My hotel room at Goodfellas Casino, Las Vegas. I lie perfectly still, afraid that the slightest movement may frighten off the sleep I so desperately need. I need to dream. I look to the bedside table to my right at the small bottle of pills and wonder... ... how long... ... they take... ... to work... ... with a crash I hit the ground. The grass is surprisingly soft, I hardly feel myself collapse onto it. I gasp for breath and clutch at the wound through my chest... it is gone. Before me is the demonic structure... this 'house of hell' I had just passed through. Inside is carnage... dead soldiers from all sides scatter the ring - and right near the exit lies the captain of my guard. The last moment of his life was spent saving me - he pushed me from the structure before dying and I don't know how to ever repay him. And who was that strange man in a hat who had stabbed us both and killed the good captain? The captain had seen a no-win situation and had wanted me to climb the mountain. Which mountain? The huge one jutting out of the ground before me now. A board surface space, the mountain seems to have three paths leading up to the top. At the base of the path I stand on his the house of hell. The other two paths are obscured, but along them I see various soldiers charging forward towards the peak. I am alone, but I start the climb none-the-less. The captain died so I may go on and at least stand a chance against the champion at the top... ... even now, I'm not sure I can beat him. The last time the two of us met, I gave it everything I had. I attacked him with every ounce of strength, heart and will that I had - and I like to believe that he did too, but on the day he remained atop the mountain and I was sent in retreat back to my keep. But now that retreat option may be gone it seems. I look with some sorrow at the house of hell which was once my keep - my trophy. Now the lifeless form of the cage enclosing a wrestling ring - dead knights, samurai and soldiers made of diamond scattered amongst the debris. In that case, there can be no turning back and the only way forward is forward. With determination I turn and run up the steep slope, towards the peak. As I run, the enemy appear. Great silver knights stream down the mountain directly at me. To my left I hear the sounds of a great warrior in battle - I turn and see a mighty red-haired knight I remember from an earlier battle relentlessly fighting his way to the top also. To my right I see a sleek golden man also streaking towards the top of the mountain. For a moment, I wonder if I have to race to the top. If not only do I have to topple the champion, but beat these other men to it too. But something inside tells me otherwise. Something tells me to take as long as I need and do what I need to do to get to him. I set sight of the mighty castle atop the mountain and charge at the nearest cluster of silver knights. I draw my katana as I see a barrage of broadswords descend on me. Somehow I know that my parry will block them all - and that the returning slash will crumple them all to the ground. They collapse lifeless without a sound and I continue my charge. Further up I climb and further I have to fight. Enemies surround me from all sides and I struggle to keep them off me at times. But the goal is clear and now there is no way back. I have no choice. I must continue. The air starts to feel thin but I have no trouble breathing... ... I look around me and am surprised to suddenly find myself atop the mountain again... ... what a view. I spend what feels like a lifetime standing perfectly still and turning a full 360 degrees to survey the view, the enemies around me somehow complying and remaining frozen in place around me. There's nothing like that view. I remember it from the last time I was here. Something behind me tells me that someone is there though, watching me. I turn around and find a familiar sight. The castle atop a high peak and underneath it, a cave. And out the front of the cave... ... a man... ... the champion... ... he looks at me and smiles, I nod my head in respect. He returns my gesture and draws his sword, beckoning me forward. And in this moment I know I am not afraid. I know that I want what he has. And I'm going to try to take it for as long as it takes. With a yell I charge forward, brandishing my sword - he bellows and charges at me. As our blades are about to collide, the world, time and all existence seems to freeze... |
