Psyko Stevo
The Best Around
[ * * * * * * ]
*As the cameras come into focus we pick up where we left off. Psyko Stevo is exiting Cindy's apartment complex, cell phone in hand. He has a look of dejection on his face as he speaks into the phone.*

Stevo: All right Chazz, what's going on that is so important?

*There is a pause on the other end of the line.*

Chazz: Is this a bad time Stevo? You sound absolutely worn out.

*Another pause.*

Chazz: Stevo?

Stevo: *Taking a deep breath*. No Chazz, it's okay. Everything is going to be okay, just a lot on my plate right now.

Chazz: Well come on, let's talk about it.

*Stevo stops at an intersection and looks both ways before starting to cross the street.*

Stevo: I don't have time to talk about it, I need to focus on what's in front of me... and right now, that's Howie Banks.

Chazz: Banks, yes. Yes, you do need to focus on Howie Banks.

Stevo: So what's the news from his camp?

Chazz: Apparently he's been acting like a complete dickhole ever since he signed on with JD James and Gunner Lang and won half the tag team titles.

*Stevo stops in the middle of a park and takes a deep breath.*

Stevo: I had a feeling that was going to happen.

Chazz: You did?

Stevo: Howie's always let success rush to his head, it's one of his trademark faults.

Chazz: What do you mean?

Stevo: Every time he wins a big match, he just gets this huge head on his shoulders and starts to think that he's better then everyone else. I remember him firing his best friend, he kicked his wife out of his house, he talks down to kids, he underestimates his opponents... it's just part of his psyche I suppose.

*Stevo notices a couple across the park who are fighting. He starts to get closer to them as Chazz continues to speak.*

Chazz: Well some people react to success in different ways. Look at you, you pretty much beat the hell out of yourself after a big win because you know it puts a bigger bullseye on your back. Someone like Howie doesn't see things that way.

Stevo: I kind of envy that about him...

Chazz: What?

Stevo: Just not caring about stuff like marketing or public image. Just living each week like it could be your last... wrestling every match without a care in the world aside from attaining victory. Howie is special because he doesn't care about public perception. If he doesn't feel good one day, he'll take it out on a kid... that's just the way he is, he wears his heart on his sleeve.

Chazz: But isn't that kind of how you act?

*Stevo stops in his tracks as the couple in front of him continues to argue. He's about fifteen feet away from them and they haven't noticed he is there. The woman is lacing into the man pretty good.*

Stevo: No, it's not how I act.

Chazz: What are you saying, Stevo?

*Stevo continues to watch the couple fight, but turns his back on them, looking up at the morning sky.*

Stevo: It's just... it's too much to take sometimes, Chazz.

Chazz: What is too much to take?

Stevo: All of this, this, this facade I have to put on from week to week because I'm some kind of posterboy for wrestling.

Chazz: I thought you liked being top dog though...

*Stevo looks as though he's about to lose it, he raises his voice and the couple who is fighting look his way before resuming their arguement.*

Stevo: I don't know anymore Chazz... I just have so many things pulling at me from different directions. I feel like a ball of fucking yarn, and everyone wants a piece of the string... well you know, it was okay when I was younger and only wrestling was tugging, because every couple of months I would take a week or two off and just re-roll myself bak up. But the years go on, and more and more people start to tug, and I'm starting to unravel in so many directions that I just don't know if I'm going to be able to put myself together this time.

Chazz: Buddy, you're scaring me. Take a deep breath, you have everything that anyone in the world could want... what is bothering you?

Stevo: There's the wrestling... there's always been the westling though, that's the easy part. Then you got the kid though... and I was doing well, but then the world tour hit and all of a sudden I don't get to see the kid... then I meet a girl, and she's asking me for more then I can give, all that time you have Jeeves and the rest of the staff worrying about you... then you have the marketers, and you have Mike Polowy and the rest of the sVo management, and you have the fans, the fans always want so much, and you have the random fucking people you meet on the street, and the autograph seekers, and the memoribillia people and the papparazzi... it's like I have a camera on me twenty four hours a god damn day... I'm losing it Chazz!

*There is a long pause on Chazz's end of the phone as he tries to process everything Stevo has told him.*

Chazz: Step away from the ledge buddy, everything is gonna be okay. World Tour is going to wrap up in a couple weeks, summer vacation is going to hit for Jamal and he'll be able to spend tons of time with you. Girls come and girls go, nothing to be worried about. Mike Polowy is Mike Polowy and you know what you're getting there. It's gonna be okay, just trust me.

*Stevo walks over to a tree and punches it as hard as he can with his right fist.*

Stevo: No... no it's not. Dammit!

*Stevo hits the tree again and blood stats to run down his fist.*

Chazz: Calm down! What's the biggest thing that is troubling you?

*The man and the woman who are fighting in the distances voice can suddenly be heard, as their conversation has become quite animated. Stevo spins around and starts to walk closer.*

Stevo: Hold on one second Chazz...

*Stevo moves the phone away from his ear and we clearly hear thet couple fighting.*

Man: What the hell are you talking about?

Woman: You know what I'm talking about, you're never there for me! You're never there for your son!

*The man gets highly agitated over this comment and his hands start flaining all over the place, he still maintains a bit of distance from the woman though.*

Man: I've always put you and our boy Jimmy first, what are you talking about!? How could you say that I haven't always taken care of the two of you before I took care of myself?

Woman: Please, just last weekend you were out drinking with your stupid work friends. Out till all hours of the night, doing God knows what. Then tonight, you come home from work hours after you say you'll be home, dinner is already cold, your son is already in bed... what do you have to say about that!?

Man: You told me I could go out last weekend, you told me to drink as much as I wanted and to have a good time! Last night? You want to know what I was doing last night? I was working my ass off to provide for my family.

Woman: Well how am I supposed to know you were working, you didn't even call!

*The man takes a deep breath and looks into the womans eyes.*

Man: I'm sorry... next time I have to work late I promise I will call. But we need to stop this...

Woman: Stop what?

Man: This fighting... it's not good. You need to trust me and know that I'm always looking out for my family first and foremost.

Woman: Well, I don't know.

Man: When I go out drinking, it's because I need to show my boss that I'm not just some 9-6 normal guy who does his job and that's all there is. I need to show him that I have a personaility and that I'm somoene he can trust. I want to get promoted so we can get out of our apartment and buy a house... so our kid can have a backyard that I can toss the football to him in. Aren't those the same things that you want?

Woman: I don't care about those things, I just want you.

Man: Well... I'll call you next time I have to work late, okay?

Woman: All right...

*The man takes a step forward and gives a hug to the woman and the woman recipricates. The two then start to kiss and Stevo takes a few steps back.*

Stevo: Is it really that simple?

Chazz: Stevo!? Stevo!?

*Stevo looks down at his right hand and the cell phone which rests in it. He puts the cell phone back up to his mouth and realizes he has trouble speaking into it.*

Chazz: You there Stevo?

Stevo: Chazz... I... I gotta go.

Chazz: What!? Stevo!? Game plan, come on, think marketing! Think dollars! Eye on the prize!

Stevo: My eye is on the prize...

*Stevo hits the END button on the phone then holds the power button until the phone is switched off. He walks away from the couple who are making up, and as he turns his back he starts to sprint. He runs through the park, then blindly across the interesection, barely even bothering to check for traffic. He finally reaches Cindy's apartment and hits the doorbell.*

Cindy: What do you want?

Stevo: You.

Cindy: What?

Stevo: Let me up, we need to talk...

Cindy: I don't know...

Stevo: Trust me...

*There is a brief pause and finally a heavy breath from Cindy's side of the intercom. The door to the complex then buzzes and Stevo twists the handle as the cameras fade to black with the last image we see being Stevo entering the building.*
