How long have I been running now?

This question has been repeating itself to me for as long as I've been running, I assume.

I don't know the answer to the question, but for some reason, I keep going. Rain crashes down as the silhouettes of trees whiz by me - and flanking me on both sides and behind me, my personal guard. We are all armored samurai, our coverings decorated like the sky above us now. The terrain is unstable, and I don't mean the ground - rather the trees, the ground, every bush, plant and animal, and even my guard flicker in and out of existence every few moments.

It was strange at first...

... now I'm rather used to it.

Suddenly a new question comes to mind - how am I running? The last thing I remember... was my death. Stabbed through the heart by the stranger with the strange silhouette. Was that a hat on his head? It had to have been.

That was it, the last thing I remembered... I opened the door to my keep and the challengers stood there. I've faced the first now I'm sure... but the black knight and the diamond man are still to come. And suddenly I'm here running... we have to stop soon.

The moon shines brightly above us as we dart silently through the forest. Finally, in a thick patch of bamboo, we come to a halt, signalled by the captain of the guard.

He points ahead to what I know is my keep... but it's not the way I remember it at all. It is now a wrestling ring, enclosed by a cage... the ropes glint slightly - the barbed wire wrapped around them stares at my flesh hungrily. Inside the demonic structure, the black knight and the man made of diamond fight intently inside. I tentatively pat the solid, golden metallic strap around my waist - the sVo Hardcore Championship.

What they fight over is mine.

A sense of possessive jealously washes over me and I know I must involve myself in this conflict - surely only I can only be the victor here...

... but as I leap up the captain of the guard grabs my arm.

I lunge and thrash about, desperate to break his grip and defend what is mine.

He stands motionless and I can't break free.

"What is the meaning of this?" I hiss at him.

He remains perfectly still.

"Let me go," I command, my voice is low and cold, yet he still remains perfectly still. "What they fight for is mine," I continue, "I must defend it."

Only now does he move, he doesn't speak and doesn't need to - his intent is perfectly clear. He points, and as my gaze follows his finger, my heart skips a beat. The top of the world...

"There it is..." the words escape my mouth, hungrily as I survey a huge mountain which stands on the far side of what was once my stronghold. Looking around the once familiar and now completely unfamiliar terrain, I strain my eyes to try to counteract the constant flickering of everything. I am shocked, but not surprised to see that there is only one way onto the mountain, and that is through the structure.

And rather than a simple cave opening, the top of the mountain houses a mighty fortress... but fighting up the whole way are three armies - I can't make them out, even as a lightning crash illuminates the hill. Beside us what appears to be three or four sushi chefs bustle about trying to pull a canvas tarp over what appears to be a sushi bar behind a bush.

Interesting.

"There's only one way onto the mountain," I say to the captain, who merely nods in response. He holds up an arm and extends it towards the structure and as one, we silently dart towards it in the darkness.

We approach the cage and a member of my guard makes his way to open it...

*KA-BOOOOOOM!*

Only to be sent flying by a huge explosion. We know he is gone, but the shock of his loss hits hard. Struggling forward, we charge through the open portal and into the cage, two more guards sent flying in huge explosions. As I hit the ring I see the black knight laughing at the loss of three of my guard - he has dogged me at every turn and now... this is too much, I draw my sword and thrust it at him, the diamond man intercepts and punches me, sending me flying into the structure before turning his attention back to the knight.

Before I know what is happening, the ring is full. The surviving members of my guard battle it out with soldiers made of diamond and smaller versions of the black knight.

I grab my sword and lunge at the nearest enemies - a diamond soldier and a knight crumple as I slash, only to be replaced by two more who attack me more fericiously than the last two. Around me the chaos of a mass battle rages, several more of my guard fall, as do members of all forces... but still their re-enforecements arrive, where are ours?

Looking around desperately I know they're not coming.

There are none.

The captain of my guard catches my eye. He frantically indicates for me to escape the far side. To simply run and make a dash for the top of the mountain.

I shake my head in refusal, only to see the glinting blade of a sword whiz past my face. In an instant, the captain is there, brandishing his weapon. He stands between myself and the door and begins slashing wildly, carving a path for us. As the enemies keep coming, I know he is right and it is time for me to go.

We fight our way forward, inching through the chaos until finally we reach the edge. He opens the door for me and bows, I return his gesture but as we stand, that familiar stinging in my chest, coupled with the now blank expression of pain of the captain lets me know we have both been stabbed.

The blade retracts and behind the captain I see that same strange silhouette.

It is a hat.

With a final act of will, the captain pushes me through the door, I fall to the outside...

... and the fall continues...

...

I wake with a start, once more, sitting up violently.

Again I am hyper-ventilating and covered in sweat.

I look at the bedside table to my right and with a great relief find a small white bottle of what I know are the strongest sleeping pills I can get. Should I take one now?

No, not just yet, I need to think.
