“You wanna know something?,” Jason Fox said as he walked into his room in the Goodfellas Casino’s hotel area, “I’ve never been to Las Vegas. Hell, I’ve never been west of the Mississippi. You wanna, I don’t know, show me around?”

The representative from sVo didn’t change her facial expression. “No, Mr. Fox. And for the record, you’re going to have to be a little more suave than that if you ever want me to walk in here again.”

“Duly noted.” He smiled; she would have none of it.

“This is basically the lounge area. Couch, TV, mini-fridge…”

“Is it comped?”

“Pardon?”

Fox stammered. “Is the food and the booze in the mini-fridge comped, or am I going to be stuck with some sort of bill when I move out of here?”

“It’s comped so long as you don’t go overboard. Anyway…the bedroom is in there, as is the bathroom. Keep in mind you’ve only got 30 days in here before we start charging you.”

“Yeah…I’m going to be checking out an apartment a few blocks off of the strip next week.”

“Good. So I’ll leave you then to get settled.”

“Thanks…um…I didn’t catch your name.”

“That’s because I didn’t give it to you, Mr. Fox. Good day.”

“Bye. Oh…and one other thing before you go. Thank Mr. Moretti and Mr. Page for giving me this chance.”

---

It had been nearly five months since Jason Fox had appeared on a wrestling card outside of Cleveland. Professional wrestling in the Midwest was slowly but surely drying up, and the opportunities presented in Detroit, Chicago, and Minneapolis that had been there for the taking in October were no longer abundant in February. Jason had begun to lose faith; he had to take a weeknight job tending bar just to pay the rent on his apartment, and it looked as if the 24 year-old man who had been proudly proclaiming himself as “The Future of the Business” was going to be forced out of it.

Then came the message on his phone.

“Mr. Fox, this is the Sanctioned Violence Organisation. We’ve seen a tape of your work in SCW over in Detroit from last year. A few members of our roster claim to have seen you and worked with you and have recommended you. I have to say that we’re impressed. If you’re willing to fly out to Las Vegas, we’re more than willing to give you a trial run with the company.”

It was a second chance. Another second chance in a long line of second chances. And for once, he was out of the Midwest, away from a dying wrestling scene and away from places that closed within one month of his first booking.

He took out a pen and scribbled down the number of the man who left the message.

---

The tryout in front of the company was a different experience for Fox. Instead of wrestling a quick squash in front of company bosses or a dark match, pre-show crowd, he had to impress a few talent agents with a twenty minute match against a local guy. It went well enough; standard holds, little downtime, solid finish. The agents scribbled furiously, whispered to one another about little points in the match. Jason didn’t pay them much attention, trying to focus on putting together the best match possible for these men in black suits.

“Nice work, Mr. Fox. Now cut a promo.”

“Right now?” He gasped for breath. Jason hadn’t wrestled a match over ten minutes in at least six months.

“We’re all interested in you. You had a very good match, but we need to know you can talk. This isn’t some state fair. We have television. We have pay-per-view. We need to know that you can actually talk half as well as you can wrestle.”

Jason collected himself briefly.

“Ladies and gentlemen, morons in attendance, fat pieces of crap sitting at home taking up both cushions of your love seats, what you just witnessed here in this ring is the dawning of a new era in the sVo.

“Tonight, here, you got to see the very first victim in sVo to fall at the hands of Jason Fox. I’m going to warn all of you now – jump on the bandwagon as soon as you possibly can, because in the next few weeks, you’ll begin to notice that this was the start of a movement, the start of the crowning of the Fox Populi. And for those of you who breathe out of your mouths and don’t know your Latin, that’s ‘Fox of the people.’

“Tonight, the 21st Century Fox notched his first win in sVo. Tomorrow, well, tomorrow, the movement begins. Look back at that guy crawling out of the ring, his back aching in pain. He’ll be the answer to a trivia question one day. ‘Who was the first person thrown against the wall by J-Fox?’

“To everyone in the back who might be a little nervous, I don’t blame you. Those of you with gold around your waist, you might want to keep it with you at all times. Cherish those moments you have with your belts, because the moment you get into the ring with me, they will be mine.”

The agent in the center looked up. “When can you start full time?”

---

“We want to start you out in a triple threat next week, Jason. Debut at the pay-per-view with two other new guys.”

“Pay-per-view?” It took a moment for it to sink in. Not only was Jason going to be on TV weekly, but he actually would be on pay-per-view.

“Yes…you’ll be facing off with Nate Lamarta and Brian Lee. Like I said, they’re also new to the company. We figure the best way to show off all three of you is to put you all out there together. Here are some tapes; study up and be ready for Sunday. We don’t want you going out there and disappointing us.”

“That will never happen. You can be assured of that.”
