We stand blade to staff, intensity emanates from both of us.

My body aches from the beating.

Sweat drips down my face, covered by the night sky.

Before me my opponent glows a brilliant gold - but I've noticed a considerable drop in the strength of that glow. He is fading, quite literally, but I know that I am too. He has fought me with everything he has, and for the most part, has come out on top.

Lightning crashes in the distance, illuminating the dried and cracked dirt beneath our feet. The ground is scraped and smudged from the battle. The boom of thunder follows soon after the lightning and for a brief moment I feel my opponent's focus wane, ever so slightly.

Now is my chance.

As I think this I find myself already having parried his staff aside and slicing downwards. With a great golden flare, my opponent vanishes and I am left standing. But there is no time to celebrate. I have been greatly wronged and I need to right it. 'The Hope' has hunted me in my dreams and haunted my waking. Now he intends to wash his hands of me and move on.

It's just not that simple.

The thought that one mistake on my behalf has left me here - unresolved - makes me cringe. My course is clear, I must seek out Isaac and claim my vengeance. Turning to survey my surroundings I find myself in the middle of a clearing in a dense forest. There is no physical indication of which way I should travel to find 'The Hope'. Seeing no other alternative, I start blindly into the forest. Trees and plants grow densely and there is no path, but as I walk the way seems to clear itself, allowing me easy passage.

Up ahead the darkness is broken by the glare of headlights. The path clears itself towards the lights and I naturally enough make my way there. As I spot the source, I find that the forest opens and morphs into a city street. Above me, the night sky is dark and no stars are visible. Spotting a broken mirror on the ground I see that my face reflects this and my mask appears merely black. A voice calls out to me from ahead.

"I've been looking for you!"

The voice sounds aggressive. Could it be Isaac? Perhaps he has finally decided I am not, as he says, 'cured' and that our issues are not yet resolved.

No such luck.

Ahead of me I see a large, intimidating silhouette. The figure leans on the hood of the car and stands to wait for me as I make my approach. As I get closer I notice his hair in braids and I know this man is familiar. Scouring my mind for his identity I come to realize where I recognize him from.

My keep.

What seems like an eternity ago now, in the safety and security of the keep I found a room of pictures of what I assumed were it's past owners. My own picture had appeared there miraculously through no doing of my own and now I am sure that the black knight's, or perhaps someone else's portrait has now joined the collection.

As I approach the man he places a large hand on my chest and shoves me backwards. Completely unprepared for this I stumble and he smirks confidently at me.

I have seen that look far too many times to pay it any notice. I start forwards again and again he places a hand on my chest and shoves. This time I expect it and catch myself. What could he possibly want with me? Doesn't he realize I have something to do? I'm unresolved!

"I'm going to make an example of you," the words roll from the mouth of his blurred face. In the distance I spot something...

... another silhouette...

... this one wearing a white top hat. He's close! I start forwards again and again the man grabs me and tries to hold me back, I dodge around him and use his momentum to throw him into a car. He falls in slow motion, but fortunately I still seem to be able to run at a normal pace. But Isaac has a huge head start on me... I run as fast as I can and am relieved to find I don't seem to be exerting myself at all and focus my attention on finding him.

A sign is up ahead.

"Welcome to Milan.
Hope can be found here."

Oddly specific.

Or perhaps I'm reading too much into it. But that's not important now, I continue ahead and find myself on a paved street. A large, very old looking cathedral is ahead of me. I look to the sky and am relieved to see the stars once again.

And there, standing in front of the cathedral is the man in the top hat. I run towards him and the distance folds on itself and I find myself standing just behind him within moments. Triumphantly I place a hand on his white cloaked shoulder and spin him to face me.

A faceless tourist stares at me, dumbfounded, his camera dangling happily from his neck. I turn around and I am not surprised to see the traffic officer in the middle of the road is now dressed like Isaac White. As is the mother at the cafe. The three businessmen across the street...

... but wait. This is my dream.

I watch with amusement as the traffic officer Isaac gawks open mouthed as a group of school children are ushered by their teacher across the road - their faces all covered by what looks like the night sky. The mother in the cafe spits out her coffee in horror as she lifts her baby from the stroller, to find it now wearing a Night mask. The businessmen across the street stumble and one trips over a bench as the attractive young woman they were just gaping at now finds her face covered by my mask as well.

Somehow I find myself aware of more Isaac Whites around me, out of sight - but the thought arrives straight after that for every White there is a Night there waiting for him...

I smile to myself as I know what must be done.

In the distance, that silhouette watches me, waiting.
