"Master, it's Akumu. I'm sorry to call you so late - it happened again, I still can't sleep. I'll need to gather my thoughts and would really appreciate your company right now. You know where I'll be." Akira Kimura had listened to that message many times already. Akumu Miyamoto - a man known to the world as Night was one of Kimura's oldest and favorite students. While most of his proteges were still heavily green back in Japan - with one or two drifting around the world, Night was an exception. Since graduating from the Dojo a couple of years ago he had been wrestling on the Japanese independent circuit until being a surprise signing by Las Vegas based, sVo. Night's very employment in this company had been honor enough for Akira seeing one of his prize students fighting on the international stage. Winning the sVo Hardcore Title had topped that off - but since Night's extremely close attempt at winning the sVo World Championship a couple of weeks ago, Akira knew that this would be the man to continue his legacy. However, almost sticking with tradition, it seems all the great ones are... eccentric at best. Night was certainly no exception, this Kimura knew without a doubt. Since the two had first met, Night was always... attached... to his dreams. For the most part he was likeable and personable and sometimes even talkative. But there was always that lingering issue with him - it was never clear whether Night knew whether or not he was in a dream. Somedays better than others, Akira knew from the message that things were not running quite so smoothly. Now dressed in a pair of black slacks with a maroon button-up shirt he finds himself practically bouncing on the spot, waiting for the elevator he is standing in to open out onto the roof of Goodfellas Casino, Las Vegas. Thankfully, knowing his protege, he had asked for a special access key, allowing the elevator access to the roof. Finally with a ding the doors glide open - Kimura steps onto the roof and there in the distance he sits. Quiet and reflective as always, the man known as Night sits perched on the edge of the building, leaning back on a pillar. As always his face is obscured by a mask resembling the night sky - a large star imprinted boldly over his right eye, his hair protruding from the top of the mask wildly. He is dressed simply in a pair of jeans, black boots and a 'sVo' t-shirt. He looks up as his teacher, Akira, approaches. Night: Thank you for coming, master. Akira Kimura: Of course, Akumu. I told you when we first met - you are like my son, when you need me, call me. But I was definitely surprised to hear from you at... He checks the time on his watch and is shocked to find it so late. Akira Kimura: ... three-thirty in the morning. Night: I'm sorry, I didn't have anyone else I could call. The young man turns his attention away, staring idly and seemingly numbly down towards the strip below. Despite the late hour, the light from the street is still almost as bright as day - neon shadows dancing across the rooftop. And small as ants, the people below mill about, still enjoying their nights - what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas after-all. Akira Kimura: It's no problem, Night, I was just worried about you. Night: Thank you. Moving to his protege, Kimura sits down on the ledge of the building and places a re-assuring hand on Akumu's shoulder. Having never had a son, Kimura had always treasured his relationship with his star pupil who the old man could always see looked up to him as a type of father figure. The two sit in silence for a moment before Night finally breaks it. Night: I've been taking the sleeping pills. A gentle expression on Kimura's face paints a picture of concern - Night, oblivious to this still looks down at the strip. Akira Kimura: How are they going for you? Night: Fine I guess, they're a bit weird. Akira Kimura: Would you care to elaborate on that? Night: Well, the same stuff is happening. I'm still dying in my dreams. I'm still waking up sweating... screaming... The concern still etched in the older man's face, he shakes his head slowly. Akira Kimura: Akumu, you must be careful. These are powerful drugs you're dealing with for a few nightmares-- Night: Not nightmares, master. You know me... you know that my dreams are my sanctuary. I know what dreams are for other people, but for me, they are a safe place... a place where I can turn to find enlightenment to light my path. Akira Kimura: And they're not that for you anymore? Night: They are... but the dying continues. It may not seem like a big deal for most people - but for someone who has been able to be safe in his dreams for his entire life... it is very disturbing. Again, the two drift into silence. Both look down at the strip below thankful for the distraction. A mutual focus on something much larger than either of the two of them - and a sense of perspective fills the air. Somewhere bustling around down there on the street is undoubtedly some poor soul losing themselves into the night to escape the everyday problems of their life. A quick release unquestionably... but the problems will still be there, just like in Akira Kimura's life... just like in Night's. Akira Kimura: How are you feeling about Destiny? Night: It's... daunting. Akira Kimura: Definitely a big night for you. Night: I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed, honestly, master. Akira Kimura: I can't say I blame you. Night: Last time I fought Stevo for the title, we were both fresh and despite throwing everything I had at him... I still couldn't beat him. Now I have to somehow try to top him after surviving the House of Hell... I don't even know if I'll get out of there in good enough shape to be able to wrestle a second match... let alone face Stevo for the World Championship. Akira Kimura: You're not the only one pulling double duty, this Sunday. Stevo must face three challengers consecutively! His title on the line the whole time... how do you think he's feeling? Finally Night looks back up at his mentor. Meeting eye to eye, Night remains silent for a moment - a note of seriousness emanates from him as he thinks. Night: I understand what you're getting at, master, but honestly, I don't care how Stevo is feeling about either Howie Banks or Cody Williams. They're all top-notch competitors... but all I'm worried about right now is whether or not I can walk away from the House of Hell, hopefully with my Hardcore Title intact and still manage to walk out of the main event with the sVo World Championship. If I'm barely standing and Stevo is fresh-- Akira Kimura: ... but he does have three matches on the night! And they're all consecutive! Night: Not if I face him first. Like I said, it doesn't matter to me how good shape Stevo is in for all three matches. But if I face him first, I'm at a major disadvantage. Master, I'm dealing with a steel cage, weapons, barbed wire, C4 explosives, a man made of diamonds and the black knight himself! And after that I have to face the champion of the world... that's my issue with the night. Akira Kimura: There's not a lot you can do about it. Night: And there's nothing I would do about it... this is the position I'm in, of course I'm going to fight with all I have. Just some food for thought. Akira Kimura: Akumu... you've made me very proud, you know? Kimura places a re-assuring hand on his student's shoulder. Night: I know, master. Thank you. Akira Kimura: Thank you, Night. The old man smiles as he stands. Akira Kimura: Come on, you should try to get some sleep - you have a big day coming up. Night: Biggest of my life... Placing an arm around Night's shoulders, Akira guides him towards the elevator, which protudes from the roof harshly. Akira Kimura: You going to be alright to sleep? Night: Yes... I have help. |
