long, and then? Drew blows a breath of air through his fingers, and pulls his hand away from his mouth. And suddenly everything goes away. Then he’s gone. |
