My eyes shot open as the pain hit me once again. The last thing I could remember was running into the light, the light that I was led to be the thumping of the drums, the drums that I could still here in my head even now. Thump Thump, Thump Thump, Thump Thump, Thump Thump. As I sat up I looked around. There was no sign of the warehouse that I had been in only minutes before. I was laying outside on the cold hard ground, all around me was nothing, there was only darkness. I tried to stand up to my feet, I was finding things much easier than before, it seemed as if the pain was now only a dull ache in the back of my head. It was almost as if the rhythm of the drums was driving the pain away. Thump Thump, Thump Thump, Thump Thump, Thump Thump. I wondered just where the hell I was as I looked around in every direction, there was nothing. No warehouse, no buildings, no people, just a vast emptiness as far as my eyes could see. There was only darkness, something that I thought was strange for a few seconds before it hit me. I looked up toward what I though was the night’s sky….. There were no stars. There was no moon. All around me was just nothingness. Cold empty nothingness. “This future is in your hands Kaden.” I was startled as I spun around to see the three hooded men standing behind me. It was the leader of the three men that had spoken to me in his whispering voice. His words echoed far into the distance. “Where the hell did you come from?” I took a few steps back as I asked the question of the three hooded men. I had seen some strange things since the day I awoke knowing nothing, but it seemed that these three had just appeared out of nowhere…. Then it hit me. Just before the sound of the buzzing began in that warehouse, the three hooded men had disappeared into thin air in a flash of blue light. Who the hell were these people? I was beginning to put things together in my head thanks the volume of pain being slowly decreased by the drumming. Thump Thump, Thump Thump, Thump Thump, Thump Thump. Nothing made sense. “It is your destiny to come and see this Kaden.” The three hooded figures took a few steps towards me as they spoke in their hushed confident tone, this time all in stereo. “See what? There is nothing here!” I looked around as I spoke to see if I could spot anything familiar. A landmark, a sign of civilisation, the warehouse I had just come from…. Anything. “This Kaden, is the end of the world.” Did I just here him right? Did this guy just say that it was the end of the world? This had to be some sort of joke right? Play the prank on the guy that lost his memory, very funny. The three figures must have seen the disbelieving look plastered across my face as they spoke. “You are currently in the year 8.14i. Yesterday the last descendant from the human race perished. You are currently standing on the planet formally known as earth, and you are the last remaining member of your species in the galaxy.” My mind was working at a million miles an hour trying to work out what this hooded figure was saying. Yet as he spoke I looked around at the vast sea of emptiness around me. I wasn’t sure what to believe, but something wasn’t right. “Kaden Alonzo, you are the son of Destiny. The prophecy of A Fecal Voodoos Slings predicts that a human from the past will save the future for his people. Kaden you are that saviour.” Me? Some kind of saviour? I couldn’t even remember my own name let alone save humanity. I know that these three hooded men kept calling me Kaden but something about the name just didn’t feel comfortable with me. I decided enough was enough as I gazed into the black hole under the dark hood of the three figures standing in front of me. The pain in my head was easing, I was getting the hell away from these people and I was going to find out who I really was and what is going on around here. I tried to turn and run, but something was stopping me. My legs were paralysed. A great feeling of terror washed over my body again as I heard the buzzing all around me. The three hooded figures bowed their heads together and looked down at the ground. I was struggling to breath. What was this, a panic attack? No. This was something different, it was if the oxygen was being sucked away from me. Something empowered me to look up. I slowly managed to battle against the terror and look to the sky. The darkness was pierced by a glowing light that was growing closer and closer with every passing second. “What…. Is…. That???…” I choked out my words as I tried hard to take my eyes away from the tremendous light that was swooping down. I couldn’t. It was beautiful but terrifying all in one. “That my son, is the end of this planet. The final play in the brief history of the ancient planet of earth.” I struggled to hear the words of the leader of the three figures as the oxygen was finally sucked away from my body. I struggled to breath, but I didn’t choke. I didn’t know what was going on until the ball of light was just above us. The buzzing was getting louder and louder. The drums in my head were dying, the pain was returning. Suddenly it hit. The loudest noise I had ever heard. Everything flew into the air, yet strangely I didn’t even move. Earth, rock and dirt flew up from around me and smashed into my body, it just bounced off. It was majestic. All around me the planet had exploded yet I remained paralysed, still, untouched, unmoving…. Until I saw it from the corner of my eyes. That blue light coming from the three hooded figures, only this time it was drawing me in. I was moving without moving. I unashamedly tightly closed my eyes in terror. Was I dying? I could feel my body being pulled in a thousand difrrent directions, yet the feeling was satisfying. The buzzing was subsiding, the drums were coming back into my head. The sweet sound of drums. Thump Thump, Thump Thump, Thump Thump, Thump Thump. I felt my knees buckle under me slightly, it must mean I am back on solid ground. I took a few seconds before opening my eyes. The terror that had paralysed my body was slowly beginning to fade away as I looked around at the new environment I inhabited. It was must more comforting than the vast nothingness I had just experienced. All around me busy people were rushing around me as if I wasn’t even there. I looked around at the design of the buildings, I heard the voice of people. “Milan, Italy. 2008” The voice of the leader was a reassuring whisper in my left ear. I spun around to face the three hooded figures, there heads remained bowed. I was struggling to comprehend what I had just seen as the drums in my head struggled to holdback the pain. Thump Thump, Thump Thump, Thump Thump, Thump Thump. “Your destiny must continue in this city Kaden. Averting the future you have seen for your people depends on it.” Nothing was making sense, but for some reason I found myself believing the leaders words. Whether it was the feeling of being somebody important or not, something was pushing me in the direction of his guidance. “But who are you?” My voice was broken and uneven as I struggled to stay on my feet as the whole event hit me like a punch in the stomach. “I am Arrant, we are the Cult of Kharn.” Arrant, I was finally able to put a name to the figure. I repeated the name in my mind a few times, it seemed to soothe me. Arrant. Arrant. Arrant “But what do you want?” The second question was more of a reflex, I didn’t even know I was going to say it until the words came out of my mouth. The answer was instant, as if Arrant knew that the issues was coming. “We want to guide you in saving your people. The prophecy of A Fecal Voodoos Slings demands it.” I tried to throw everything together in my mind, but I was struggling badly. I looked around at the people going about their daily life’s in the city of Milan. Were they in danger? What did I have to do to save them? It was all becoming too much for me to process. I felt the oxygen being sucked away from my system again. I panicked and quickly looked up at the sky. I searched out for any other bright light that was falling towards us, but there was nothing. The oxygen rushing away was no sudden impact, this time it was all me. My eyes suddenly closed and I fell to the floor. As I slipped into unconsciousness I could hear the sounds of the drums growing fainter and fainter. Thump Thump, Thump Thump, Thump Thump, Thu… |
